Rumour is that freshman Fullback Terrell Terrell has been working out at Defensive end in summer practice. The coaching staff is considering moving the standout high school fullback to defense, where he can better aid the team. Terrell came to Rutgers knowing he would be changing positions due to the fact that Rutgers runs a single back offense and has no use for a fullback. |

Final Pre-Season Thoughts
Coaching Decisions We'll be sticking with the single-back offense (now year 3) and the 4-3 defense (our second season in that base defense). We've elected to lengthen practices a bit this season, to help prepare our guys a little more (bumping practice time from 17 to 18). Player Moves Senior DT Victor Coccione was moved to DE, where he will provide depth. Senior OLB Floyd Daubach was moved inside to ILB, where he is much more likely to see playing time. Freshman FB Terrell Terrell was moved to DE, where we feel after a year of bulking up, he will be on his way to defensive greatness. Recruting Outlook Quarterback: I'm still terribly dissatisfied with the QB situation, we'll bust our ass to try to land a top recruit there. It's imperitive to have a solid QB in the single back offense. Running back: I don't think it's vital to land a great recruit here, but we'll be losing a lot of depth over the next two years, so we should re-stock. Recievers: The Wide-outs are looking good, but the TE's have been disappointing. One solid prospect at both positions would be nice. O-Lineman: While our current crop continues to disappoint, we seem to have a bright future. Tackle and Center are needed MUCH more than Guard (where we will have 7 players for at least 2 years beyond this one). Special Teams: This might be amongst the most imporant positions to fill, we need both a big-time kicker and punter. Defensive Lineman: We've got some good prospects here, but we still need a few more. Secondary: Another top priority, we REALLY need cornerbacks, and another solid safety wouldn't hurt. Number of Scholarships: Having 58 scholarships currently and 13 scholarship players due to graduate, we can bring in 15 scholarship players. There is basically no restrictions here.

Regardless of his ratings, I hope your QB situation doesn't fall into the hands of someone that goes by the name of Byron Pfaff. Byron Pfaff? Pfaff? How do you even say that? Puh-faf-fuh? And he's a Byron to boot. That's just too funny. I'm surprised he's not from Banff. Good luck this year, by the way. Meadows makes me a bit nervous at QB, but it looks like you don't have any other option at this point. Maybe that freshman RB can take some of the pressure off your passing game. |

Lewis Meadows is the starter for now...but the scout is way more sold on him than I am. Believe me when I say i'll be recruiting quarterbacks HARD this year. I might want to bring in 3 of them for next year. You're probably right about Byron Pfaff (pronounced 'Faf') he doesn't look to good, and his name sucks...he'd probably only drag us down. On the other hand, I can't wait until next year to unleash the ultimate name onto the field, The FB we converted to Defensive End...Terrell Terrell. I'm serious about the name, I say he's so good, his parents decided to name him twice. |

CTH, sorry I haven't chimed in on this one yet, but I must tell you, I am thoroughly enjoying this one. Great work on the Dynasty, I hope to see you continue on for many years to come.. and hopefully, eventually win a few more ball games. Rutgers?? Now that's a damn tough place to build a program. Good Luck to you!! By the way, how are you able to cross certain items on posts out, and also how are you able to make text red? Thanks!! |

Actually I've got a couple of questions about that situation for ya. First of all, I know the Coach they have up there is a former Miami D-Coordinator, who's been recruiting his butt off down here in Florida and doing pretty well. Is he just a guy who can recruit but can't Coach? Is the talent that he inherited that bad? After a few seasons, once he has his recruits and his system in there, will things turn around? Hell, will he even be there that long? What is the general feeling from the Alumni/Fans up there regarding the new Coach? (That's a lot of Questions, LOL!! ) I can see how Rutgers would be a tough job, but I don't see how that program can't consistently hover around the .500 mark and sometimes do even better, much like a Boston College or a Pittsburgh. Thanks!! |

Keep going. I love this. Back in the late '60's, when I was at RU, I had an Econ grad assistant named Dromeshauser. So I got a big chuckle when I saw that name come up. He looks like he plays like a grad assistant in Econ, too. BTW, you inspired me to start my own Rutgers career. I liked the Princeton for Temple change, and so I made Conneticutt into Yale. I would have made BYU into Delaware, which was a big rival back in my days, but the thought of all those Mormons masquerading as Blue Hens was too much. |

I'll take these as the come: 1. Can Schaino Coach? right now, it's looking like no, and heres my reasoning... 2.Is the talent he inherited that bad? Again, i don't think so.. Here's my answer to questions 1 and 2. 2 years ago (Terry Shea's last season before being fired) We DESTROYED Buffalo 59-0. Last year we barely beat them, this year we lost! This team has only been 1-A for two years! We also lost to connecticut last year which would never have happened under Shea, and this year we lost to 1-AA Villanova. it's pitiful. From what I can tell, Terry Shea was at least KILLING the bad teams, and ocassionally hanging tight with good ones. Schiano's teams are just looking flat-out bad. We scored 36 points in all our big east games combined last year. 3,4. Will they be better with his recruits in the system? Will he last long enough to find out? He will definitely last until at least the end of next year. Bob Mulcahy, the Athletics Director (who i've had the misfortune of meeting), gives any coach way too much time to turn a program around. In my opinion, Terry Shea should have been fired 3 years before he finally was. In my opinion the 'i need MY players' is the last piece of ground Schiano has to stand on. While no-one was expecting anything last year (we won 2 games)there is no reason to have opened 0-2 this year, and if we don't beat Army this weekend, we will probably go 0-12. In my opinion he should almost resign if he goes 0-12, but he definitely WONT be fired until the end of NEXT season. 5. What's the feeling about him? People were very excited to get him. In all seriousness if this guy had stayed at Miami, he might have become their coach last year. Here's to bad career moves. He's had the Tony Soprano actor (a Rutgers grad) star in commericals the last 2 years, overhauled the uniforms, and been obsessed with getting P.R. working on advertising for the football program. He may be spreading himself too thin and not focusing enough on football. Just my opinion. While initially there was amazing buzz around this guy, i think the 0-2 start to two horrible teams this year has knocked all the air out of the baloon. His grace period is definitely over, and there had better be real signs things are turning around by the end of next year. |

