Gibbs Tosses No-Hitter Against Balzac
Friday, April 23rd, 2010: "This is one of the best moments of my life," Matt Gibbs said. "You never think that's going to happen -- a no-hitter."

He made those comments after he held the Ticklers hitless in the Havana 4-0 victory at Banana Sluggers Ballpark.

"We simply couldn't get any wood on the ball," said the Balzac manager, when asked about his epic performance. "Gibbs was brilliant out there. He certainly had our number."

Gibbs was more humble about his historic feat and told BNN reporters that he was "just happy to get the win for the club."

He faced only 28 batters in the no-hit gem, struck out 9 and walked 1.

That was the first no-hitter since Bill Clerk in 2007!

Number 400 for McFarlen
Sunday, April 25th, 2010: A big sigh of relief erupted from Brent McFarlen after he hit his 400th career homer. The Ann Arbor first baseman said, "I'm glad it's over...now I can go back to just playing baseball."

It was quite a day for McFarlen. He got his name in the league record books with 1 hit, 2 RBI, scored 1 run and his team, the Ann Arbor Wolverines beat the New York Legends 10-9.

McFarlen knew it when he hit it. He raised his hands in the air, then ran the bases like a high school player, clapping and grinning.

He told reporters in the postgame interview, "I was acting goofy running the bases... but it was my 400th home run."

"It was great," his manager said. "He stood there and watched it...we all did. You just felt it was coming...you just had a sense he would hit it soon. He has been having a lot of good at-bats. It was great to get it out of the way."

During his career McFarlen is hitting .274 with a total of 400 home runs.

RL Selects Rookie Star of the Month
Saturday, May 1st, 2010: Youngster António Salgado emerged as the latest Republic League Rookie of the Month today. The young man from Maricopa deserved the honor, batting .253 with 1 home run and 7 runs batted in. Is the month of April a harbinger of things to come or just a fluke? We'll find out someday, but for now, we'll just let Salgado enjoy the limelight.

Moreno Rips HR Number 400
Monday, May 3rd, 2010: Plantana defeated St Cloud today 13-7 and took some of the joy out of Fernando Moreno's 400th career home run.

"I just wanted to get a good swing on the ball all day," Moreno said. "And I did."

Despite the loss, it was a good game for the 33-year-old Raindrops left fielder. He had 2 hits, scored 1 run and had 2 RBI.

The Pirates manager said, "You could see he was aggressive up there. The worst thing we did was throw him a strike. It probably would have been better if threw the ball outside of the strike zone every time he came to the plate because he seemed like he was in a hurry to get it over with."

To date Moreno has a .263 career batting average and has totaled 400 home runs.

Great Day for Morales, Hits for Cycle
Saturday, May 15th, 2010: 4 hits is a great day for any player, but when they come in four different denominations, that's a cycle -- a rarity by baseball's standards. Miguel Morales had a single, double, triple and home run for the St Louis Hops and led them to a 3-2 decision over St Cloud at Fog Bowl with 1 run scored and 2 RBI.

Miguel Morales singled in the 2nd, hit a solo-shot off Yusufu Maideyi in the 4th, tripled in the 6th, flied out in the 7th and hit an RBI double in the 10th.

So far this year Morales is hitting .342 with 3 home runs.

Cory West Gets Hit Number 2500
Sunday, May 30th, 2010: Chicago's Cory West got the standing ovation -- but the St Louis Hops got the win.
It was a special day for him at The Brewery. A day when West notched hit #2500 of his career. The fans went wild when he did. Even the Hops fans applauded.

The Cardinals catcher went 1-3 in a losing cause as St Louis spoiled the party with the 4-2 victory.
In the postgame interview, a downhearted West told the media, "We lost -- It's not about individual accomplishments -- we lost."

When pressed further, he admitted his pride in reaching the 2500-hit mark, "A lot of great players never get there. I'm proud, but I would be happier if we had won."

In a career spanning 2257 games, West has batted .293 with 2500 hits, 331 home runs, 1537 RBIs, and 1443 runs scored.

Tuesday, June 1st, 2010: Juan Blanco earned May's Rookie of the Month honors in the Republic League for last month's performance. The boyish Maricopa catcher might be wet behind the ears, but he's proving that he has what it takes to play at this level.

Blanco hit .218 with 6 home runs, 13 RBIs and 12 runs scored this past month on his way to winning the award.

