Pflaggstettler pulls up, doesn't
want it to get by him
Base hit for Klein...
As Pflaggstettler fields it on one bounce

Ott raps a sizzling ground ball
It zips through the hole
Pflaggstettler is over to pick it up
Throws a strike to Terp
No chance to get Klein at third

Base hit to left for Hartnett
Klein scores
Ott is rounding second...
But he pulls up quickly as he sees
the sign from Casey Stingle
Ott will stay at second

GREAT CHANGE...
Swung on...
Traynor way out in front...
Hits a high pop up
Terp drifting under it
Infield Fly rule called
Traynor is automatically out
The ball is caught
The runners have to stay where they are
That is one down now for NL Pre
WWII in the top of the 9th
Benton Breeze takes a trip to the mound...
A few words are exchanged between
Bullock and Jace Kronside
Terp joins in the discussion
Probably going over the signs
Ott is out there at second
With a nice view of Bullock...
No sense taking any chances here

Alexander squares around
He bunts it . . .
A quick glance at the lead runner...
Fielded by D.Palmer
the throw to first...
Out
Alexander gets the job done.
That's out number two
All Stars' pitching coach, Sal Maglie,
is out to talk with Kronside

Frisch rips one right on the nose
This one is going to be trouble,
no doubt about it
Pflaggstettler is chasing it down...
Frisch is around second...
Persimmon finds the handle...
He fires it to Palmer...
Frisch slides as the ball arrives...
SAFE!
Man alive... 2 triples on
the afternoon for Frankie Frisch!

There's a line shot...
Carrying deep...
And over the head of Tucker
Frisch into score
Waner rounds first and heads for second
Tucker picks up the ball and fires it in
Waner holds at second
with a standup double

Looping fly to left
Stan Gunner charges the ball
It falls in front of him
NL Pre WWII adds to their lead
NL Pre WWII on top 7 to 1

Mize only gets a piece of it
Lifted up over the infield...
It should be an easy out...
And it will be Treacy making the play
That will do it for NL Pre WWII
Nip-and-tuck here at FOFC
Stadium this afternoon
FOFC coming in for their last shot
They need 6 to tie, and only 7 to win!
No problem...

Fastball, a beauty...
Steee Rike THREE!
So one up and one gone

Treacy pounds a grounder toward
Hornsby at second
Rogers moves in front of it...
Whoops... a bad bounce
But Hornsby stayed with it
Over to first and Treacy is retired
Nice play by the NL Pre
WWII second baseman
One more chance for FOFC this inning

There's a line drive in the gap by Terp
That looks like an easy two-bagger
Paul Waner races to the
ball and fires it in
Terp has himself a double

Base hit to left for Palmer
Dick Howser is waving the runner home...
The throw is coming home...
Terp scores!

It's a rainbow shot toward right
Ott reaches up
Makes the catch!
Didn't have to move an inch
And that will do it for FOFC
NL Pre WWII wins 7 to 2
Alexander gets credit for the win
Babson takes the loss
The hitting star for NL Pre WWII
was Frankie Frisch
He was 3 for 5
And that wraps things up
So long from FOFC.

FOFC Manager Update

"Let's see I'll need to get a book for the plane...maybe Dan Brown's 'Angels and Deamons' or Crieghton's Prey..." I say to outloud to myself as I continue to scribble down the items I want to take on our trip to Japan.

Maglie walks in and says, "Two in a row. Man, I can't believe we actually lost two in a row."

I give him a dirty look and he starts laughing. Then he asks, "How'd the interview go?"

"Not bad, I tried to down play the start, not sure how it will look when it is actually printed though."

"Any idea when that will be?" he asks.

"Not sure but I think Monday."

He nods and exits saying, "I gotta run. Need to get home and pack so I can make the plane on time."

GAME 26, Saturday, April 28th - Radio Broadcast

A hanging curve...
Tucker laces it hard just to
the right of Matsubara
He makes a stab at it...
Just misses it!
It's on into the outfield for a single
A wide turn by A. J....
but he'll stay at first
as the ball comes in

Nights hits a screamer at Makato Matsubara
Matsubara picks it up and fires to second
Out there...
And the throw to first
A tailor made double play
That's the second out of the inning

Changeup down low...
Pflaggstettler makes contact
and hits one out to center
Isao Harimoto is drifting over...
Now he's under it...
Easy out for Starffin
And that will do it for FOFC

Ichiro Suzuki swings
He really stings this one
It rifles past Blade into right...
Base hit for Suzuki...
Pflaggstettler is over to cut it off...
Now he tosses it in to the infield
Suzuki is on with a sharp single

