1970 Miami Dolphins Empty Cupboard (FOF2K4)

I love the Miami Dolphins. They're my favorite football team.

I also love historical football dynasties and a challenge.

Unfortunately, in 1970, the Dolphins are a great team.

Solution? Empty cupboard. Cut everyone and start off from scratch with rookie free agents or other dreck.

Note: I'm not going to be including house rules on this. I suck at FOF to begin with without making it harder on myself.

I'm going after a championship!

A $10 mill salary cap this year and I already have $7 mill in lost cap room for next season after cutting everyone. Wow! Good thing I have the salary cap set to increase 30 every year, huh?

So I sign a passel of scrubs to be my team for this wretched new year and establish the starting lineup. Naturally the print to file function isn't working again. Jim, can you please just have the damn thing print directly to notepad like you do your box scores and game logs? Please? This is really getting irritating.

Okay, in the interests of figuring out HTF to fix this damn thing, here's a couple screenshots:

After trying to print from FOF

Any ideas?

When you print, does it ask you to save it as a file? When it does, name it WHATEVER.txt and then it should appear in your FOF main folder.

Works for me, anyway.

Yes, you have to change it in the drop down to print to file silly.

That's what I put in after I hit Print in FOF2K4.

It's already set up as Print to File when I set up the Printer. Generic/Text is the only thing that shows up in the Driver drop-down box.

So I put that in and nope, nothing. Not on the desktop, not in the main FOF folder, nothing turns up in search and when I go to look at the printer, it's still that blank thing shown in the earlier screenshot

Hmmm. Try posting in the main forum--someone there might know what the problem is.

I have no answers for you, but I do highly anticipate the next Wyoming Cowboys update (hint, hint).

Thanks guys, especially to Joe who solved the problem!

As for Wyoming, CraigSca, I'm sure I'll get back to it someday. I just don't know when.

Ahem! So here are your empty cupboard Dolphins!

Code:
Player # Pos Start Exp Current Estimate Future Estimate Cntrct Jackson, Jon 3 QB 1 8 28 1 yr. Pepper, Bart 12 QB QB 1 8 25 1 yr. Stuart, Wayne 19 QB 1 8 29 1 yr.

A collection of sucky signal callers. Pepper gets the start because he has the coolest name and the highest Avoid INTs rating.

Code:
Gonzalez, Winston 24 RB 1 21 28 1 yr. Raines, Ty 33 RB RB 1 18 30 1 yr. Conlan, Morris 46 RB 1 22 28 1 yr.

When it Raines, it pours. I'm going to try building what little offense we have this year around Raines. Gonzalez is actually a mildly acceptable third down back.

Code:
Carlisle, Donny 20 FB 1 17 36 1 yr. Jamison, Edward 29 FB 1 18 38 1 yr. Tesson, Byron 44 FB FB 1 21 37 1 yr.

I don't know why I have 3 FBs on my roster. Tesson's the best of this batch and my passing down back.

Code:
Warren, Nate 80 TE 1 14 32 1 yr. Fitzgerald, Brant 84 TE 1 11 33 1 yr. Giddens, Ryan 88 TE TE 1 14 28 1 yr.

Yeah, sucky tight ends. Nuff said.

Code:
Seidman, Oliver 85 FL FL 1 15 32 1 yr. Woodling, Glenn 86 FL 1 14 26 1 yr. Burmeister, Lewis 81 SE SE 1 12 25 1 yr. Powell, Everett 82 SE 1 14 24 1 yr.

These guys remind me a lot of my HFL Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Bad receivers in starting spots. See why I'm trying to build around Raines?

Code:
Drake, Mo 50 C 1 10 23 1 yr. Anthony, Matt 52 C C 1 12 29 1 yr. McDaniel, T.J. 58 C 1 9 28 1 yr.

I really am a masochist. We need help everywhere.

Code:
Rayburn, Geoff 62 LG 1 14 37 1 yr. Farrar, Harvey 66 LG LG 1 15 33 1 yr. Freeman, Jay 60 RG RG 1 13 29 1 yr.

Does anyone on this team even have a potential above 40?

Code:
Mickelson, Rod 63 LT LT 1 10 28 1 yr. Ofodile, Stephen 71 LT 1 11 30 1 yr. Bruce, Norbert 78 RT RT 1 11 26 1 yr.

Not here!

Code:
Kaplan, Leroy 1 P 1 25 35 1 yr. Lantz, Maurice 2 K 1 16 40 1 yr.

Eureka! Someone above 20 points in Current and with 40 potential! Naturally they're not the same person and of course they're our punter and kicker respectively, but we take what we can get at this point.

Code:
Nyren, Juan 92 LDE LDE 1 18 28 1 yr. Southwell, Emmitt 93 LDE 1 14 27 1 yr. Dias, Marcus 73 RDE RDE 1 16 28 1 yr. Moss, J.T. 79 RDE 1 17 23 1 yr. Marsden, Junior 76 LDT 1 17 26 1 yr. Rasmussen, Oscar 77 LDT LDT 1 18 31 1 yr. Drake, Jared 72 RDT 1 18 33 1 yr. Whitfield, Butch 97 RDT RDT 1 19 34 1 yr.

Whitfield practically qualifies as a stud on this shoddy team.

