I'm sorry he never got a chance to speak in Canton. He and Kenny Anderson are the two players I think should have been absolute locks for the Hall and have never been inducted.

I'd love to hear your thoughts on this. I'm too young to have seen him play. His numbers are nothing spectacular. I always thought that he was more hype because he was a big personality that played for the Raiders.

But you've forgotten more about football than I've ever known, so I'd love to hear his HOF case.

If only some savvy ESPN reporter could get a hold of his medical charts...

Damn. The Snake was one of my dad's favorite players (was an Eagles fan, but liked the Raiders of the 70s too).

I'm with Solecismic on this. Stabler deserves to be in the Hall of Fame. Perhaps his stats are amazing compared to modern QBs, but they are quite impressive considering his prime was partly in the dead ball era. He has a Super Bowl title. Better ratings than Namath or Bradshaw. He's 22nd all time in game winning drives and his 59% completion percentage number one among QBs whose careers started before 1977 (end of the dead ball era).

Damn. One of the true characters of the game. Hope God doesn't tell him "Hey, you've had luck keepin the Tooz on a leash down on earth.. mind keeping him from wreckin Heaven?"

(read his book.. one of the funniest stories was when he got dismissed from Alabama's football team after incurring the wrath of Bear Bryant. He figured "Aw, it don't mean nothin' cuz it's the offseason. I'll lay low and just show up for the first day of practice and all will be forgiven". That plan changed when he got a telegram from another famous Alabama QB, Joe Namath. It was simple "HE MEANS IT".)

I wrote about it when creating my VORQ measurement for quarterbacks. When adjusting for era, his numbers are spectacular. And he has the ring.

I should update that study and repost it when I get a chance, since so much of the Frontier was lost.