Harimoto fouls off the bunt attempt
The count goes to 1 and 2, we'll have
to see if they keep the bunt play on
Harimoto squares to bunt
It's dribbled down the third base line
Palmer bare hands it...
Sidearm toss to first
Just in time!
Nice play
Credit Isao Harimoto with a sacrifice
One out
Katsuya Nomura is due up next

Nomura lines a wicked line drive
to the left of short
Nights stabs his glove out
He's got it in the webbing!
Jeff looks surprised to get that one
Suzuki hurries back to second
Two down
Hays asks for a new ball
He calls time and trots out to the mound
A conference going on between
Hays and Nielsen

There's a ball in front of the plate...
Hays gets in front to block it...
But it's off his mitt to his left
Suzuki is off for third base...
Hays picks up the ball and from his knees
Whips it to Palmer...
Suzuki slides...
SAFE!!
Score it a wild pitch on Rob Nielsen

Comebacker, right to Nielsen
Over to Potpie for the easy out
That retires the side
Japanese League threatens
but fails to score
Here in the bottom of the 1st

The pitch is just inside
and Potpie holds up
Nomura points down at the
first base umpire
He gives the "safe" sign
Jeeberoni trots down to first... ball four

Base hit to right for Hays
Dick Howser puts up the stop sign...
Potpie will stay at second

And Palmer will sit down...
strike three called
With one gone
FOFC will have Stan Gunner coming up
A dangerous hitter, no doubt about it

Grounded down the line
Nagashima grabs it
Over to second for one
Over to first
Not in time!
Score It: 5-4
Potpie takes third
The runner on first, Hays, is out
That's out number two
HOF Players' pitching coach, Hideki Irabu,
is out to talk with Starffin

A high fastball...
Blade swings late...
He hits a routine pop just left of Nomura
Katsuya is under it...
And takes it in for the easy out
Blade was looking for the breaking ball
That's all for FOFC
After 1 and a half innings in Japanese
League this evening,
Scoreless game

Swung on and hit sharply to short
Nights plays it on one bounce
Over to Potpie...
Out of there!
One away
While we wait for the next batter
Let's see what's happening in other games

He reaches down
Scoops it up and fires to first
Out!

Swung on, line drive, base hit to right
Pflaggstettler had to slide
to stop that one
There goes Nagashima to third
Kawakami holds at first
as the ball almost got by Pflaggstettler
Persimmon couldn't come up
throwing quickly enough

Drilled on the ground to second
Blade grabs it
Over to first
In time!
Score It: 4-3
That's all for the HOF Players
in the 2nd inning
No runs, one hit, no errors
and 2 men left on base...
We head to the 3rd...
We're scoreless

Curveball in the dirt
Swung on and missed...Strike three
Nomura fumbles it,
but quickly recovers to tag Nielsen
Japanese League gets the first
out of the inning

There's a liner over short...
Solidly stroked by Tucker
No chance for either Matsubara or Yamamoto
That one had base hit written all over it

There's a quail shot in front
of Ichiro Suzuki
He dives, but he traps it
Wait, the second base umpire
overrules the call
He calls the batter out
That's two away

Tucker takes his lead
Slider, down and in...
Breaking on the pitch
There goes Tucker for second
Nomura is up and firing down...
Kawakami applies the tag to
the sliding Tucker...
SAFE!
Kawakami couldn't find the
handle on the throw

He rips a grounder to short
Matsubara grabs it
Over to Oh
Got him!
Score It: 6-3
That does it for FOFC in
the top of the 3rd

He lays off the pitch
Ball four, he walks
Nice way to start an inning!

Suzuki extends his lead towards second
Curveball from Nielsen...
There he goes for second!
Hays displays his rocket arm...
Right on the money...
Suzuki is out by a mile

Curve ball...
Harimoto swings and misses by a mile
The bottom dropped out of that one!
A wicked pitch!
Two down

Low and outside
Ball four

Fastball, a dandy...
Steee Rike THREE!
And Oh is punched out
That's all for the HOF Players...
After 3 innings here at Nintendo
Field in Japanese League,
Scoreless game

Potpie takes the pitch...
That one is low for a ball... WAIT
The umpire says that one caught the knees
Potpie is out on strikes
One gone for FOFC

Sinking fastball...
Hays swings...
Raps a hard ground ball
right at Nagashima...
He snares it easily, throws to first...
Out by a step
Two down
Victor Starffin retires
the first two batters in order

That's hit deep to left field
This one is deep!
IT'S GOING, GOING,
GONE!!!
That is Deacon Palmer's 2nd
home run of the year.