Code:
Briles, Byron 53 MLB MLB 1 10 30 1 yr. Sinclair, Scottie 56 MLB 1 13 31 1 yr. Plummer, Dominic 98 MLB 1 14 26 1 yr. McIntyre, Allen 90 SLB SLB 1 15 27 1 yr. Holmes, Neil 59 WLB WLB 1 13 24 1 yr.

Umm yeah. I need more OLBs because right now my SLB and WLB are each other's backups. But for the first season, who cares?

Code:
Prior, Ronald 25 LCB LCB 1 10 26 1 yr. Warren, Tyrus 47 LCB 1 10 28 1 yr. Fisk, Seth 37 RCB RCB 1 11 27 1 yr. Neasman, Michael 41 RCB 1 10 28 1 yr. Fiset, Jamal 21 SS 1 15 37 1 yr. Covington, Isaac 34 SS SS 1 14 40 1 yr. Lyons, J.B. 42 FS FS 1 15 41 1 yr.

Lyons and Covington look quite promising, relative to everyone else.

After this it's on to the preseason!

We go 3-1 in preseason thanks to exceptional accuracy by our QBs and fine defensive play that astounds everyone, especially me.

The regular season will tell a different tale, I fear.

Game 1 VS Tennessee

Line: Miami (-2)

Why we're favoured over the Titans, I don't know, but we not only win, we cover the spread in shutting them out 14-0. RB Ty Raines rushes for 85 yards and a TD to power our offense and the D shuts Tennessee down, thanks in large part to a couple of key interceptions. Maybe the 100 degree weather had something to do with it.

Week 2 AT Cincinnati (1-0)

Line: Cincinnati -13

The Bengals are right to be favoured so hugely. We were damn lucky to win our opening game and it should be all downhill from here en route to a #1 overall pick. Surprisingly we manage to get points on the board, but our defense can't stop them on any drive and we go down 27-10. WLB Neil Holmes does record 10 tackles however.

If your running Windows XP, you might want to look in C:\Documents and Settings\User Login Name\ where "User Login Name" is replaced by whatever your user login name is. That is the folder where my "print to file" files go.

It turns out you're right. Thanks. Between you and Joe, I've finally figured out what the heck is going on.

Pittsburgh (1-1) VS Miami (1-1)

Line: Pittsburgh -7

Ahh yes, the Steelers and the Dolphins, the two great teams of the 70s. But this is the Empty Cupboard 'Phins playing the blossoming Steelers dynasty so I suspect we'll lose by far more than that TD.

We lose by exactly that TD, falling 17-10. We're playing far above the ratings of our crappy team and it's been shocking me. 99 degrees and stormy was the weather forecast, kind of like here where it's in the 60s and rainy. RB Ty Raines is really starting to look like a serviceable back. Is he explosive? No, but he piles up enough yardage that I think he could catch on as a solid backup on a lot of teams if he keeps it up.

We pick up our first significant injuries in this game. C Matt Anthony is questionable and will probably play as the backup next game, giving T.J. McDaniel his first start. Also, SLB Allen McIntyre is out for approximately three weeks. Thus, we sign WLB Matt Hazeltine, the 14 year old veteran recently released by the New York Giants after not having played a down all season long for them. We also sign WLB Jim Sniadecki, a rookie free agent, to become the top backup at both LB spots while McIntyre is out.

Are these guys on your roster actual players from 1970? I did recognize the Bengals players names, but non of the phins.

Oh, on the brighter side. When your players get injured, your backups are pretty much just as good as the starters.

They're in the 1970 roster file, so whoever created it (3ric, I think?) would have to answer the question as to if they were actual players or not. I can tell you that he had all the Dolphins right, though I'll admit to quibbling with some of the ratings.

Sadly enough, Hazeltine is better than McIntyre and will stay the starter even when Allen returns. That's how bad this squad is.

I think it's a mix of actual players and fictional players. For the most part, the fictional players are roster fodder, which is why you don't recognize any Dolphins players.

Congrats on the week one win... that's more than I had all season in my inaugural empty cupboard year with the Chargers and I had a full draft class and undrafted rookies to work with!

Looks like you outplayed PIT and got unlucky, too. You outgained them play for play and while you had 1 interception, they were lucky to lose none of their 3 fumbles.

Thanks for clearing that up, Jeff and thanks for the compliment!

Good point on Pittsburgh. I'm starting to see how chemistry plays a key role, because I didn't sign anyone that had the potential for a personality conflict with anyone else.

Week 4
New York Jets (1-1) VS Miami (1-2)

Line: New York (-7)

Matt Hazeltine transistioned nearly flawlessly to SLB, only taking a tiny hit to his actuals. He'll remain the starter there for the rest of the year, even after McIntyre comes back. We're probably going to get our tails kicked in this game. Broadway Joe is that good, our team that bad.

Shockingly, we once again fall by a TD. SLB Matt Hazeltine has a brilliant Dolphins debut, recording 8 tackles an assist to go with an interception. Two missed field goals from our kicker really hurt.

In new injury news RDT Jared Drake separates his shoulder and is out 5 weeks. Also, LG Harvey Farrar tears his elbow ligament and needs surgery. He's done for the season. Drake doesn't hurt that much, since he was only a backup anyway, but losing Farrar means our already weak line loses one of its starters.

