A fresh start to Division I, new conference, new coach
I have decided to bring the GWAL back as I will be coaching a team in the dynasty. The GWAL will be prestige 3. I decided to try something different, I got an average rating of all the schools that were in prestige 3 conferences, and I have made all GWAL schools start with a team prestige of 42. All head coaches in the GWAL will begin with a coach prestige of 5.
Now obviously that may create havoc for the first season, as conference play could be pretty even. But I expect teams to have a rise or fall in prestige based on w-l record, schedule strength, recruiting results, and assistant coaches. I guarantee not all the GWAL schools will be prestige 42 schools after season 1. I am taking over Wichita West. For those that need a recap of the GWAL schools, we have: Bishop Carroll Wichita East Wichita Heights Kapaun Mt. Carmel Wichita North Wichita Northwest Wichita South Wichita Southeast Wichita West |

For those that were in the interactive coaching dynasty, I feel bad that it was cut short. If any of you want to participate, I might be able to make it happen. Although the focus will be on whatever team I am coaching, I would be happy to give anybody details of any specific schools they are curious about.
Here is a look at my coach card for the 2012-2013 season: Code:

I have hired my staff. With my skills coming in the scouting and coaching defense department, I was hoping to find somebody with a recruiting rating of 65 or higher, and somebody with a coaching offense rating of 65 or higher. I went 1 for 2.

2012-2013 Non-Conference Scheduling
We were invited to the Las Vegas Invitational as the 8th seed in an 8 team tournament. Obviously this means we'll probably go and get smashed by a power conference team, but what the hell. It's 3 games of tournament experience. I accepted the invite. Our first round game will be against Mississippi State, then we will play either Nevada or Colorado. June 2012 Tulsa, Oral Roberts, and Arkansas have offered to play us. Those are 3 tough teams. I decided to accept the offer from Oral Roberts and decline the offers from Tulsa and Arkansas. In addition, I have sent invites to Seattle, Elon, and Chicago State to play us at home. All winnable games. July 2012 Scheduling All 3 of our offers were accepted, and we received offers from Murray State and Mississippi Valley State for home games, as well as an offer from Montana State for a home and home series, starting in Wichita this season. I accepted all the offers. This means we have 4 games left to schedule, and all of them have to be on the road. I sent offers to go to Kansas State and Houston Baptist. July 2012 Recruiting We have 3 scholarships to fill this season, we are losing a PF, SF, and SG. Unfortunately the best recruit out of Kansas this season is a 3 star SG, who already has interest in coming to Wichita West. I'm going to add a lot of 4 star recruits to see if I can sway some of them. I can have a call list of up to 20, and here is our initial list of 20: Code:

August 2012 Scheduling
Kansas State and Houston Baptist accepted our offers, now I have to schedule 2 more road games. I have offered to go on the road to Cleveland State and SE Missouri State. August 2012 Recruiting I have offered scholarships to Billie Hight, John Delvecchio, and Rene Duhemel. Nobody new is showing interest, we'll see how it develops. September 2012 Scheduling Our schedule is complete, as Cleveland State and SE Missouri State have accepted our offers. September 2012 Recruiting I have invited Rene Duhemel to visit Wichita West. He has very high interest in us, in fact we are the only school he's interested in at the moment. Also making a campus visit is Brian Harris. He's a 4 star recruit and has us in his top 5. Same with Robbie Manning. |

I've decided I'm probably only going to report on offseason recruiting when we get a signing, I could go on and on in recruiting, but the meat of the dynasty will be inseason. That being said, it is time to reveal the roster and schedule for the 2012-2013 Wichita West Pioneers:
Code:
Nobody was willing to take a redshirt, but Erich Koziol is on academic suspension until Jan. 1, 2013. The players to watch on this team are Carl Carl (what a name), Dennis Welter, Colby Stromberg, and Tony Arce. Those will be our top 4 players and the team will be based around them. Code:

To the best of my ability, I have aligned the conferences as they are in reality in 2012 (VCU/Butler in A-10, Mizzou, A&M in SEC, and so forth.)
I also am working on real life coaches, entering as many real life coaches names into the dynasty as possible. I will probably start playing games tomorrow. |

I'll be interested in hearing how the Illini do under Coach Groce if you don't mind branching outside of conference for some level of national news.