It's a routine fly into left
Yamamoto ranges over and reaches up
This should do it...
And Yamamoto grabs it for the out
That wraps up the inning for FOFC
By the way, FOFC is 6 and 4
in their last ten games

Off speed pitch on the way...
And Yamamoto watches it go
by for the third strike
One away here in the bottom of the 4th
FOFC on top 1 to 0
While we have time, let's
check the scoreboard

Dead Ball Era is in front
of Caribbean 4 to 1
AL Post WWII is edging Negro
League I 3 to 2

for AL Post WWII
Late 20th with the lead
over Left Outs 3 to 0

WWII are all knotted at 1
NL Pre WWII is edging Negro

Two gone for Japanese League

Matsubara hits a fly ball to center
A. J. Tucker camps under it
He's got it
The HOF Players go down in order...
After 4 full innings,
it's 1-0 All Stars

Blade laces a hit into the outfield
Koji Yamamoto picks it up
Fires it to the infield
Blade holds with a single

Rob Nielsen shows bunt
And lays it down right to Saduharu Oh
Oh looks at second
But passes up a sure force play
He fires to first to retire Nielsen
But Blade moves up
FOFC was in luck that time...
Credit Rob Nielsen with a sacrifice
That's one away

Curveball, in and low
Tucker hits it to Oh at first
Takes it cleanly...
Races to the bag...
It's going to be close...
And...
Out is the call
That could have gone either way
Blade is now perched over at third
FOFC leads 1 to 0 with
two away this inning

Nights rips a hard drive
off a hanging curve
That will be in there for extra bases
Nights is around first, heading for two...
Harimoto is up with it and
fires it in quickly
Jeff pulls up sharply at second...
A stand-up double for the FOFC shortstop
Jeff also ups his hitting
streak to 8 games!
That is Nights' 1st hit today
Blade scores from third!

Looks like they want nothing
to do with Pflaggstettler
Persimmon is dangerous in
situations like this...
He's being put on to set up the force...

And a quick throw to first by Starffin
But Pflaggstettler is back easily...
Now to the plate... low, ball four...
That loads 'em up

Hays swings and lifts one toward center
Harimoto drifts over slowly...
He is under it now...
And makes the easy catch...
That's all she wrote for this inning

FOFC Manager Update

I'm sitting at the hotel restraunt with Dick and wonder 'What the Hell does this menu say?'

"Hey Dick, can you read any of this?"

"Nope. I'm just going to ask for eggs."

"Ok, me too." I reply.

"You going to get the paper?" Dick questions.

"They were out of the English ones, and pictures just aren't enough for me."

The waiter shows up and we attempt to order. He nods several times and leaves...

I have no idea what we are actually going to get to eat.

FOFC Manager Update

During warmups Bob Hazzle comes up to me and says, "Hey coach, Sugishita's throwing for the Japs tonight."

"Yeah, I figured he would."

"You going to make any changes cause we are facing a tough right hander?"

"I was considering it." I reply matter of factly.

"Um...well I don't want to tell you how to do your job, but...well, um..."

"Spill it Bob!" I demand.

"I want to work Gonzo in. He's been doing great off the bench and he's gotten his average way up. I think he deserves a start. I know Jeebs has been on fire, but we've got to keep Gonzo sharp, and well to be honest..."

"Shut up Bob. I'll start Gonzalez. I was considering it anyway, you just made my decissions a little easier."

"Thanks coach." he says as he slaps me on the back and heads out to the field, probably to tell David the good news.

Treacy scores!
Trailing runners advance.

Looks like they want nothing
to do with Palmer
He's too good in the clutch...
They'll put him on to set up the force

Liner drilled to third
Nagashima makes a great catch!
Score It: 5
So that wraps it up here
in the top of the 7th
Pflaggstettler leaves teammates
on every base
He is obviously upset with himself
We'll be back in just a minute...

It's time for the 7th inning stretch!

It's a high fly into center
Tucker ranges to his right
Reaches up, and takes it for the easy out
One out
Isao Harimoto is due up next

Harimoto goes after the change up...
Swung on and slammed to right-center...
Tucker is going back, back...
He hauls it in... nice catch

Ripped to third, but right
at Palmer...easy out
That is the third out for
Japanese League here
in the last of the seventh
The attendance has just been
announced at 46051

There's a ground ball up the middle
It gets by the pitcher
It's headed into center field
OH, Sachio Kinugasa gets to the ball...
But there won't be a throw
Base hit for Gonzalez

Hays fouls off the bunt attempt
The count goes to 1 and 2, we'll have
to see if they keep the bunt play on

There's a pop fly into short center
Isao Harimoto trying to get to it
He can't catch up to it!
Base hit for Hays
Gonzalez takes third

Grounded towards the bag
Oh flips to Sugishita covering
Score It: 3-1
One down, two to go...
Shigeru Sugishita has to bear down now

He rips a grounder to second
Taken by Kinugasa
Over to Oh
Got him!
Score It: 4-3
Two down
Nomura asks for a new ball
He calls time and trots out to the mound
A conference going on between
Nomura and Sugishita

Wait, Nomura calls time
He is looking to the dugout
Now he's signaling for an intentional pass
This will load them up
But Japanese League now has
a force at any base

Base hit to right for Tucker
Gonzalez scores
Dick Howser won't risk sending
the runner home...
Runners hold.