Farrar goes on IR and LG Gary Bugenhagen, a third-year player cut by the New England Patriots after appearing in two games as a backup, signs on to become the new starter. LDT Cary Rose, a rookie FA, also joins us, taking over the RDT backup spot while Drake's out. He switches over to RDT with no change in current or potential ratings.

The Patsies have decent starters but their depth is horrible. We should be able to make it at least competitive in my opinion.

Only we don't and get shut out 24-0 in the single worst team performance of the year. It's all-around ugly, though SLB Matt Hazeltine records his second straight game of 8 tackles and an assist.

This is looking like a major asskicking as our archrivals (They'll always be our archrivals to me after the 80s and 90s of Kelly vs. Marino IRL) have been playing fantastically.

An asskicking it is as we once more get shut out. One major problem is that QB Brad Peppers averages maybe 3 or 4 yards per attempt and that's just not going to cut it. At least we're getting an idea of what positions to most look heavily at in the draft and free agency next year.

I really should just speed through the season and put up one honking post so I don't lose readers by updating too fast and too much, but damn it, I'm a game by game person.

Good news: We score first.
Bad news: We sucked after that.

RDT Butch Whitfield is questionable for four weeks with a sprained thumb, but his main backup has been extremely slow to heal so he'll stay in there.

I'm going to speed through the next game and then write up a midseason report.

Miami (1-6) AT New York Jets (3-3) (-8)

We'll lose.

And we do, but oh what a heartbreaker as we narrowly fall, 20-17, with the Jets kicking two field goals in the last five minutes to beat us. Way to fall on your asses out there, D.

RB Ty Raines has his first fumble of the year. One fumble in 8 games? Yeah, I'd take that. SLB Matt Hazeltine rings up 10 tackles and an assist, but he's supersdeded by MLB Byron Briles, who comes out of nowhere to record 11 tackles and 3 assists.

FS J.B. Lyons sprains his knee ligament and will miss next week's game against Arizona. In his place, we sign rookie free agent FS Juan Perry, who becomes a Band-Aid and, ironically enough, a defensive backfield leader.

Pretty ugly all around, I'd say. QB Bart Pepper really has no business being at the helm of this team. I still think RB Ty Raines can be a serviceable back, at least as a second or third choice, if not an eventual legit starter. FL Oliver Siedman shows flashes of talent as a receiver and will probably stick around.

On defense, MLB Byron Briles has been a huge surprise and may turn out a lot better than anticipated. LDT Oscar Ramussen is doing better than I thought as well. In development news, SS Isaac Covington is the big gainer through the halfway mark of the season, leaping from 14 to 19. +5 points in half a season suggests to me he learns and improves fast and will be worth keeping around.

Everything else on this team needs significant work, but I'm already starting to get ideas for who will be re-signed for sure and who are certain cuts.

Certain Re-Signs
RB Ty Raines
FL Oliver Siedman
SS Isaac Covington

Certain Cuts
K Maurice Lantz

Arizona (6-1) (-11) VS Miami (1-7)

The Cards boast a beastly defense that will eat us alive.

We fall 27-6. Hey, at least we didn't get shut out. RCB Isaac Covington, SLB Matt Hazeltine, and MLB Byron Briles continue to put up solid tackle numbers on defense.

So my first class got cancelled, leaving me free to update! Yay!

LDE Juan Nyren, SLB Allen McIntyre, and FS J.B. Lyons all return to the active roster this week. Nyren and McIntyre have both lost their starting jobs, but Lyons keeps his.

Miami (1-8) AT Seattle (2-7) (-1)

Look at this. A winnable game! Can we pull it off? It's possible, perhaps.

Oh so close. Oh so -damn- close as they kick a FG in the fourth quarter to win 16-14. LG Gary Bugenhagen is making a very strong case for being re-signed as he gets 3 key run blocks and C Matt Anthony betters him by one for 4 KRBs.

This may not be the 49ers of the gloried 80s, but they're still a competitive team and we'll likely get stomped.

28-0? Yeah that's a pummeling. No noteworthy performances to speak of anywhere.

Buffalo (8-3) (-8) VS Miami (1-10)

A Bills win here coupled with a Jets loss and Buffalo officially clinches the division.

We do our part in going down 45-0. SS Isaac Covington does record 8 tackles, though.

Miami (1-11) AT Denver (9-3) (-12)

We're playing some good teams this year.

Every now and again, we give them a challenge, like in this game where we lose by a single point, 17-16. ARGH! The Broncos scored on a 42 yard pass with 0:44 left in the game! Now I know how the Arizona Cardinals feel.

Buffalo's officially clinched the division and will be the AFC East's lone representative in the playoffs, so the rest of us are playing for pride at this point.

New England (4-9) (-2) VS Miami (1-12)

After last week's nailbiter in Denver, I'd say we have a real shot at winning this one.

And of course, the D picks this time to lay a goose egg and we get destroyed 37-14, ruining RB Ty Raines's career day of 20 rushes for 93 yards and a TD. Raines did have his third fumble of the year, his second in as many games, so it's something to keep an eye on.

Thanks. It's 35 right now, but I'll bump it up to 50 next season as injuries are coming in a little *too* low.

So the RL Dolphins lost and I took the mockery and tauntings I had coming from the Packers fans in the house aaand I got tricked into greatly embarassing myself about 20 minutes ago. I need a pick me up.

