You know what sucks?

Having your first bad outing of the year and having to wait forever to make another start and make the nasty taste of losing go away.

Oh, and having your ERA go up 1 1/2 points in one game REALLY sucks.

GAME 18 - Friday, April 20th - Radio Broadcast

Fastball, swung on and missed
Take a seat Mr. Robinson!
Hunter retires the first batter to
face him in the top of the 1st

Grounded towards first
Potpie grabs it
IT'S A RACE TO THE BAG
SAFE!

Changeup...
Ties Heilmann up in knots
An awkward swinging strike three!

Cochrane slowly moves away from the base
The runner unable to take a big lead
Hunter keeps looking him back

Hunter loses him
Snider heads down to first

There's a drive to straight away right
Pflaggstettler is running back...
At the warning track...
It might be.. IT..
NO!... a great leaping grab by
Persimmon Pflaggstettler!
Another foot and it's out of here
That's three outs here in
the top of the first
At the end of one half inning,
for Left Outs
No runs, one hit, no errors
and 2 men left on base
FOFC is coming to bat

And Blade will sit down...
strike three called
Left Outs gets the first out of the inning

Nights swings and misses
STRIKE THREE!
Carlton strikes out Jeff Nights
And there's two away

Tucker cuts on a curve that
misses in the dirt
That ball is trapped nicely by Cochrane
Tucker was badly fooled by Carlton's
big breaking curve
STRIKE THREE!
A. J. was a little overanxious
Three up, three down
Carlton sails through the
bottom of the 1st

McCovey really smacks this one
He was waiting on the change
It's a gapper...
But hit high...
Tucker has a shot at it
He leaps for it at the fence...
OUT!!!
One out
Due up next is Goose Goslin

Outside fastball...
The swing...
There's a drive into left by Goslin
He went with the pitch
Hitting it the other way
Smart hitting got him a single
Left Outs has the runner on first

A low change-up by Hunter...
Vaughan chases it...
Manages a slow bouncer to Nights...
He takes it, tosses it to Blade...
Getting the force on Goslin
The relay back to first...
Not in time...
Vaughan beats the throw by a step
Two down
Bullock asks for a new ball
He calls time and trots out to the mound
A conference going on between
Bullock and Hunter

Base hit to left for Carlton
Tony LaRussa puts up the stop sign...
Vaughan will stay at second

Smashed to third
Palmer grabs it
His throw to first
GOT HIM!
Score It: 5-3
That's all for the Leftovers
No runs, 2 hits, no errors and
2 men left on base...
We go to the bottom of the 2nd...
Scoreless game

Sinking line drive
Caught by Jimmie Foxx
So one up and one gone

Potpie is hit!
That ball hit him on the arm
Jeeberoni is squeezing his elbow
The trainer, Tay Pemup
is out to check him
He'll stay in
He gets a nice round of applause
He heads to first

Bouncer to short...made to
order doubleplay ball
Vaughan has it on two hops...wrists
it to Robinson
He evades the slide of Potpie
The throw to McCovey...
It just nips Bullock!
So it is nothing across for the All
Stars in the bottom of the 2nd
After 2 innings
FOFC has no runs, no hits and no errors
While Left Outs has no runs,
3 hits and no errors

Base hit to center for Cochrane
A. J. Tucker is trying to get to it
This might be stretched into a double!
No... he decides to hold up

There goes Cochrane...
And it's ball four...
Cochrane pulls up and walks into second

Flyball to center
it's caught
Cochrane has a chance to move up...
Cochrane will hold at second base

He rips a grounder
It's into right field
Jimmie Foxx has a base hit
Foxx extends his hitting streak
to 10 games!
Cochrane scores from second!
Heilmann takes third

McCovey swings on a ball in on his fists
It results in a pop up to second
Blade is under it...
A few steps to his right...
One hands it for the out
McCovey looked bad on that pitch
That's the second out of the inning

Foxx watches Hunter as he inches
away from the base
Hunter holds the runner

Base hit to left for Goslin
Heilmann scores
Tony LaRussa puts up the stop sign...
Foxx will stay at second

