The Georgia Baseball Association: An OOTP 6.5 Dynasty

THE GEORGIA BASEBALL ASSOCIATION
An OOTP6.5 Dynasty Thread

Well, Markus has given me permission to take this thing, which we both believe to be in the final beta stages, for a public spin. I've set up a 24-team association, with teams based on various high schools around Columbus, and Metro Atlanta. I decided to "doctor" things a little to help my own personal immersion at the beginning of my 30-season presim for history. I manually adjusted the fan loyalty and market sizes for all 24 teams so that certain ones would have certain advantages and disadvantages. These values were based loosely on overall athletic performance of these schools, with certain favorites of mine being big-market just for fun. Here is the league structure:

LEAGUE DIVISION TEAM MARKET LOYALTY TIDBIT
EASTERN NORTHLAKE Druid Hills Red Devils Tiny Fair Small school next to Emory University that stinks in athletics.
EASTERN NORTHLAKE Lakeside Vikings Good Poor Played for a title in football one year and only drew around 500.
EASTERN NORTHLAKE St. Pius X Golden Lions Good GREAT Most rabid fans I've seen at every sport, pretty good athletes.
EASTERN NORTHLAKE Tucker Tigers HUGE GREAT C'mon, you KNOW I'd make the Tigers an elite team!
EASTERN PERIMETER Chamblee Bulldogs Average Average Usually not good, but not bad, either.
EASTERN PERIMETER Dunwoody Wildcats Good Good Solid athletic program with solid fan support.
EASTERN PERIMETER Marist War Eagles HUGE GREAT Similarly, you KNOW I had to make them Tucker's nemesis.
EASTERN PERIMETER North Springs Spartans Small Average Have struggled at every sport lately.
EASTERN SOUTH DEKALB Redan Raiders Good Good Never big winners, but have had some big prospects in baseball.
EASTERN SOUTH DEKALB Southwest DeKalb Big GREAT A tradition-rich place that I wanted to be strong.
EASTERN SOUTH DEKALB Stephenson Jaguars HUGE Very Good Always loaded with athletes, and community support is strong.
EASTERN SOUTH DEKALB Stone Mountain Pirates Average Average They're never awful, but they're never that good, either.
WESTERN WEST COBB Harrison Hoyas Big Very Good Strong program in an affluent area of West Cobb.
WESTERN WEST COBB Marietta Blue Devils Really Big Very Good Old money meets poverty in the only city of Marietta school.
WESTERN WEST COBB McEachern Indians Big Good Right around the corner from VPI97's house.
WESTERN WEST COBB South Cobb Eagles Average Average Buzzbee is an alum of this place.
WESTERN EAST COBB Lassiter Trojans HUGE GREAT Baseball National Champs in '99. Strong every year.
WESTERN EAST COBB Pope Greyhounds Slightly Above Avg Good Similar resources to Walton and Wheeler, but never seem to win much.
WESTERN EAST COBB Walton Raiders Big Good Solid athletic school in a very wealthy community.
WESTERN EAST COBB Wheeler Wildcats Big Good Ditto to Walton.
WESTERN COLUMBUS Brookstone Cougars Really Big GREAT My alma mater. Had to make 'em good.
WESTERN COLUMBUS Columbus Blue Devils Big Very Good The Big Hurt played here.
WESTERN COLUMBUS Hardaway Hawks Good Very Good Always-soild baseball program.
WESTERN COLUMBUS Shaw Raiders Really Big Average Talented teams, but mediocre fan support.

As mentioned, I'm going to presim 30 years for history. However, I'm going to do something different than I've ever done: actually report on each season--the stars, the champs, etc., so that I can take over a team in 2001 with some feel of immersion into the league.

I'm disappointed in you, SkyDog.

How could you resist the lure of the Macon Whoopee?

STAR PERFORMANCES
BATTERS, OPS >.975
LF William Benitez, Lakeside, 30 years old: .350-26-107 with 63 doubles.
LF Robert "Nine Fingers" Walker, North Springs, 37 years old: .316-30-96 with 48 doubles, 100 walks
LF John Knight, Stephenson, 25 years old: .332-40-117. Hmmmm...a young stud on a big-market team. Knight could do some serious damage as a Jaguar for years to come.
SS Pedro Aranda, Hardaway, 26 years old: .314-30-102, 46 2B, 88 BB, 35SB.
1B Valentin Bautista, Shaw, 26 years old: .326-36-113
1B Michael "The General" Byron, Stephenson, 27 years old: .310-40-108. Byron and Knight look like they could be a lethal combination for Stephenson.

