Week 7: White Rock (1-4) at Chesapeake (5-0)

Well, the team appears to be clicking on pretty much all cylinders, and is step by step making a believer out of my that our defense is actually now an asset to the team, rather than just a “good enough” group. We are basically running a pretty vanilla offense these days (not really pushing things downfield as much as we once did) and this team is really all about the red bars. It’s the time tested “my guys are better than your guys” approach, which for this team ought to be good enough to win a fair number of games.

Anyway – on to another home game – we’re healthy, in good form, and a solid favorite especially playing at home. The problem is that two teams in our division have only one loss each, so we haven’t really “pulled away’ very much, despite the fast start. So, this is a “should win” game where we don’t have the luxury of a lot of slack.

Onward…

Game MVP: Brent Sedor, Chesapeake Chili Dogs

Snappy Online Box Score

Through the first half the total yardage is practically dead even, but we lead 31-14 on the strengths of two short-field TD drives set up by turnovers. I’m not thrilled with our play on defense, but can’t really complain about the 17 point edge (despite an inexplicably bad late-half decision to kick a 19 yard FG on first-and-goal from the 2 with 30 seconds on the clock… so yes, I suppose that counts as complaining).

We end up with a comfortable win, and 7 TD passes for Sedor… even though the game just didn’t seem all that out of hand. Sedor was under 300 yards passing, so it’s not like it was bombs away all day – we just forced turnovers and remained opportunistic all day, and with that combination we’re just going hang something like 52 points pretty often. Big day for Quinn Vinatieri also – he posts 23-114 on the ground, and chips in with 6 catches for 59 yards and 3 TDs. After a slightly shaky start, we’re seeing some real dividends from the RB investment here.

Burt Pearson is hurt again – out two weeks with a concussion. We’ll do our usual reshuffling, and will expect to see more of Jamie Leverette in the coming couple of games. Pearson is a serious weapon, but we seem to do fine without him, short term at least.

No Burt Pearson, but an opponent we seem to overmatch. Nothing tricky here.

So, they march for a TD on their first possession, and I’m a little worried – but that’s basically all she wrote, as we took hold after that point and won convincingly again. Overall, not a great effort – we only managed 377 yards of offense and committed a ton of penalties. But a solid W, and nobody else got hurt – so we’ll definitely take that.

Week 9: Chesapeake (7-0) at Coney Island (2-5)

Odd schedule so far – we have gotten a steady diet of losing-record teams early on this season, likely meaning that we will have our hands much fuller down the road. Regardless, despite being a heavy favorite, we still need to execute to get it done here. As usual, I don’t have anything too tricky panned in the gameplan this week, just “go get em.”

Snappy Online Box Score

Well, we end up with a win – but not exactly an easy one. Hmmm… Sedor goes 27 of 35 and has no picks. We rush for over 200 yards on around 6 per carry. And this is a close game???

The defense did not have its best day today – Coney Island got a lot done against us (led by former Chili Dog QB Harry Ross, I’d note). Two early missed FGs kept the game close, and then we let them put together several long scoring drives – exactly what I want to avoid. Well, at least we pulled it out in the end to stay unblemished in the W/L column.

Burt Pearson ought to be ready to go for next week’s game at home against South Carolina – both they and Portland stand at 7-1, as none of our three teams has lost a single game to anyone outside the trio (South Carolina’s only loss came to Portland, on opening day).

There is no room to complain about the 8-0 record… but it’s pretty clear that our remaining schedule is going to be packed with tough games. So far, so good.

