The Story of Joel Robbins (BBCF and PFS dynasty)

I just started tinkering with the ability of BBCF's graduated Seniors (and declared underclassmen) to be imported into the PFS game to continue thier careers. I started my career in a fictional 1920 where all of the 2014 FBS schools are within BBCF as well as 32 NFL teams within PFS. I will be importing all Senior classes into PFS. I won't be doing game-by-game updates, per se, but I will highlight important milestones both in BBCF and PFS as I see them. The first story I want to tell is about QB Joel Robbins.

Joel Robbins was heavily recruited out of Centerville HS located in Centerville, IN. At the time he made his school choice, he was the #6 rated recruit in the country as well as the #2 rated QB. All of the major power schools such as Notre Dame, Ohio State, Michigan, USC, Florida State, Texas, etc were extremely nuts with this kid's ability and heavily recruited him. His HS senior year, He had the following stats:

Comp %: 67.8%
Yards: 4371
TD: 28
INT: 6
Rushing Yds: 92

When it comes time to choose his school, QB Joel Robbins shocks the entire country by going to..........

Yes. The #2 QB in all of the US went to a MAC school. Stunning can't believe to describe the feeling of the recruiting circles when he made his choice. In 1920, the Ohio Bobcats was a decent team (59 Prestige) prior to his arrival going 9-4 and winning the GoDaddy.com Bowl against the Georgia State Panthers 19-6. Well with their new wonder recruit, the Ohio Bobcats may go from a MAC power to an NCAA power. Enjoy the ride.

1921 and 1922 Seasons

QB Joel Robbins was redshirted his Freshman year and was 4th string in 1922 and did not play. The Ohio Bobcats were actually a burgeoning MAC power those years, going 9-4, winning the MAC championship, as well as winning the GoDaddy.Com Bowl (19-13 to the Louisiana-Monroe Warhawks)in 1921. In 1922, the Ohio Bobcats finished 10-3 (but losing the MAC title to the Toledo Rockets)and losing in the Sun Bowl (13-10 to Wake Forest Deacons)

Robbins never complained and worked on his skills, hoping that he would get his shot to start in 1923.

During Spring practices in 1923, QB Joel Robbins was named the starter as a Redshirt Sophomore. He took that job and ran with it. With a vengence.

1923 Season (Redshirt Sophomore)

The NCAA had never seen a QB come out of no where like it did when QB Joel Robbins took the field. The Ohio Bobcats finished the regular season a sparkling 12-0. In the MAC Champioship Game, they beat the Central Michigan Chippewas by a score of 56-17. By the time the postseason slots were chosen, the Ohio Bobcats were the 10th ranked team in the nation and were even awarded a bid in the playoffs! They were the first MAC team to ever receive such an invite.

The accolades poured in for QB Joel Robbins. Here is his stats for the season:

Completions: 304
Attempts: 455
Compl %: 66.8%
Yards: 4648
TD: 43
INT: 9
Rating: 176.2

Rushes: 73
Rush Yards: 484
TD: 2

The man was a wrecking machine! And he was rewarded handsomely for his season. Here are a list of his awards:

1923 MAC Offensive Player of the Year
1923 1st Team All MAC
1923 1st Team All American
1923 Davey O'Brien Award

Last, but not least, QB Joel Robbins was awarded the........

Simply Stunning. From celebrated recruit, to redshirt, to 4th string, to Heisman award winner in his first year starting.

In the 1st round of the playoffs, the Ohio Bobcats travel to the Little Ceasars Pizza Bowl where they will face the mighty Florida Gators. In 1923, the Florida Gators were 9-2 in the regular season and a very tough opponent for a MAC team to face in the playoffs. Though the Ohio Bobcats were able to hang with the Florida Gators, the talent disparity was too great and the Ohio Bobcats lost 35-21. Amazing season both as a team and individually for QB Joel Robbins. He vowed to work even harder in the Spring and promised to lead his team back to the playoff and hopefully a National Championship.