A slider by Hunter
Vaughan gets good wood on it...
Tucker back-pedals quickly...
Up with his glove...
Out!
That retires the side... but not before
2 runs cross the plate for Left Outs
After 2 and a half innings,
Left Outs ahead 2 to 0

Well hit by Palmer
Goslin moves back...
Still going back...
He makes the catch up against the fence
One down for FOFC
Gerald Gazelle is in the on-deck circle
ready to make his way to
the plate for FOFC

Gazelle hits a fly ball to right
Harry Heilmann camps under it
He's got it
Two up, two down for FOFC

Curve ball...
Hunter swings and misses by a mile
The bottom dropped out of that one!
A wicked pitch!
That wraps up the inning for FOFC
By the way, FOFC is 9 and 1
in their last ten games

Carlton hits it sharply on the ground...
into the hole at third
Palmer dives...
It's through for a base hit!
He almost got his glove on it...
Carlton reaches on a sizzling
single to left
A nice try by the third baseman,
Deacon Palmer

It's a scorching liner
to the third baseman
OUT!
Palmer didn't have to move!
Carlton stays put
One away
While we wait for the next batter
Let's see what's happening in other games

AL Post WWII and Japanese League
have yet to score
NL Pre WWII and Caribbean
have yet to score
Negro League II leads NL Post WWII 1 to 0
AL Pre WWII clipping Negro League I 4 to 0
Turn of Century besting Old Timers 5 to 0
Dead Ball Era is edging Late 20th 1 to 0
And here in FOFC Left Outs on top 2 to 0

The pitch is low
It bounces away from Bullock!
He's got it
But there's no throw.
It's scored a wild pitch.

Base hit to left for Cochrane
Tony LaRussa won't risk sending
the runner home...
Runner holds.

Fastball in on the hands
Heilmann tries to hold up, but can't
He hits a blooper to left
Gazelle is coming in fast
Now he has it in his sights...
Easy out
Gerald rifles it back in to Blade
He walks it on over to Hunter
FOFC gets the second out of the inning

Sharp slider, catches the outside corner
Snider swings at it...
Hammers a hard grounder right at short
Picked up smoothly...
Throw to first...
IT'S OFF THE BAG!!...
Potpie grabs it, turns back to the bag
NOT IN TIME!
Snider is SAFE!
That'll be an error on that play
Score It: E6
Carlton scores from third!
Cochrane takes second
Snider to first

Change up...
Foxx was way out in front...
Strike Three
That does it for Left Outs here
in the top of the 4th
But they pick up 1 run
So After 3 and a half innings,
Left Outs on top 3 to 0

Curve, a beauty...
Strike three looking!
Carlton punches him out!
And there's one away

It's a sinker, up in the strike zone
Nights hits it deep into the alley
Heilmann is back to the warning track...
To the fence...
He leaps in the air...
Just out of his reach!...
It's in for extra bases...
Harry picks it up quickly
Spins, throws...
Not a strong throw but they have no chance
Nights is at second with a stand-up double
Almost a fine play by Harry Heilmann
Well give him an "A" for effort

Groundball to short
Nights will hold at second base
Tucker is retired on the groundout

Pflaggstettler hits a three hopper
towards Arky Vaughan
Vaughan scoops it and fires
it to first for the out
That's it for FOFC
Here at FOFC Stadium, After 4 innings,
Left Outs has 3 runs, 8 hits and no errors
While FOFC has no runs,
one hit and one error
FOFC has left 1 on base
Left Outs has stranded 8

The batter checks his swing
Here's the appeal
McCovey held up, and draws a walk
Hunter isn't happy at all with that call

Broken bat ground ball to first
Potpie takes it to the bag himself
Score It: 3
That's one away

It is a fastball up high
Vaughan rips it directly at Blade
My goodness! Barrett had to
catch it or get killed
He did the former
much to his family's relief!
Boy, Vaughan really
took the toenails off that one!
McCovey still at second
That's the second out of the inning

Big slow curve...
And it's in there, strike three
That does it for Left Outs
in the top of the 5th

Excellent sinker pitch, outside...
Potpie gets good wood on it anyway
There's no doubt, that one is outta here!!
Potpie circles the bases
As Carlton asks for a new
ball from the umpire
Now Left Outs ahead 3 to 1