Code:
Chesapeake Chili Dogs Team Rank Rushes per Game 33.8 5 Rushing Yards 150.1 7 Yards Per Carry 4.45 15 Pass Attempts 33.5 18 (T) Completions 22.8 9 Completion Pct. 67.9 4 Passing Yards 311.8 3 Yards Per Attempt 9.31 2 Yards Per Catch 13.70 3 Total Yardage Gained 455.0 1 3rd Down Conversions 47.5 7 Points Per Game 37.0 1 Pass Rush Pct. 19.4 16 Pass Defense Pct. 64.1 2 Turnovers 4 1 Turnover Margin +11 1

Statistically, this is a very strong team. The 4.45 yards per carry is only around the league average, but it’s substantially better than we saw last year. We are near the top of the league in passing effectiveness by nearly any measure, and that has been without our top receiver for most of the season so far. 455 yards a game is going to put up a lot of wins. Better than +1 per game in turnovers won’t hurt either.

Code:
Opponents Team Rank Rushes per Game 23.1 6 Rushing Yards 96.5 5 Yards Per Carry 4.17 7 Pass Attempts 34.3 14 Completions 19.6 7 Completion Pct. 57.3 7 Passing Yards 221.3 6 Yards Per Attempt 6.46 10 Yards Per Catch 11.27 15 Total Yardage Gained 309.3 3 3rd Down Conversions 31.3 1 Points Per Game 13.4 1 Pass Rush Pct. 16.0 5 Pass Defense Pct. 28.1 3 Turnovers 15 5 (T)

We are really looking strong on this side of the ball, too – yes, we slipped in the last game, and yes we have faced some teams with weaker records. We’ll see how things hold up with a more challenging schedule down the stretch – but what’s not to like here? Top ten in both yards per rush and yards per attempt, we’re tops in stopping on third downs, and tops in points allowed.

Code:
Passing Pos Att Comp Yards Y/Att TD Int Rate 16 B. Sedor QB 268 182 2494 9.31 26 1 128.2 **Team --- 268 182 2494 9.31 26 1 128.2 $$Opp --- 274 157 1770 6.46 7 9 71.5

26 touchdowns is a really good season total for many quarterbacks. So far, so good. We have not really been a greedy, gaudy offense though – Sedor has been opportunistic, and deadly in the red zone, but we have not been “bombs away” – we’re basically dead even in number of pass and run plays thus far. The 26:1 TD to interception ratio is…uh…pretty solid.

Code:

We pushed this offseason to add an impact running back, and while the 4.2 yards per carry isn’t outstanding – we have to like the dependable effort we get from QV every week. He’s sitting on just about 1,000 total yards from scrimmage, has found the end zone 10 times, and really has been excellent for us so far. Jumbo Kinney continues in his supporting role, but has yet to really make the claim for a bigger share of the load with QV playing well in the #1 slot.

We have spread it around a lot this season, in the absence of top target Burt Pearson. That has been good for our two regulars, Kent Fields and George Ellis, each of whom are sitting on the halfway marks to thousand-yard seasons. And as usual, Jamie Leverette just keep sneaking his way into the endzone – 6 more this year despite playing, still, a reserve and rotation role.

Matt Sheldon is finally assuming his role as the real leader of the defensive front, but he will likely never be the serious tackle machine that his predecessor Doug McKenzie was for us. That’s fine – we like what we get from him in all facets of the game, and we have a lot around him. Willie backer Richie Shaw is playing really well, especially in the passing game (9 passes defensed!) and pass rush, where he has been our best blitzer as well.

The cornerback pairing of White and Gailey remain very effective, with nickelback CJ Daniels again playing over his head. Brett Vesser is getting rotation time at both SS and SLB, and it’s paying off for us, I think – getting him on the field helps most everything we do.

Up front, our pass rush has been solid – Kerry Meadows is the best guy we have on the end, and Dwight Reynolds is tallying up the hurries as well, while our multi-man DT rotation seems to keep everyone fresh and effective.

I like this team – I don’t have a single position where I’m really worried about our #1 or #2 option. We have been clicking well so far, and have a titanic schedule ahead. We’ll see how we pull through now that the going is gonna get rough.

Week 10: South Carolina (7-1) at Chesapeake (8-0)

Okay, after the layoff a really big game to kick off the second half of the season. A loss drops us right even with two division rivals, but a win gives us a little breathing room and the head to head tiebreakers.