1924 Season (Redshirt Junior)

After last year's explosion, how could it be possible for QB Joel to match or exceed that season for the ages? Well he sure did try! Here is his statline:

Completions: 298
Attempts: 468
Compl %: 63.7%
Yards: 4614
TD: 38
INT: 9
Rating: 173.0

Rushes: 52
Rush Yards: 398
TD: 1

Amazing. Almost a duplicate season. His awards reflected his season:

1924 MAC Offensive Player of the Year (2nd time)
1924 1st Team All MAC (2nd time)
1924 1st Team All American (2nd time)
1924 Davey O'Brien Award (2nd time)

He also wins:

For the first time in history, a player wins the Heisman Trophy twice. He is offically an all-time college great.

The Ohio Bobcats again finish the regular season 11-0. Here is how they buzzsawed their way through the season:

In the MAC Championship game, the Ohio Bobcats played the Northern Illinois Huskies. The game went to overtime, but a fumble returned for a touchdown ended the Bobcats National Championship dreams and the lost 34-28. They did get an invite to the Buffalo Wild Wings Bowl where they destroyed the Oregon State Beavers by the score of 55-17. As usual, QB Joel Robbins was the MVP of that game.

Though he could leave for the NFL Draft as a redshirt Junior, he makes the tough decision to return to school one more year to win that National Title. Being the best QB in the country, he is convinced he can get his team there.

1925 Season (Redshirt Senior)

Since this could possibly turn into a historic season for QB Joel Robbins, we are going to go week to week here to see how his play progresses during the season. We will start with his post-training camp player card:

Solid number across the board. Additionally, Robbins is on the award watch list for the Davey O'Brien Award.

Ohio Bobcats 50
Mississippi State Bulldogs 25

Well the Ohio Bobcats start the season off with a bang by demolishing a very good SEC team. QB Joel Robbins was masterful. His statline was:

Comp: 29
Att: 37
Yards: 403
TD: 5
INT: 0
Rating: 214.3

Carries: 6
Yards: 54
TD: 0

Magnificent performance. Here is a copy of his scoring drives:

I forgot to do this above, but here is Ohio's schedule:

Another destruction at home of a decent team. QB Joel Robbins had a very good game:

Att: 43
Yds: 294
TD: 5
INT: 1
Rating: 158.6

Carries: 4
Yds: 33
TD: 1

The scoring drives:

As with the last game, Robbins is the player of the game. The Ohio Bobcats will most likely go clean until the week 11 matchup with the Arizona State Sun Devils. It will be real interesting to see if any MAC teams present much of a challenge, barring injury.

The Ohio Bobcats had a bye for week 3, so we move on the week 4.

1925 Season (Week 4)

Ohio Bobcats 49
Bowling Green Falcons 12

Another dominant performance for QB Joel Robbins:

Comp: 25
Att: 29
Yds: 426

INT: 2
Rating: 252.7

Carries: 4
Yds: 21

Besides the 2 interceptions, this was a near flawless performance. The scoring drives:

The Ohio Bobcats travel for ther first away game against the (1-2)Buffalo Bulls. Should be another big win.

This team is just a buzz saw. QB Joel Robbins is just beastly:

The Ohio Bobcats are back in Athens, OH to play the (1-4) Central Michigan Chippewas. I smell a 50 point win.

Not quite the 50 point drubbing I predicted, but the Bobcats will take it. Yet again, QB Joel Robbins destroyed everything he saw:

TD: 5
INT: 1
Rating: 196.5

Carries: 6

Seems like the Ohio Bobcats are on cruise control. The week 11 game with Arizona State looms large. Next week, we travel to play the (2-4) Miami (OH) Red Hawks.

Halfway through the season and the Ohio Bobcats are a sparkling 6-0 behind one of the greatest quarterbacks the NCAA has seen in QB Joel Robbins. Last game continued his stellar performances:

Comp: 16
Att: 25
Yds: 306
TD: 3
INT: 0
Rating: 206.4

Carries: 4
Yds: 38
TD: 0

Only downside is he was sacked 4 times and him risking injury kills this teams chances at a national championship. Also, though 6-0, this team is still not ranked. That should change real soon though.

Through week 7, QB Joel Robbins has the following stats:

Comp: 139
Att: 197
Yds: 2124
TD: 26
INT: 0
Ratin4: 200.6

Carries: 27
Yds: 191
TD: 1

Next week, the Ohio Bobcats travel to take on the (4-3) Toledo Rockets. This has the potential to be a tougher game, so we must be careful.

The Ohio Bobcats are currently ranked #1 in offense as well as #3 in defense in the entire NCAA. After all of this dominance, they STILL are not ranked by the coaches or the media. Hmmm.