Bullock rips a whistling
liner down the line
Bingo! Foxx spears it!
A shot hit right on the screws
but right at the Left Outs third baseman
One down for FOFC
Deacon Palmer is still in
the on-deck circle
and Gerald Gazelle is looking
for a bat in the dugout

Let up pitch grounded through
the middle...
Robinson ranges towards
the bag at second...
Makes a smooth pick up...
Has to make the throw across his body...
Can't get enough on it to beat Palmer
SAFE!...Score it an infield single

Low, ball four...
Gazelle takes first

Bounding ball to third
Foxx grabs it
Throw to second for one
Could be two . . .
Double Play!

And he is . . .
OUT!

Baltimore chop
Into right for a single!

The runner is off with the pitch
Hit and run!
Heilmann only gets a piece of it
Lifted up over the infield...
It should be an easy out...
And it will be Blade making the play
That's two away

He hits a tough grounder to second
Taken by Blade
His throw to first

It darts down and out
as Potpie swings way over it
He was fooled completely

FOFC Manager Update

As I filling out tonights lineup, Howser approaches me.

"You making any changes tonight?"

"Yep."

"Thought so, you sitting Blade down?" he asks

"Yep."

"Figured as much. He started off so good, to bad he's slumped."

"Yep. He'll be fine. I need to give Treacy a shot to play and nows a perfect time. Blade needs to get his mind off of his struggles so I'll let him have a few days off."

As Humphrey Bogart once said
A hotdog at the ballpark is better than
steak at the Ritz

Fastball over the plate
Goslin swings and sends a shot
to deep right-center
Tucker and Pflaggstettler are
converging toward the fence

But there's no throw.
It's scored a wild pitch.

Cochrane swings and lifts one toward left

Having survived the short run of poor pitching and seeing our record at 18 and 2, I decide I'm safe to resume reading the daily paper.

FOFC Manager Update

I wake up following last nights tough loss. It was a difficult one to swallow, but I was pleased they the team kept fighting back. We actually out hit the Left Outs, and followed up their 4 run 5th with our own 4 run inning in the 6th. That was great character in my opinion. I also felt like Nielsen pitched better than his line in the box scores would indicate, but that hanging curve to Foxx was brutal and the free passes before that just killed him.

Tonight Mighty will get a chance to redeem himself following his bad outing 5 games ago.

I fix myself a couple fried egg sandwiches and start reading the morning paper...

FOFC Manager Update

Because we were facing a screwballing lefty, I decided to make a few changes in the lineup. I let Persimmon sit and I put Gazelle in the outfield, because Gazelle is so tough on lefties. I put Terp in at short. Terp is a lefty who hits lefties well so I'm going to give it a shot.

FOFC Manager Update

On the way back into the club house, while the players were on the field shaking hands and high fiving, Bob Hazzle says,"Must be nice to have a laugher on your birthday."

I snap my head around and look at him. Howser who is right behind him starts laughing. "You didn't think we had forgotten did you?" he asks

"Honestly? Yes."

"Hurry up, shower and change. We have reservations at that new Italian joint everyones been talking about." Sal throws in. "I'm even excited about eating there."

I nod, then Howser adds in, "Your wife is meeting us there."

Now I smile and quicken my step.

GAME 23 - Wednesday, April 25th - Radio Broadcast

He walked him, ball four
The lead-off batter gets on here
in the top of the 1st

Frisch sneaks away from the base
Hunter looks Frisch back
He is unable to get his normal lead

Waner pulls one to deep right-center
Tucker is after it
He can't bring it down
Paul is running like a thief
Here's the play at third...
SAFE!
Waner showed his great speed
Triple number 2 of the year for Paul Waner

Change up...
Hornsby hits a high fly ball
Tucker drifting under it...
He makes the catch, but trips...
And he is unable to make the throw
Waner scores on the sac fly
NL Pre WWII with one away
Hunter steps off the mound as
he waits for Chuck Klein to
come to the plate

A slider by Hunter
Klein gets good wood on it...
Pflaggstettler back-pedals quickly...
Up with his glove...
Out!