We have Burt Pearson back in the saddle, and I reckon we will go to him early and often today.

So, the Crossfire engineer a solid first half, and on our last two possessions they stop us deep in our own territory, get a short punt and great field position, and move in to score for a 9-0 lead at the break. We are not getting crushed, but we need to get more done on offense.

The initial stages of the third quarter are painful. We are again driving, but Sedor is sacked and loses a fumble. We stop them on a key third down, but a penalty gives them new life, and they inch up to nail another FG to lead 12-0.

We drive for a FG, and then give one up, and we’re into the fourth quarter with us trailing 15-3 and in real trouble. An interception around midfield practically seals the deal, and I don’t see how we get out of this hole.

We do manage to get the bal back and drive, but I’m smelling some “late game drill” logic in the playcalling, as we settle for a FG and still trail by 9 with 6 minutes left – not sure how the FG there makes a whole lot of sense for us. SCA eats three minutes, and we get it back, but still need two scores. And now the dreaded “familiars” are ensuring that we can’t do anything at all regardless. This one is over.

The fact that we manage to overcome the “familiars” and score the game-ending meaningless TD really just drives home how stupid the decision was to settle for a FG when we were late in the 4th quarter and trailing by 12 points. How does closing the margin to 9 help anything? Ugh.

And now, we are in a three-way tie in our own division, rather than well out ahead.

After another game I recently watched painfully closely, I vowed to stop watching Solevision. I just don't feel like the game holds up well to that much scrutiny.

I broke that vow today (has been a while since a MP sim). Bad call.

Week 11: Dodge City (2-7) at Chesapeake (8-1)

Dodge City decided to trade away their top two receivers this offseason, and the result has apparently been to gut their offense, rather completely. They fell immediately from the ranks of top contenders last year (they flirted with a perfect season last year before a late season collapse) to also-rans. Not like our division needs more power teams, honestly.

Anyhow – need to take care of business at home here. We have our starting cadre at OL back in place, and are basically fully healthy now.

Very solid win, good in pretty much all facets. We do lose CB Emmanuel White to an injury, and that bodes poorly for some big games ahead. But we are pleased with this effort, of course.

We are favored at home, but against a team that tends to play fairly error-free ball. I like our chances to just be the better team, but we need to avoid giving this one away.

Nonsnappy box score

MLB Matt Sheldon goes down with an early injury, and that could soften up our defense a good deal, actually. But the really big news is that with a 17-0 lead in the third quarter, Sedor comes up with a “serious” foot injury. Our offense screeches to a complete halt at that point, but fortunately we have enough of a lead and are playing well on D to keep this one in the W column. But this is a real worry – Sedor is out for the rest of the regular season, at least. Ouch.

This is a bad situation, and it’s time to start looking at where we might land. With Gerhardt in the saddle for the rest of the season, we will likely be pretty inconsistent in the passing game, and we will now have a rookie starting at MLB for us. If we end up going 3-3 down the stretch, 12-4 is still very likely to be good enough to get into the playoffs, but in our division that’s only worth a ticket to the wild card round and a rough road to the title game.

Losing at home at South Carolina gave us a tough road ahead. Losing the players we needed to get it done probably cements the situation. I think we look like a wild card team for this year, and will have to put it all together there, assuming we even get in.

Week 13: Chesapeake (10-1) at Norwich (5-6)

Road game, with Alex Gerhardt at the helm. We know what is at stake here – at 10-1 we are already thinking playoffs and seeding, but we don’t have a wide margin to deal with. South Carolina did oblige us by losing last week, but they still hold the tiebreaker on us, so any edge they gain puts us right back in jeopardy. So, they are all big weeks from here on out. I resist the temptation to shift the offense to something much more conservative, and we will let Gerhardt win this one for us if he can, rather than play not to lose.