QB Joel Robbins had his predictably wonderful game:

Comp: 29
Att: 34
Yds: 346

INT: 0
Rating: 219.3

Carries: 2

Ohio Bobcats 41
Akron Zips 10

For the first time this season, the Ohio Bobcats actually trailed in a game. At the end of the 1st quarter, the Akron Zip led 10-7. QB Joel Robbins uncharacteristically threw two interceptions in the first quarter.

Akron would get no closer and the route was on afterwards. here are QB Joel Robbins stats:

Comp: 23
Att: 32
Yds: 333
TD: 3
INT: 2
Rating: 177.7

Carries: 8
Yds: 45
TD: 0

The Bobcats face the (3-3) Kent State Golden Flashes at home next week. This is a classic trap game as the week afterwards, the Bobcats face Arizona State. No let downs can be afforded.

Ohio Bobcats 34
Kent State Golden Flashes 10

Once again the Bobcats get off to a slow 1st quarter start by trailing 7-0. That didn't last long as they routed the Golden Flashes the remainder of the game.

QB Joel Robbins was a tad bit inaccurate this game but still got the job done:

Comp: 23
Att: 43
Yds: 310
TD: 4
INT: 1
Rating: 120.6

Carries: 4
Yds: 16
TD: 0

The Bobcats face the last big challenge of the season when they play the (4-4) Arizona State Sun Devils on the road next week. The Sun Devils are in a kind of down year, but they are still an extremely danger opponent for a MAC team to face on the road.

34-0 at halftime? Are you kidding me? Just a massive win in Arizona. QB Joel Robbins had a monster game:

His best gane of the season. Seems as if the kid wanted to prove himself. To cap off an incredible week, Robbins is a finalist for the Davey O'Brien Award and the Heisman Award!

Next week, the #21 (10-0) Ohio Bobcats go for the undefeated season as they take on the lowly (3-7) Eastern Michigan Eagles. I suspect this game won't present much of a challenge.

Heck of a season by the team and QB Joel Robbins. He took the risk to come back and now he has a chance to lead his team into the postseason.

He was again magnificent against the Eastern Michigan Eagles:

Att: 36
Yds: 384
TD: 4
INT: 0
Rating: 195.7

Carries: 5
Yds: 66

So now we wait to see who we play for the MAC Championship. Currently, The (10-1) Northern Illinois Huskies are on top of the MAC West division, so they will be our opponent in a couple of weeks for the title. They are a pretty strong team with the 3rd ranked offence and 8th ranked defense (we are ranked 1/1) in the NCAA. Should be our greatest test this season.

1925 1st Team All American (3rd Time)
1925 Davey O'Brien Award (3rd Time)

Last but certainly not least, for an unprecedented third time, QB Joel Robbins has been awarded the......

Just incredible.

So this week the now 10th ranked (11-0) Ohio Bobcats take on the (10-1) Northern Illinois Huskies for the MAC Championship. Winner goes to the playoffs. Loser goes to a lesser bowl game. Will Robbins' gamble to return to school pay off? We are about to find out.

Amazing game. To be down 17 points midway through the 3rd quarter and come back to win shows the resiliency of this team. QB Joel Robbins had a very tough game and struggled with his accuracy all game long yet found a way to move the ball when his team needed it. And kudos to the Kicker because without him, the Bobcats lose this game. Here are the stats for Robbins:

Comp: 24
Att: 45
Yds: 278
TD: 1
INT: 1
Rating: 108.1

Carries: 5
Yds: 22
TD: 0

So now the Ohio Bobcats quest for a National Championship begins. Next week, in the 1st round of the playoffs, they travel to Memphis to play in the Liberty Bowl. I personally believe they got hosed in the seeding as they are a 12th seed playing the 5th seed.

The 6th Ranked (12-0) Texas-El Paso Miners are a defensive focused team (2nd ranked in the NCAA) and is led by the Defensive Player of the Year DE Andy Hardy. He had a monster year with 19 sacks and 17 QB hurries. Offensively, they are very good, but not on the Bobcats level (34th in the nation). Gonna be a tough game.