Liner drilled to second
Tough chance for Kinugasa
He grabs it for the out
Score It: 4
That'll do it in the top of the 8th
No runs, 2 hits, no errors
and 2 men left on base
FOFC leads 4 to 2
And now we'll pause for station
identification
This is your Strat-O-Matic
Broadcast System...

Matsubara lifts an easy fly to right
Pflaggstettler camps under it...
Waits... then snaps it into his glove
Poor ol' Makato...
Even his niece asked an
embarrassing question
before he left for the game today
He told her that he was
going to the ballpark
She said...
"What for?"
That's the respect you get when
you're batting .143!
With one down

Potpie yells something out to Knowles
Sammy nods his head

Fukumoto swings and misses
STRIKE THREE!
Knowles strikes out Yutaka Fukumoto
That's two away
Nights comes over from his shortstop
position to say a few words to Knowles
Ichiro Suzuki will be next up...

There's a high pop fly to the outfield
Gerald Gazelle moves to his left
He makes the catch
Wait, he bobbles it!
Gazelle grabs it with his
bare hand for the out
That's all for the HOF Players
No runs, no hits and no errors...
At the end of eight full innings...
FOFC on top 4 to 2

Tucker hits a three hopper
towards Makato Matsubara
Matsubara scoops it and fires
it to first for the out
So one up and one gone

Nights rips the curve to left-center...
Turning at the sound of the bat
Wakamatsu is racing back to the fence...
He reaches up for the drive...
It's over his head!
He plays the bounce off the fence
But he needn't hurry
Nights will lope into second with a double

Fouts swings and misses, strike three!
Dan chased a curve ball in the dirt
That's the second out of the inning

That one is a grass cutter towards short
Matsubara fronts it...
OOPS! It takes a big hop!
Makato manages to come up with it
on the heel of his glove
Rolls the ball into his free hand
On to first
It is off target...
Oh one hops it into his glove
Out!
Oh can't get out of the way
and Persimmon runs right into him
Nice play as that ball was thrown
on the rightfield side of the bag
Lucky the collision didn't hurt anyone
That retires the side
FOFC threatens but fails to score
Here in the top of the 9th

Belt high fastball, on the outside corner
Grounded to short
Nights ranging into the hole...
He backhands it...
Plants his right foot...
Fires to first
SAFE!...By a step

Nomura hits a three hopper
towards Barrett Blade
Blade scoops it and fires it to second...
Out
The throw to first...
Out at first, it's a double play
Two gone for Japanese League
Time is running out for them

Oh chases the change up
Hits a slow grounder right past Knowles
Nights snares it behind the bag...
Plants...
Throws to first...
Beats him by a step for the out!
And that will do it for Japanese League
FOFC wins 4 to 2
Hunter gets credit for the win
Knowles notches the save
Sugishita takes the loss
The hitting star for FOFC
was Jeff Nights
He was 3 for 5
And that wraps things up
So long from Japanese League.

FOFC Manager Update

A great "long road trip" ends with a big win. We were able to go across the world and continue to play well. Hazzle's hunch to play Gonzalez really worked out well, and the article about our fast start still hasn't hit the newstands yet (at least as far as I know - I am half a work away).

Thankfully we have a couple days off to get back on normal time before taking the field again.

FOFC DYNASTY UPDATE

That game ends the first month of the season. In an effort to be as fair as possible, I'm going to take some time to update the computer managers on all the other teams (I'll do this at the end of each month). Because I've attempted to run this as real time as possible, I'm going to actually take a week off and try and complete my updates on every team in that timeframe. Then on Tuesday, we'll pick up where we left off (unless someone objects).

This would also be a good time for suggestions - so if you have any feel free to chime in.

I'm hot coach. This pinch-hitting machine even got a homer in a rare start at first base.

FOFC Manager Update

On the flight back, one of the team managers, I think the kids name is Luke, he handed me a stack of faxed papers.

"Coach this just came in. Herb Garlic sent it to you, though you might want to read it on the plane. He says the actual magazine is on your desk."

"Herb Garlic?" I ask.

"Yeah, you know Herb in Marketing."

