Taking over the GWAL- An FBCB 2010 dynasty

Mike Schaplowsky has accepted the position of basketball coordinator of the Greater Wichita Athletic League. This will be the GWAL's second season in the NCAA, with a conference prestige of 2. As basketball coordinator, Schaplowsky is basically the AD for all 9 schools in the GWAL, and he will decide when to hire and fire coaches.

Some house rules for this, I will be randomizing team prestige for all the teams. I will fast sim 1 season and pick it up at this point. I will set all the coaches in the GWAL to human control. Obviously with only 1 season under my belt, I don't plan on firing any coaches first year. Coaches will be allowed to leave and take a job at a higher school, which I will try to control as well. Conference prestige movement is on, so hopefully we can get the GWAL up to a prestige of at least 4. That is the goal. The more teams playing postseason ball, the better.

One note that I forgot to make, when I have a position that needs filled, I will look to hire former head coaches that are currently without a job, and assistant coaches from other schools. I will not hire a head coach from another school.

So I take over as conference AD after the first season and evaluate the coaches. Nobody is getting fired this season. One other change I've made to the conference.. for whatever reason, last year the conference did not have a postseason tournament. I have corrected that. Also, I will be using all 4 tournaments: NCAA (with 68 teams), NIT (I'm bumping it up to 40 teams), CBI, and CIT. Now let's take a look at the GWAL coaches.

1. Bishop Carroll- Shane Dreiling- His ratings are 8 for recruiting, 100 for scouting, 50 for offense, and 82 for defense. He was 24-5 last year and took the team to an NCAA berth, where they lost in the first round.

2. Kapaun Mount Carmel- Ryan Hujing- Ryan has ratings of 99, 35, 1, and 65. It was a dismal season for Kapaun, who finished 3-26, good for last in the conference.

3. Wichita East- James Cole- James has ratings of 51, 9, 75, and 65. He's got a tough job as East's prestige was 0 last season. With a 4-25 record, James managed to get East's prestige to 4.

4. Wichita Heights- Bryan Chadwick- His ratings are 27, 64, 94, and 15. Bryan had a 13-16 record in his first season, with no postseason.

5. Wichita North- Rudy Arellano- His ratings are 43, 20, 83, and 54. North was 9-20 last season, with no postseason obviously.

6. Wichita Northwest- Mitch Linn- His ratings are 15, 6, 79, 100. Northwest was 13-16 last season, but had a winning conference record. No postseason.

7. Wichita South- Eddie Tate- Eddie has ratings of 28, 100, 5, and 67. South had a tough year with a 10-19 record and no postseason.

8. Wichita Southeast- Marty Frankamp- Marty has ratings of 53, 29, 100, and 78. I don't expect Marty to be in the GWAL for very long. His record at Southeast last year was 28-9, 15-1 in conference, and Southeast won the CBI championship.

9. Wichita West- Reggie Taylor- Reggie has ratings of 71, 61, 24, and 44. West was 11-19 last year and will be looking to improve.

I'm pleased that all schools had a prestige boost, except for Southeast. For some reason, Southeast dropped 2 point in prestige. Figure that one out. Every coach gets a free pass next season, so I don't expect to have to make any moves, unless either Marty or Shane decide to leave.

So I just got a list of the recruiting rankings for the GWAL this past season, and all I can say is wow.

Code:
2010 Recruiting Rankings # Team Conference Best Player Rtg 5* 4* 3* 2* 1* -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 114. Bishop Carroll GWAL SG Edward Wright **** 0 1 0 0 0 136. Kapaun Mt. Carmel GWAL SG Lemuel Mitchell *** 0 0 1 2 1 171. Wichita Northwest GWAL C Ronnie Johns *** 0 0 1 1 2 281. Wichita Heights GWAL SG Isaac Pisano ** 0 0 0 1 3 287. Wichita South GWAL PG Odalis Munoz ** 0 0 0 1 3 295. Wichita Southeast GWAL PG Brian Flaherty ** 0 0 0 3 0 297. Wichita North GWAL SG Rene Ward ** 0 0 0 1 3 315. Wichita East GWAL PG Arthur Wetmore ** 0 0 0 1 2 320. Wichita West GWAL SG Robbie Benavides * 0 0 0 0 4

Other than Bishop Carroll, Kapaun, and Northwest, the rest of the GWAL was crap. Carroll had a nice pick-up, and Ryan Hujing over at Kapaun did a fair job. I expect better out of him though, especially with a recruiting rating of 99. Granted, I know that a lot of it is put on the assistant coaches as well.