I am going to set this dynasty report up as mainly newspaper articles, with coaches comments after every game and every big event throughout the season and offseason. I will also be reporting on the progess of Illinois (as per hoopguys request). It's going to be a trial thing at first, so let me know if you guys like it.
Also, I'd like interaction, so for all you readers that want to play a character (angry fan, evil columnist, etc etc) please do so. The more interaction the better. First reports coming up with preseason polls and a preview of the Las Vegas Invitational |

Nov. 13, 2012 The preseason polls are out, and if you go by them, there are a lot of teams that should be in the running for the NCAA title at the end of the season. Code:
As you can see, there are 6 teams that are receiving first place votes. The surprise has to be Creighton at #3. Not sure who came up with these polls, but wow. In other news, our Wichita West Pioneers begin the season at the Las Vegas Challenge. Here are the seeds for this tournament. 1. Mississippi State 2. Dayton 3. Clemson 4. Nevada 5. Colorado 6. Valparaiso 7. Troy 8. Wichita West This doesn't look to be a strong field. Mississippi State might not even be the best team in the field. Look for some upsets. The Pioneers could come out of this tournament with a victory or two, but we know they will definitely come out with some good tournament experience. |

Pioneer Press Wichita West played a spirited game against Mississippi State tonight in the 2012 Las Vegas Classic. While the Pioneers never led, they did have it tied on 3 separate occasions in the first half, 2-2, 10-10, and 17-17. But the Bulldogs took control late in the first half and went on a huge run to open the second half to roll to a 66-48 victory. The Pioneers had 2 players in double figures. William Mahler had 12 and Dennis Welter had 11. Carl Carl had 13 boards for Wichita West. This means the Pioneers drop to the losers bracket of the Las Vegas Classic, where they will take on Colorado, who lost to Nevada 74-63. In other games, (2) Dayton beat (7) Troy 67-54 and (3) Clemson rolled over (6) Valparaiso 60-31. Code:

Pioneer Press Coach Mike Schaplowsky has his first career win after Wichita West dominated Colorado in the Las Vegas Classic tonight. Carl Carl was a beast tonight, as he had 9 points, 12 rebounds, and 6 blocks, and the Pioneers held Colorado to just 34.4% shooting in a 68-56 win. The Pioneers led by 19at one point in the second half, proving they can beat the power conference teams. Dennis Welter led all scores with 17 for the Pioneers, and it seems that coach Schaplowsky has settled on a 9 man rotation for the moment. "I feel comfortable with these 9 guys. We've got a great sixth man in Tony Acre, who could just as easily start. Not saying the other 6 guys on the team won't get a chance, you never know when injuries or foul trouble will be a problem." The Pioneers will play for 5th place on the 26th (weird scheduling for a tournament), and they will play Troy, a 65-54 winner over Valparaiso. In other games (1) Mississippi State hammered (4) Nevada 80-48, and (2) Dayton was all over (3) Clemson 69-49. Code:

I received a letter in the mail today from Illinois head coach John Groce. He was one of my mentors when I was going to coaching clinics and camps in the Midwest. Great guy. Here's the letter.
Coach Schaplowsky, First let me congratulate you on making it to the division one level, I knew it was only a matter of time. It looks like you've got a good core over at Wichita West. Let me fill you in on whats going on over here at Illinois. As you know, this is my first year here since Bruce Weber left to be the coach at Kansas State. So far things are going well. We've played 2 games so far: We beat Navy 95-55, and we snuck by Bradley 83-80. We are currently ranked 12th in the nation, jumping up from 23rd last week. How about BYU at #1? And Vanderbilt at #2? Strange rankings. Anyhow, got to get ready for Arkansas Pine-Bluff, we play them in a few days. I'll check in with you from time to time, I'm sure you'll catch our scores on the internet, I'll catch your scores on the internet. Hey.. whats say we set up a game? How's next year sound? Hell, we'll come to Wichita, could be fun. We'll talk. Best of luck. John Groce Head Coach Illinois Mens Basketball |

Per hoopsguys request, I will be adding info about Illinois, so I've decided to change my format. I will go week by week, giving quick recaps of Wichita West games this week, but I will also give scores for all of Illinois games and standings for the GWAL and Big Ten from time to time. I don't know that I'll do the top 25 polls every week, I might. This will give hoopsguy something to go off of if he decides to add extra input to this dynasty report. Unless I have specific requests, I am not going to be following the NCAA as a whole, mostly just Wichita West and Illinois.