HR > 45 (not previously listed)
RF Clifford Cosper, Stone Mountain, 26 years old: .297-47-118, 36 SB.

PITCHERS, ERA < 2.75
Nathaneil Bruns, South Cobb, 24 years old: 19-9, 1.97, 266 K's This guy was waaaaayyyy better than anyone else in the league this year, and is signed through 1972 with the Eagles. He was the 1(1) pick in the fantasy draft, and with good reason. Next-best ERA in the association? 2.67.
Steven Gonser, Tucker, 27 years old: 15-7, 2.67, 225 K's

PITCHERS, WHIP <1.00 (not previously listed)
None. Just Gonser (0.84) and Bruns (0.99)

DISPOSITION CHANGES
On July 1st, North Springs set its focus to rebuilding, and Stephenson to win now.
Marietta, Lakeside, Redan, Tucker and Hardaway set their foci to win now on 7/13, 7/14, 7/18, 7/19 and 7/23
Obviously, I need to stop on August 1st and see what teams' records are at that point, to get a better feel for these decisions. Five of the decisions look good. The North Springs and Redan decisions look bad in hindsight. However, I know that there's more to the decision than merely record. I know that team age goes into the decision, and I think contracts do, too.

POSTSEASON RESULTS
FIRST ROUND
Tucker over Southwest DeKalb, 4 games to 2
Stephenson over Marist, 4 games to 2
Brookstone over Wheeler, 4 games to 1
McEachern over Hardaway, 4 games to 1

LEAGUE CHAMPIONSHIP SERIES
Tucker over Stephenson, 4 games to 1
Brookstone over McEachern, 4 games to 3 (Brookstone wins game 7 in the bottom of the 10th as pinch hitter Ronald Broaddus, a backup shortstop, singles in the game-winner in a thriller.)

WORLD SERIES
Tucker over Brookstone, 4 games to 1. Tucker left fielder Pedro Valdecilla singles in the winning run in the bottom of the 9th of game five to seal the deal. 2B Anthony Kohr was the Tigers' star of the postseason, batting .364 with an OPS of 1.123 in 16 games.

Looks like South Cobb fans enjoyed watching Nathaniel Bruns perform. He is "well known" both locally and nationally. I'm guessing that had a good bit to do with their jump in fan loyalty, considering they only went 77-85.

29 year old Pitcher Armando Tello from Cuba has moved to the US and is now a free agent.

Tello is a 3-star performer. He should be a nice pickup for someone. The other two aren't much.

I'm not sure what level to report on, but I'll start this season with all FA's who received contracts of $10M and up.

Marist: RF Albert Figueroa, $15.94M x 3 years. Figueroa is a 4-star player, solid defensively, and an outstanding leadoff hitter (80 contact, 132 eye, 67 speed, 68 stealing ability). He was .290-8-70, .402 OBP with 101 runs scored for Lassiter last season.
Stone Mountain: SP Stephen Gonser, $19.8M x 6. Big-market Tucker let him fly, instead signing a 3-star pitcher who had a 3.15 ERA last year. Is this a good move for the Pirates? Can they afford that contract long-term? Only time will tell.
Wheeler: 1B Henry Neidig, $10.4M x 4. Neidig is a 3-star first baseman with good range, and he's a solid hitter with average speed. Last season's numbers were .234-24-89, but his 60 in contact shows promise of better things to come for the 28-year old.
SW DeKalb: SP Basilio "Bingo" Valdes, $11.9M x 5. Valdes is a 3.5-star 27-year-old
Tucker: SS Sylvester Ward: $19.0M x 3. Yowza! Ward was a Gold Glove SS last year, and played in the All Star game. He's also got a pretty good bat (.310-17-94). HE comes over to Tucker from Stephenson.

Looks like $10M is a good threshold for reporting, at least for now.

TUC: 43-59, 12 games out of first

I can live with all of those decisions. Now, let's see if the ones who moved to the margins (Harrison and Brookstone) made deals accordingly...

BIG DEADLINE TRADES
(involving a 3.5-star or higher player, or 4-star or higher prospect)
Southwest DeKalb makes a big pickup, sending 3 prospects to North Springs in exchange for C Daniel Belknap, a 4-star 27-year-old. Belknap has a good bat and decent arm at catcher, and has hit .313 over the course of '70 and '71, wtih 26 homers last year, and 16 so far this year. The Spartans, who are set to "rebuilding" pick up three pretty good prospects for a guy who was making $5.7M, and was eligible to make more via arbitration. I'll give this one a thumbs-up.

Harrison and Walton make a BIG trade. The "win-now" Hoyas send 5-star pitching prospect Ramiro Chacon to Walton in exchange for 4.5 star 29-year-old SP Simon Martinez.