Cleveland (0-14) VS Miami (1-13) (-1)

This qualifies as good a chance as any! I'd really like a win. Why are the Browns 0-14, you ask? Because their defense, o-line, and receivers are all terrible and Jim Brown is a 10 year veteran.

Naturally RB Jim "Old Man" Brown rushes for 84 yards and a Dolphins-slaying 2 TDs to give Cleveland their first win of the year by a 19-14 scoreline. On a good note, RB Ty Raines rushes for a career best 95 yards and SS Isaac Covington has a nice all-around game with 6 tackles, 3 assists, and an INT.

We get a couple minor knocks, but nothing worth keeping anyone out of the final game of the year, which I'm posting here so my next post can be postseason and offseason.

Miami (1-14) AT Baltimore (14-1) (-17)

In this universe, they're the Ravens because I forgot to change the name file so that they're the Colts. My bad. I like the Ravens nickname better anyway, really.

We manage a field goal and the Ravens claw us 33-3, about what I expected. MLB Byron Briles busts out with 9 tackles and 2 assists to continue his surprising rookie campaign.

SS Isaac Covington is looking pretty studly with those numbers, I think. LDT Oscar Rasmussen may be better than advertised and I still believe RB Ty Raines can play in this league.

Here's a chart detailing the change in current ability from the start of the season to the end of the year for the starters who I have beginning numbers for. The () has the original number first, the current number second.

Code:
Starting Lineup Changes Current QB Bart Pepper +4 (8/12) RB Ty Raines +1 (18/19) FB Byron Tesson +7 (21/28) TE Ryan Giddens +3 (14/17) FL Oliver Seidman +3 (15/18) SE Lewis Burmeister +1 (12/14) C Matt Anthony +5 (12/17) RG Jay Freeman +2 (13/15) LT Rod Mickelson +4 (10/14) RT Nobert Bruce +2 (11/13) RDE Marcus Dias +1 (16/17) LDT Oscar Rasmussen +3 (18/21) RDT Butch Whitfield +2 (19/21) MLB Byron Briles +4 (10/14) WLB Neil Holmes +1 (13/14) LCB Ronald Prior +3 (10/13) RCB Seth Fisk +7 (11/18) SS Isaac Covington +7 (14/21) FS J.B. Lyons +7 (15/22) K Maurice Lantz +4 (16/20) P Leroy Kaplan +5 (25/30)

Looking at this list, I see several players to re-sign based on the boosts they received and their end-season play:

FB Byron Tesson
C Matt Anthony
SS Isaac Covington
FS J.B. Lyons
P Leroy Kaplan

RCB Seth Fisk probably gets a resign based on his leap in ability. The others except for RB Ty Raines are uncertainties.

And I'm going to have to do the rest of the offseason tomorrow because I've sneezed 20 times in the past 3 minutes and really should take some medicine and go to bed as soon as I can.

#1 pick is always sweet. Make sure to show us who's available in the draft.

Since it's a no-rules dynasty, you can exploit the AI with draft pick trades if you don't feel too dirty:

Trade 1(1) and 6(1) for 1(2), 2(2), 3(2), 4(2) and 5(2). Then 1(2) and 5(2) for 1(3), 2(3), 3(3), 4(3). You may be able to pick up a couple more picks even going down to 1(4).

Of course, I find it unfun, but you did say no rules.

There's not a guarantee that I'll have the #1 overall pick.

1970 1-15 Teams:
Carolina Panthers
Cleveland Browns
Jacksonville Jaguars
Miami Dolphins

If I do trade down however (Normally I don't), what I'll do is use the Draft Value Rankings chart that I used when we were discussing trade possibilites in the HFL, so I don't hose the AI.

I keep getting confused about the players on the teams but then I remember that this is the "real" teams and the ones in HFL are made up. So Joe Namath actually does play for the Jets, not the Colts etc etc.

With the AI running resignings most rosters will be pretty much random within 3 years or so anyway.

Kind of funny how MP historical leagues can sometimes cause us to misremember who played for what teams now and again.

The beautiful thing about these dynasties, when there is no plot, character, or style to be concerned with, is that even when I am sick as I am now, the story may still go on.

And so I sip my tea and dive into FOF2K4 anew, doing my best to forget the day's miseries (Murphy has declared his law).

Staff hiring time.

My scout's okay, but I see an expired deal scout out there that I like better, so I make a move to grab him. Likewise the entire rest of my staff. Unfortunately, they all diss me for other teams.

I'm so disgusted I say to hell with it and keep my current staff. Continuity is a good thing, right?

On to free agency. Oh by the way, salary cap is automatically set to raise 10% each year and the value at the end is the total value for the entire length of the contract

Immediate Re-signs
RB Ty Raines: 3 years, $180k
FB Byron Tesson: 3 years, $170k
FL Oliver Siedman: 3 years, $190k
P Leroy Kaplan: 3 years, $180k
LDT Oscar Rasmussen: 2 years, $110k
MLB Byron Briles: 2 years, $110k
RCB Seth Fisk: 2 years, $110k
SS Isaac Covington: 2 years, $110k
SS Jamal Fiset: 2 years, $110k
FS J.B. Lyons: 3 years, $180k
FS Juan Perry: 2 years, $110k

You'll notice there's some players who haven't been re-signed, like SLB Matt Hazeltine, LG Gary Bugenhagen, and C Matt Anthony. In Hazeltine's case, he wants to test the market, but we're still in the mix. Bugenhagen and Anthony both want bonuses I don't think they really deserve. Maybe Bugenhagen, but I'm prepared to wait him out.