Game MVP: Alex Gerhardt, Chesapeake Chili Dogs

Snappy box score

So, we get the much-needed win here. We did have an early-game “turnaround moment” as Norwich was driving to potentially go up 14-0, but CB Quentin Gailey came up with a big interception in the end zone, and we marched for a tying score on that drive (topped by a huge pass play to TE Robert Cooper). That swing marked the end of our serious worries, and Gerhardt played very well to keep us in control.

Topping off the good showing was South Carolina surprisingly losing another game, giving us a bit more breathing room. We now have two games on them in the division race, and Portland’s QB injury woes have seen them fall to 8-4. So, with 4 games left to play, a 3-1 finish wraps up the division no matter what, and we still have a shot even if we split them. Hell Creek has resurfaced as a major conference threat, but to be candid the difference between seed #1 and #2 is not my main concern – it’s the drop to the #5 slot that really worries me.

If we can hold the bye week, we have a shot to get to start our playoffs at home, with Sedor in the lineup. That is where we want to be, of course. Today’s win keeps us on track for that goal.

Week 14: Chesapeake (11-1) at Fall River (6-5)

Well, Fall River is the team I put money on to win it all in the pre-season betting, but they have had a rough season. Actually a terrible start, but a recent recovery has seen them playing well. I consider this a very tough game. They have a history of beating us even in our best years, anyway.

Well, looks like we simply didn’t show up this week. Great. Discard all that talk about actually having an edge on other teams and some kind of “inside track” – now we are right back in spitting distance of a wild card path again. Dammit.

17 of 44 passing, with 2 picks – that is going to lead to an L pretty often, no matter what you’re doing.

Fall River "D" was ferocious in that one. Looking at the in-game "Player Of The Week" metric, I believe the Fall River D had 5 (5!) players make the list - 2 DL, 2 LB, and a CB. Never seen that before.

Tough loss, Quik.

Week 15: Portland (9-4) at Chesapeake (11-2)

Tough game, but we are at home. I am risking re-injury to CB Emmanuel White to get him back out there, and have (perhaps unwisely) shuffled up the lineup a shade as well. But we will once again let Alex Gerhardt have the whole playbook, and we won’t be scaling back to try not to lose.

Portland ran through a tough spell without their starting QB, but he is back and they are still in line for a playoff spot themselves – so they need this game too.

We look fabulous on our opening drive, until sputtering and halting at their 1 yard line and settling for a chipshot FG. Our offense chugs through the first half looking good, but they also split through our defense pretty easily, and it’s only a 17-13 lead for us at the break.

After some punt-trading, in the late third quarter, a TD gives us an 11-point cushion. We put it away as both offenses eventually get run under by the “familiars” and we have the lead at that point – not a terribly impressive win, but we had a pretty good second half to get out ahead, at least.

Snappy box score

So, we stay a game ahead of South Carolina in the division, which is good. Next week we travel to play French, who have had a resurgence this year with a good young QB and the two all-too-familiar WRs who used to tear us up when playing for Dodge City. And we finish with South Carolina, regrettably – so they definitely get their chance to even things up and take the division, almost no matter what happens in week 16.

Week 16: Chesapeake (13-1) at French (8-6)

Okay, meaningful game for us this week – but the really big one is next week against South Carolina, where they will be able to take the division with a win at home. For us, we will keep Gerhardt in at QB (Sedor is up to doubtful and unlikely to be reinjured, but we will keep him out and consider him for next week). I do have MLB Matt Shaldon back in the saddle, as I want to have him and Emmanuel White fresh and ready for the meaningful postseason games ahead.

Game MVP: Alex Gerhardt, Chesapeake Chili Dogs

Snappy box score

Great showing by our two biggest guns on offense –Quinn Vinatieri and Burt Pearson each post over 150 yards and 3 TDs on the day.

So, big win for us – but that isn’t even the big news. The BIG news is that Fall River (who crushed up a couple weeks ago) nipped South Carolina this week, which clinches our division title and bye week! That is big news – and gives us a great opportunity to essentially rest our way to the divisional playoff. We will either be the #1 or #2 seed after all, and I really don’t care too much about which one we land, it’s the week off and the home opener that really matters.