Wow. Domination. It seems like the bigger the game and the stronger the opponent, the better the Bobcats play. QB Joel Robbins is a one man wrecking gang on a mission for a title:

Att: 35

TD: 5
INT: 1
Rating: 210.5

Carries: 3
Yds: 22

Next week, the Bobcats travel to Arizona for the Fiesta Bowl where they will square off against the 4th ranked (12-1) Michigan State Spartans. The Spartans are extremely tough on both sides of the ball (6th OFF/ 7th DEF). Very evenly matched teams.

72 yard Hail Mary with no time left in the 3rd quarter was the difference in the game. Just like the coach drew up. What else can we say about QB Joel Robbins that hasn't been said?

Att: 32
Yds: 343

In the Semifinal round, the Bobcats travel to Miami and the Orange Bowl where they will face the 5th ranked (11-3) Virginia Tech Hokies. Very balanced on both sides of the ball (11th OFF/ 15th DEF), their West Coast offensive system is unlike any the Bobcats have seen this year. The gauntlet continues.

EDITED DUE TO SAVING ERROR:

So this is it. The Ohio Bobcats and QB Joel Robbins have accomplished their goal and will play the 2nd ranked (14-1) Clemson Tigers in the Rose Bowl for the National Championship. The Tigers have a great offense, but only a good defense (19th OFF / 47th DEF). Their best player is HB Robert Townsend, an All-ACC awardee with 1847Yds and 14TDs. It's win or go home.

....the agony of defeat. What. A. Game. It's one thing to be leading by 14 points with 8:37 left in the 4th quarter. It's another to see how they lost the lead and lost the game:

Quote:
Clemson ball, Q4, 1-10-CLEM35 (00:42) 27-34
Jeffrey Garza Lines up for the onside kick! The opponent has their hands team out there. The kick goes 9 yards and bounces around...The Return Team Holds on to it. Thomas Thomas ends up with it on the Clemson 44.

Clemson Timeout!

Ohio ball, Q4, 2-13-CLEM47 (00:25) 34-27
RB M. Walker runs left tackle for 9 yards (SS J. Harper).

Clemson Timeout!

Clemson Timeout! (Two in a row? No TO's left?)

Ohio ball, Q4, 3-4-CLEM38 (00:16) 34-27
The QB takes a knee. (Good choice!)

Ohio ball, Q4, 4-6-CLEM40 (00:07) 34-27
Joe Dixon Punts 40 yards to the end zone, Touchback. (WHY??????)

Clemson ball, Q4, 1-10-CLEM20 (00:01) 27-34
QB G. White completes a 80 yard hook to WR A. Mccormick ****Touchdown!***** CB M. Gill allowed
the big play. (O.M.G.)

Clemson ball, Q4, 1-0-OHIO0 (00:00) 33-34
Jeffrey Garza converts the PAT.

What in the BLAZES was that? What was the coach thinking?!?!? So on to over time. This is what happened next:

Quote:
Clemson ball, OT, 1-10-OHIO25 (-) 34-34
RB R. Townsend runs right guard for 0 yards (FS E. Smith).

Clemson ball, OT, 2-10-OHIO25 (-) 34-34
QB G. White throws an incomplete pass to WR R. Pollack.

Clemson ball, OT, 3-10-OHIO25 (-) 34-34
QB G. White throws an incomplete pass to WR R. Pollack (ILB G. Hansen). ILB G. Hansen broke up the pass.

Clemson ball, OT, 4-10-OHIO25 (-) 34-34
Jeffrey Garza converts the 43 yard field goal.

Ohio ball, OT, 1-10-CLEM25 (-) 34-37
RB M. Walker runs left tackle for -4 yards (FS D. Dunham). OG L. Moore missed a block that hurt the play. (Ugh)

Ohio ball, OT, 2-14-CLEM29 (-) 34-37
RB M. Walker runs left end for -4 yards (FS D. Dunham). OT W. Snider missed a block that hurt the play. (Double Ugh)

Ohio ball, OT, 3-18-CLEM33 (-) 34-37
QB J. Robbins completes a 5 yard in to WR M. Haynes (OOB).

Ohio ball, OT, 4-13-CLEM28 (-) 34-37
Juan Parker misses the 46 yard field goal.

Now my Kicker had been rock solid with a decent 37/49 on field goals throughout the year and had not missed a field goal during the entire playoffs. Until now. To lose the championship. Damn.