"Oh yeah, Herb Marketing. I forgot the idoit doesn't even know how to talk on a phone. I never knew the guys last name I just always refered to him as Herb Marketing because that's what he says when he calls people." I saly to myself. Then I turn to the kid and say, "Thanks."

He nods his reply and heads off.

I look at the fax and there is a huge almost unidentifiable picture with the headline:

FOFCs Showing the League What Great Really Is

I shake my head at the title and start reading...

FOFCs Showing the League What Great Really Is

It was early March and the Dynasty League Baseball’s Spring Training was about to start. There was a buzz around the league. People were actually going to see Babe Ruth in all his glory, Cobb and his anger, Matthewson and his class, and Joe Jackson and his bare feet (he doesn’t really play without shoes by the way). There was even a considerable amount of attention paid to the stars of other leagues. Finally the Negro League Superstars would get to play against the “whites” in league games. Caribbean and Japanese all-stars would also get a chance to make a name for themselves. Imagine, Gibson, Oh, Laneris all playing in the same league. Truly amazing. For all the buzz though, there was 1 team that was a huge question mark – the FOFC All Stars.

The FOFC All-Stars are made up of players with names like Potpie, Nights, Babson…hardly household names, especially when compared to the names mentioned above. However the team had a plan when they located the players they would use.

“First off we wanted to get players that would not be intimidated by the competition,” says team GM George Boss. “It would be pretty easy for guys to be start struck in this league. We wanted gamers that can do it all and aren’t afraid to compete on the highest level.”

Team manager Benton Breeze said, “I had very little input in the team’s makeup. I made suggestions, requests for playing style things of that nature, but I didn’t know who would be on the team until they showed up at training camp or called to tell me they were coming.”

As it turns out the selection criteria appears to have been good. “We have a bunch of good guys and good attitudes, and that goes a long way to having a successful season,” Breeze explains. “These guys are all used to starting and playing every game, but on this team in this league, there are going to be times when you have to sit. I’ve had some subtle hints from players requesting time, but every time I tell a player I’m sorry you aren’t playing more they respond ‘just keep winning and I’ll be happy’”.

And winning they are. FOFC has the best record in the league by a bunch. They are winning with pitching with hitting with relief pitching, with managing with the trainer, every way imaginable.

“We’ve been quite lucky so far, “ Breeze admits. “Have you seen the names of the players that have been on the DL? We’ve so far avoiding the injury bug and that has helped tremendously. We’ve also benefited from playing some teams that were far from full strength.”

They are extremely happy with the way the team is playing, and why wouldn’t they be, they are leading the league in ERA, and they are in the top half for batting average and home runs. Plus most importantly, they win the close games.

“Winning the close ones means we are doing the fundamentals correctly,” says GM Boss. “It also means we have guys who aren’t intimidated.”

Could there be other reasons why the FOFC team has flourished? Benton thinks so.

“In my opinion, one of the big reasons we are doing well is the way the team is constructed, and I don’t mean the character I mean the breakdown of players, pitchers and positions. Having 10 pitchers in the pen has been a huge advantage. Most of these teams only have 8 pitchers, and that’s just not enough. I know we’ve been involved in games where the other manager probably wants to pull the starter, but he doesn’t have anyone that he can turn too. It’s so easy to stress a bull pen when you only have 3 and half non-starters. If you use 2 in a game the next day you have 1 guy you can turn to who isn’t tired. We don’t have that problem. I have 5 and half quality pitchers in my pen. Rodney, Fozborg, the Knowles brothers, and Kronside. I guarantee you that any other team in this league would beg to have any of these guys on their roster.”

Benton also thinks like a real estate agent….location, location, location.

“I don’t know who made this schedule, and I certainly appreciate having almost the entire first month at home, but the unbalanced nature of this thing is going to come back around. We will get 77 at home and 77 on the road, and we’ve had about 90% of our current games on our home field – that means we have quite a few road game left. That means playing in the band boxes of the AL- Pre and Post teams the gigantic pitching friendly parks for the Old Timers, the Dead Ballers and the Turn of the Centuries. Those parks are big advantages for those teams and we’ll have to find ways to win there.”

Benton also warns that the expectations for this team need to stay at a reasonable level.

“There is a lot of baseball still to be played and I hardly think we are going to end the season with only 30 losses. But this is fun right now and I’m going to enjoy it while I can.”

It’s fun for the fans and baseball lovers in general to see these underdogs continue to do well. It will be interesting to see how long the All Stars can keep this up and if they can build a big enough cushion early to allow them to hold on for the division title.

FOFC - Manager Update

Our plane finally arrived at the airport late Tuesday night. Thank God we didn't have a game that night. I got home, ate a fast food hamburger I had picked up on the way and went to sleep.