Not that I probably should do this, being the conference AD, but I'm going to make my predictions for how my 9 teams will finish in league play this season. Actually, I will do it for every season as long as I'm here. Keeping in mind I want all my teams to succeed, here are my predictions for the 2011-2012 season.

1. Wichita Southeast
2. Bishop Carroll
3. Wichita Northwest
4. Wichita Heights
5. Wichita North
6. Wichita West
7. Kapaun Mt. Carmel
8. Wichita South
9. Wichita East

Well I've just watched what has been a dismal first 2 months of the season. It's easy to see why this is a prestige 2 conference, after this season, it could be prestige 1. I'm starting to think we should have stayed in the NAIA, where are teams were actually dominant. Anyhow, here's a look at the standings through December.

Code:
2011 Greater Wichita Athletic League Standings TEAM CW CL Pct W L Pct RPI Prestige -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Bishop Carroll Eagles 2 0 1.000 8 5 .615 218 64 Wichita West Pioneers 1 0 1.000 6 7 .462 194 33 Wichita Heights Falcons 2 0 1.000 4 8 .333 343 31 Wichita South Titans 2 0 1.000 3 10 .231 209 32 Wichita North Redskins 1 1 .500 7 5 .583 322 28 Wichita Southeast Buffaloes 0 2 .000 7 5 .583 119 70 Wichita Northwest Grizzlies 0 1 .000 5 7 .417 166 29 Wichita East Blue Aces 0 2 .000 4 10 .286 240 4 Kapaun Mt. Carmel Crusaders 0 2 .000 1 11 .083 238 20

As you can see, things aren't looking good. Only 3 teams with winning records, and then Southeast, who I picked to win the conference, has already lost the first 2 conference games. Ryan Hujing is absolutely killing me at Kapaun. He's won 1 game this year, despite playing what I feel was a fairly easy non-conference schedule. He's on the hotseat already.

We're heading into March now, and while I'm not totally satisfied with things, I am happy that none of my 9 schools have an RPI in the 300's. Here are the standings after February.

Code:
2011 Greater Wichita Athletic League Standings TEAM CW CL Pct W L Pct RPI Prestige -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Wichita Southeast Buffaloes 11 5 .688 21 8 .724 135 70 Bishop Carroll Eagles 11 5 .688 19 10 .655 157 64 Wichita South Titans 9 7 .563 11 18 .379 209 32 Wichita Northwest Grizzlies 8 8 .500 15 14 .517 191 29 Wichita North Redskins 7 9 .438 13 16 .448 251 28 Wichita Heights Falcons 7 9 .438 10 19 .345 271 31 Wichita West Pioneers 7 9 .438 13 16 .448 223 33 Wichita East Blue Aces 6 10 .375 11 18 .379 200 4 Kapaun Mt. Carmel Crusaders 6 10 .375 8 21 .276 245 20

As expected, Bishop Carroll and Southeast are at the top. After that, its a jumbled mess. Parody in the middle is not necessarily a good thing, especially when you have only 3 teams of a 9 team conference that have a winning record, and I can expect to lose at least 2 of those coaches after the season. Ryan Hujing is making a last ditch effort to keep his job, and how about the job that James Cole has done over at Wichita East. This was one of the worst teams in the NAIA, coming into the NCAA with a prestige of 0. Yet, he raised the prestige by 4 in one season, and already has 11 wins this year. I think it's safe to say his job is safe.

GWAL Tournament First Round

(9) Kapaun hammers (8) Wichita East 91-56.

Wow, to say that Kapaun is playing with a chip on their shoulder is an understatement right now. East had a major collapse, at one point they had a .500 record.

GWAL Quarterfinals

(1) Wichita Southeast beats (9) Kapaun 85-61
(4) Wichita Northwest over (5) Wichita North 63-54
(3) Wichita South over (6) Wichita Heights 68-47
(2) Bishop Carroll over (7) Wichita West 68-63

Good to see West take Bishop Carroll to the limits. Looking like a Southeast-Carroll final again.

