I don't see Vlade not going with Doncic, but at the same time fully expect him to somehow fall to the Mavs for some reason.

I feel like this draft is one of the biggest unknowns we have ever had. Outside the 1st pick, it seems everything is up for grabs.

I don't see history judging this Hawks-Mavs trade very well... Coup for the Mavs IMO.

+1

Hawks already had a bottom 10 defense - it's about to get worse.

Or Trae Young could end up being the next Curry while the Mavs just got the next Marco Jaric. NBA draft is far from predictable. Trae Young doesnt strike me as a player that wont be able to handle the next level. He was dealing with double teams and half court traps the entire 2nd part of the season.

True, although Jaric didn't have nearly the same European career as Doncic has to this point (and in a much stronger league). Not sure Trae Young would have logged more than 8-10 mins a game at best in the Spanish league last season - maybe for one of the bottom of the ladder teams.

Don't forget, Atlanta picked up a protected future first for the trade as well. They did well. Young will be a good player, though Doncic will be a better player over the first couple of years at least.

LOL! I have four different message boards up discussing the draft and someone has now made the same observation on all of them.

Just don't understand the Sixers trading Bridges, who was a perfect pick. Maybe they foresaw chemistry issues?

They secretly slid in Hinkie to be the GM for the draft. And the combination of a project player plus an unprotected future #1 was too enticing for him! #process2.0

Pretty funny when you bet over 2.5 on Villanova players in the first round. I’m thinking it’s Bridges, Donte and Brunson. Then Brunson doesn’t go but Omari Spellmn goes 30th

I was watching the draft in the kitchen at work and even in Australia two separate people said basically the same thing, while I at least thought it in my head.

Hawks gonna Hawks.

You pass up at least a potential generational talent to draft a guy who couldn't guard 50 year olds on a dare.

Write it down: Jon Koncak ends up with a better NBA career than Trae "I disappeared faster than Hoffa" Young.

Brown said they loved Bridges. After they picked him, Suns offered Smith plus the unprotected 2021 1st (which Brown noted will probably be the first year when high school players are eligible again for the draft). Per Brown, he couldn't pass up the 2021 first, and, reading between the lines, they intend to dangle that pick in front of the Spurs as part of a Leonard offer.

I don't get the full appeal of that pick. In 2021, the Heat will have all their big/bad contracts off the books (Dragic, Bosh, Ty Johnson, Whiteside and Waiters). They will have gone from a $115 mil salary cap level 19/20 to about $25 mil in 20/21. If you assume their draft picks and a few mid level exception FAs, they should have enough room for 2-3 Max guys plus have added 2 more first round picks. I can't see anyway that Riley + 2 max cap slots + no pick does not equal a playoff team in the East. There's no reason for them to tank that year without their pick. I think the Suns were smart to move it as it will be less appealing the closer you get to it. Remember, the Heat have only drafted 10th or lower (10th -Winslow) once in the last 10 years. They've been mostly in the teens since Lebron left. I could maybe see them bottoming out in 2020 (have their pick and some bad contracts left), but by 2021 I expect them to put on the full court press in FA.

Any unprotected pick that belongs to a team without an obvious path to contention has good value. It's definitely an asset that could be part of a package to bring in another star if the opportunity presents itself.

The Sixers saved a million, which helps them get to max cap space, and got the higher upside player. The Suns got a NBA ready wing that plays defense, which they desperately needed.

Both teams checked off the boxes they wanted to check off in this deal.

Yeah, I think it has value - but people are acting like the Suns gave up a potential top 3 pick to Philly. It's probably going to be in the 12-17 range. So, would you trade the 16th pick this year plus the 14th pick in 3 years to get the 10th pick now? Seems like a pretty fair trade. Where it may really work out is if Philly can parlay it into a bigger player because someone else really values it.

Still, you have to wonder if going from a very talented/ready wing to compliment Simmons and Embiid to a project is worth a 1st 3 years from now if you are trying to win. If Philly doesn't trade this pick for an upgrade, I don't think you can look at this trade as a success for them. Smith is a pretty big project and I'd be shocked if he got any kind of minutes next year for Philly.

I see Young as a guy who can score a lot of points and put up big numbers on a bad team, but I don't see him being a guy who helps a team win a championship. I think Doncic is a potential franchise player.

Don't forget with the 76ers getting the Heat pick from the Suns, there is talk that the one and done rule is going to be ending, and that it will end for the 2021 draft at the earliest.