I woke up slightly when the kids got up, thankfully, the wife had set the TV up to be on cartoons and set out cereal so they could feed themselves. I woke up again when my wife got up, but I looked at the clock and it said 8:45. With a little mental calcuations I realize that is actually 8:00 (don't ask). I decide that we dont' have a game tonight either so I'm going to sleep in and read the paper when I get up...it's not going anywhere.

FOFC Dynasty Update

Sorry guys...when I said I'd start up again on Tuesday, I wasn't thinking about the holiday. I had too much going on (hosting dinners a couple times and going across town for a day) to get any play or updates done. I believe I left off on Wednesday - so I'll start posting again tomorrow.

Well my assumption that the paper wasn't going any where was a bad one. When I finally roll out of bed, I end up looking all over the house for the paper. I look in the kitchen, den, bathroom, even outside where the recycle bin is, thinking my wife had put it there feeling that I wouldn't be interested in it this late in the day. I finally find it in my car. Apparently the wife had taken the car to get lunch and took the paper with her because there were coupons in the paper. Why she took the whole think, I'll never know, but regardless - I finally had my paper to read.

With another off day, I sleep in again. I rub the sleep from my eyes and shuffle off to find the paper. I want to see if anyone has been able to close the gap on us yet.

Early Wynn(1-5) got credit for the victory, pitching 2 innings and allowing no runs. Hideo Nomo(1-3) was charged with the loss in relief. He struggled with his control issuing 6 walks in 2 innings. I finish reading the paper, get up to get another cup of coffee when my wife walks in from picking up the twins from pre-school.

"Wow, what are you still doing here, your are going to be late to the park?" She says as she takes off Bailey's jacket.

"Late for the park what are you talking about?"

"Today's Thursday."

"Right"

"Well, let's see if I can explain this simply so you can understand," she says in a tone that is dripping sarcasim. "You have a game tonight."

"No I don't." I argue.

"Um...honey come here." and she walks over to the paper with me in tow.

"You see what is says here?" she asks pointing to the part that says...TODAY'S SCHEDULE AND PROBABLE STARTERS"

I nod meekly.

Then she slides her fingers down about an inch to where it says...NLT-Wickwar(1-5, 8.23) at FAS-Babson(4-1, 2.20)

"Oh Sh..."

"Shhhh" she interrupts preventing me from cursing in front of my children.

I run upstairs get dress and race out of the house.

ball and fires it in
Allen has himself a double

Wright slaps a routine grounder to Nights
Jeff picks it up...
Looks Allen back to second
Sidearms a throw to Potpie
Wright is out
FOFC gets the first out of the inning

A line drive...

As Humphrey Bogart once said
A hotdog at the ballpark is better than
steak at the Ritz

Swung on, liner towards second...

It's time for the 7th inning stretch!

There's a high pop fly to the outfield
Pete Hill moves to his left
He makes the catch
Wait, he bobbles it!
Hill grabs it with his bare
hand for the out
One down for FOFC
Jeeberoni Potpie is still
in the on-deck circle
and Deacon Palmer is looking
for a bat in the dugout

Potpie swings and misses
STRIKE THREE!
Manning strikes out Jeeberoni Potpie
Two up, two down

Swung on and chopped down
the third base line
Allen stabs at it
He's got it!
Over to first...
GOT HIM!
What a nice play by Newt Allen
That is the third out for FOFC here
in the last of the seventh
The attendance has just been
announced at 32759

A hanging curve...
Bankhead laces it hard just
to the right of Palmer
He makes a stab at it...
Just misses it!
It's on into the outfield for a single
A wide turn by Sam...
but he'll stay at first
as the ball comes in

Bankhead watches Babson move...
He's moving away from the bag
Bankhead has to hold tight to the bag

There's a shot off the bat of Pete Hill
But it's right at Potpie
who makes the catch
Hill throws his bat in disgust
One away for Negro League II
here in the top of the 8th

Cito Gaston will send up a pinch hitter
Buck O'Neil steps out of the dugout!
He will be up there against Babson

O'Neil gets under this one
It's popped high in the air to short
Nights is waving everybody off
O'Neil is retired
That's the second out of the inning
Time to check the scoreboard

AL Pre WWII clipping Caribbean 5 to 1
Dimaggio has hit his 1st homerun
for AL Pre WWII
NL Post WWII slipping by
Negro League I 6 to 4
Musial has hit his 4th homerun
for NL Post WWII
Old Timers and AL Post WWII
are deadlocked at 4
Williams has hit his 6th homerun
for AL Post WWII
Late 20th is on top of
Dead Ball Era 5 to 3
Sutter battling Brown
Left Outs and NL Pre WWII
are deadlocked at 3
Traynor has hit his 5th homerun
for NL Pre WWII
Japanese League and Turn of Century
are all knotted at 1
Kaneda battling Mathewson
And here in FOFC FOFC ahead 4 to 2