Nov. 26-Dec. 2, 2012
Nov. 26, 2012 Las Vegas Challenge Fifth Place Game Wichita West (1-1) vs. Troy (1-1) This game was close throughout, as we couldn't hit the broad side of a barn. We ended up shooting 33.3% for the game, but Troy wouldn't stop fouling us, so we went 22-27 from the line. Both Carl Carl and Joseph Morre had double doubles, and we pulled away late, 59-50. The bad news is we've lost Jerry Cosper for 67 days to a pulled quad. Here are the other scores from the final day of the tournament. 7th place game: Valparaiso beat Colorado 59-55 3rd place game: Clemson beat Nevada 71-69 Championship game: Mississippi State beat Dayton 74-70. A side note, with the week by week report, I won't be posting box scores for each game, just a quick game recap. I will however, be giving team stats at the end of every month so you guys can see who is doing well. Nov. 29, 2012 Chicago State (0-2) @ Wichita West (2-1) Tonight is our first divison 1 home game, not just for the season, but overall. It is a sellout crowd. The game didn't dissapoint. We got off to a very slow start, down by 9 early on. Both teams started red hot. Eventually we start to get in a groove, led by Denis Welter who scored 30 points on 11-15 shooting and 5-8 from three point land. Without him, we probably lose this game. As it stands, we pulled out an 81-69 victory. Our friends from Illinois had 1 game this week, a 91-37 thrashing of Arkansas-Pine Bluff. Sorry hoopsguy, not much to report this week. If you are looking for something specific, let me know. I'll do whatever I can to give you enough info so that you can have some interaction with this dynasty. Also, whoever else is interested, let me know. Last edited by collegesportsfanms : 10-08-2012 at 12:58 AM. |

Dec. 3-9, 2012
Dec. 3, 2012 Seattle (0-1) @ Wichita West (3-1) We jumped out to an 11-2 lead and never looked back, as we held Seattle to less than 20% shooting in the first half. They ended up shooting 37.5% for the game, and we outrebounded them 34-20. Colby Stromberg led the way with 14 points and 5 assists. All 13 available players played and got at least 3 minutes of action as we won 58-40. The only bad news is that we will be without starting PF Joseph Moore for 14 days, as he has Patellar Tendanitis. Yikes! Dec. 8, 2012 Elon (1-3) @ Wichita West (4-1) Daniel Burns is in the starting lineup tonight for the injured Joseph Moore. This should be another game that we win easily, but I wanted Elon on the schedule because my ex-gf played softball there. This gave her a chance to come and see me. But more on that later, now its gametime. Unfortunately this game was much, much closer than it should have been. We had 12 first half turnovers and went into the locker room tied at 26. Never really got in a rhythm offensively, but back to back three pointers by Colby Stromberg gave us an 8 point lead late, and we ended up holding on 60-51. William Mahler was actually our player of the game, he had 10 points, 4 rebounds, and 3 assists. Stromberg led us in scoring with 19. After the game me and Sadie (the ex) went out to dinner, talked about the game. She wished me luck on the season, I asked her how she was doing, one thing led to another... and well lets just say we are no longer ex's. Bow chica wow wow. As for Illinois this week, they had a couple cream puff games as well. They rolled over Marshall 102-64 and beat Loyola-IL 73-39. Next week gets a little tougher for them as they take on Louisville and Creighton, both 5-2 teams at the moment. Guys, I realize this dynasty isn't going to draw as much interaction as my interactive dynasties, but I appreciate any interaction I get, especially from people that were in my interactive coaching dynasty (korme, bbgunn, ntndeacon, hoopsguy, muns, rjolley). I'll take whatever I can get. Hope you all are enjoying thus far, and if theres anything you'd like to see added, let me know. |