STAR PERFORMANCES
BATTERS, OPS >.975
CF Franklin Hiltner, Southwest DeKalb, age 26: .335-41-117, 33 SB.
RF John Holmes, Brookstone, age 25, .361-24-103, 108 BB
1B Leon "Space" Frisina, age 28, .321-41-121, 98 BB
LF William Benitez, Lakeside, 31 years old: ..349-25-103, 63 doubles--nearly a carbon copy of last year for him..
LF Robert "Nine Fingers" Walker, North Springs, 38 years old: .304-35-100, 119 walks

Walker and Benitez make this list for the second year in a row. Stephenson's one-two punch of Byron and Knight didn't make the list, but they didn't exactly stink, either. Byron had a .943 OPS, and Knight .917.

HR > 45 (if not previously listed)
None. Frisina and Hiltner tied for the overall lead with 41 each.

PITCHERS, ERA < 2.75
Nathaniel Bruns, South Cobb, 25 years old: 18-6, 2.32, 254 K's. Last year was no fluke. This guy is the best in baseball right now.
Xavier Ocejo, Stephenson, 27: 23-7, 2.40. He led the Jags to a Wild Card berth over Marist. Has 42 wins in two seasons.
Steven Gonser, Stone Mountain, 28, 13-8, 2.51. Tucker missed him a lot.
Kenneth "Specs" Patton, 34, 23-7, 2.59, 244 K. Nice follow-up to last year's Cy Young campaign. He has 41 wins in two years.

PITCHERS, WHIP <1.00 (not previously listed)
Only Gosner achieved this benchmark this year.

He's a 2.5-star player--a good-fielder at 2B/3B/CF, with 60 contact, 73 discipline, and very little power.

Dunwoody: RF Kenneth Sutherland--$10.5M x 6--This speedster, formerly with Southwest DeKalb, is one of the best leadoff man in the game right now. He has led the league in steals each of the past two seasons with 74 and 77, and is a good defensive outfielder as well. He's coming off of a .336-16-103 season in which he scored 123 runs and had a .406 OBP.

Hardaway: RF Davor "Champ" Fernandez--$18.7M x 4--Fernandez was an all-star for McEachern last year, putting up a .295-32-102 season. He also walked 118 times. He's got good range and an excellent arm in RF.

Lassiter: LF Christopher Dowden--$14.5M x 4--He's been an All-Star and a Gold Glove winner for Redan in the Eastern League, now he heads west. He has a cumulative .314 batting average, 49 homers and 202 RBI in his two seasons.

Columbus: SS Jose Iglesias--$16.82M x 5--The Blue Devils pick up a 2-time All Star, and very good defensive shortstop. Iglesias also has 45 homers, 89 steals, and a .283 average in two seasons.

Stephenson: SP Mark Hartwell--$19.5M x 5--The Jaguars pluck a 27-year-old All-Star pitcher from arch-rival Southwest DeKalb. Hartwell has 32 wins and a 3.72 ERA in two seasons

Lakeside: C Keneth Gaughan--$11.6M x 4--The Vikings grab this All-Star from Chamblee. Gaughan has hit .349, with not much power, in two seasons.

Walton: SP Floyd Perrotta---$19.3M x 3--Stone Mountain loses this power pitcher to the Raiders. Perotta was in the Top 10 in K's each of the last two seasons, and sports a 3.73 ERA.

Wheeler: RF Ernesto Palmieri--$12.2M x 3--OOTP's supply and demand FA system causes the Wildcats to overpay for this decent, but not great OF late in the FA period. His best season for rival Walton was last year: .278-10-52. He's pretty good defensively, but probably not worth this kind of cash.

AMATEUR DRAFT
1(1) pick: 20-year-old 3B Albert Lambert is the first pick. He's got some great potential as a power hitter, and has a very good arm at 3B.

JULY 31st REPORT

DISPOSITION CHANGES
Quote:
Druid Hills: The team has officially stated that it set its focus to rebuilding.
Tucker: The team has officially stated that it set its focus to win now!
North Springs: The team has officially stated that it set its focus to a balanced approach instead of rebuilding.
Harrison: The team has officially stated that it set its focus to a balanced approach instead of win now.
Walton: The team has officially stated that it set its focus to a balanced approach instead of rebuilding.
McEachern: The team has officially stated that it set its focus to win now!
I checked each one of these. They all make sense. Nice!