GWAL Championship

(2) Bishop Carroll beats (1) Wichita Southeast 45-39

Definitely not the greatest game in the world, but good to see Bishop Carroll get the win. They got the automatic bid into the NCAA tournament. Being a prestige 2 conference, I don't know if Southeast will get an automatic bid, but with the NIT expanding back to 40 teams, I can easily see them in the NIT. Wichita Northwest was the only other team in the GWAL with a winning record. I'm hoping they can sneak into the CBI or CIT.

Bishop Carroll gets the #15 seed in the Midwest Region, drawing #2 seed Youngstown St. Yes I said Youngstown St., one of the many surprises of doing a random prestige for this dynasty.

Wichita Southeast does make it to the NIT tournament, but had the NCAA not expanded it to 40 teams, they wouldn't have. Southeast is the #10 seed in the South region and will take on (7) Green Bay in the first round, with the winner taking on (2) Marquette in the Quarterfinals.

Unfortunately, no postseason for Wichita Northwest, which means that the GWAL only gets 2 teams in postseason again this year. That has got to change.

In the NIT, Wichita Southeast got hammered by Green Bay, 79-57.

As for the NCAA, Bishop Carroll might as well not bothered showing up, as they lost 92-49, making it a short, painful postseason for the GWAL.

Recruiting in the GWAL this season was bad. Although we had 1 team (Bishop Carroll) in the top 100 and another team (Wichita East) that was very close to the top 100, we also had 5 teams that were 300 or lower, and another team at 296.

Code:
2011 Recruiting Rankings # Team Conference Best Player Rtg 5* 4* 3* 2* 1* -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 75. Wichita North GWAL SG Boris Darling * 0 0 0 0 3 353. Wichita Northwest GWAL C Brock Goldman * 0 0 0 0 2

I'm most pleased with Wichita South and Wichita East. I expected a good recruiting class at Bishop Carroll. Kapaun dissapointed me the most, again.

Just to make it intersting, I will be adding an assistant coach to the mix. His name will be Shannon Elliott, and I will let the AI decide where he ends up. If he ends up as a head coach, that's ok too. I will be working on coaching evaluations and moves here in the next couple hours.

2012 Coach Evaluation

Bishop Carroll- Shane Dreiling - While I'm a little dissapointed that Bishop Carroll finished with twice as many losses as they head 2 seasons ago, I can't deny the fact that Shane is the most consistent coach in the conference, winning the GWAL in its first 2 years of NCAA existance. If he stays, he's got a job, but I fully expect him to head to greener pastures.

Kapaun Mt. Carmel- Ryan Hujing -- Ryan did impress me with a late season run, but he only won 12 games in his 2 years here, and hasn't done a thing recruiting wise. For a guy that has a recruiting rating of 99, he sure hasn't lived up to it. It's time for him to try his luck elsewhere.

Wichita East- James Cole -- Many people would look at East's 15-44 record over 2 NCAA seasons and ask why this guy still has a job. What they don't realize is that East had a prestige of 0 coming into the NCAA. It's now 7. James is doing something right, and he will continue to coach at East. That said, he can't let up and has to keep showing signs of improvement.

Wichita Heights- Bryan Chadwick -- Bryan has done nothing to hurt his cause at Heights, but he is one of several coaches that needs to do better in the future. I'm willing to give him the benefit of the doubt for now and hope that his 10 win season last year will turn into 15 this season.

Wichita North- Rudy Arellano -- Rudy improved Norths win total by 4 this season, and won 2 more conference games. Any coach that can show improvement gets a free pass for now.

Wichita Northwest- Mitch Linn -- Northwest was 1 of only 3 schools that had a winning season last season, that enough is reason to keep him in the GWAL.

Wichita South- Eddie Tate -- Eddie also improved South this year, although not by much. But, he has dropped Souths prestige by 2 points, and there are reports that he was caught sleeping with a student at the school. Maybe I'd give him one more year if it was just the prestige drop, but combine that with the allegations, and he's got to go.