thanks a lot for reading, i really enjoy knowing people are checking it out, and i've tried to refine my posting style east season, i think this year will be my best 'read' yet. As far as the Princeton move - I thought it would add a nice little spark, since to me I can't understand why Rutgers-Princeton didn't develop into a huge rivalry along the lines of Army-Navy. I guess the whole scholarship/non-scholarship thing was the final straw. Since Temple was generally on the exact same level as Rutgers in previous careers i've run as different teams, I expected some real fun games...The fact that they totally suck so far has been a bit of a disappointment. |

Week 1 Review
With no game to worry about, we finalized a few plays in practice and turned most of our attention to recruiting. Dream Recruit #1 Every week I am allowed to offer one red-coded player a scholarship. Every two weeks I am allowed to offer a black-coded player a scholarship. The black-coded players I have dubbed 'Dream Recruits' and the red-coded players 'Blue-Chip Recruits' QB Tony Richard Reminding many of Doug Flutie, this 5'11" 176 lb. passer seems to have all the tools necessary to be a big-time college Quarterback. Hailing from Berwick, Pennsylvania - Tony is regarded as at the 6th best quarterback in the nation, and the 34th best player in the country. Tony has looked like he's playing against grade-schoolers so far in his senior year, tossing 5 touchdowns in 4 games while avoiding an interception and completing a mind-numbing 76% of his passes. Tony said academics and distance will play a role in his decision, which is good for us. We offer the 10th best Education program in the country (Tony's prospective major) while the only school closer to Tony, Penn State, does not offer education as a degree. We hope this is the quarterback who leads us to a national title. Tony seemed very interested when our offensive coordinator explained how good an opportunity he would have to start next year. Blue Chip Recruit Kicker Victor Fragomeni - Halifax, PA. While it almost seems silly to be pursuing a kicker so earnestly, we are going to be in dire need at both our kicking positions soon. Victor comes from a strong high-school program, and would likely have a shot at taking over the starting job next season if he were to commit to us. Victor is extremely interested in pursuing a degree in Jurisprudence, where we offer the 16th best program in the country. Other areas of focus We hit our areas of focus very hard, 4 quarterbacks were contacted, 3 kickers, 2 punters, 3 cornerbacks, and assorted other players. At QB we have contacted a second tier passer who idolizes Rutgers, so we hope to bring him in as a backup next season. I would ideally like to bring in 3 new quarterbacks next year to really shake things up. Also, with the apparent success of moving FB Terrell Terrell to Defensive End, we've target fullback Cary Lyle of Vernon, New Jersey as a recruit who could move elsewhere once joining the team (in his case, Running Back, Safety, and maybe Cornerback would be examined). Up next week, we kick off the season at home against Duke! |

rutgers-Princeton was one of the great rivalries--before Sonny Werblin, then owner of the Jets, decided that making Rutgers into a national champion would be his life's work. That caused the Ivy league schools to be dropped from the shcedule. The muaical "High Button Shoes" is based on the Rutgers-Princeton rivalry. They made a movie of it, starring Phil 'Sgt. Bilko' Silvers. The big songs are "Nobody ever died for dear old Rutgers" and, of course, 'Tiger Rag' which every team with the Tiger nickname now plays. |

Week 2 Review
Duke Blue Devils (0-0) at Rutgers Scarlet Knights (0-0) Last Meeting: Last year at Duke, Rutgers won 26-0 Rutgers is favored by 4 at home. Rutgers is ranked #92 in the coaches poll, Duke #122 Weather:58 degrees and raining. The first quarter was a showcase of both teams shaking off their rust. Our offense struggled , and we gave Duke a great scoring opportunity early when failing to convert on 4th and 2 from our own 40 yard line. But when Duke dropped back to pass on 1st and goal a few plays later, Terry Jackson sacked the QB, as well as forcing and recovering the fumble. Trying to capitalize on the turnover, we marched downfield, earning a first and goal from the one yard line when an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty halted the drive. A holding penalty would force us back even further, and Artie Kenny's 38 yard field goal attempt sailed wide right. On our next scoring attempt, penalties would again stall the drive, and Artie Kenny again missed a field goal, this time from 33 yards. After a poor Duke posession we took over inside their fifty. The drive ended with me turning purple as Artie Kenny missed another @#$%'in field goal. The game went to halftime scoreless. The next time we headed into Duke territory, we knew we weren't going to take "no" for an answer, as the legs of freshman Carlton Duncan led us downfield, the drive ultimately ended with QB Lenny Meadows running a draw for a 1 yard touchdown! Artie Kenny was recieved a standing ovation when managing to put the extra point through the uprights. Lewis Meadows then later hit Ricardo Schroeder for a 2 yard touchdown to put the game out of reach. Final Score: Rutgers 17, Duke 7 Player of the Week nominees: RB Carlton Duncan - 33 carries 141 yards , 8 catches for 46 yards not bad for a freshman! QB Lewis Meadows - 25-for-38, 204 yards, 1 TD, 1 INT Was lousy in the red-zone, but excellent otherwise DT Preston Slocum - 5 tackles, 2.5 sacks WR Ricardo Schroeder - 10 catches, 104 yards, 1 touchdown DE Terry Jackson - 5 tackles, 2 sacks, 3 tackles for loss, 3 hurries Injury Report: we are injury free! Recruiting I failed to mention in my week 1 report that there are no North Plainfield or New Brunswick, NJ players seeking to play in college. So we won't need to burn any scholarships out of loyalty. Dream Recruits Unable to make any new offers this week, here's a status report on our only current 'Dream Recruit' QB Tony Richard Amazingly Tony is not even speaking to other schools yet! I think we may be able to reel him in! Also, on a statistical note, he tossed his 6th touchdown of the year in his last game and still hasn't thrown an interception this season. I'm drooling thinking about landing him. Blue Chip Recruits this week's: Cornerback Steven Brewster Lanacaster, PA at 5'9 156 lbs, Steven is quite decieving. Looking almost too small to play football atall, Brewster has put up solid numbers against the pass (4 interceptions) as well as 2.5 sacks and 23 tackles through 5 games. His priorities are distance and team prestige. We are hoping he finds distance most important. status report on our other blue-chip recruits: K Victor Fragomeni Victor has now also been offered scholarships from Iowa and Arizona State. Iowa and us seem roughly equal in what we can present Victor with. Hopefully he'll decide to stay closer to home. Other Recruiting News We beat down the doors of many cornerbacks this week, and looked at one more quarterback. We need to get to the point where i feel i might land 2 or 3 cornerbacks. |