BIG DEADLINE TRADES
(involving a 3.5-star or higher player, or 4-star or higher prospect)
South Cobb appears to be building a powerhouse! They pick up a 5-star prospect, 23-year-old SP Bill Plumlee in a deal with Shaw. In exchange for Plumlee, the Eagles send a 3-star SP, a 3-star prospect, and some cash to the Raiders.

Not a big trade, but I think it worth noting that I just saw a "win-now" team (Tucker) unload three prospects for a 2.5-star veteran CF who will be a FA at the end of the season. Tucker had been starting a 1.5-star guy out there, and they are locked in a three-way race in their division with Pius and Lakeside, and are also right in thick of the Wild Card race. Good to see some nice anecdotal evidence that the "win now" logic is working!

More on this...on the next day, they trade more prospects for a SS. Their big signee from last year, SS Sylvester Ward, was out for the season due to injury. This is pretty cool to see!!!

Wheeler: SP Xavier Ocejo--$19.7M x 5--The Wildcats sign the 28-year-old two-time Eastern League Cy Young winner. Ocejo has racked up 62 wins and a 3.09 ERA in three seasons.

Tucker: CL Chad Canela--$11.6M x 3--The Tigers grab Southwest DeKalb's fireballing 27-year-old closer. Canela has 99 saves and a 2.90 ERA in his 3 seasons, and also has 264 K's in only 204 2/3 IP.

McEachern: 2B Anthony Kohr--$19.7M x 6--Kohr was a 2-time All Star in Tucker. He's very good defensively, and the 28-year-old has increased his homers in each of his three seasons, from 16 to 27 to 34 last season. Combine his newfound pop with his good walk totals and 30ish steals per season, and he makes a great #3 hitter. He dominated the 1970 postseason when Tucker won it all, turning in a 1.112 OPS in 16 games.

Lassiter: SP Thomas "The Musketeer" Loggins--$10.9M x 3--Loggins, pitching for Pius, no-hit hated World Champion Marist last year. he's a two-time All-Star who struggled in '71, but went 15-7 with a 3.32 ERA last season for the Golden Lions.

Harrison: CF Robert Hubbell--$17.3M x 7--28-year-old Hubbell is just about as complete a player as you'll see. He can hit (.299 last year), hit for power (twice surpassing 40 HR's), run (91 SB's in 3 seasons), and has good range in CF (71) and outstanding range (92) in right. Lassiter's loss is Harrison's gain.

St. Pius: RF Otha Dey--$12.8M x 3--Dey was allowed to become a FA by the Golden Lions, who re-signed him. The 27-year-old's production dropped noticeably from '71 (.330-26-107) to '72 (.261-21-93). Mediocre fielder.

Stephenson: 1B Mitchell "The General" Byron--$19.9M x 5--The Jaguars re-sign one of their big boppers. Byron has 105 HR, 318 RBI and a .309 batting average in three seasons.

Pope: 3B David See--$11.4M x 4--Good defense. Outstanding arm. Decent bat. Was with McEachern.

Harrison: 2B Clayton Santiago--$13.2 x 4--Supply and demand, plus Harrison has big bucks to spend. This guy is a solid fielder and mediocre hitter, with good speed. Probably won't be worth the $$$.

This is what I'm worried about. OOTP still seems to have these 5 K/9 1:1 K:BB guys that consistenetly do well. Can we get an update on him even if he doesn't make your normal pitchers' lists?

I can't wait until you post the modifiers (although I'm guessing they might not help until 6.5a is widely available?)

6.5a isn't going to have any development tweaks that I know of. I'm not posting them at this point because I'm not 100% certain that I can't get them any better. I'm continuing to run tests on modiifers on a laptop while the desktop runs this career up to 2000.

GETTING TO KNOW THE GBA

STATISTICS--Hitting
As I mentioned earlier, I applied creation modifiers to this league to adjust overall hitting downward. Therefore, this section is presented to help adjust your thinking as to what a "good" hitter and pitcher is in this league. Here are the overall stats over the last five seasons of the GBA, and how those numbers compare with MLB 1980-2004:

BATTING AVERAGE: .2588 (MLB: .2590, or -0.09% difference)
ON BASE PERCENTAGES: .3275 (.3245, +0.92%)
SLUGGING PERCENTAGE: .3968 (.3969, -0.03%)
OPS: .7243 (.7214, 0.40%)

Obviously, I've gotten these overall numbers very, very close to the 1980-2004 MLB time frame. Some specific stats are lower or higher than that (homers are 2.99% high, triples are 10.01% low, for example), but overall, I really can't complain. Here are the per 600 AB averages over the last five seasons in the GBA:

AB: 600
R: 81.08
H: 155.26
2B: 27.98
3B: 3.39
HR: 16.02
BB: 58.81
SO: 118.06
SB: 13.51

We don't use the DH in the GBA, so adjusting these numbers upward a bit, a truly "average" position player would have stats that look something like this if he got 600 AB:

Batting AB H 2B 3B HR R BB K AVG OBP SLG OPS
Overall 600 159 30 5 18 85 60 110 .265 ..335 ..422 .757

Further, as far as "milestone" seasonal numbers for hitters, here are the numbers of guys to break them in the last five seasons:

YR 40+HR 50+HR .550 SLG 1.000 OPS .333 AVG 50 SB
1995 3 0 8 1 7 3
1996 3 0 7 3 3 2
1997 6 0 12 4 3 6
1998 4 0 9 4 1 5
1999 4 2 5 1 2 5

SINGLE-SEASON RECORDS (both leagues combined)
Batting Average : 397, Jim Knorr (1987, South Cobb)
Homeruns : 59, Larry Lopez (1983, Harrison)
Runs Batted In : 174, John Romero (1977, Dunwoody)
At Bats : 685, Richard Stark (1970, Stone Mountain)
Hits : 236, Jim Knorr (1987, South Cobb)
Doubles : 63, William Benitez (1971, Lakeside), Raleigh Tressler (1980, Brookstone)
Triples : 20, Scott Kittinger (1977, St. Pius X), Paris Chiasson (1970, Wheeler)
Runs : 151, Thomas Escobar (1977, Dunwoody)
Bases On Balls : 144, Thomas Escobar (1982, Dunwoody)
Strikeouts : 202, Moses Garrison (1981, Redan)
Stolen Bases : 81, Kenneth Sutherland (1979, Druid Hills)
Hitting Streak : 36, Pedro Adorno (1983, Lakeside)
Rookie AVG : .343, Jack Kelly (1977, Columbus)
Rookie Hits : 212, Michael Gonsalves (1976, Marietta)
Rookie Homeruns : 34, Buster Hile (1985, Shaw)
Rookie RBI : 124, Chris Chai (1991, Walton)

50 homers is a true milestone in the GBA. Although two guys did it this year, it was last done in 1987 before that. It has been done a total of 14 times in 30 seasons. Larry Lopez, the single-season record holder, is the only GBA player to have done it more than once.

SUPERSTARS--Hitting
(Batters with both Contact and Power greater than or equal to 80.)

Curt "Tempo" Dale, age 29, RF, Walton: He has led the league in homers twice, and has hit 40 or more for four consecutive seasons. Dale has also won four Gold Gloves in right field. Oh yeah, and he's hit .316 or better in each of the past five seasons.

Albert "Dandy" Schneider, age 30, CF, Columbus: He's been an All-Star for seven consecutive seasons. An injury sidelined him for six weeks this season, keeping him from his fifth straight 30-HR season and 8th straight season with >100 runs scored. He can usually be counted on to steal 20-30 bases, too.

Kenneth Gonzalez, age 30, CF, Stephenson: This big bopper had 50 homers and 140 RBI's in 1999, and has hit 30 or more and driven in 100 or more runs for six straight seasons, and his lowest batting average during that run has been .293. He has two MVP Awards to his credit.

Kennith "Crusher" Trevino, age 27, C, Hardaway: In four full seasons, he has three All Star appearances. Expect big things from this kid.

SUPERSTARS--Pitching
(Stuff, Control and Movement all great than or equal to 80.)

Deivi Escalona, age 30, SP, Stephenson: He has a pair of Gold Gloves, and won this season's Cy Young Award and won 20 for the first time in his career. His ERA has dropped every year since 1994, beginning at 3.98 that year, falling to 2.31 in '99.
Gregory "Goldielocks" Caulder, age 27, SP, South Cobb: Looking at what he's done already, and the future potential in his ratings, this guy has the potential to be the greatest pitcher the GBA has ever seen. He burst on the scene at age 21 and won ROY honors with a 12-12, 3.86 campaign. He won his first Cy Young at age 23, and has won the last two Cy Young Awards, also. He holds the single-season record with 28 wins in '98, and has a total of 125 wins and 1682 strikeouts already in his young career.
Joseph "Bling Bling" Fischer, age 25, SP, Brookstone: This guy had a breakout year in '99: 21-8, 2.82. If he can keep that up, this youngster should be a star for years to come in the GBA.
John Mateo, age 28, CL, McEachern: He's pretty much the game's premier closer right now. He hasn't had an ERA over 2.00 since 1994, and he's even won 23 games in relief over the past two seasons. A lot of teams would love to have this hard-throwing lefty in the 'pen.
Brian Denis, age 36, SP, Pope: He's still one of the best in the business, having won 55 games over the past three seasons, including an 18-6, 2.40 campaign in '99. He's got pinpoint control, and has been a Pope Greyhound since being drafted as a 20-year-old.
Jason Savell, age 31, SP, Pope: He's had a *VERY* impressive six-year run of his ERA never being above 2.50. Great control and a hard thrower.