Wichita Southeast- Marty Frankamp -- Marty is another coach that has had great success here, unfortunately he had a drop off this season, and didn't do anything recruiting wise to help his cause. That being said, it's hard to get rid of a coach that has a 51-19 record in a conference with a prestige of 2. Although I do think he will be receiving some offers this year.

Wichita West- Reggie Taylor -- Reggie is another coach that has taken his school to a 2 point drop in prestige rating. But, I've seen some good things out of him, as West beat both Southeast and Bishop Carroll last season. I am going to give him at least 1 more year to really impress me.

So I've got 2 coaches that are fired, and 2 more coaches that I expect to leave due to taking a job elsewhere.

I have hired 2 of what I think were the best available coaches that didn't have a job.

Shane Kormelink has been hired at Kapaun. Shane was the assistant coach at Louisiana-Lafayette during the 2010 season but was let go after the season, and did not work last season. I think he is a great young coach that will get some recruits to Kapaun. Here is a look at his profile.

Code:

Wichita South has a new head coach, as I have hired Kuji Chagulia for that role. He has no coaching experience, so this will be his first shot at coaching in the NCAA. I think he'll do very well.

With only 5 schools looking for coaches right now, there's really only 1 school out of the 5 that I thought would come calling.

N.C. State, Pacific, Washington, West Virginia, and Xavier are the 5 openings, and as expected, Pacific was the only one to offer. They have offered their position to both Shane Dreiling and Marty Frankamp.

Pacific has a prestige of 49, are a member of the Big West Conference, a $330,000 budget, and had a 19-14 record and a recruiting class of 172.

Honestly, the more I look at this deal, I'm not sure it's a higher profile job than either Bishop Carroll or Southeast. So I turned it down for both Shane and Marty. I'm sure the coaching carousel will open up more jobs eventually.

Fortunately, another job has opened up, and it's a good one.

Central Michigan (prestige 69, $433,750 budget, Mid-American Conference, 28-6 last season, and recruiting class #114) has offered Shane Dreiling their coaching position.

In looking, there is a lot of similarties between Central Michigan and Bishop Carroll, budget is about the same, roster is about the same, but the chance to jump to a prestige 3 conference was too much to pass up, so I've accepted the job for Shane. Which means the Bishop Carroll job is now open, but not for long.

Deacon Palmer, come on down, you are the new head coach at Bishop Carroll. You have been the coach-in-waiting at this job, and you have no experience. But I think you'll fit in nicely and keep Bishop Carroll at a good pace.

Hold on though, we aren't done... Marty Frankamp has another offer.

San Diego (72 prestige, $456,125 budget, West Coast Conference, 27-8 record last season, and recruiting class of 191. This is an easy decision.. Marty is now the head coach at San Diego.

So I have 1 new spot to fill, but it was expected. I'm going to stop here for now as I have to eat and get ready for work, but tomorrow I'll evaluate the list of potential hires to fill the job at Southeast.

If there is anything else you guys would like to see in this dynasty report, let me know. I will be keeping track of both Shane and Marty's progress, as well as Ryan's and Eddie's. So if anybody has any input I'd love to hear it.

A couple things that I have been pondering within this dynasty report, which I am going to have you great readers help me with.

1. We do have some interactive coaches in this dynasty, those being at Carroll, Kapaun, North, and South. My question to you guys (and anybody else that wants to join)... eventually you will receive other job offers, and there may come a time when I have to fire you. At this point, would you like me to place you where I would be better fit? Or do you want to choose your job? For instance, say that bbgunn has a great season at south next year and gets offered jobs from 5 or 6 different schools. Do you want me to put you at the job I think would be best? Or would you like to pick yourself from those jobs? I would be inclined to let you guys pick your next job, as it only seems fair, since you signed up. Thoughts please.

2. Job security. We have 4 new coaches in the league this season (we will have as soon as I fill the Southeast job). What kind of job security do new coaches get? Should I give them a free pass for 2 or 3 years, and then evaluate them? Or should they be at risk of being fired after their first season. I'm torn on this one, as I don't see too many coaches getting the ax after one season at a job, but I don't want to give them too much of a grace period if they just aren't getting the job done. I'm thinking a free pass first year, then the second year their job is at risk. Thoughts on this please? Thanks.