The nice thing about the immediate re-signs is that my safeties for the next couple years are set. Yeah I could go out and seek upgrades, but that particular unit gets on very well together thanks to leader FS Juan Perry, so I might as well keep the cohesion going.

In free agency, I go hunting for a good, young QB I hope to be able to build around. I'm willing to shell out bonus money here. I'm also looking for other young guys who maybe didn't get shots with their previous teams, who'd take less money for the chance to play more often.

Week 1 Offers:
SLB Matt Hazeltine
QB Sam Wyche
RB Doug Cunningham
C Wayne Mulligan
RG Jim Skaggs
RG Pat Matson
LG Mike Schnitker
RT Art Laster
MLB Ken Criter
SILB Dick Butkus
SLB Chuck Hurston
RCB John Charles
LCB Carl Lockhart
LCB Fred Summers

As you can see from the list, LT, WR, DE, DT, WLB, K are all areas we're going to be needing to draft in, even if we get all these guys.

In the signings below, former teams are in (). A * denotes they were a starter for their old team.

Week 1 Signings
RG Jim Skaggs: 1 year, $100k (PHI)
LCB Carl Lockhart: 3 years, $390k (NYJ)

Lockhart is always one of the guys I sign in these dynasties for some reason. Probably because he usually plays well for me and comes at a relatively modest price.

Week 2 Signings:
SILB Dick Butkus: 3 years, $330k (HOU*)
SLB Chuck Hurston: 3 years, $340k (KC)

Our linebacking corps gets a major shot in the arm. In this game, Butkus is 35/63, both as a SILB and as a MLB after I convert him, so he's by no means guaranteed to be a Hall of Famer. Yes, I've X-Factor on because it's more fun that way.

Week 3 Signings:
QB Sam Wyche: 3 years, $660k (CIN*)
C Wayne Mulligan: 3 years, $640k (ARI)
LG Mike Schnitker: 2 years, $240k (DEN)

Granted, I probably overpaid for Wyche, but at least he gets some guys to protect him, which is good because he sucks at avoiding the rush and needs a good line in front of him. Wonder if he'll coach the Bengals in this universe, too.

Week 4 Signings:
None

Week 5 Signings:
RB Doug Cunningham: 3 years, $300k (SF)

Sorry, Ty, but you just got booted to second string. Cunningham is a nice all-around back who was a backup for the 49ers. He'll get a chance to start in Miami and with his intangibles, it's quite possible he'll be a Dolphin for the rest of his career.

Week 6 Signings:
RG Pat Matson: 2 years, $240k (CIN*)
MLB Ken Criter: 3 years, $330k (DEN)

Wyche gets one of his linemen to come with him in Matson, so that'll help continuity perhaps. Criter joins his fellow former Bronco Schnitker and it'll be a fascinating battle between him and Butkus for the starting MLB job.

Week 7 Signings:
RT Art Laster: 3 years, $390k (DET)
SLB Matt Hazeltine: 2 years, $210k (TB*)

We welcome back Hazeltine, who may or may not regain his starting spot. Laster plays for his third team in two years as he was traded from Buffalo to Detroit during the 1970 season. He'll probably hold down the RT spot for a while.

Week 8 Signings:
LG Randy Beisler: 2 years, $180k (SF)
LCB Fred Summers: 3 years, $240k (CLE*)
RCB John Charles: 3 years, $330k (MIN*)

Beisler isn't exciting, but hey he's a former teammate of Cunningham's. Summers is a good all-around corner. Not exceptional by any means, but just a solid guy. Charles plays man-to-man and that's all she wrote.

Does the AI automatically adjust the gameplan based on the players you have? I really don't want to have to go through and set every single flipping gameplan chart if I can help it.

In any case, after that we have 26 players signed and we're still $2 mill under the cap, even with the $7 mill in lost cap room because of the mass cutting at the beginning of the dynasty.

Draft comes next, but I'll probably do that tomorrow.

Holy crap!

This is the most stacked draft at RB I've ever seen. The X-factor really boosted an already rich 1970 RB Draft Pool.

To wit:

Top 5 Running Backs
John Riggins: 72/80
Leo Hayden: 54/75
Joe Moore: 57/70
Leon Burns: 50/66
Joe Profit: 40/55

To top it off, we have the #1 overall pick after all. Two other top tier picks are FL Otto Stowe (49/64) and S Ike Thomas (46/73). Stowe is really the guy I most want to grab, but I don't see him as being worthy of the #1 overall selection. So I trade down to #4, where, using an NFL Draft Value Chart, I ship the #1 overall selection to the Carolina Panthers for their #4 and their next year's 1st round pick.

They promptly draft FL Otto Stowe. Bastards!