Amos "Toro" Olivares is a 4.5-star player who was an All-Star last season as he put up a .306-27-91 season, and he looks like he'll improve some more. 2nd-year man Avelino Valera is an adequate backup.

Robert Linquist is a former Gold Glove performer who hasn't hit very well the last two seasons. He's in the second year of a three-year deal for over $9M per year. Travis Wilcox, on the back side of a nice career, will back him up. Not much hope for the rest of these guys.

There's really no one among this bunch who I want to put out there every day this year. MAYBE Andrews or Ladner will eventually earn a starting spot with their defensive play, but they look iffy at best. I need a FA here.

Olives has decent skills with the bat in his hands, but is weak afield. Sheehan should make for a very solid defensive replacement.

Karcher could start one day, but for now, the position belongs to Drumm o a FA.

Primmer has shown a little pop in his bat with 23 homers this past season, but I'm not sure he's a long-term solution at LF.

Leland Repass had 10 homers in 288 AB's in his GBA debut last season. This year, the position is his, and could be for quite some time.

I'm not particularly concerned about the bullpen yet, as I'm building a team. I'll get to the pen in a few years. I'm having some trouble cutting and pasting the starters in, so I'll just mention the ones worth mentioning..
SP Willard Gould, age 23, 5-star prospect--Gould was picked 1(8) in '97, and spent the last two seasons down in AA and AAA. He was 12-6 with a 2.82 ERA in AAA last year. His current ratings are 38 stuff, 55 control, 56 movement. He will probably begin the year in the GBA rotation due to our weak starting pitching.
SP Rafael Machado, age 32, 4-star veteran--He was acquired via trade last year. He's a very solid pitcher, but I don't like his $16M salary--more than 25% of my salary total. I'll try to trade him for prospects.
Unfortunately, that's all that is worth mentioning. There's a 2-star 30-year-old, and everyone else has 1 star. We've definitely got our work cut out for us.

TRADES
I get rid of SP Rafael Machado's big contract, dealing him to Brookstone for 23-year-old 3.5-star man SP Mon'Ichirou Rikyu, and 20-year-old 1.5-star man 2B Marcelo Fleita. Rikyu had worked his way into the Cougars' rotation by the end of last season, getting 12 starts, and he'll start off this season in our rotation. Fleita is a good-field/no-hit prospect right now. Here's hoping for a nice talent bump to his hitting.

FINANCIAL/FRONT OFFICE SITUATION
Fan Interest: 47 Team Market: Almost Non-existent

Fan Loyalty: Average

Cash on Hand: $20,000,000

Total Payroll: $38,528,743
Last Year Income:
$61,181,300
Available Money:
$35,652,557

With so much youth in the lineup, I don't want to dip into my cash reserve just yet. I'll limit myself to around $15M in spending on FA's this year.

DESIRES
You name it; Druid Hills needs it. Just kidding, but only by a little. We could stand to find solutions at each of the following positions: 1B, 2B, 3B, SS, LF, SP. 2B and SP are the highest priorities. At the other positions, I have at least a player or two available who won't embarrass us.

For this season only, I moved around the draft date to have some young FA studs in the pool. I figured it would be nice to have a little extra talent infusion at the beginning of the human run. This is for this year only. Henceforth, the draft will be left on June 1st.

SIGNINGS

SP Frank Warrick--This 28-year-old was 15-8 with a 3.37 ERA for Walton last year. His 5-year deal for $7.5M per year seems like a steal to me for the 3.5-star lefty. Warrick's signing increases our Fan Interest to 49.

2B Dalcio "Thunder" Meras--This 18-year-old was one of the best prospects created and put into free agency. He's got 78 range, and should be able to hit and hit with power. If he pans out, he's definitely the future at 2B. He'll start the season in single-A. He gets a five-year deal worth $1.2M per year. Having not check out well how doing this works, I hope I don't have to rush him. Because he has a big-league contract, the clock starts ticking on the 40-man roster on him right now.

SP Dudley Anderson--19-year-old. Same story as Meras. Going to have to make room on the 40-man for him now, and in MLB soon. The good news is that he's decently developed already. His ratings are 32/35/50 right now, and he'll start off in AA.

SP Travis Halloran--18-year-old 3-star guy. He gets a minor-league deal. He'll start off at AA Fernbank.