Cito Gaston will send up a pinch
hitter for Newt Allen
Yes, Luke Easter steps out of the dugout
He will be up there against Babson

It's a rainbow shot toward right
Pflaggstettler reaches up
Makes the catch!
Didn't have to move an inch
Three down for Negro League II
Now the All Stars will be coming up
for what they hope will be their
last at bat of the afternoon
They lead by 2, 4-2
Dizzy Dismukes will be coming on
to pitch for Negro League II
Dizzy has appeared in 5 games this season
with a record of 1-1
In 4 innings, he has an 4.15 ERA
Max Manning has finished his work
here this afternoon
Negro League II's defensive changes are...
Wilson will bat 6th and play 3B
Easter will bat 1st and play 1B

Lined to first
Base hit!
Easter gets it back in
Bullock takes the big turn
Now they throw behind him,
And he's nailed!!
Careless play by Bullock

Swung on and chopped down
the third base line
Wilson stabs at it
He's got it!
Over to first...
GOT HIM!
What a nice play by Jud Wilson
Two away now for FOFC
They're ahead by 2
The All Stars have 9 hits on the afternoon

It hits Blade
He just stands there
Now he says a few words to Dismukes
Dizzy answers something back
The umpire steps in between
And motions Blade to first

Drilled on the ground to second
Bankhead grabs it
Over to first
In time!
Score It: 4-3
So it is nothing across for the All
Stars in the bottom of the 8th
After 8 innings
FOFC has 4 runs, 9 hits and no errors
While Negro League II has 2 runs,
6 hits and no errors

There's a liner over short...
Solidly stroked by Wright
No chance for either Nights or Gazelle
That one had base hit written all over it

Brown drives the ball to
center for extra bases
Willie Randolph plays it safe
and stops him at third...
Double for Brown

Wait, Bullock calls time
He is looking to the dugout
Now he's signaling for an intentional pass
This will load them up
But FOFC now has a force at any base

John Beckwith swings
It's a rope
Man Alive!!!...
Nights swipes at it and robs
Beckwith of a sure base hit
Luck or skill...
A little bit of both on that one,
I would say...
One away here...
Knowles needs two more to
get out of this inning

Wilson takes the pitch...
That one is low for a ball... WAIT
The umpire says that one caught the knees
Out on strikes
With two gone, FOFC on top 4
to 2 in the top of the 9th

Popped up into shallow right
Tough chance for Pflaggstettler
HE DIVES
HE'S GOT IT!
TREMENDOUS DIVING CATCH!
Knowles owes Pflaggstettler a dinner!
Score It: 9
And that will do it for Negro League II
FOFC wins 4 to 2
Babson gets credit for the win
Knowles notches the save
Mathis takes the loss
The hitting star for FOFC
was A. J. Tucker
He was 2 for 4
And that wraps things up
So long from FOFC.

FOFC Manager Update

I roll out of bed bleary eyed this morning. I had a hard time getting to sleep - too much adrenalin running through my veins. I just kept picturing in my mind the phenomenal defensive plays that saved the game for us.

I go down stairs and rather than look for the paper to read the accounts of last night I turn on the television and flip to Sportscenter. They are still talking about the NFL draft from a few weeks ago – so I go get coffee. I return and suffer through ridiculous catch phrases about tennis players, golfers and basketball shots, even some baseball but nothing on my team.

The show ends then restarts (as it seems to do all morning long). There are inane little comments about the nights events that I pay little attention to, however I do see Pflaggstettler diving and I hear something to the affect of “…I’ll take that – thank you very much.”

The show pans in on the two talking heads…James Self and Gary Grime. They banter back and forth for a few minutes then Gary says..

“..but we start tonight in Baseball and we’ll start with the hottest team – the Faahfikers (which I think is the FOFCer pronounced, but, who knows). The FOFCer have been off for a couple of days following there return flight from Japan, would that cool them off any…”

James jumps in, “Hardly!”

“Thank you…”

“Welcome.”

“In the bottom of the first with Tucker on, Benton calls a hit and run and Nights – BAM (highlight shows Nights smashing the ball in the gap) – that one is going for extra bases and Tucker scores.”

“In the second inning with 2 on and 2 out Tucker delivers to give the FOFCers a 2 to 0 lead. (highlight shows Tuckers hit).

“The All Stars score again in the third and fifth to open up a 4 to nothing lead. Then in the top of the seventh – Wright gets on base then Babson goes to work, over powering Brown and Santop (highlights show both go down swinging). Then Beckwith steps in…audio cuts to the play by play guy..