This year Blanco is batting .232 with 42 hits, 7 home runs, 21 RBIs, 7 walks, .268 OBP and has scored 18 runs.

#300 for Martínez
Wednesday, June 16th, 2010: He has done it!
Jesús Martínez has reached the 300 home run mark. He did it today, but the Portland Axemen still dropped the game to the Spring Lions by the score of 8-5.

"Number 300 was hard to come by. I think the pressure was getting to me a little bit. I got a call a few days ago from a couple of guys that have been through this and they just said, 'Keep going, have some fun. Just be you.' I think that helped me a little bit, having those guys make a call to me and try to settle some of the nerves down."

On his historic day Martínez was 2-3 with 2 runs batted in and 2 runs scored.

In his 1796-game career Martínez has hit .306 with 2100 hits, 301 home runs, and 1202 RBIs and has scored 1481 runs.

Martínez Defeats Ticklers For #200
Tuesday, June 22nd, 2010: St Louis ace Joaquín Martínez solidified his place in league history with his 200th career victory today at The Brewery. Martínez and the Hops bested Balzac 7-4. He checked the Ticklers on 8 hits in 7 innings and finished the day with 5 strikeouts and no walks.

"I've worked hard for this day," Martínez said. "Sometimes I didn't think it would happen. Most of the time it seemed so far off. Now it's here. It's like a dream!"

Martínez's lifetime won-lost record is 200 wins and 191 losses with a 3.87 ERA.

Leslie Gets 300th Home Run
Thursday, June 24th, 2010: Nathan Leslie circled the bases and raised his arm in triumph. He had finally hit his 300th home run. It was a homer for a lot of people: himself; his teammates past and present; his former managers and coaches; and especially his family, who sat near the plate cheering his every at-bat during the past few games.

Leslie spoke with BNN and said, "I knew number 300 would come sooner or later. I had to keep reminding myself, 'Relax, relax, just let it happen, let it happen.' And it finally did."

His milestone homer came in the New York Legends 3-2 win over the Spring Lions. Leslie went 1 for 4 in the game, scored 1 run, and batted in 2.

Leslie's career batting average stands at .296, and he has 300 home runs.

That's pretty cool - haven't seen that type of news before about being a prospective FA.

Otero Named Top RL Hurler
Thursday, July 1st, 2010: Paco Otero has been around the league long enough to know that relievers are often overlooked. That has never stopped him from doing what he does best -- and he did it extremely well in June and stole away with the Republic League Pitcher of the Month award.

The Surf bullpen ace collected no saves and 10 strikeouts in 20.1 innings, holding the opposition to a .224 average and posting a 0.89 ERA and a 6-0 record.

For the season Otero is 10-and-1 with no saves and a 3.02 ERA. He has given up 58 hits in 53.2 innings with 39 strikeouts.

CL's #1 Starter is Colón
Thursday, July 1st, 2010: As José Colón hoisted up the Continental League Pitcher of the Month trophy for June, rumors have already begun to swirl about whether he will leave Chicago once his contract is up at the end of the season.

Colón put pressure on the Cardinals to keep him around by posting a 4-1 record and an ERA of 2.89 over 43.2 innings last month. He also rolled up 29 strikeouts, increasing his value both to Chicago and to every other team in the league.

This year Colón has registered 7 wins and 1 loss in 17 starts with a 3.21 ERA while registering 68 strikeouts and 40 walks in 101 innings.

Leonard Hines Winner in June
Thursday, July 1st, 2010: Leonard Hines relied on a .381 average to capture the Republic League Batter of the Month trophy. He had a good June, going 43 for 113.

He finished with 4 home runs and 26 RBIs, scored 25 runs and had a .449 on-base percentage.

This year Hines has batted at a .274 pace with 87 hits, 10 home runs, 37 RBIs and scored 62 times.

St Louis's Huerta Chosen CL Batter of the Month
Thursday, July 1st, 2010: The Continental League Batter of the Month has been picked for June and the honor goes to the St Louis Hops Luis Huerta.

He compiled a .361 batting average with 39 hits and 12 home runs, along with 27 RBIs and 31 runs scored.

To date, Huerta has collected 101 hits for a .332 average. He has posted 25 home runs, scored 73 runs and driven in 70 runs.

Maricopa Center Fielder Best RL Rookie
Thursday, July 1st, 2010: António Salgado was toddling around on his tricycle when some of the guys he's playing against were in their prime, but the 25-year-old center fielder definitely knows how to get to first, second or beyond. Today he was chosen June's Republic League Rookie of the Month for his remarkable month of hitting.