POST-FREE AGENCY THOUGHTS
I got some young help, and lowered the payroll. I can't complain.

I pick up a starting pitcher in the Rule 5 Draft. SP Wayne Manus is rated 60 in control, 78 in movement, but only 23 in stuff. He could be useful with a good defense behind him, and since I've got room on the big club's rotation, why not?

Great, just great. SP Mario Neyra broke his wrist in spring training, and is going to miss this season. I was considering letting SP Willard Gould start the year in AAA, but no longer. He'll be in the rotation now.

How did this happen? Did you manually enter that name? Or is this some new feature, manager hiring? If that is so, I will buy 6.5 right now.

Sorry, manually entered it. At the beginning of the career, I entered fictional affiliates and managers, generally the names of people I know that have some association with the particular school or community that their team in the GBA represents. Drew Waller used to lead YoungLife at Druid Hills High School. That's how that name got there.

Oops. I accidentally hit the switch on the power strip while I was typing up my ammy draft report, and lost everything. Short version is this: with the 1(2) pick, I grabbed 3B Adan Mann, a 21-year-old who looks like he'll be a stud. All of the later picks are iffy at best. Here are the Top 10 Organizations after the draft:

1. Wheeler
2. Shaw
3. Lassiter
4. Druid Hills
5. Marist
6. Tucker
7. Stephenson
8. Lakeside
9. Dunwoody
10. Columbus

Yeah, we're #4, but two other top 10 teams are in the Northlake Division, and Pius is #11.

Jason Peaslee has improved his plate disclipine!
Peasley is a right fielder with great range, a good arm, but not much of a bat. This set of increases only moves his talent to 32/27/53, so he's still got some improving to do before he's a big-league prospect.

Adan Mann has lost some power...
Quote:

Adan Mann seems to have lost some bat speed, resulting in less contact...
Ouch. This one hurts. Maybe I should have called him up to AAA. He's still a 3.5-star guy, but no longer a superstar-in-the-making.
Quote:
Travis Halloran seems to have improved his pure stuff!
Quote:

Travis Halloran's pitches have more bite now, the movement has improved!

Travis Halloran is hitting his spots better, his command improved!
Nice! Halloran is an 18-year who was signed to a minor league contract during free agency this year. He's now a 5-star prospect as a starting pitcher.

AAA NOTES:
I call up Dominic Lopez and Robert Chang, outfielders, for September. Chang is a great defensive guy at all three positions, and Lopez had a solid year at the plate and has solid ratings.

We've definitely got some pieces in place that we can build on. Another year to mature should help young pitchers like Willard Gould and Mon'Ichirou Rikyu to be able to step it up.

2001 POSITION REPORTS

CATCHER
Amos Olivares is an MVP candidate. He'll be FA-eligible after this season. I plan to lock him up to a long-term deal. Avelino Vera hit .303 backing him up last year. We have no decent prospects in the minors.
FIRST BASE
Robert Linquist is in the final year of his contract. He drove in 94 runs last season, but probably won't be re-signed. I may try to trade him before the season or in July. Travis Wilcox, at 37, may be getting too old to be a trusted backup. I have no decent prospects at this position—and we need one.

SECOND BASE
Douglas Ladner performed better than I expected him to in his first season playing every day. I knew he'd give me good defense, but I didn't expect him to et on base enough to lead the league in steals like he did. I've got a solid-looking prospect in single-A in Dalcio “Thunder” Meras, so I'll stick with Ladner for at least another season.

THIRD BASE
Adan “Clutch” Mann is rated 46/39/39, and hasn't played much above AA. I'd like to give him at least another half-season in the farm. My starter last season became a FA, and I don't really have another starting-quality player.

SHORTSTOP
I couldn't be more pleased at what I got from little-known first-time starter Adam Drumm last season. He batted .305, scored 94 runs, and played Gold Glove defense at shortstop. The switch-hitter will remain the starter. No prospects here.

LEFT FIELD
Daniel Primmer looks like he'll never hit for average, but he's driven in 254 runs over the past three seasons. He's signed through the end of next season. By then, if not sooner, David Gilley should be ready to take over in left.

CENTER FIELD
Urban Romero plays good defense out there, but is a liability at the plate. However, this is another position where I don't have a decent prospect.

RIGHT FIELD
Leland “Captain” Repass is a 5-star prospect who batted .316 with 16 homers in his first full season. This 24-year-old should only get better with time. The position should be his for years to come.

STARTING PITCHING
Current—Willard Gould, Frank Warrick, Bill Gerlach and Mon'Ichirou Rikyou, in some order, will be the front four. Several guys have a shot at being #5. Only Gerlach (32) is over 30.