As far as I know, that's all I have for now. I will be filling the Southeast job later today, as well as doing conference predictions for next season. Hope you all enjoy.

1. I have no strong thoughts either way, So whichever you ar more comfortable wwith is fine with me.

2. I concur that the new folks should get a "honeymoon" period of 1 year

1. i would like to know my jobs, because there are some schools i wouldn't coach at, so i personally would like to know my job offers and let me choose if i want one and which one i want.

2. i like ntndeacons idea about the honeymoon. give them their first year no matter how bad they are and then after their second year fire them if need be. i agree i never have heard of a coach bein fired after one year unless they get in trouble with the law or something.

Well I had a long post drawn out about my choices for coaching for the Southeast job, but for whatever reason the forums claimed I wasn't logged in when I was, so I lost my post. So I'll just simplify this one. I was looking at about 5 current assistant coaches to fill the Wichita Southeast job. I need someone that can recruit well, as Southeast has been dismal in recruiting lately. They have a lot of talent, but it is all upperclassmen. The underclassmen leave a lot to be desired. So my choice is..

Florida Recruiting Coordinator James Cordeiro! He has led Florida to a top 10 NCAA recruiting ranking in his 2 years there. His ratings are 100,26,17,37. While his offense and defense ratings aren't the greatest, I have confidence he will hire assistants that will help him in those roles.

Ryan Hujing will get to try his luck again, as he was hired to be the recruiting coordinator at Arkansas. Hopefully he'll have better success there.

As far as new coach Shannon Elliott, he was not offered a job and will have to wait another season.

Eddie Tate has far too many problems going on right now, and nobody will even look at him until he gets his legal situation under control. His coaching career may be over.

I'm not going to do a team by team prediction as its too hard to figure out where everybody might finish in conference, especially since teams are so balanced. I look for Bishop Carroll, Southeast, and Northwest to be the top 3again. I also look for South to have a promising season. I think they'll be the surprise team of the year.

As we enter the new year of 2013, I look at the standing for the GWAL through December, and all I can do is shake my head. My new hires just are not panning out, and luckily for some of them, I've decided to give all new hires a 1 year grace period. My top 2 teams that I can always count on have losing records, and I have 3 teams with 2-8 records. Yikes.

Code:
2012 Greater Wichita Athletic League Standings TEAM CW CL Pct W L Pct RPI Prestige -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Wichita Northwest Grizzlies 0 0 .000 6 6 .500 319 31 Bishop Carroll Eagles 0 0 .000 5 8 .385 301 61 Wichita Southeast Buffaloes 0 0 .000 5 6 .455 323 66 Wichita East Blue Aces 0 0 .000 4 8 .333 112 7 Wichita Heights Falcons 0 0 .000 4 7 .364 206 29 Wichita West Pioneers 0 0 .000 4 6 .400 275 33 Wichita South Titans 0 0 .000 2 8 .200 65 34 Kapaun Mt. Carmel Crusaders 0 0 .000 2 8 .200 305 19 Wichita North Redskins 0 0 .000 2 8 .200 328 28

No team has a winning record, and only one team is even .500. Something has to change. I know we are a prestige 2 conference, but dang.

A couple other notes I forget to mention..

Shane Dreiling has led Central Michigan to a 7-6 record so far. Not bad so far.

Marty Frankamp is doing quite well at San Diego, having a 9-4 record to this point. However, most of their wins are against teams with an over 200 RPI.

Ryan Hujing over at Arkansas won't answer my phone calls so I don't know how good of a recruiting job he has done over there, but I can tell you that they are 12-1 and ranked 4th in the country.

January is complete, and its safe to say that the GWAL is a 1 bid league this season. No, I'm not talking about the big dance, I'm talking about the entire postseason. 4 postseason tournaments, and the GWAL will send the conference tournament champion to the NCAA tournament, and that will be it barring a miracle. The teams in this league can't even beat some of the worst, lower prestige teams in the NCAA, I don't get it. Here's a look at the standings.