Off speed pitch on the way...
And Mize watches it go by
for the third strike
That will do it for NL Pre WWII
But they do get 2 runs
right out of the barrel
So NL Pre WWII leads 2 to zip
as FOFC comes to bat

Tucker takes the pitch
STRIKE THREE, is the call
Tucker can't believe it and
says something to the ump
Chalk up a whiff for Marquard

Curveball, inside corner, low...
Swung on...
And lined to left for a base hit
No chance to get that one

Swung on and missed...
Pflaggstettler is down on strikes

It is right down the middle
Potpie takes a wicked swing...
He connects!
That one is really hit...
Klein is racing back toward the fence
He is on the warning track...
But that ball is long gone!!!
That one was out of here in a hurry!
Marquard delivered up a 'prayer ball'...
SMACK DAB in the center of the plate...
with no break on it at all
And Jeeberoni Potpie did not
miss the opportunity
That is home run number 9 on the year
And that also gives him 17 RBI's

Big bender, low and inside...
Swung on...
Line single to Klein in left...
Picking it up in a hurry is Klein...
Hays takes a wide turn...
But stays at first base
as the throw comes in

Hard slider...
And Fouts takes it right down the middle
Strike three called
FOFC is retired...
But they come up with 2 runs to tie it
After 1 inning,
it's all even at 2

Long fly to left
Gazelle has a long run...
He's there and hauls it in
Ott is retired on a fairly deep fly
FOFC gets the first out of the inning

Hartnett swings early on the change
He skies one really high
A Major League pop-up to be sure
Who wants it?
Anybody???
Nights finally lunges forward
to make the grab
He gives his compadres a questioning look
That one almost dropped in there!
Two down
Hunter retires two in a row

Traynor hits a high pop
into short left field
Fouts and Nights sprint
towards the outfield
Here comes Gazelle
Nights puts his glove out...
Makes a super catch in front of Gazelle!!
That's all for NL Pre WWII
After 1 and a half innings
in FOFC this evening,
The score is knotted at 2

Good slider, inside part of the plate
Gazelle gets the bat on it...
Slams a sharp grounder to the right side
Hornsby grabs it...
Throws to first...
OUT!
One down for FOFC
Barrett Blade is still in
the on-deck circle
and Owen Hunter is looking
for a bat in the dugout

There's a ground ball up the middle
It gets by the pitcher
It's headed into center field
OH, Frankie Frisch gets to the ball...
But there won't be a throw
Base hit for Blade

Hunter squares around
He lays a beauty down the third base line
Marquard and Traynor collide
going for the ball
Traynor recovers, picks it up
And fires to first
OUT!!
Credit Owen Hunter with a sacrifice
Two away

Curveball...
STRIKE THREE!
Rube Marquard has 24 this season so far
And that was number 4 today
That's all for the All Stars
After 2 innings in FOFC this evening,
The score is tied at 2

Marquard pulls one to the right side
It's going to scoot on through the infield
Pflaggstettler will retrieve
it without difficulty
He tosses it back in to second
as Marquard retreats to first
after a wide turn

It's the hit and run play
by NL Pre WWII...
Slow ground ball to the mound
Hunter comes up with it
Over to Potpie
Got him!
Score It: 1-3
That's one away

A high pop-up to first
Potpie is under it...
He backpedals
Got it just in fair territory
Fake pump towards second
Marquard gets back to the bag
That's the second out of the inning

Base hit to left for Hornsby
Casey Stingle is windmilling
the runner home...
The throw is coming home...
Marquard is out!

Struck him out on a fastball
Nights goes down swinging
One gone for FOFC in the bottom of the 3rd

It's a wicked breaking ball
Out of the strike zone
Pflaggstettler checks his swing
Hartnett appeals to the first base umpire
Take a seat, Persimmon
Two down
Marquard retires the first
two FOFC batters

Grounded towards first
Mize grabs it
IT'S A RACE TO THE BAG
SAFE!