Heartbroken does not begin to describe the feelings of QB Joel Robbins. Just tragic to meet all of your goals and to get so close to glory to see bad coaching and bad kicking deny you your destiny. This lose will sting forever. Here are his stats:

Comp: 23
Att: 36
Yds: 341
TD: 3
INT: 0
Rating: 171.0

Carries: 6
Yds: 7
TD: 0

He played a wonderful game and would have thought the coach would have put the game in his hands in OT to get the win. But such is life. Hell of a season. And hell of a career. Next stop? NFL!

Despite all of the accolades and dominance QB Joel Robbins showed in college, the NFL scouts and draft evaluators are not as impressed. He is currently the 9th ranked quarterback in the draft. He will get drafted, but he is going to fight for his career going forward. Below are his physical and mental ratings:

With 10 quarterbacks chosen in the 1st round of the draft, QB Joel Robbins is actually the 19th pick in the draft. The team that choose him is:

Tennessee Titans

This is not a great situation for him as the Titans have drafted 3 other QBs in the last 2 drafts. The starter is an 11 year vet, so if Robbins can stick on the roster, he may be able to battle for a 3rd string job in the future. As is, he is the 4th string QB and most likely headed to the Practice Squad. Bummer.

Very nice gains for QB Joel Robbins post training camp:

Here is his Rating Progression Chart:

Though he is still the 4th string QB, his attributes are very close to his competition. Next training camp, he could compete to move up the roster. We will see.

QB Joel Robbins actually got some 4th quarter playing time:

2/6 10 yds 0TD 0INT

Good way to start a career.

QB Joel Robbins got to play the entire 2nd half. And he struggled mightily:

Comp: 8
Att: 18
Yards: 78
TD: 0
Int: 2

Car: 2
Yards: 22
TD: 0

I like that he is getting his feet wet ahead of other QB's on the roster. Maybe the coaches see something.

Rooting for Robbins to prove the doubters wrong.

I am hoping he has a long, Hall of Fame type career. But him not being drafted high will make that harder. Thanks!

Nice win for the Titans. QB Joel Robbins got to play 3 full quarters (due to an injury to the 2nd string QB) and played very well:

Comp: 14
Att: 17
Yards: 152
TD: 1
Int: 0

Car: 4
Yards: 12
TD: 0

He he showing good incremental progress. Since the Titans released one of the other QBs this week, QB Joel Robbins is now officially the 3rd String QB! He is on his way.

The 2nd string QB is back from injury, so QB Joel Robbins to his 3rd string duties of running the scout team and did not play. Hopefully, this is the last season where he won't play regularly.

Here is a view of the QB's on the roster:

As you can see, as long as he continues to progress, he could be in the mix for a starting job next year, especially since the 11th year vet has been cut. Time will tell.

(6-3) Indianapolis Colts 23
(3-6) Tennessee Titans 14

We fast forward to week 10 because something weird happens. Both the 1st string and 2nd string QBs get injured within 2 minutes of each other. The first stringer sustains a Broken Jaw and the 2nd stringer got a concussion. So QB Joel Robbins is thrown right into the fire and performs admirably:

Comp: 7
Att: 14
Yards: 124
TD: 1
Int: 0

Car: 0
Yards: 0
TD: 0

Though they lost the game, it is good for Robbins to get this experience. And he should be the starter for at least a few games.

QB Joel Robbins got his first NFL start and had some good (accuracy) and some bad (Pick 6).

Comp: 18
Att: 28
Yards: 224
TD: 1
Int: 2

Car: 2
Yards: -4
TD: 0

The hope going forward is Robbins can manage the game until the starter gets back. He needs to play better though. Baby steps.

Very good win against a very tough team. QB Joel Robbins was very instrumental in this victory, despite 2 INTs:

Comp: 27
Att: 44
Yards: 299
TD: 1
Int: 2

Car: 2
Yards: -4
TD: 0

The other 2 QBs are still out with injury, so Robbins continues to get valuable experience,

The game really was not as close as the score indicates as the Titans scored a late touchdown. QB Joel Robbins actually played decently, though he could have been a tad more accurate. Not sure I agree with the focus on the short passing game, but with a rookie QB, I get what the OC is trying to do:

Comp: 17
Att: 29
Yards: 174
TD: 2
Int: 1

Car: 2
Yards: 9
TD: 0

Next week we play at home against the (7-5) San Diego Chargers. With our struggles, not sure I expect much.