1971 NFL Draft 1st round
1. WR Otto Stowe - Carolina Panthers
2. G Steven Lawson - Cleveland Browns
3. WR Elmo Wright - Houston Texans

Well damn. The other player I was looking at just got snatched ahead of me. John Riggins is a superlative RB, there's no doubt about that, but I have the RB I want in Doug Cunningham. There's one more allegedly top tier WR in Ken Burrow, but his combine numbers scream bust, as his 40 time and agility are both in the middle or towards the tail end of his position.

So I take a closer look and realize that WR Dwight Harrison has the fastest 40 time in his class at 4.33 (the next closest is 4.48) and he has a 6.80 agility time, also tops in his position group. His bars look pretty good, he has 75 Vol and 27 Sol. Easy choice, even though he's only 28/66 right now.

4. WR Dwight Harrison - Miami Dolphins
5. RB John Riggins - Tennessee Titans

The Titans and their fans have to be thrilled that they got the top guy in the class at #5. Wonky FOF draft logic at its finest.

6. ILB Leland Laxton - Tampa Bay Buccaneers
7. S Ike Thomas - Seattle Seahawks
8. WR Ken Burrow - Philadelphia Eagles
9. DE Aaron Patterson - New York Jets (After trade with Patriots)
10. WR Juan Hall - Minnesota Vikings
11. DT Bob Bell - Washington Redskins
12. S Norm Thompson - Oakland Raiders
13. ILB Archie Winslett - New York Jets
14. S Tim Anderson - Houston Texans
15. ILB Claude Armistead - Indianapolis Colts
16. CB Jack Tatum - San Francisco 49ers
17. OLB Isiah Robinson - San Diego Chargers
18. WR Cotton Speyrer - Pittsburgh Steelers
19. T Brett Willey - Atlanta Falcons
20. T Brant Harvey - New York Giants
21. CB Leonard Dunlap - Cincinnati Bengals
22. CB Charles Ford - Houston Texans
23. CB Kenyon Greene - Detroit Lions
24. T Dan Dierdorf - Denver Broncos

And the Broncos steal the guy I wanted to draft at 2(1). Dierdorf, usually the darling of this class when I've run historical dynasties before, is 20/44 in this one.

25. DE Patrick Kosier - Dallas Cowboys
26. DE Rex Bronson - Kansas City Chiefs
27. S Morris Ackerman - St. Louis Rams
28. T Dwayne Lyon - Chicago Bears
29. S Mark Carline - Arizona Cardinals
30. G Lionel Brunsvold - Baltimore Ravens
31. DE Bill Atessis - Buffalo Bills
32. S Tito Craig - Green Bay Packers

Four of the top five RBs are still on the board. That's insane, but it also testifies to just how established most teams are at RB. It ticks me off that so many DEs went in the first round because that's a need area.

Second Round Thoughts

WLB is a an area of need and there's a guy near the top of the board with a low Vol score and decent combine numbers to go with superlative bars, so I draft OLB Brett Barlow with the 1st pick in the second round.

Third Round Thoughts

All four of those RBs are still there. If one of them drops down to the 4th or 5th round, I may have to pick them up. I notice one of my favorite players to pick up in this draft, WR Kendall Joyner, is still available. Since I need a flanker, I grab him.

Fourth Round Thoughts

Somehow I'm picking after 3(30). I look in the draft order window and see XXX by 31 and 32. Okay that means they didn't get the pick, I know that much, but why? Does anyone know why no pick is made? Five picks were XXX'ed out for the third round, in fact.

Oh yeah, the four RBs are naturally still there. At this point, virtually everyone at my positions of real need who's worth more than a late-round pick is gone, so I take the best of them, Leo Hayden, an extremely well-developed speedburner back who posts a 4.32 40.

Fifth Round Thoughts

Is anyone surprised that the three remaining RBs are still on the board? No? Good, because they are. We had the first QB go to the New York Jets at 4(13) in Dan Pastorini. He's real raw (9 Current), but he has sexy bars and is probably the smartest player in the draft, so he may well reach his 68 Potential.

I think I see a sleeper in DE Josh Williamson, who has 91 Vol, 27 Sol, a 4.92 40, 24 Reps, and a 7.49 agility time and thusly snatch him up. I really wish I had 3ric's formula figured out so that I could run it for the draft classes as they come up, but on the other hand, that might be too time consuming for single player.

Sixth Round Thoughts

Lala no RBs taken again. I pick up RT John Moore in hopes that he's a boomer. I'll probably convert him to LT, just so I can say I've got a LT. With his 35 Sol, he should be smart enough to pick it up.

Seventh Round Thoughts

Those three RBs aren't going to be drafted. Bah humbug, I say. We have other needs but Archie Manning is a combine beast and has 99 Vol to boot. Can you say drafted? Yes you can! Welcome to our hopeful QB of the future and may your best son play for us as well some day! (Hint: It's not Eli)

Code:
1971 Miami Dolphins Draft 1(4) SE Dwight Harrison 28/66 Texas A&M 2(1) WLB Brett Barlow 21/68 LSU 3(1) FL Kendall Joyner 21/52 Utah 4(1) RB Leo Hayden 54/75 Ohio State 5(1) RDE Josh Williamson 12/35 UCLA 6(1) RT John Moore 10/22 South Florida 7(1) QB Archie Manning 15/51 Mississippi

Except for not getting the LT I wanted (Denver we're looking at you) or the D-line help we really needed, I'm quite pleased with how this draft turned out from this standpoint. We'll just have to see how they look after training camp.