Week 3 Review
Connecticut Huskies (0-2) at Rutgers Scarlet Knights (1-0) Last meeting: Last year Rutgers won 41-24 at Connecticut Rutgers is favored by 7 at home The Coaches poll ranks Rutgers #50 and UConn #115 Weather: 70 degrees and raining Our offense didn't show up at all in the first half, and Lewis Meadows threw two interceptions while we were on the Connecticut side of the field. Slowy but surely we fell behind - we trailed 10-0 at halftime. Lewis Meadows then hit WR Ricardo Schroeder for an 88 yard touchdown pass to pull us back in the game. We fell behind 21-7 in the 4th, but rocketed back into the game with the Lewis to Schroeder connection, and I held my breath as Kicker Artie Kinney tied the game at 21-21. Late in the game we had a chance to put it away in regulation, but Kenny missed the 38 yard field goal attempt that would have won the game. Getting the ball back with only 30 seconds remaining, we connected on two big passes to have a shot at one last field goal. Predictably, Artie Kenny's 59 yard attempt fell short of the cross-bar as time expired. The game would go to overtime where Connecticut won the toss and elected to play defense first. Our offense sputtered, and two penalties moved us backwards and we failed to score. UConn then gained 15 yards on their first offensive play and put the winning kick through the posts. We just lost an incredibly winnable game, this could be a bad omen. Final Score: Connecticut 24, Rutgers 21 (overtime) Player of the Week nominees: WR Ricardo Schroeder - 5 catches, 173 yards, 2 touchdowns our big play threat almost won us the game RB Carlton Duncan - 26 carries, 119 yards, 2 catches, 37 yards amazingly solid for a freshman Injury Report at least we have our health. Recruiting Dream Recruits #2 CB Bernie Cousino Berine is a bit on the small side at 6'0" 165 lbs, but we think a year in the weightroom can pack on some more muscle. Bernie is currently visiting Syracuse, but we think if he's willing to listen we can sell him on our program. updates: QB Tony Richard Tony is now drawing some real interest, he is talking with Illinois, Notre Dame, and Oklahoma, but we still think he is making us his top priority due to his focus on academics and distance. Blue Chip Recruits WR Jimmy Brooks at 5'11" 178 lbs, Jimmy is another small, speedy wide reciever. In 6 games he has over 1200 yards recieving and 12 touchdowns, and his big play abilility would be very welcome here next year. Jimmy is most interested in staying close to home and finding a strong Genetics program. We are almost certain he'll decide to play here at Rutgers. updates: CB Steven Brewster Steve now has another scholarhip offer from Pitt and is thinking about visiting Utah. I think we've got the inside track here. K Victor Fragomeni Has offers from Arizona State, Boise State, Iowa and Virginia. The fact that he's visiting Virginia has me sweating...i think we're going to lose out on this one. |

