Prediction: 2-1 Mexico win.

Anything better than that would be GREAT. Anything worse is...quite possible. I could see 3-0 or 3-1.

And yes - I was typing that before the announcers brought it up.

That is where I am at. I am afraid of a 3 goal loss. Anything close would be great.

I think that with the poor weather Costa Rica wasn't able to exploit the fact that the US backline were all strangers to each other. Mexico will have no such problem - their offensive movement on and off the ball is so much better than Costa Rica...

Well yeah, and there isn't snow to slow everyone down. Beasley at the back is ok in the snow, but he will be horribly exposed tonight.

Wow - the away team in this series hasn't won a qualifier in 41 years? YIKES. I didn't realize it was THAT bad.

I like that the commentators are clear homers and that there is one of each. Kinda like watching WWF back in the day with Bobby Heenan and Gene Okerlund.

Why is ding-dong calling him Matt Beasley? Oh...he's confusing Biesler and Beasley...that makes sense then.

I agree Pilotman I was just thinking the same thing, I'm waiting to hear the headset slam and then see the Mexican commentator trip a US player at a crucial moment.

Btw, I assume everyone here follows Jorge Arangure, but this stunned me:

Jorge Arangure ‏@jorgearangure 25m
Fascinating stat: Chicharito has never scored v US and Dempsey has never scored v Mexico.

Yellow coming for Edu for that?

Lucky break that wasn't a goal.

That's another goal where the Mexicans have somehow missed from less than 6 yards out. That can't last, can it?

I know Beasley is nowhere near a first-choice LB, but is his pace enough to make up for his complete lack of defensive awareness?

Probably better he did. 90 seconds left before extra time. You lay out and play it straight to Mexico and they're probably breaking, as not only is Demsey out of tr play, but so is Edu, Altidore and Zusi.

It feels like the US attack consists of Altidore by himself, with Dempsey playing behind him in the hope that he can create something, with 8 other guys behind the ball (Bradley's run aside)

Only reason I was hoping for something. Other than that, and that one ball in to Bradley in the box, it was a pretty dismal half for the US offensively.

I was surprised to see Bradley get the ball taken from him in the middle of the half. I honestly don't think I've seen that in years. He's probably the only guy tonight who I haven't seen make at least 1 hideous pass.

Beasley is out of his depth tonight. The center is holding nicely, but the marking on spot kicks is severely lacking.

Zusi disappears for loooooong stretches.

It's pretty clear the US has zero interest in even attempting to push or press in the attacking half. It's dangerous , because it lets Mexico constantly pressure the defense and Bradley/Edu whenever we knock it around. Back there.

Agree. Beasley has looked like a sieve. The US looked better towards the end but needs to string more than 3 passes together.

I guess for me, I would say the US just needs to defend the crosses and wings better. Don't care too much about the offense really as a 0-0 tie is good enough for me.

Interestingly, it's also contrary to what Jurgen was saying they were going to do before the game.

Can someone tell Edu to not dribble out of the back.

Also, is Altidore on the wing now? Seems odd.

All of our giveaways are on passes that we shouldn't be giving the ball away on either...they're not aggressive passes trying to make something happen, they're usually errant back-passes or square balls (yes, under some degree of pressure, but still).

Grant Wahl says Altidore has moved left, Gomez to the center. I don't understand why the target man is playing on the wing either.

Eddie Johnson probably coming on for Altidore then I'd assume?

Seems an odd choice - Jozy hasn't played bad at all I don't think. In fact, his holding up of the ball was actually being beneficial.

Disagree with Twellman's analysis - how is Altidore supposed to "get involved" when his team can't string more than 3 passes together? Everytime they got him the ball he held it up fine and got others involved.

US just needs to put together some kind of counter attack that results in at least a shot. Not sure they can hold on for another 30 minutes of constant pressure without going forward at all.

Thankfully, at the moment, Mexico appears to be playing for the perfect goal, the one where Dos Santos flutter and Hernandez shimmers as the ball glides into the net. Mexico seems to be a dangerous team when they just throw caution to the wind.

Just as I was about to suggest that maybe Zusi was done for...nicely done by him. They may actually pull out a point here.