RB Joe Moore went at 7(22) to the Saints, where he stands a pretty good chance at breaking camp as the starter.

We got a B for our draft and those hateful Broncos got the only A+. Pfft. Whatever.

Late free agency/training camp/exhibition I'll do later, maybe tomorrow.

Only because of the name. By the scouting, a 7th round selection is perfectly acceptable in my opinion, as 15 current is pretty darn low. The bigger problem I have is with those two RBs being URFAs.

All my draft picks except the top two sign at the start of late free agency. SE Dwight Harrison and WLB Brett Barlow want the shorter deal of course.

John Moore transitions to LT quite smoothly, something I'm more than thankful for.

Late Free Agency Week 1 Offers
QB Karl Sweetan
FB Tom Woodeschick
TE Kris Brady
TE Courtney Norris
TE Juan Rodier
FL Ben Hawkins
SE Lance Oskenberg
C Curtis Knight
RDE Carl Eller
RDE Aaron Brown
RDE Gerry Philbin
LDT Walter Johnson
NT Jim Hunt
RDT Fred Miller
WLB Larry Grantham
WLB Bob Bruggers

Week 1 Signings
QB Karl Sweetan: 2 years, $140k (STL)
RDT Fred Miller: 3 years, $300k (IND*)

Sweetan is a sweet, sweet holder and will hold down the backup job until Manning matures. Miller has a realistic shot at starting as he did for the Colts.

Week 1 Competition:
NT Jim Hunt - IND, MIA, PHI, SF, STL
RDE Carl Eller - MIA, NYK

I'll wait and see if Hunt defects anywhere, but he's not really worth jacking money up for. Eller, on the other hand, is, so I throw in some more dough to try and entice him to Miami.

Week 2 Signings
TE Courtney Norris: 1 year, $30k (UDRFA)
FL Ben Hawkins: 1 year, $70k (SFA)
SE Lance Oskenberg: 1 year, $30k (UDRFA)

A bunch of filler at receiving spots, a veteran and two undrafted rookie free agents.

Week 2 Losses:
RDE Carl Eller - 2 years, $180k to CIN (MIN*)

The Bengals repay me stealing a couple of their players by convincing Eller they can win. Ugh.

Week 2 Competition
NT Jim Hunt - CIN, DEN, IND, MIA, PHI, SFO, STL, TBY

Competition's heating up, but the bastard will probably hie it for the Bengals.

Week 3 Signings:
FB Tom Woodeshick: 3 years, $290k (PHI)
TE Kris Brady: 1 year, $30k (UDRFA)
RDE Aaron Brown: 3 years, $360k (KC)
LDT Walter Johnson: 2 years, $140k (CLE*)
WLB Larry Grantham: 2 years, $200k (NYG)
WLB Bob Bruggers: 2 years, $140k (SD*)

Some superb pickups for the D here. Woodeschick might also start at FB.

Week 3 Losses:
NT Jim Hunt - 3 years, $300k (DEN) (NE*)

Oh well.

Week 4 Signings:
TE Juan Rodier: 1 year, $40k (SFA)

A body street guy at TE.

Week 6 Signings:
C Curt Knight: 1 year, $50k (WAS)
RDE Gerry Philbin: 1 year, $70k (SFO)

Decent depth guys and that ends my free agency signings for now. SE Dwight Harrison and WLB Brett Barlow sign before training camp, giving us 47 players going into the preseason.

Code:
1971 Miami Dolphins Rookies Post Training Camp 1(4) SE Dwight Harrison 30/64 (+2/-2) 2(1) WLB Brett Barlow 24/62 (+3/-6) 3(1) FL Kendall Joyner 23/53 (+2/+1) 4(1) RB Leo Hayden 55/72 (+1/-3) 5(1) RDE Josh Williamson 14/33 (+2/-2) 6(1) LT John Moore 11/26 (+1/+4) 7(1) QB Archie Manning 18/52 (+3/+1)

Barlow's looking like a small bust, but Joyner, Moore, and Manning I'm all cautiously optimistic about. Moore in particular seems to have taken splendidly to his new position and I look forward to seeing how he progresses. He'll start at LT, if only because he's the only one we have there and I don't feel like digging through free agency to find someone else.

Unless it's a mentor. That's an option.

Three worse rated QBs went in round 1 in HFL this year... a 15/51 in the last round is ridic.

You see all sorts of wacky stuff with the 1970 roster file though--the talent pool is ridiculously inflated.

You're experiencing some of the many flaws in the game AI.

In the draft, linesmen will go like hotcakes (particularly defensive linesmen) while top-notch QBs and RBs can fall all the way down to the 7th round.

The xxx means that the team was over cap at the start of the year and, consequently, lost a draft pick.

Oh and Otto Stowe is over-valued. His route running means that he catches the ball far less often then you'd like. Certainly not worth the first overall pick.

JeffW: But the draft class was also a lot weaker too, relative to the 1971 one. So it all balances out.

Narcizo: True and I'd noticed that before when I've done historical dynasties. I guess it's just much more pronounced to me now since joining the HFL and seeing how that draft goes. Thanks for the explanation of the XXX! It makes more sense now!

I suddenly realize that I forgot to sign or draft a K, so I sign Tyrell Kressbach, last seen with the Chargers.