The Titans ran all over the Chargers (232 yards rushing). QB Joel Robbins played the role of game manager in this one and was fairly efficient with the football

Comp: 15
Att: 25
Yards: 173
TD: 2
Int: 1

Car: 2
Yards: 23
TD: 0

Robbins is really not playing badly at all. The OC is putting him a position to succeed with high percentage passes, and he is taking advantage of it, for the most part. The hope is he will be a bit more careful with the ball in the future and lower the interceptions.

The Titans travel to Florida to take on the (1-12) Jacksonville Jaguars. Looks as if the 2nd string QB will be healthy enough to start next week, but we shall see. Robbins has not been terrible, so maybe the coaching staff will ride the 'hot' hand.

As I suspected, QB Joel Robbins did not start or play in another game during the season. The QBs in front of him got healthy and the Titans finished the season 7-9.

On the season, here are Robbins' stats:

To be a contributor going forward, his INT% and Sack% are going to have to come way down. The hope is, with time, he will learn. Not a bad season at all. Hope he builds on it!

1927 Season (Training Camp)

The Tennessee Titans had 4 young QBs on their roster last year, all around the same talent level. The Titans could not play them all (and also drafted 2 more QBs), so something had to give. QB Joel Robbins could see the writing on the wall and called his agent. He needed a better situation.

His agent called up the Titan GM and told him that Robbins was not happy with 6 QBs on the roster and wanted a chance to go elsewhere. The GM granted his wish and actually released him when no trade offers where forthcoming. So now Robbins is a free agent.

He is not on the street long though as he is immediately signed by the.........

This is a much better situation as he is immediately installed as the 2nd string QB. Though their is a rookie QB in front of him, they are close in ability and Robbins could pass the rookie with solid training camps.

Here is a look at the depth chart:

After training camp, Robbins kind of plateaued (52 overall). He is going to need to work harder in the off season. His lack of endurance is killing him. Here is his player card:

Despite the score, QB Joel Robbins had some good moments, in 3 quarters of actions. He still needs to work on his accuracy and stop turning the ball over (his interception was a pick 6 at their own 10 yard line):

Comp: 11
Att: 19
Yards: 144
TD: 1
Int: 1

Car: 0
Yards: 0
TD: 0

QB Joel Robbins is officially struggling. His stats below prove it, plus he was sacked twice and fumbled the ball. He needs to do better:

Comp: 11
Att: 19
Yards: 124
TD: 1
Int: 1

Car: 2
Yards: 13
TD: 0

Another game of struggling for QB Joel Robbins. Though he did not turn the ball over, Robbins was not accurate.

Comp: 16
Att: 31
Yards: 142
TD: 1
Int: 0

Car: 2
Yards: 12

Now this is more like it. Vintage QB Joel Robbins. This was his best game as a pro. Though I doubt he beat out the 1st string QB (who struggled mightily as well), He could be in a good position as the year moves forward.

Tough preseason for Robbins. That'll just toughen up his resolve.

So the Pittsburgh Steelers are a glorious 0-4 behind the rookie QB (53.4% Comp, 4 TD, 4 INT, 64.5 QB rating). Looks like it is going to be a long season. To add insult to injury, the Steelers signed another QB before Week 1 to compete with QB Joel Robbins for 2nd string. The hits keep on coming.

QB Joel Robbins actually got some garbage time in this blowout win:

TD: 0

Gotta impress whenever he can, just in case another team out there may want a look at him.

Do to an injury to the starter from a vicious sack, QB Joel Robbins Got into the game and played well:

Int: 0

Car: 2
Yards: 1
TD: 0

I don't like that he was not able to lead his team to any scoring drive in the 2nd half, especially since they had the ball almost 36 minutes Time of Possession. But baby steps.

QB Joel Robbins did not play from Week 7-14. Week 15 was a different story:

As you can see, the Steelers did not win a game with the between week 6-14, The starter has been atrocious, I can add. Against the Jets, the starter got a concussion, allowing Robbins to come in for relief:

Comp: 4
Att: 10
Yards: 34
TD: 0
Int: 1

Car: 0
Yards: 0
TD: 0

Luckily, the Steelers won. Robbins must do better when given the chance.