Congrats on signing the #1 foreign SG. I'm not sure I see the culture fit from France to Wichita, so I can only conclude that he was excited about the opportunity to learn from Coach Schaplowsky and his fine coaching staff.
I guess congrats on Sadie as well? 67 days for a pulled quad? Yikes ... that is a rough injury. |

Thanks hoopsguy. Yeah recruiting isn't my strong suit when it comes to playing sports games, usually I let the computer AI deal with most of it. On FBCB its pretty simple though. Really all you gotta do is set your recruiting actions once a month.
As for the Sadie thing, that was just a little roleplay type thing I decided to throw in the mix. There really is a Sadie that went to Elon and played softball, and we were friends, but not anymore. Long story short I wasn't good enough for her. Oh well, thats life. I might run with the Sadie thing in the dynasty, or that might be the end of it. Really haven't decided yet, as it was a spur of the moment thing. Yea, those injuries are tough! Thanks for the response |

Dec. 10-16, 2012
Dec. 13, 2012 Murray State (1-5) @ Wichita West (5-1) Murray States record is very deceiving, as they have played a very tough schedule so far. This is going to be a tough game. And it started as such as the Racers raced out to a 17-5 lead. Then, inexplicably, we scored 19 in a row to take a 24-17 lead and never looked back. We led 28-21 at halftime and built that lead to as many as 24 in the second half. Denis Welter led us in scoring with 24 and Colby Stromberg added 19, as we rolled 73-54. Dec. 15, 2012 Wichita West (6-1) @ Oral Roberts (4-3) This is our first true road game after a neutral site tournament and 4 straight home games. Good news on our side as Joseph Moore has been cleared to play. He won't start, and I'll probably only play him about 10 or 15 minutes to see how he does. This was about as ugly as a game can get. Neither team led by more than a few points, each team had 16 turnovers, and we committed 11 second half fouls. Despite all that, we had the last shot with a chance to win. Colby Stromburg missed a three pointer from the left corner. Oral Roberts grabbed the rebound as the buzzer went off and we lost a heartbreaker, 49-48. Despite the loss, Stromburg was still voted player of the game as he ended with a game high 19 points. Our friends from Illinois had a rough week, as they lost to Louisville 76-73, and lost to Creighton 61-55. They are now 5-2 on the season. Dec. 17-23, 2012
Dec. 18, 2012 Wichita West (6-2) @ Cleveland State (6-3) I got to Cleveland a day before the team did, as Bone Thugs n Harmony were performing on the 17th, and that was a concert to see! Now I had to get my team ready for a big game. I inserted Joseph Moore back into the starting lineup as he is almost 100%. This was a tight game throughout, but we led the whole way. Momentum changed early in the second half when we were up 47-41. Cleveland State got 2 technicals in the span of a minute, and we went on a huge run. By the time the damage was done, we led 63-41. They went on an 18-5 run to end the game, but by then the damage was done. Denis Welter led us with 24 points, and we won 68-59. Dec. 21, 2012 Mississippi Valley State (2-6) @ Wichita West (7-2) Not expecting this game to be very close, but I also know that we can't have any letdowns. We have to keep putting the pedal to the metal and dominate this game. And as expected, not a lot to talk about in this one. We forced 19 turnovers, committed only 8, held them to just 29.3% shooting, shot 59% ourselves, and got everybody in the game for at least 4 minutes. Everything was so balanced for us that the POTG was Colby Stromberg, who finished with 9 points and 5 assists. And oh yea, the final score was 64-32, we won. Checking in on Illinois they played in the Las Vegas Shootout this week, where they were the #2 seed. Their first game was against (15) Portland State, in which they won 77-66. Then they took on (10) Rider, and were absolutely embarassed, 91-69. Despite how it looks, this isn't a totally bad loss, as Rider is very good this year, having already beaten teams like Gonzaga and Vanderbilt, Bucknell and Lafayette. Coach Groce at Illinois shouldn't feel too terrible about this loss. |