In 27 games Salgado batted .275 for Maricopa, slapping 33 hits in 120 at-bats with no home runs, drove in 10 runs and scored 16 times.

This season Salgado is swinging the bat at a .241 rate with 82 hits in 340 at-bats. To date he has hit 5 home runs, scored 43 runs and driven in 25.

Palma Voted June's Top Rookie
Thursday, July 1st, 2010: Jesús Palma is still a bit shy, but then, who could blame the newest Continental League Rookie of the Month honoree? He hasn't been around the league long enough to fully know the ropes yet, despite the fact that he's putting up veteran-like numbers.

In June the Plantana hitter tagged opposing pitching for a .301 average with 28 hits, 5 home runs and 11 RBIs.

This season Palma is batting .249 with 67 hits, 11 home runs, 30 RBIs, .367 OBP and has scored 55 runs.

Reyes Slugs 300th Home Run
Friday, July 2nd, 2010: "I wasn't trying to hit a homer. I just wanted to make contact."
That's what Jaime Reyes told reporters after he made baseball history today at Chicago Stadium. The prolific slugger belted home run #300 in the Chicago Cardinals 6-1 victory over the Plantana Pirates.

The standout third baseman collected 1 hit in 4 at-bats with 1 RBI and 1 run scored.

"I guess this puts me in baseball's elite," said Reyes. "I don't feel any different. I probably should, but I don't. Still, it is a nice achievement. I did get a little excited, didn't I?"

Reyes has played in 1540 games and is hitting .277 lifetime with 1053 RBIs, 1580 hits, 355 doubles, 23 triples and 300 home runs. He has scored 893 times and stolen 6 bases.

Bob Wood doubled in the 2nd, singled in the 3rd, hit a two-run triple in the 5th, struck out in the 7th and hit a solo-shot off Abera Zouabri in the 9th.

Wood has a .287 average and a .376 on-base percentage for the year. He has picked up 83 hits, 14 home runs and driven in 58 runs.

Wells Earns RL's Best Pitcher Honor
Sunday, August 1st, 2010: Sherwood Wells's been around the league long enough to appreciate the honor he received today. After going 5-0 in July, the 34-year-old New York hurler has been named Republic League Pitcher of the Month.

He fanned 37 in 39 innings, logged an ERA of 1.38 and allowed opponents to hit .203 against him.

This season Wells has compiled a 10-5 mark with a 3.83 ERA in 21 starts.

Hops Hurler Named CL's #1 Starter
Sunday, August 1st, 2010: Joaquín Martínez nailed down July's Continental League Pitcher of the Month award today, adding pressure on St Louis to get a deal done before the 37-year-old becomes a free agent.

Martínez seems unfazed by the talk. "We get a deal done or we don't," he told reporters, "I'm not worrying about next year. Worrying about next year isn't what wins awards, you know?"

He fashioned a 4-0 record, reeled off 23 strikeouts, worked 36.1 innings and held batters to a .193 average for the month as he posted a 1.73 ERA.

His record this year is 10-6 in 25 starts and Martínez has a 2.89 ERA.

RL's Premier Starter is Pérez
Wednesday, September 1st, 2010: The Republic League scribes have selected August's Pitcher of the Month and have awarded the honor to Martín Pérez of Cumberland. He was outstanding on the hill last month and has the numbers to prove it -- a 5-1 record.

The Defenders star performer made 6 starts with a 1.47 ERA and surrendered 27 hits in 43 innings. He struck out 24 and walked 13.

Thus far this season Pérez has posted a 10-11 record, started 27 games, struck out 83 batters in 145.2 innings and compiled a 4.76 ERA.

Estrada Gets August's Top Pitcher Trophy
Wednesday, September 1st, 2010: Ignacio Estrada took home the Continental League Pitcher of the Month honors in August. After all these years playing ball, the 39-year-old veteran still enjoys the game as though he'd just broken camp for the first time a month ago. He's a bit older now with a few more aches and pains, but the old man has reason to celebrate, having gone 5-0 for Chicago last month and claiming the Pitcher of the Month award.

He tacked up a 2.41 ERA in his 6 starts, tossing 41 innings and striking out 22.

In 33 starts this season Estrada has fashioned a 12-7 record and a 3.91 ERA.