.“…here is the pitch…Swung on and hit to left...
It's down the line... and deep
Gazelle runs over toward the foul pole
Gerald won't get this one...
Fair or foul???...
FAIRBALL is the signal!
Say "so long" to the shutout!
Negro League II is on the board...
It's 4-2, FOFC.

Gary continues, “Now we cut to the ninth inning. Sammy Knowles is in to close the door only a funny thing happened on the way to the win

“Wright singles over the shortstops head. Brown drives the ball for extra bases and the Twos have the tying run in scoring position with no outs. Benton elects to walk Santop hoping to set up the double play. Beckwith, who has both the Two’s RBI steps in….

…cut to play by play announcer “John Beckwith swings
It's a rope
Man Alive!!!...
Nights swipes at it and robs
Beckwith of a sure base hit
Luck or skill...
A little bit of both on that one,
I would say...”

“I would say too…” says Gary.

“Uh huh.” Grunts James.

“With Sammy fooling no one and a dangerous lefty due up in Jud Wilson, Breeze Knowles what to do…

“ha ha ha,” James laughs and I roll my eyes.

“Bo comes in and watch this…strike or not? The umpire says yes it on the knees and Wilson sits down. What a close call. If it goes the other way a sac fly would have tied it…as it stands now, bases are loaded with two outs and Bankhead stepping in.

…cut to the play by play announcer ”Popped up into shallow right, Persimmon has a long way to go on this one…(pause)
Tough chance - HE DIVES..AND (pause)
HE'S GOT IT!
TREMENDOUS DIVING CATCH!
Knowles owes Pflaggstettler a dinner!”

“Yes sir a nice juicy steak. I think the Knowles brothers can split the cost since the players on base were Sammys, but it was Bo that threw the pitch. That win makes the FOFCers 24 and 5 and continues their amazing start.”

James takes over, “In other baseball action last night…”

I ignore the rest and wait for the replay next hour.

Time for a break, just in
time, by the way as
I've just been handed a ballpark hotdog
As Humphrey Bogart once said
A hotdog at the ballpark is better than
steak at the Ritz

And Poles will sit down...

That's two quick outs for Rob Nielsen
Negro League II will need

They are running out of time

Ball four is the call
Nielsen can't believe the call
And barks at the home plate umpire
The ump points out at Nielsen
Wright takes first base

Swung on...and it's in the
air to the left side
Backing just a bit is Gunner
And he pulls it in
That ends the inning
After 6 and a half innings,

The batter checks his swing
Here's the appeal
Hays swung, that's strike three

Smashed to the mound
Manning comes up with it
Over to Wilson
Got him!

And Blade watches it go by
for the third strike
That is the third out for FOFC here
in the last of the seventh
The attendance has just been
announced at 46132

Nielsen picks it up and fires to first
The throw pulls Potpie off the bag
Potpie swipes with the glove

Brown is out!
Nice play by Potpie
FOFC gets the first out
here late in this contest

Santop hits a fly ball to left
Stan Gunner camps under it
He's got it

There's a fly ball to Stan Gunner

The ball is low and outside
Did he go around?
The umpire says no
Ball four
For Pflaggstettler, that's 2 walks today

Base hit to left for Potpie
Dick Howser is waving the runner home...
The throw is cut off...
And that allows the run to score

Cito Gaston is visiting the mound...
He's going to leave Manning in the game
Looped to second
Bankhead will handle it
He's got it
Score It: 4
That's all for the All Stars...
After 8 innings here at
FOFC Stadium in FOFC,
FOFC ahead 5 to 0

What a pitch... strike three
Nielsen put that one on the
black, a perfect pitch

hitter for Max Manning
Yes, Dick Lundy steps out of the dugout
He will be up there against Nielsen

Fastball, swung on and missed
Take a seat Mr. Lundy!
That's the second out here in the
ninth for Negro League II
One more to go for Rob Nielsen
as he flirts with history
The fans are on the edge of their seats
Rob takes a deep breath as he waits
for Spotswood Poles to step in

Swung on and missed by Poles,
he's down on strikes
That is 2 on the day for Poles
And that will do it for Negro League II
FOFC wins 5 to 0
Nielsen gets credit for the win
His NO-HITTER will become
part of baseball lore!
Wickware takes the loss
The hitting star for FOFC
was Stan Gunner
He was 1 for 4 with a homerun
He also knocked in 3 runs
And that wraps things up
So long from FOFC.

FOFC - Manager Update

From my seat in the dug out I watch the guys pile on Nielsen. I'd like to do that too, honestly, but I'm a little old for that. With a huge smile on my face I say, "Looks like I have a reason to watch Sportscenter again tonight."