Week 4 Review
California Golden Bears (1-1) at Rutgers Scarlet Knights (1-1) Last meeting: Rutgers and Cal have never played (in this dynasty) Rutgers is favored by 3 at home The Coaches poll ranks Rutgers #71 and Cal #88 Weather: 72 degrees and raining QB Lewis Meadows came out like a total jackass again tossing 2 interceptions early in the game - this seems to be a regular habit of his. While nothing too costly occured because of them, it just meant our offense couldn't get in sync and we didn't score in the first half. We trailed at halftime 14-0. In the second half we put things together, and tied the game at 14-14. Freshman RB Carlton Duncan crossed the goal line for his first rushing TD of the year to knot the game. From then on the defense really let us down. California seemed to be able to move the ball at will, and went up 17-14, and then 24-14, putting our backs to the wall. We responded by bringing the game to 24-21, but the game was then lost when Cal drove 80 yards and scored to make the game 31-21 with just 2 minutes remaining. We then lost any last shred of pride we had maintained when we fumbled the ensuing kickoff and gave Cal the ball back so they could kneel down and run out the clock. Final Score: California 31, Rutgers 21 Player of the Week nominees: WR Ricardo Schroeder - 6 catches, 93 yards, 1 touchdown He's the most consistent player on the team. RB Carlton Duncan - 21 carries, 109 yards, 1 touchdown. Injury Report We're still completely healthy...someone give the strength and conditioning coaches a raise. Recruiting Dream Recruit Updates QB Tony Richard Aside from us, Tony also has scholarship offers from Colorado State, Illinois, and Notre Dame. With his top priority being academics and his second being distance, I think he is very likely to choose us. I'm estatic at our prospects of landing Tony, so we're keeping our figners crossed! CB Bernie Cousino Not drawing as much interest, Bernie seems to be deciding between Syracuse and Rutgers. We really would hate to lose such a talent to another Big East program. Blue Chip Recruits here's an overview of our newest blue-chip prospect: FB Adrian Ackerman Recruiting him as an "athlete" we would plan on moving Adrian to another position for college ball. With his slight build (5'9" 193 lbs) we think the secondary might suit Adrian well, playing fullback he has displayed that he can both hit and run well. Academics and distance are his priorities, and we think we can offer him the best of the two areas. I believe Adrian will make the correct decision and come to Rutgers. updates: K Victor Fragomeni Victor is recieving a total of 6 scholarship offers, and seems extremely interested in Virginia and their superior Jurisprudence program. It's probably time for us to look for another strong kicking recruit. CB Steven Brewster Pittsburgh is the only other school offering Steven a scholarship, We have a distance advantage and they have a prestige advantage, it could really go either way. WR Jimmy Brooks Syracuse and Florida State are offering Jimmy a scholarship, but we think he wants to stay close to home with us. He's also commented about how impressed he is with our Genetics program, so i think we'll land him. In other recruiting... We're now looking at predominantly cornerbacks, kickers/punters, and some scattered running back and offensive line talent. We feel pretty good about most of our top-level recruits, so we're trying to anticipate filling in around them. |

Red-shirted Freshman Center Luther Shapiro was suspended for the season by coach Corey Thompson. While unwilling to go into specifics, Coach Thompson did say that Luther had committed a "serious violation of team rules." While admitting the violation does not warrant Syndicate involvement, Coach Thompson said he felt "It was the right thing to do [suspending Shapiro]. You have to be fair to the rest of the team." The suspension will not effect the eligbility of Luther, who is currently red-shirting his first season here, Shapiro will still have 4 years of playing elibility beginning next season. While suspended Shapiro is not allowed to practice with the football team. |

First Quarter Review
Starting with an incredibly disappointing 1-2 record, i think we might have to make some changes. QB Lewis Meadows has killed us in the first half, and then shown too little too late. His 6 TD's and 6 INT's aren't really impressing me, although he is completing almost 60% of his passes. I think the much-maligned Byron Pfaff might get a start next week. Offensively, I'll try to tweak the gameplan to run a bit more in the redzone, be more willing to go for it on 4th down (thanks to our horrible place kicker), and throw deep a little more. The bigger disappointment is our defense, which has looked terrible at times against really lousy teams. I'm having nightmares thinking about what will happen against Virginia Tech and Miami. Bright Spots RB Carlton Duncan, as a true freshman has been absolutely amazing. In 3 games he has 370 yards rushing and a touchdown, as well as a couple catches per game. He's made a real impact, and made my decision to not red-shirt him the correct one. DE Terry Jackson has been a monster again this year. Though only having 4 sacks, Terry has 13 QB hurries, meaning he's also directly forced 13 incomplete passes (most on 3rd down). He's on pace for almost 60 hurries and at least 10 sacks. He'll probably go down as one of the best players I ever coach. |

Ouch. That loss against UConn was tough. Looks like Tony Richard could be the messiah! I hope you get him. If he's in the backfield with Terrell Terrell, that would give you two guys but four first names. Too bad Tony wasn't a Dick; that would be really funny. "Richard Richard hands to Terrell Terrell..." Maybe it's not that funny. |