Code:
Manning, Archie 5 QB 1 18 52 3 yrs Sweetan, Karl 11 QB 6 37 37 2 yrs Wyche, Sam 14 QB QB 5 48 50 3 yrs

Manning's our QB of the future, but for right now, Wyche will be the man. Sweetan, as noted before, will backup and serve as the best holder on the team.

Code:
Raines, Ty 33 RB 2 19 27 3 yrs Cunningham, Doug 39 RB RB 5 53 53 3 yrs Hayden, Leo 40 RB 1 55 72 4 yrs Woodeshick, Tom 36 FB FB 8 54 58 3 yrs Tesson, Byron 44 FB 2 28 36 3 yrs

A fierce training camp battle ends in Cunningham barely beating back the rookie Hayden for the starting spot. Once Hayden improves on his ball security, he'll take over, but for now he'll be the #2 RB and the third and short option. Woodeshick not only becomes the new FB, he becomes the passing back as well. Nice pickup I got in him.

Code:
Brady, Kris 6 TE TE 1 28 43 1 yr. Rodier, Juan 7 TE 2 14 28 1 yr. Norris, Courtney 16 TE 1 23 38 1 yr. Hawkins, Ben 83 FL FL 6 29 29 1 yr. Seidman, Oliver 85 FL 2 20 33 3 yrs Joyner, Kendall 89 FL 1 23 53 4 yrs Oksenberg, Lance 17 SE 1 23 42 1 yr. Harrison, Dwight 87 SE SE 1 30 64 5 yrs

An undrafted rookie free agent wins the battle of the TEs. At flanker, Hawkins holds off Joyner, but it's quite close and Kendall might win next season. Seidman, although not part of the passing game, returns as our PR option. Harrison nearly loses the SE job to rookie free agent Oksenberg and retains it largely on the basis of his being our first pick.

Code:
Knight, Curt 4 C 3 37 41 1 yr. Mulligan, Wayne 54 C C 3 70 78 3 yrs Beisler, Randy 61 LG 5 35 38 2 yrs Schnitker, Mike 64 LG LG 3 34 58 2 yrs Matson, Pat 67 RG 6 37 39 2 yrs Skaggs, Jim 69 RG RG 8 41 41 1 yr. Moore, John 68 LT LT 1 11 26 3 yrs Laster, Art 70 RT RT 2 45 46 3 yrs Kaplan, Leroy 1 P 2 30 34 3 yrs Kressbach, Tyrell 3 K 2 24 40 1 yr.

We've got a greatly improved line relative to last season, particularly at C. We might well have our first 1000 yard rusher this season, that's how much we've upgraded at RB and O-line. Moore is the obvious weak link, but he might be able to grow into the spot. At least I hope he can!

Code:
Brown, Aaron 9 LDE LDE 6 34 42 3 yrs Philbin, Gerry 36 RDE RDE 7 36 43 1 yr. Williamson, Josh 96 RDE 1 14 33 3 yrs Johnson, Walter 18 LDT LDT 6 41 50 2 yrs Rasmussen, Oscar 77 LDT 2 24 32 2 yrs Miller, Fred 51 RDT RDT 7 31 31 3 yrs

We're perilously thin on the D-line. Rasmussen backs up both DT spots, Williamson the two DEs. I expect to see some improvement from both those guys with the PT they're going to get. We still need upgrades on this front, but at least things are improving.

Code:
Briles, Byron 53 MLB 2 15 29 2 yrs Butkus, Dick 55 MLB 5 37 62 3 yrs Criter, Ken 91 MLB MLB 3 42 52 3 yrs Hazeltine, Matt 57 SLB 15 37 45 2 yrs Hurston, Chuck 95 SLB SLB 7 41 44 3 yrs Grantham, Larry 35 WLB 11 40 40 2 yrs Bruggers, Bob 35 WLB WLB 6 42 43 2 yrs Barlow, Brett 99 WLB 1 24 62 3 yrs

Probably the strongest, certainly the deepest part of our team. Criter fends off Butkus to be the starting MLB. Barlow is buried deep behind Bruggers and Grantham, further lending to the fears that he's going to be a serious bust. New blood is needed at SLB.

Code:
Summers, Fred 23 LCB 3 41 49 3 yrs Lockhart, Carl 49 LCB LCB 7 50 57 3 yrs Fisk, Seth 37 RCB 2 20 28 2 yrs Charles, John 43 RCB RCB 5 51 51 3 yrs Fiset, Jamal 21 SS 2 21 37 2 yrs Covington, Isaac 34 SS SS 2 22 38 2 yrs Perry, Juan 27 FS 2 16 37 2 yrs Lyons, J.B. 42 FS FS 2 22 38 3 yrs

We've suddenly got some really nice cornerbacks. Our safeties look weak on the surface, but they play better than their numbers indicate and I expect their progress to be quite rapid as the season goes on.

All in all, I'd say we're going to be competitive this season, probably pick up at least a few wins. I'll conservatively say that we can go 4-12 on the year.

I thought that in an empty cupboard dynasty one of the rules if you can only sign players who were drafted in the empty cupboard year or later?

Oh well, doesn't really matter I guess.

It depends on the person running the empty cupboard, I think. The way I interpreted it has always been it's just a case of cutting everyone from the roster and starting with rot, building up from there.