Week 17: Chesapeake (13-2) at South Carolina (11-4)

With the gap between us stretching to two games last week, this game drops from being critical to nearly meaningless. SCA is in as a wild card, we are in as a bye week team, and the only thing we have on the line is basically seeding slots. For us, a win locks up the #1 seed, and that is worth playing for. I don’t know what to expect from SCA, it’s possible we won’t see key starters over there. Sedor is not ready yet, but the rest of our A-team is in.

Game MVP: Alex Gerhardt, Chesapeake Chili Dogs

Box score, snappiness uncertain

So, solid win, we get our top seed, and get to flex a little bit for the stat-counters out there. We wrap the season at 14-2, and other than an uncharacteristic meltdown against Fall River, really looked solid all year.

We work out a new contract with QB Alex Gerhardt, who has obviously proven himself up to the challenge of running this offense. With Sedor missing time two seasons in a row (after being an ironman up to that point) this may be a worry for us, but it’s good to know we are in strong hands even if the hero isn’t here. Hopefully Sedor will be ready to go after the bye week, and we will be back in top form for the home opener.

Divisional Playoff: South Carolina at Chesapeake

Home game. We are basically very healthy, and have Sedor back to play (tagged as probable, he will go assuming the injury lets him in-game). We are made 6 point favorites against a South Carolina team that has a powerhouse offense and apparently is successfully tinkering with it gameplan of late, yielding a huge win in the wild card round. Not an easy draw – but being right here is what we played the whole season to earn.

Against my better judgment, I am watching in Solevision…

Live game commentary:

We open with our bread and butter this year – a quick pass to Quinn Vinatieri for a first down.. Sedor looks very sharp as we march for an opening TD on 5 of 6 passing and a TD to TE Cooper. We follow up by forcing a three-and-out – a perfect start to the game. The rest of the first quarter is a punting exchange.

After our first drive, we have been held well in check, and they get on the board with a FG to make it 7-3 early in the second quarter. Our inability to finish third down plays is biting us in this early going. But we get the first takeaway of the game in their territory, and put Cooper into the end zone again. We get another turnover (also by CJ Daniels) to give us one last shot to score, and tack on a FG at the end of the first half to lead 17-3.

South Carolina gets off the ropes, though, with a TD drive to open the second half, making it 17-10. We have had a couple pretty big plays, and only sit on a one score advantage – yardage is pretty even, this game is not over by any stretch. We miss a long FG, but our defense holds and we get it back. The third quarter ends with us, once again, failing on third down and lining up to punt. This juggernaut offense has not really clicked today past the very first possession.

South Carolina opens up with a huge run from their star RB Grady Milliken, and then he tops it off with a short TD run, and we are tied. A dropped pass and two pressures later, and we are punting it right back. This is taking a bad turn. South Carolina is ripping off yardage in “chunks” and has now outgained us on the day, this is slipping away. Milliken again gets a short TD plunge, and with 6 minutes left we trail by seven.

We rebound quickly, though, as WR George Ellis makes a big kickoff return and gets us right into scoring position. There is still time on the clock but we are threatening to score – and it’s Pearson who gets the catch to pull us even. So, SCA has 2 minutes and a lot of offensive momentum, but now it feels like they are the ones who just let something slip away.

They get a good return to their own 40, and a couple nice plays set them well into FG territory. Looks like the worm has turned for good here. They run a couple of rushing plays, get Milliken in for yet another TD, and take the lead for good this time. Our 18 seconds to do something nets us two 14-yard completions and one second on the clock for a hypothetical 42-yard desperation pass – which will probably actually only be a 20-yard pass anyhow. Ahh, of course – our mobile QB decides now is a good time to tuck the ball and run for 10 yards, even better.

Good game, SCA, good luck. Nice season, everybody.

Tough loss, Quik. I was hoping for a repeat of last year.