Soft liner to first
It's into the outfield for a base hit!
Potpie takes third

Hard slider...
Fouts swings from his heels...
He connects!...
There it goes...
Ott is up against the fence
But he has no chance for this shot
IT'S DOWNTOWN!!!
What a blast by Dan

Sinking fastball...
Gazelle swings...
Raps a hard ground ball
right at Frisch...
He snares it easily, throws to first...
Out by a step
That retires the side... but not before
3 runs cross the plate for FOFC
After 3 innings, FOFC on top 5 to 2

Fly ball to left
Gazelle is under it
He makes the grab
With one gone
NL Pre WWII will have Johnny
Mize coming up
A dangerous hitter, no doubt about it

Changeup down low...
Mize makes contact and hits
one out to center
A. J. Tucker is drifting over...
Now he's under it...
Easy out for Hunter
That's the second out of the inning
Time to check the scoreboard

AL Pre WWII is edging AL Post WWII 1 to 0
Dead Ball Era is edging Negro
League II 2 to 1
NL Post WWII slipping by Left Outs 6 to 4
Bench has hit his 2nd homerun
for NL Post WWII
Caribbean leads Turn of Century 3 to 2
Tiant Sr. and Rusie currently dueling
Old Timers leads Late 20th 1 to 0

Owen comes in there with a dipsy-do
And it freezes Ott
He can't get the bat off his shoulder
as he watches it just catch
the outside corner...
STRIKE THREE!
Here we are at the half-way point
in today's ballgame
FOFC leads NL Pre WWII by 3
The All Stars with 5 runs
NL Pre WWII has 2

Grounded towards the sack
Taken by Traynor
Over to first
In time!
Score It: 5-3

STRIKE THREE, CALLED!
That's two away

There's a long drive...
Its' way back there...
Chuck Klein is at the wall...
(Possible HR or Out
Fielding ability: Poor,)
He's jumping for it...
He can't get it!
That's a homerun for A. J. Tucker

Nights swings...
He hits a ground ball down
the left field line
It's by Traynor and into the corner
Nights rounds first...
He will try for two
Klein makes a smooth pick-up
Here's the throw...
Not in time!

Base hit to left for Pflaggstettler
Dick Howser is windmilling
the runner home...
The throw is coming home...
Nights scores!

There's a check swing by Potpie
It's a high pop in foul territory
It looks playable
Gabby Hartnett makes the catch
against the stands
That retires the side
The All Stars score 2 runs in the inning
After 4 innings, FOFC leads 7 to 2

Here's a curveball, up in the zone...
It's juiced to deep center
There goes Tucker after it
Racing hard...
Reaching...
Can't get it...
It was just out of his reach!
He chases it to the fence
Hartnett around first, coasts into second
As the throw comes in late
Score that a two bagger

The pitch is up and in
Looks like a slider
Swung on...
It's a lazy fly ball to the left side
Backpedaling is Nights...
But it's over his head...
And in front of Gazelle...
It's a single and Hartnett
scores from second

Leo Durochure will send up a pinch
hitter for Rube Marquard
Yes, Ross Youngs steps out of the dugout
He will be up there against Hunter

Fastball, a dandy...
Steee Rike THREE!
And Youngs is punched out
One away in the top of the
5th for NL Pre WWII

High and away
Ball four

Waner hits a routine grounder to Nights
He scoops it up, and throws to first
SAFE, the throw pulled Potpie off the bag
Charge Nights with the error
That's error number 1 of the game for FOFC

Screaming liner towards right
Tough chance for Pflaggstettler
It drops in!
Base hit for Hornsby
Traynor scores from third!
Frisch scores from second!
Waner takes third

It's popped up into foul territory
Harry Hays is under it
He makes a nice play on it
Score It: 2
With that putout
Hunter only needs one more out
to get out of this inning
But 3 runs already across for NL Pre WWII

The pitch is way inside
It gets away from Hays
Waner is coming hard
Hays fires to Hunter
And Waner barrels Owen over
He dropped the ball!
Both runners advanced on that wild pitch
Now, FOFC leads 7 to 6

Hard slider...
And Mize takes it right down the middle
Strike three called
That's it for NL Pre WWII
Here at FOFC Stadium, After
4 and a half innings,
FOFC has 7 runs, 10 hits and one error
While NL Pre WWII has 6 runs,
6 hits and no errors
NL Pre WWII has left 2 on base
FOFC has stranded 3
Burleigh Grimes will be coming
on to pitch for NL Pre WWII
Burleigh has appeared in
6 games this season
He has a record of 3-0
in 34 innings
His ERA stands at 3.74

Curve in the dirt... and Hays holds up
Looked like he went around from here
But the man in blue says no
Hartnett appeals to first
Appeal fails
Hays will take first on the walk
That's 1 walk today for Hays

A high bouncer to Mize
He makes a one handed grab
Over to Frisch for one...
Back to Mize for the deuce!
That's two away
Frisch comes over from his shortstop
position to say a few words to Grimes
Gerald Gazelle will be next up...