Future—We have two strong prospects, 5-star man Travis Halloran, and 4-star prospect Dudley Anderson. Both spent all of last season in AA.

Unless we have a major injury or two, I don't expect to go after any new starting pitching any time in the near future, unless it is to grab an ace to shore up a title run.

RELIEF PITCHING
27-year-old Luis Rodriguez looks like he could be an effective closer for years to come. Behind him, though, I've only got one solid middle reliever—Charles Grieco, and one half-decent prospect—3-star 20-year-old Ezra Luna. I'm going to need to improve the bullpen before we can get serious about winning.

FINANCIAL/FRONT OFFICE SITUATION
Fan Interest: 55 (+8 from last year)

Team Market: Almost Nonexistent

Fan Loyalty: Fair

Cash on Hand: $20,000,000

Total Payroll: $47.8M
Last Year Income:
$55.1M
Available Money:
$29.2M

DESIRES
I could stand to find starters at 3B and CF, and also some relief pitching.

SIGNINGS

CF Pedro Pacheco (57/34/85)--This 30-year-old is all about speed and defense. He stole 67 bases last year for Lassiter, and has 499 steals in his career. He's also got 80 range, a 73 arm, and a career .346 OBP. He and Ladner gives us some SERIOUS speed at the top of the order now. He gets a 3-year deal worth $7.25M per year. His signing increases our fan interest to 57.

MR Antonio Lira (83/65/62)--This 29-year-old righty should help shore up the 'pen. He gets a 3-year deal worth $3.5M per year.

MR Alvaro Samons (37/60/49)--He's young (21) and gets a 3-year deal for $500K per year. This righty may start off this year in AAA.'

MR Andrew Strong (40/44/63)--24-year-old lefty gets a relatively cheap deal. Might be in AAA.

3B Thomas Sheahan (49/44/40)--34-year-old former Gold Glover who still plays great defense. He hasn't been a full-time starter since '98. I just want him to hold down 3B until Adan Mann is ready. After that, he should make a fine backup. He gets a 2-year deal for $350K per year.

BIG-DOLLAR SIGNINGS AROUND THE GBA

SP Miyajirou Tomomi (96/86/69) signs a $21.3M per year deal with Brookstone. He has a lifetime 2.61 ERA, and was 13-9 with a 2.20 for Lassiter last year.

CL Max Fuertes (60/78/94) signs a $14.9M per year deal with Tucker. Fuertes is a Smoltz-esque player. He has 151 career wins, nearly all as a starter, but took over as Dunwoody's closer midway through last season

SP Lino Naranjo (106/66/68), the defector from Cuba, signs for $23.1M per year with South Cobb.

LF Joey “Mad Bomber” Adkins (68/103/62) signs with Tucker for $14.4M per year. The Mad Bomber has hit 69 homers and driven in 126 runs over the last two seasons in North Springs.

POST-FREE AGENCY THOUGHTS
Pachecho looks like a very nice pickup, and Sheahan may be just what the doctor ordered—cheap and serviceable—to bridge the gap at 3B for Mann. Lira should help our bullpen now, and the other two could be useful soon. With Tucker signing two big-time players, I'm not sure we'll be able to contend in the division again this season.

With an improved bullpen, this looks like a team that has a shot at winning 85-90 games if we can stay away from injuries.

Julius Brown increased his bat control, resulting in more contact!

Julius Brown has improved his plate disclipine!
Brown is a prospect with outstanding range at SS. His talent bumps are enough to give him 2 stars as a prospect, and if he lives up to his 51 contact, he could get significant playing time one day, due to his outstanding defense.

AAA NOTES:
Adan Mann is hitting .287, and his numbers are up to 45/48/43. He'll probably get called up in June.

AA NOTES:
SP Dudley Anderson—3-0, 2.45, 39/39/60
SP Travis Halloran—1-2, 2.65, 25/64/41

A NOTES:
2B Dalcio Meras--.760 OPS, 27/22/74
CF Craig Drexler—1.387 OPS, 25/41/23—Only a 1.5-star prospect, but he's hitting the cover off of the ball, and gets promoted to AA,

TRADES
None.

CAREER BATTING LEADERS
[quote]

For anyone that is on the Trout watch , he is now up to 465 homeruns in his career. A former Rookie of the Year winner and six time All-Star selection, it's sad to see that the active homerun leader is on his last legs. Maybe "Crazylegs" Trout still has one good 40+ season in him to keep his remaining (3/6 popularity :o ) fans happy.

Edited: To remove quoted Career Batting Leaders table.