Rutgers Scarlet Knights (1-2) at West Virginia Mountaineers (1-1) Last meeting: Last year, West Virginia won 37-10 at home West Virginia is favored by 8 at home The Coaches poll ranks Rutgers #92 and W.Virginia #57 Weather: 61 degrees and clear Byron Pfaff got the start at QB, i needed to shake things up. We opened strong - on the game's first drive, hard running from RB Carlton Duncan and precise passing from Byron Pfaff moved us to the 11 yard line. Ultimatley we settled for a field goal by Artie Kenny, who has been recieving extra time to work on his accuracy from the coaching staff. After we exchanges punts, West Virginia got their first lucky break of the day as Byron Pfaff tossed an interception that gave W.Virginia the ball at our 26 yard line. 2 plays later they crossed the goal line and took a 7-3 lead into the 2nd quarter. We came out hot again in the second quarter, moving down the field on a couple sizable completions, and Artie Kenny hit a 39 yard field goal to bring us within 1 point. 7-6. Again W.V. answered and made it 14-6 on just a few offensive plays. Another Pfaff interception gave them a scoring oppurtunity, and a field goal was added. 17-6. At the end of the half it was 20-6. In the third quarter, 3 more Pfaff interceptions iced the game and West Virginia rolled to a 41-6 victory. Final Score: West Virginia 41, Rutgers 6 Player of the Week nominees: RB Carlton Duncan - 23 carries, 122 yards still looked pretty solid against stronger competition. This is great news for our future. Carlton is gunning to break our all-time rushing record in just his freshman season. It will only take 542 yards in our next 7 games Injury Report ILB James Zandofsky has a pulled quadriceps muscle, he'll be out for a few weeks and fully healed in 7 WR Neal Gray is complaining of hip pains, but will probably play through them Our to CB, J.J. Volz, needs knee surgery and may not play again this year Recruiting Dream Recruits here's our newest Dream Recruit: CB Harvey Jamison Harvey is a great cover corner, but a bit on the small side at 5'9". Still, our scout seems very high on him, so we're offering him a scholarship. Hailing from Waldwick, NJ Harvey is most interested in academics (social work) and proximity to home. Rice is the only other school offering him a scholarship, and they are over 1,000 miles a way. updates: QB Tony Richard Aside from us, Tony also has scholarship offers from Colorado State, Illinois, and Notre Dame. Other teams are looking at him, but amazingly he hasn't been offered any other scholarships. In 8 games he has thrown for 71% completion, over 2,100 yards, 12 touchdowns and NO interceptions. We're purchasing rabbit feet and four-leaf clovers to ensure this guy comes to Rutgers. CB Bernie Cousino It's a two-team race between Syracuse and Rutgers. Althought he swears he's 'seriously considering Syracuse,' we think we will wrap him up. Blue Chip Recruits here's an overview of our newest blue-chip prospect: OT Gerald Ford (seriously, that's his name) Taking constant abuse over his name has made Gerald one mean S.O.B. on the offensive line - growing up in Jersey City, NJ didn't hurt either. A monster run-blocker from a solid football program, we hope to add Gerald to our recruiting class. His focus on distance and academics are a real help in our pursuit of him. updates: K Victor Fragomeni While being offered 6 scholarships, Victor seems to have locked his sights on Virginia. I consider Victor a lost cause, but will keep the scholarship offer there in the event he changes his mind. CB Steven Brewster Another two-team competition. Pitt is going after Steven hard, and we get the impression he is leaning in their direction. WR Jimmy Brooks Colorado, Syracuse, Northern Illinois, and Florida State are offering Jimmy scholarships. We still think we hold the advantage with our Genetics program and proximity to his home. FB Adrian Ackerman Ackerman is drawing so much interest it is amazing. B.Y.U., Maryland, Penn State, Pitt, and South Florida also offered him scholarships. We have the best academics and location of the bunch, so this guy should be red-shirting in the fall after a position change. I think we'll be able to land Adrian, Jimmy, and Gerald out of these five. In other recruiting... We've basically narrowed our pursuits to the guys we are looking at right now. We'll probably examine another handful of guys between now and week 8, but we're confident we'll land most our coveted recruits. We've done a good job not wasting time this year - we've done well avoiding players we have no real chance with. |

Hailing from Waldwick, NJ ... I lived in Waldwick for a few years. the most famous thing about Waldwick at the time was that 2 of the first 3 'Annies' on Broadway came from there. Since my daughter has red hair, too, we moved up to Mahwah as soon as possible. Ouch! about UConn. Hope Pfaff can pull through in the next game. |

Week 6 Review
Brigham Young University Cougars (3-1) at Rutgers Scarlet Knights (1-3) Last meeting: Last year at Rutgers, BYU won 55-37 BYU is favored by 6, despite being on the road The Coaches' poll ranks Rutgers #101 and BYU #31 Lewis Meadows regained his starting job at QB. Being a bit banged up, we had to shuffle the Linebackers and Secondary...not great news against a pass-crazy team. Things didn't start off too hot as BYU hit a pass for a 72 yard TD on the first play from scrimmage. Late in the first quarter, after a spectacular 49 yard run by RB Carlton Duncan, we tied the game on a 7 yard TD pass to Buddy Lang. BYU answered with a quick scoring drive to make it 14-7 at the end of the first quarter. BYU was throwing on us easily, and went into the half up 28-14. In the third quarter our defense really seemed to re-gorup. And our offense put together two drives, one resulting in a field goal, and the other in a Carlton Duncan TD to bring us to 28-24 right at the end of the thrid quarter. When BYU had a chance to extend their lead back to 7 point early in the 4th, 3 consecutive penalites backed them out of field goal range and they were forced to punt. The crowd was really coming alive! Freshman RB Carlton Duncan seemed to be getting stronger as the game went on. Forced to start the drive at our own 5 yard line, Duncan ripped off consecutive runs of 15 and 14 yards to give us plenty of breathing room. Next on a key 3rd and 1, backup RB Malcolm Newton bust loose for 39 yards and a first down. Carlton Duncan took over again, running for 10 yards to give us a first and goal on the 8, and scoring a TD on the following play. With 6 minutes to go we were up 31-28! After trading punts, BYU had the ball at their own 49 with 2 minutes to go and 2 timeouts. After being stuffed on a run, one of their recievers got open on second down and broke a tackle to end up with a 40 yard gain..it was first and goal at our 10 yard line. With 57 seconds to go it was 3rd and goal from our 1 yard line, of course we couldnt stop them and they went up 35-31 With 40 seconds to go we needed to go 70 yards for the winning score. Lewis Meadows was looking to go big on first down - and his pass did result in a touchdown...for the wrong team! His pass was picked off and run back 57 yards to end our hopes of a comeback win. Then showing the savvy he lacked a minute earlier, Meadows led us 82 yards for a meaningless touchdown with 3 huge pass completions. As we let off an onsides kick, the clock expired. Talk about blowing a golden opportunity. Final Score: Brigham Young 42, Rutgers 37 Player of the Week nominees: RB Carlton Duncan - 21 carries, 145 yards, 2 touchdowns I think I can safely say this kid is the real deal. Too bad we don't have 21 more of him. Injury Report ILB James Zandofsky's pulled quadriceps muscle, will keep him out another 5 Sophomore WR Buddy Lang suffered a very bad leg break, and will miss the rest of the season. We hope he can recover in time for next year and be the same player he was. Starting TE C.J. Rodriguez needs back surgery and will miss the rest of the season Recruiting Dream Recruit Updates QB Tony Richard Uh-oh. Tony is now visting Notre Dame and Illinois ahead of us.... I'm getting a bit nervous. CB Bernie Cousino Bernie is visiting Syracuse (the only other team offering him a scholarship), I hope we don't lose him. CB Harvey Jamison Things are still looking good here as it is Rutgers vs. Rice and we have an enormous distance advantage. Blue Chip Recruits here's an overview of our newest blue-chip prospect: CB Ron Sies Another small cover corner out of Peeksill, NY we felt we needed to offer Ron a scholarship due to the now total uncertaintly of landing any of our CB recruits. He's solid in man-to-man and has 11 interceptions this season. updates: K Victor Fragomeni Victor is visiting North Carolina and Virginia. I don't think our chances are too good. CB Steven Brewster Utah is now in the race for Steven (joining Pitt and us), but hasn't visited anywhere yet. WR Jimmy Brooks Jimmy is highly sought-after, but we think we have a very good chance at landing him. He hasn't visited anywhere yet. FB Adrian Ackerman Adrian is now visiting Penn State...this is getting depressing. OT Gerald Ford Gerald is visiting Oregon and Illinois ahead of us. I hope we land some of these guys. While once ceratin, i'm fearful we could completely lose out. In other recruiting... Only one player is visiting, a kicker.... I don't think our performance this year is helping the recruiting cause. At this point i'm basically scared shitless over the recruiting situation. I won't calm down until the letters of intent start coming in. |