Code:
2012 Greater Wichita Athletic League Standings TEAM CW CL Pct W L Pct RPI Prestige -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Bishop Carroll Eagles 5 2 .714 10 11 .476 292 61 Wichita Southeast Buffaloes 5 2 .714 10 9 .526 284 66 Wichita North Redskins 5 3 .625 7 12 .368 251 28 Wichita West Pioneers 4 3 .571 8 10 .444 267 33 Wichita Heights Falcons 3 4 .429 8 11 .421 295 29 Wichita South Titans 3 4 .429 5 13 .278 226 34 Wichita Northwest Grizzlies 3 4 .429 9 11 .450 306 31 Wichita East Blue Aces 3 4 .429 7 12 .368 240 7 Kapaun Mt. Carmel Crusaders 1 6 .143 3 15 .167 349 19

Surprise, surprise. Southeast and Bishop Carroll play like crap during the OOC schedule, but in conference they figure it out.

Well the conference season is over, and it went about how i expected, with one real surprise.

Code:
2012 Greater Wichita Athletic League Standings TEAM CW CL Pct W L Pct RPI Prestige -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Bishop Carroll Eagles 12 4 .750 17 13 .567 230 61 Wichita Southeast Buffaloes 12 4 .750 17 11 .607 204 66 Wichita West Pioneers 11 5 .688 15 13 .536 201 33 Wichita Northwest Grizzlies 8 8 .500 15 15 .500 272 31 Wichita South Titans 7 9 .438 10 18 .357 278 34 Wichita Heights Falcons 7 9 .438 12 17 .414 293 29 Wichita North Redskins 7 9 .438 9 19 .321 268 28 Wichita East Blue Aces 4 12 .250 9 20 .310 312 7 Kapaun Mt. Carmel Crusaders 4 12 .250 6 22 .214 341 19

Not a real surprise to see Southeast and Bishop Carroll at the top, but how about West? Finishing in third place, and they swept Northwest in the regular season, played 2 tough games against Bishop Carroll, and beat Southeast once. The real story of the season though is non-conference play. That's where the GWAL is lacking and we have to figure out how to get better.

2012 GWAL First Round

(8) Wichita East defeats (9) Kapaun Mt. Carmel 73-61.

So for the second straight year these 2 teams meet in the first round, this time East gets the good result, ending a dismal year for Kapaun.

2012 GWAL Quarterfinals

(1) Bishop Carroll defeats (8) Wichita East 82-75
(4) Wichita Northwest defeats (5) Wichita South 92-80
(3) Wichita West over (6) Wichita Heights 63-51
(2) Wichita Southeast over (7) Wichita North 62-59

So once again the top 4 seeds advance to the semifinals. Hoepfully West or Northwest will pull an upset so that we don't have another Carroll-Southeast final. Time to get another team a chance.

Well so I don't get my wish, unfortunately. However, I'm still holding out hope that West will get into a tournament, and I would think the Southeast-Carroll loser would be in good shape to get into the NIT, or the CBI. So I guess it's not all bad.

2010 GWAL Championship

(1) Bishop Carroll beats (2) Wichita Southeast 87-82.

Bishop Carroll has a pattern going. 3 years in the NCAA, 3 NCAA tournament appearences, 3 GWAL Tournament Championships. Congrats to Deacon Palmer on keeping the streak going. After looking at the standings and RPI's one final time, my first prediction may be right. While Southeast does have a 20-12 record, their RPI is 206. The NIT will probably pass on them, and the 2 minor tournaments might as well. I don't see a chance in heck for West who is only 1 game over .500 with an RPI of 218. We'll see what happens.

Bishop Carroll gets the 16 seed in the NCAA Midwest Region and will face #1 seed Marquette. I guess that's what happens when you don't win any non-conference games. Or hardly any.

Wichita Southeast got snubbed in my opinion. A 20-12 record should have been enough to at least get them into the CIT. I'm pretty pissed about this development.

In other news:

Shane Dreiling led Central Michigan to the MAC tournament championship and a 10 seed in the Midwest Region of the NCAA tournament, where they take on 7th seed Rider.

Marty Frankamp's San Diego team lost in the semifinals of the WCC tournament, and got the 5 seed in the South Region of the NIT tournament. Their first game will be against 4th seed Indiana.

Just so that everybody knows, the original 9 coaches in the GWAL, I will always keep track of where they are at and report on it. The reason for this is that all 9 are personal friends of mine, and I added their names into the game with their permission. Bigmexmma is Wichita North coach Rudy Arellano, and he set up an account to help me out. So those 9 coaches I will always keep track of, along with any interactive coaches.