Hot shot grounded to first
Grimes takes the flip from Mize
Score It: 3-1
That does it for FOFC in
the bottom of the 5th

Sharp breaking curveball...
Ott reaches for it...
Hits a two bouncer right to Fouts...
Grabs it easily...
Fires a bullet to Potpie at first!
Ott is out easily
So one up and one gone

Bounding ball to short
Taken by Nights
Over to Potpie
Got him!
Score It: 6-3

Change up...
Traynor hits a fly ball to right
Pflaggstettler is under it...
This should end the inning...

While NL Pre WWII has 6 runs,
6 hits and no errors

Grounded to the right side
Mize comes up with it
Waves off Grimes...
Runs to the bag
Out!
One more chance for FOFC in
the bottom of the 6th

There's a fly ball to Paul Waner
Waner circles under it...

Out there...
And the throw to first
A tailor made double play

Gerald Gazelle camps under it
He's got it
That ends the inning
After 6 and a half innings,
FOFC leads by 1

It's time for the 7th inning stretch!
Dazzy Vance will be coming on
to pitch for NL Pre WWII
Dazzy has appeared in 6 games this season
He has a record of 1-0
in 11 innings
His ERA stands at .84

Fastball, busted in on the hands
Nights manages to get a piece of it
Bouncing it over the mound
Frisch cuts it off in front of the bag
Rifles a throw to Mize...
And Nights is called out on a close play
One up, one down for FOFC

Pflaggstettler hits a deep
fly ball into the alley
Paul Waner chases it down
But the ball hits the base of the wall
Waner hits the wall and
falls to the ground
Pflaggstettler is into third with a triple
Now they check on Waner
He's okay
That ball hit right at the

It one-hops the fence
Potpie rounds first
Klein has the ball
Potpie motors into second
Two-bagger!
Pflaggstettler scores from third!

Base hit to right for Hays

That is the third out for FOFC here
in the last of the seventh
The attendance has just been
announced at 47039

The pitch is just inside
and Hornsby holds up
Hays points down at the first base umpire
He went around
That is strike three!
One out
Chuck Klein is due up next

It's a quail shot headed
towards the outfield
Blade takes off after it...
Leaps...
And Klein is OUT!
Very impressive range shown on that play!
Barrett is very fine fielder!
Two quick outs for NL Pre WWII
They need baserunners; and now!
At least they have one of
their better hitters
Johnny Mize, up next

Mize rips a hard drive off a hanging curve
That will be in there for extra bases
Mize is around first, heading for two...
Tucker is up with it and
fires it in quickly
Johnny pulls up sharply at second...
A stand-up double for the NL
Pre WWII first baseman
Johnny also ups his hitting

Tucker is waiting on it
Pounds his mitt
A. J. takes it in
That retires the side
NL Pre WWII comes up empty-handed
Here in the top of the 8th
No runs, one hit, no errors
and one man left on base

Fastball, a beauty...
Steee Rike THREE!
One up, one down

Blade checks his swing
WAIT

The throw is going to third...
Blade is safe at third!
And Gonzalez advances to

Here's the play at home...
He's OUT!

Nights drives the ball to
center for extra bases
Gonzalez scores
Dick Howser is waving the runner home...
The throw is coming home...
Tucker scores!
Double for Nights

Looks like they want nothing
to do with Pflaggstettler
Persimmon is dangerous in
situations like this...
He's being put on to set up the force...