Knight Knews
The Rutgers football program landed their first recruit of the year this week. The news comes on the tail of Rutgers near-upset of #25 ranked B.Y.U. Here's a quick glimpse at the first player to committ to playing for the Scarlet Knights: Ryan Murphy, a quarterback from Curtis High School in Staten Island, New York, has thrown for 6 touchdowns and over 1000 yards in his senior high school season, as well as rushing for 700+ more. Ryan had this to say about his decision: "It's always been a dream of mine to play for Rutgers, i've idolized this fine school ever since I was a child. I want to be a part of the group that brings them to national prominence." National scouts and insiders generally agree that Ryan will be probably just an 'average' college quarterback, and would most likely to take a back-seat to any first-class QB recruit Rutgers can land. Reports say that Rutgers has been heavily pursuing a "top high-school QB," but no further information was available at the time this story went to press. |

Week 7 Review
Pitt Panthers (3-2) at Rutgers Scarlet Knights (1-4) Last meeting: Last year at Pittsburgh, Pitt won 38-27 Pitt is favored by 9, despite being on the road The Coaches' poll ranks Rutgers #106 and BYU #48 Weather: 48 degrees and raining This game started off as good as the last one did bad... After a long Pitt kick return, Safety Kent Sawyer returned an interception 82 yards for a TD on the first play from scrimmage! Pitt quickly marched down the field and leveled the score. We drove quickly again, but I was pissed when the offensive coordinator wimped out and kicked a field goal on 4th and 1 from the Pitt 1 yard line. My anger was amplified 1000 times when on the ensuing kickoff Pitt went 93 yards to take the lead 14-10 -arghhh!! That kick return seemed to rip the hearts out of our team, we never showed any offensive life after it. Pitt dominated us running the ball, and converted what seemed to be every single 3rd down. Final Score: Pittsburgh 35, Rutgers 10 Player of the Week nominees: RB Carlton Duncan - 18 carries, 87 yards I think this is the first time he's ever been kept under 100 yards. He's still having an amazing freshman year Injury Report there are no new injuries of note. here are the old ones: ILB James Zandofsky's pulled quadriceps muscle, will keep him out another 5 weeks or so. Sophomore WR Buddy Lang suffered a very bad leg break, and will miss the rest of the season. We hope he can recover in time for next year and be the same player he was. Starting TE C.J. Rodriguez had back surgery and will miss the rest of the season Recruiting Dream Recruits DT Alvin Desantes A 6'3" 255 lb monster from Linwood, NJ - Alvin seems to posess all the tools to give an offense fits. Alvin's focus on distance and academics gives us a real good chance to land him despite not contacting him until now. Updates: QB Tony Richard Tony is now visiting his 3rd school ahead of us..... maybe he's just saving the best for last? CB Bernie Cousino Bernie is visiting Syracuse (the only other team offering him a scholarship), nothing new to report. CB Harvey Jamison Boise State and Western Michigan have joined the mix, I still hope Harvey follows his heart and preferences and stays in New Jersey. Blue Chip Recruits here's an overview of our newest blue-chip prospect: CB Justin Clark A big 6'1" CB who can cover. Not as good as some of our other CB recruits..but more likely to come here. We need a little confidence in some recruits. updates: K Victor Fragomeni I don't think we'll make his cut to his finalist schools. CB Steven Brewster We still have as good a shot as Utah or Pitt. WR Jimmy Brooks Jimmy is visiting Texas first.... I hope he at least looks at our campus before making a decision. FB Adrian Ackerman Adrian is now visiting Penn State, but i think our chances are still very good. OT Gerald Ford If he follows his preferences (distance and academics) he'll come here...but i think he's being seduced by the big-time programs. CB Ron Sies He may be a bit of a long-shot...but who isn't at this point. In other recruiting... It was nice having a recruit actually committ, even if he is only our 3rd choice at QB. All we have is 2 players visiting. We're talking with about 40 players right now, and we hope our 16 come out of them. |