I'm trying to find ways to keep this dynasty going as long as I can, so I am going to keep track of other schools, conference prestige movement, major college hires, things like that. I would like to keep this report going for as long as I can, because I'm having fun with it.

So if any readers have a particular college or conference they'd like me to keep track of, I will, as long as it doesn't become to taskful. Just let me know. Thanks.

Arkansas loses to N.C. State in the Sweet Sixteen.

In the NCAA Final Four, Washington beat N.C. State 70-84 and Clemson beat Texas A&M 75-57. Clemson then won their second straight national championship with an 82-76 victory.

As for as the NIT goes, Notre Dame beat Temple 64-57, and Texas beat surprising Jacksonville State 90-80 in the Final Four. Then Texas proceeded to hammer Notre Dame 71-44 to win the NIT championship.

Nevada won the CBI championship series 2 games to 1, beating Ohio St. Nevada won the first game 81-58, lost the second game 70-69, then won the deciding game 65-61.

And in the CIT, South Alabama, coming off a surprising NCAA Final Four appearance a couple years ago, beat Evansville 72-67 in the championship game.

I was spot on in my decision for the GWAL Coach of the Year. I gave the nod to Reggie Taylor, who led Wichita West to their first winning season in the NCAA, and a convincing third place finish in the GWAL. The NCAA agreed with me, as here are the GWAL awards for the 2011-2012 season:

I can honestly say that as far as recruiting goes, Bishop Carroll and Wichita Southeast are trying to distance themselves from the GWAL and give their team a better chance to win championships in the future. Hiring James at Southeast gave them the best recruiting class in the GWAL.Wichita South is also setting themselves up to have a good run in the GWAL, or at least compete. They have had 2 years in a row with recruiting in the top 130 of the nation.

One other note on recruiting, Ryan Hujing gave Arkansas the #3 ranked recruiting class in the nation. I realize there is a big difference between Kapaun Mt. Carmel and Arkansas, but I would have thought he'd have been able to get us a couple good recruits at Kapaun.

2013 Head Coach Evaluations

Bishop Carroll, Kapaun Mt. Carmel, South, and Southeast had new coaches this year, and I give new hires a 1 year honeymoon period, so I won't even worry about those jobs.

Wichita East- James Cole -- In 3 years in the NCAA, James has only taken East from a 0 prestige to a 10 prestige. Granted, I know it kind of gives him a free pass because as long as he wins games the prestige is bound to go up, but I really feel that East is just a couple big breaks away from having a breakthrough season, and I really feel James is that guy, so he's staying put.

Wichita Heights- Bryan Chadwick -- Heights did win 2 more games this past season than they did in 2011, and the prestige did go up from 29 to 30. But it started at 31. However, with Heights having a recruiting ranking under 200 for the first time since we joined the NCAA, and picking up their first 3 star recruit, I'm include to give Bryan a year and see what he can do with it.

Wichita North- Rudy Arellano -- This one ate at me for a long time. North took a major step back this year, going from winning 13 games to only winning 9 this year. Maybe I'm letting friendship get in the way here, but I am going to keep Rudy around. I'm not really sure why, I just have a hunch.

Wichita Northwest- Mitch Linn -- There are only 4 schools in the GWAL that have had a winning record in a season, and Northwest is one of them. However, I need to see more from Mitch next season, because he is a very talented coach, and Northwest has a decent looking roster. He's staying at Northwest this season.

Wichita West- Reggie Taylor -- Didn't even have to think about this one. He took West to a winning season last year, a first in school history. He was GWAL coach of the year. He's staying at West, in hopes that he'll build on what he has going.

So, I'm not getting rid of any coaches this year, and I really don't expect any to get offers.

As expected, none of my coaches get job offers, which is fine with me. There were really no big coaching moves this offseason, as the head coaching period was over after 1 round.

Shannon Elliott was passed over for an assistant job again, and I don't know why. He has an 89 recruiting rating and an 81 rating in offensive development.

However, I did get a call from Eddie Tate today. He told me that he's worked out his personal problems and has taken a position as the scouting director at N.C. State. Good for him.
