2500th Hit for Ruíz
Sunday, April 20th, 2070: What a day for Raúl Ruíz. The 39-year-old Waikiki first baseman reached the 2500-hit mark today and the Beach Boys whipped the Spring Lions 7-6.

Ruíz told reporters, "It's good to finally get it. The closer you get to 2500, the harder it is to get there. Now the pressure is off and I can go back to just playing ball."

He went 1 for 4 in the game to reach the milestone.

Ruíz has a lifetime average of .320, has played in 2328 games, and has collected 420 home runs and 1590 RBIs.

Reliever Valdéz Top RL Pitcher in April
Thursday, May 1st, 2070: "The kid had it all working last month," a veteran teammate told reporters. "He keeps up those kind of numbers, we might have to start inviting him out with us after the games."

Alberto Valdéz put together a very solid month to take home the Republic League's top pitching honor in April.

The 24-year-old reliever threw like a veteran. In 11 relief appearances he raked in 6 saves and 16 strikeouts in 12.1 innings as he put together his 2-0 record and 0.00 ERA.

CL's Best Starter is Gómez
Thursday, May 1st, 2070: Jesús Gómez took a much-deserved turn in the spotlight earlier today as he accepted the Continental League Pitcher of the Month award for April.

The 26-year-old Pirates starter is a relative newcomer to the league, but nonetheless racked up an impressive 4-1 won-lost record in 5 starts. This month he fanned 28 batters in 33 innings and compiled a 2.18 ERA.

RL's Top Hitter Selected
Thursday, May 1st, 2070: Raúl Ríos battered Republic League pitchers all April and wound up taking home the Batter of the Month Award.

"I've been around FOOL-X long enough to know you really have to work hard day in and day out to be able to put up this kind of consistency," the 28-year-old Ríos told reporters. "I put in a lot of work, even on the days I might not take the field, and it's always nice when everything comes together for me like it did this last month."

In 22 games, Ríos hit .348 with 4 home runs, 17 RBIs and scored 17 runs.

Dexter Reeves is April's #1 Hitter in CL
Thursday, May 1st, 2070: Free agent-to-be Dexter Reeves has inflated his asking price over the past 30 days by winning the Continental League Batter of the Month.

In April, the 29-year-old Washington right fielder hit .377 with 7 home runs and 24 RBIs.

If he keeps putting numbers like that up, he could be hauling in a big wad of cash at this time next year.

Republic League Names Rookie of Month
Thursday, May 1st, 2070: Dennis Mack was toddling around on his tricycle when some of the guys he's playing against were in their prime, but the 22-year-old right fielder definitely knows how to get to first, second or beyond. Today he was chosen April's Republic League Rookie of the Month for his remarkable month of hitting.

In 19 games Mack batted .345 for Spring, slapping 19 hits in 55 at-bats with 4 home runs, drove in 11 runs and scored 12 times.

CL Selects Rookie Star of the Month

Thursday, May 1st, 2070: Raúl Meléndez is still a bit shy, but then, who could blame the newest Continental League Rookie of the Month honoree? He hasn't been around the league long enough to fully know the ropes yet, despite the fact that he's putting up veteran-like numbers.

In April the St Cloud hitter tagged opposing pitching for a .247 average with 19 hits, 7 home runs and 11 RBIs.

St-Martin Slams Milestone Homer
Tuesday, June 17th, 2070: It was a great day for Jacob St-Martin, but not a good one for his Spring Lions. The 33-year-old right fielder reached a personal milestone with his 300th career homer, but it wasn't enough to beat the Portland Axemen, who came away with a 4-3 victory. St-Martin finished the day with 3 hits, 3 runs batted in and 2 runs scored.

"Well, I've conceded the fact that you can't will yourself to hit a home run," he said. "I tried hard for the last few days. It was getting to be embarrassing with the crowd standing up every time I came to the plate."

St-Martin has played in 1494 games and posted a lifetime .255 average. He has 1465 hits, 247 doubles, 24 triples and 300 homers. In addition he has driven in 999 runs and scored 794 times.

RL's #1 Starter is Torres
Tuesday, July 1st, 2070: As Carlos Torres hoisted up the Republic League Pitcher of the Month trophy for June, rumors have already begun to swirl about whether he will leave New York once his contract is up at the end of the season.

Torres put pressure on the Legends to keep him around by posting a 5-2 record and an ERA of 2.34 over 42.1 innings last month. He also rolled up 41 strikeouts, increasing his value both to New York and to every other team in the league.

This season Torres has worked 118 innings with 102 strikeouts en route to a 8-8 record and a 3.36 ERA.

St Louis Starter Named CL's Top Pitcher
Tuesday, July 1st, 2070: Brendan Emerson had an outstanding June -- so good that the Continental League presented him with the Pitcher of the Month Award earlier today.

"There's no way to know where the Hops would be without Emerson," one fan is quoted as saying.

In June Emerson dominated the competition, running up a 5-0 record, a 0.97 ERA and 25 strikeouts in 37 innings.

This year Emerson has 10 wins and no losses and a 3.22 ERA.

The veteran center fielder hit for a .284 batting average and collected 9 home runs, 30 RBIs and 28 runs scored.

Mack Selected June's Top RL Rookie
Tuesday, July 1st, 2070: Youngster Dennis Mack emerged as the latest Republic League Rookie of the Month today. The young man from Spring deserved the honor, batting .296 with 4 home runs and 12 runs batted in. Is the month of June a harbinger of things to come or just a fluke? We'll find out someday, but for now, we'll just let Mack enjoy the limelight.