Week 8-9 Review
We had week 8 off, and will cover the recruiting action from that week below. Rugters Scarlet Knights (1-5) at Boston College Golden Eagles (4-2) Last meeting: Last year at Rutgers, B.C. won 41-9 Boston College is favored by 27 at home The Coaches' poll ranks Rutgers #110 and B.C. #26 Weather: 73 degrees and fair The first quarter was real slow-going at first. Both defenses were shutting down each other's offense. Things were scoreless until QB Lewis Meadows lofted up a stupid pass that was returned 83 yards for a touchdown. In the second quarter, Meadows threw a second INT deep in our zone that led to a second B.C. touchdown. It was business as usual A few minutes later, Meadows fumbled on our own 8 yard line, and we handed them another touchdown. When B.C. scored to go up 28-0 just before the half, the game was over. Final Score: Boston College 28, Rutgers 3 Player of the Week nominees: OLB Ike Summers - 10 tackles, 6 assists, 2 sacks Injury Report there are no new injuries of note. here are players who will miss the next game: ILB James Zandofsky (quad pull) WR Buddy Lang (broken leg) TE C.J. Rodriguez (back surgery) CB J.J. Volz (knee surgery) Recruiting With week 8 off, we pruned our list of recruits and made a lot of what we knew would be last-minute contacts. Many players were set to make a decision. Before the games of week 8 we had a lot of players visiting, including some VERY big recruits...we just held our breath as we opened our mail.... Dream Recruits Deciding it was too late in the recruiting process to go after someone new, we stuck with who we had spoken and visited with and prayed for the best. Updates: QB Tony Richard... Say hello to our newest recruit!!!! Despite scaring the hell out of us with his visits to other schools, Tony later said he had planned on coming to Rutgers all along. CB Bernie Cousino it had always been a two-team race for Bernie, and this was a race we lost. Bernie is on his way to Syracuse - so at least we'll still see him once a year. CB Harvey Jamison Harvey has joined the Scarlet Knights! This recruiting class is shaping up to be our best ever! DT Alvin Desantes Despite being late to the recruiting party with Alvin, he took us up on our offer! 3-for-4 with our Dream Recruits aint bad at all! Blue Chip Recruits Can we duplicate the success we've had with our dream recruits? K Victor Fragomeni What a shocker! Despite thinking we had no chance with him, Victor has chosen to play at Rutgers! Lord knows we need him with the performance of Artie Kenny this season. CB Steven Brewster Steven is visiting right now, but i still don't think our chances are that great. WR Jimmy Brooks Jimmy has narrowed his choices to Rutgers, Maryland, and Colorado. I now think we will land him! FB Adrian Ackerman Adrian decided to go play at Penn State, since we were going to force him to change positions, i really can't blame the guy. OT Gerald Ford Another one of our late recruits joins us! Wow, i guess all our luck this season is off-field! CB Ron Sies Ronnie is now visiting, but i think he's the longest shot of all players we have contacted. Code:

Week 10 Review
Rutgers Scarlet Knights (1-6) at #6 Miami of Florida Hurricanes (6-1) Last meeting: Last season in Miami, they won 45-3. Miami is favored by 23 points at home The Coaches poll ranked Rutgers as #115 and Miami as #6 Weather: 83 degrees and fair Something told me I shouldn't feel too confident going in to play the #6 team in the nation, one that has trashed us historically. Surprisingly, we started off strong. Carlton Duncan ran for 15 and 14 yards on his first two carries, and we were in Miami's side of the field before having to kick. When Miami punted back, we ran the punt back 48 yards to their 5 yard line, setting up a Lewis Meadows -to- Walt Irwin TD pass. Early in the 2nd quarter, Miami's speed showed when they ran back a punt 65 yards to tie the game at 7. We played Miami amazingly close, and at the half the score was 10-7 Miami. We were actually out-playing the #6 team in the country (in their house). We had 10 first downs to their 5, and had been able to run the ball well so far. Without 2 Lewis Meadows interceptions, we surely would have been leading. Miami came out really fired up, and raced down the field to take a 17-7 lead, but after that things really slowed down again. We embarked on a long drive that took us into the fourth quarter, with good passing and running, and eventually settled for a field goal when an unnecessary roughness penalty backed us up from the 6 yard line. Still, we were hanging tight at 17-10. Painfully, Miami then went 80 yards on 3 running plays to go back up 2 scores 24-10. Miami scored again on their next drive and the game was out of reach Final Score: Miami 34, Rutgers 10 Player of the Week nominees: none. Injury Report the only new injury was WR Cole Upshaw twisting his ankle. He should play through it. Recruiting Before the games this week, we slashed our outstanding scholarhip offers...we left only 7 offers for the remaining 4 spots. Though a bit of a gamble, we think it will ensure we land the top notch players rather than so-so ones. Code:
CB Ron Sies CB Stephen Brewster both are semi-longshots...it's be nice to land one.

Virginia Tech Hokies (5-3) at Rugters Scarlet Knights (1-7) Last meeting: Last year at V.T., the Hokies won 48-17 Virginia Tech is favored by 18 on the road The Coaches' poll ranks Rutgers #120 and B.C. #36 Weather: 42 degrees and fair A couple turnovers by us (A Meadows interception on our side of the field is naturally one of those) lead to easy Tech scores, and it was an easy first half for V.T. - they cruised into halftime up 21-0. The second half was a cakewalk as well, and we never put up any fight at all. Final Score: Virginia Tech 42, Rutgers 7 Player of the Week nominees: DE Terry Jackson - 10 tackles, 3 assists, 1 sack Injury Report There are no new injuries. Here are the two players who will miss next week's Princeton game. WR Buddy Lang - Broken Leg and CB J.J. Volz - knee surgery Recruiting We were happy to round out the scholarship players this week with two new additions: Code:

Week 12 Review
Rugters Scarlet Knights (1-8) at Princeton Tigers (0-9) Last meeting: Last year at Rutgers, we won easily 48-16 Princeton is favored by 2 at home The Coaches' poll ranks Rutgers #121 and Princeton #125 Weather: 58 degrees and fair A little history is necesary for this one. In the 3 meetings since this rivalry has been re-kindled, we are undefeated against Princeton. Not only hasn't Princeton beaten us, they've never won since joining Division I-A and the Big East. 43 straight losses, and we'll be damned if we send our seniors out as the only team to lose to these bums. We looked a little off-kilter early, and Princeton jumped to a 3-0 lead after a lousy punt from deep in our zone gave them excellent opportunity. After that we rebounded with a quick TD drive, ending on a 39 yard pass from Lewis Meadows to Ricardo Schroeder. Meadows added another right at the end of the 2nd quarter to go up 14-3. A couple handoffs to Carlton Duncan and we realized this baby was going to be over. Duncan had a terrific game, and Meadows had perhaps the best of his season as we rolled over the lowly Princeton tigers, who are probably having the worst run in Division I history. Final Score: Rutgers 40, Princeton 6 Player of the Week nominees: WR Ricardo Schroeder - 10 catches, 227 yards, 2 touchdowns DE Terry Jackson - 6 tackles, 2 assists, 4 sacks K Arite Kenny - was 3-of-3 in the field goal department, it's about time. QB Lewis Meadows - 22-for-39 for 334 yards, 3 touchdowns, 2 ints. RB Carlton Duncan - 27 carries for 99 yards. In just his 10th game, as a freshman, Carlton has become our all-time leading rusher! Injury Report WR's Buddy Lang and Neal Gray will miss the last game of the season. Recruiting we're looking for walk-on committments to fill out our class, it may be a few weeks before anyone is willing to committ. At least no-one has said 'no' so far! |

Week 13 Review
#9 Syracuse Orangemen (8-2) at Rutgers Scarlet Knights (2-8) Last meeting: Last year at Rutgers, Syracuse murdered us 58-17 Syracuse is favored by 26 on the road The Coaches' poll ranks Rutgers #113 and Syracuse #9 Weather: 52 degrees and rain Going into this game, I felt like wincing. When you have a top bowl contender coming into town who has everything at stake, it can get ugly. The first half we played surprisingly well. Despite the fact that Syracuse moved the ball pretty easily, our defense came up with some big stops on 3rd and 4th down and kept us in the game. QB Lewis Meadows was doing the opoosite, 3 INT's in the first half led to us trailing in a respectibly close 14-0 game at the half. The second half was a lot more of what I thought this game would be, Syracuse steam-rolled us, and our touchdowns came much too late to help us. Final Score: Syracuse 49, Rutgers 20 Player of the Week nominees: WR Ricardo Schroeder - 6 catches, 153 yards will this one help him to an all-conference selection? Injury Report The season is over, and only the injury to sophomore WR Buddy Lang concerns me going into next year, his broken leg requires another 24 weeks of recovery. I hope he is still the same player next fall. Recruiting We're still trying to convince guys to come here and try to earn a scholarship later. No luck yet. Code:

Post-season wrap-up
Texas knocked off two-time defending champion Ohio State in the Rose Bowl to win the national title, 45-16. Texas last won the title in 2002, and was followed by 2 Ohio State titles. Player of the Year! Fresno State's Junior QB Percy Bronwell earned the Heisman Trophy in a tight race. Percy threw for nearly 4,000 yards and 36 touchdowns in his second year as starter. His Fresno State team finished ranked #15 for the year. All-Americans While Rutgers players failed to win any hardware on a national level, the Big East awards was a different story. Code:

2005 Summary for Rutgers
Code:
What the numbers mean Offensively, our rushing attempts, yards, and yards-per-carry were all up over last year - no doubt thanks to freshman Carlton Duncan. But at QB we struggled, and this lead to our first steps backward as a team. Our pass attempts, completions, and average per attempt all dropped. Sadly our turnover ratio was also made worse, this was due to the inaccurate passing that plagued us. Our 3rd down conversions dropped, and the worst stat was our points per game dropping almost a full touchdown. Defensively, we play like a see-saw. Last year when we stressed run defense, our DB's were torched. This year with a beefed up secondary, they took advantage of our run defense again. While playing much better against the pass, it was offest by the fact that teams ran all over us. Teams converted 3rd downs more often as well, but amazingly we held teams to an average of 5 points less per game.

We're looking back and looking forward...
a 2-9 season really hurt. After 3 straight 4 win seasons I thought we might be ready to take a step up. Instead, we missed that step and fell on our asses. I attribute this to a few things: Quarterback - there is no denying we sorely missed the presence of graduate Darryl Perrin. It's sad when I long for a QB who threw as many interceptions (18) as touchdowns (18) in his final year. Run Defense - While I thought our D-line would be pretty good, I was sorely mistaken. Teams trampled us, often putting themselves in 3rd and short positions, easily converted. Kicking - place kicker Artie Kenny single handedly (footedly?) cost us 2 easy games early in the season. While he rebounded late, our season was already swriling down the toilet at that point. next year With our strongest recruiting class yet, we're hoping to find 3 or 4 impact rookies. Players who can make the same sort of impact that Terry Jackson or Carlton Duncan made in their freshman year. Also, an improved QB playing with our stellar set of recievers could really do some damage against the rest of the Big East. Odds and Ends Princeton still has not won a game, they are 0-44. We still haven't won a Big East game over a team other than Princeton. Despite his amazing freshman season, RB Carlton Duncan is inexplicably the angriest guy on the team (with a happiness of '0'). I hope this doesn't become a problem next year! Thanks to everyone for reading - see you next season! |

you keep recruiting guys, but you don't offer them scholarships. Eventually you'll get some guys who aren't being offered scholarships anywhere who will come play non-scholarship for you. You can get some decent backup types and the occassional starter! |

Too bad about BYU. That was a real might-have-been. But congrats on that recruiting class. It looks mighty tasty. Hope next year brings the luck on the field you didn't have this season. |