He struck him out on a foul tip
Hartnett held on to that heater
in on Potpie's fists
That ends the bottom of the 8th
After 8 innings, the All Stars lead by 4

Ground ball to second
Blade comes up with it
Over to first
He just beat it out

Base hit to left for Traynor
Third base coach Casey Stingle
doesn't want to gamble
Nothing ventured, nothing gained...
Hartnett will stay at second

It's right down the pike!
Strike three looking!
Knowles crossed Terry up that time
One down...
Knowles has to continue to bear down

Frisch laces a hit into the outfield
Persimmon Pflaggstettler picks it up
He fires it to the infield
Frisch holds with a single

The pitch is low
It bounces away from Hays!
He's got it
But there's no throw.
It's scored a wild pitch.

That's hit deep to center
A. J. Tucker giving chase
He grabs it
Nice play!
Traynor is tagging up
He'll make it easily
Score It: 8
FOFC leads 10 to 8 with
two away this inning

The Whiff on the "high cheese"!
And that will do it for NL Pre WWII
FOFC wins 10 to 8
Hunter gets credit for the win
Marquard takes the loss
The hitting star for FOFC
was Jeeberoni Potpie
He was 3 for 5 with a homerun
He also knocked in 3 runs
And that wraps things up
So long from FOFC.

Seems I can't break the pattern of knocking the stuffing out of the ball in one game then following that with an oh-fer.

FOFC Manager Update

I call a team meeting this morning. Funny with a 20 and 3 record this would be needed, but the Chuck Tanner insisted it was necessary. He apparently overheard some people who were upset with their performance.

"Team, I have to say I'm extremely proud of our start. This has exceeded my wildest expectations. I hoped for a good start and the long homestand helped us considerably, but I never dreamed we would be 20 and 3 right now. We've pitched well and hit well for the most part, and those of you who are struggling, hang in there - it's a long season and you'll be needed somewhere down the road.

Things can change rapidly - look at Palmer. He started off slow and now he's hitting right at .300. Blade started out on fire, but now he's in the low .230s. Things change quickly, and I won't be surprised if in a couple weeks Blade is back up around .300 and leading off again.

One more thing, we are about to take a road trip to Japan. If you've never played over there or seen a Japanese baseball game it's very different that what you are used to. It's more like a College Football game, loud, noise makers, constant chanting. It's fun, but you'll need to stay focused and remember we are there to win baseball games. Also it's one long freakin' flight, so do whatever you have to - so you'll be comfortable on it.

Now lets go get our work in before the game, and take care of the Pre-Nationals tonight"

FOFC Manager Update

I finish my talk and head into my office to read the paper. I didn't get to do that this morning, because Tanner "had to talk to me about the team."

I sit down to read and my phone rings.

"Hello?"

"Coach, it's Herb Marketing."

The name means nothing to me, and I'm sure I've never set eyes on this guy but I go along, "Morning Herb, what can I do for you?"

"I just got a call from ESPN." I roll my eyes, knowing what's coming. "They was to do a feature on your teams fast start, and they want to get it in before you head to Japan. So when would you like to talk with them?"

"How's never?"

"Ok, let me rephrase," he says in an aggravated tone. "You will meet with them, and I'll schedule it at a time that is convenient for me is you don't pick a time."

"How soon can they be here." I sigh.

"They are already in town." He answers in a perky voice and I'm having thoughts about smaking this guy.

"Fine, tell them to talk with me after the game. Any idea when they want to air this?"

"Next couple of days." he answers then quickly follows up with "Got go, need to contact them with the time," and he hangs up.

I look at the phone and listen to the dial tone. I place it gently in the receiver because it isn't the phones fault I have to do this. Then I say out loud, "Great here comes Jinx number 2".

In hanging up the phone I nudge the morning paper and remember I still haven't read it, so I open it to the baseball section and...

FOFC - Manager Update

Walking down the tunnel to the clubhouse I go extra slow allowing most of the players to pass. I know my team pretty well, even though I haven't managed the players for long, I know who's going to be last to leave the dugout. I actually have to come to a complete stop for a few minutes before I see the 6' 4" righthander come sulking down the tunnel. I slowly start walking again and in no time the bigger pitcher has caught up to me. Just before we enter the clubhouse, I slap Kronside on the back and say, "Hey kid, let's try to not break any mirrors this time - OK?" I wink at him and head to my office.