A look at his season totals shows Mack with 10 home runs, .287 BA, .333 OBP, 28 RBIs and 32 runs scored.

Valdéz RL Choice for Best Pitcher
Friday, August 1st, 2070: A money pitcher -- the guy to bet on, when the chips are down. That's a very good description of a bullpen specialist. And one of the best in the league is Alberto Valdéz of the Spring Lions. He was outstanding in July and was named the Pitcher of the Month in the Republic League.

In July, Spring's star reliever held the opposition to a .197 average and put up 6 saves and 21 strikeouts in 17.1 innings with a 3-1 mark and a 0.52 ERA.

To date this year Valdéz has 27 saves with a 5-1 mark and 0.66 ERA.

Bishops Edwards Named CL's Best Pitcher
Friday, August 1st, 2070: Ron Edwards has been around the league long enough to know that relievers are often overlooked. That has never stopped him from doing what he does best -- and he did it extremely well in July and stole away with the Continental League Pitcher of the Month award.

The Bishops bullpen ace collected 8 saves and 11 strikeouts in 13 innings, holding the opposition to a .255 average and posting a 2.08 ERA and a 2-1 record.

Crunching the numbers on Edwards for the year, he has made 45 relief appearances, recorded 25 saves and compiled a 6-2 won-lost mark and 3.38 ERA. In pitching 53.1 innings, he has totaled 61 strikeouts and 8 walks.

CL Announces Outstanding Batter Award
Friday, August 1st, 2070: Beach balls were coming in at Leonard Neely in July and he banged, bashed and blasted them all over the park, putting up a .430 batting average and hauling in the Continental League Batter of the Month trophy.

The 30-year-old Plantana second baseman collected 46 hits last month in 27 games. He put up 7 home runs, 21 RBIs and 34 runs scored. Neely also drew 20 walks and compiled a .519 on-base percentage.

Reliever Ward Chosen August's Best in RL
Monday, September 1st, 2070: Las Vegas's Norman Ward hated to see August end. It was one of the single greatest months the reliever has posted, and the 26-year-old reliever did so well that he garnered enough votes for the Republic League Pitcher of the Month trophy.

Ward held the opposition to a .130 batting average in 13 relief appearances. He worked 14 innings, collected 9 saves, sat down 15 on strikes and posted a 1-0 record and a 0.00 ERA.

This year Las Vegas reliever Ward has made 59 relief appearances and has 32 saves. His record is 5-3 with 74 strikeouts in 63.1 innings and a 2.42 ERA.

August's #1 Starter Named in CL
Monday, September 1st, 2070: The top pitcher this past month in the Continental League was Nate Cameron of the Washington Freedom. He really bewildered league hitters, finishing August with an excellent 4-1 record and 1.87 ERA.

The Freedom hurler made 5 starts and surrendered 27 hits in 33.2 innings. He struck out 35 and walked 4.

Cameron has made 26 starts so far this year and put up a 12-10 won-lost record with a 4.69 ERA. In 151.2 innings he has allowed 193 hits, walked 29 and struck out 113.

Rookie Herrera Named Best in August
Monday, September 1st, 2070: Gerardo Herrera proved to be one of the Republic League's preeminent rookies last month, putting up some sensational numbers to take the Rookie of the Month trophy.

In August the right fielder for Portland had a .288 average, stroked 34 hits, 4 home runs, drove in 15 runs and drew 5 walks for a .317 OBP.

Looking at his season stats, Herrera has compiled a .240 batting average and a .285 on-base percentage, while hitting 14 home runs and driving in 66 runs.

Molina Voted August's #1 Newcomer
Monday, September 1st, 2070: A rookie, Rafael Molina is turning heads around the Continental League, especially since he just netted August's Rookie of the Month trophy.

The Oshawa catcher batted .373 last month and collected 28 hits, 8 home runs, 21 RBIs and 12 runs scored.

This could be the first of many such awards if he continues this torrid hitting, but he's definitely put himself in a good position to claim the Kien-lung Teng Award later this year.

This season Molina is hitting at a .304 pace with 28 home runs, 75 RBIs and has scored 58 times.

London Hurler Captures 200th Victory
Sunday, September 7th, 2070: Pedro Ríos of the London Bishops nailed down his 200th career victory with a 5-1 win over the St Cloud Raindrops today at Fog Bowl. Ríos, 35, fired 9 strikeouts over 7 innings of work. He gave up 1 run, 2 walks and allowed 3 hits.

"I feel great," Ríos said afterward. "I try not to get caught up in the moment. It's hard with so much press coverage these days, but I tune all that out when I go out there and pitch."

His career stats show that Ríos has racked up 200 victories and 133 defeats and has recorded an ERA of 3.49. He also has fanned 2800 batters in 2885 innings and allowed 2661 hits.

Pirates Hinojosa Nails Down 300-th Save
Monday, September 8th, 2070: "I tried to approach this game like it was just another day, but when I walked out there on the mound, it was different." It certainly was different. The Plantana star reliever José Hinojosa was about to try for his milestone 300-th career save and put his name in the record book. "I'm supposed to have ice water in my veins, but not today. It felt like my first day on the mound in my rookie season." But as he has endless times before, Hinojosa rose to the occasion and disposed of the Oshawa Mullets and saved the Pirates 8-5 victory for his historic 300-th save, allowing no runs and 1 hit in 1 innings of work.

Lifetime Hinojosa has converted 300 saves with a 49-33 mark and a 1.81 ERA.

93 wins and we miss out. Sigh.

Congrats to the playoff teams, and especially Havana for taking care of business in the final series. We absolutely choked this season.
