(DDS:CB) Foz puts a little *UNF* into the Big Dance?

That's the University of North Florida, that is.. and I think it will be a very very long time before we're in the Big Dance. We're in the Atlantic Sun Conference, and we have a Prestige... of 1. Wow.

We have good facilities (C) for our level, and we're a decent academic school.. but... this could be quick.

The Starting 5:

SR PG O.J. Penn (6'1") (Rated 3.0 Stars, Potential 3.5)

Has a really sweet outside shot, but doesn't look to create for himself. Athletic, good at creating turnovers, but lazy with moving his feet. Not a great ball handler.

SOPH SG Gee Walton (6'0), (2.0/3.0)

Another guy with a great outside shot, who doesn't look to create. Good passer (probably run some with him at the point), a bit worrisome academically (he's passing, but just by the skin of his teeth)

SR Small Forward Charlie Barrett (6'3") (3.5/3.0)
That's right, he's better now then he'll ever be... Very good rebounder for his height. I wish some of these guys had a better scoring rating then 3, cuz they all so far have had outside shot ratings of 8+.

JR Power Forward Ray Betts (6'6") (3.5/3.5)
Our best scoring threat (4/5), and very dependable at the line. Good rebounder, but may be a bit small for his position. Very athletic.

SOPH Center Kirk Price (6'8") (2.0/1.0)
A good passer for a big man, but that's because he seems to be allergic to the bucket. Horrible foul shooter, and apparently the old coach gave up on him ever being anything more then a bricklayer. Good with blocked shots, but horrible with defensive positioning.

The Bench.

Not a true scorer in the lot, but

Some reserve Guards
Jr Brandon Smith can fill it up from the outside. He may start at SG a bit.
Jr Bryan Alexander has not lived up to his potential, but is good at the drive.
Sophmore Darelle Spence handles the ball well in the open court, good ball hawking ability.

Some reserve forwards/center
Brandon Peterson can act as a 3rd guard, good jumper.
Pat Davis will play the 4 and the 5, but he's not going to set the world on fire.
TJ Edwards will help out as a good warm body.

We only have $31,000 for recruiting, so we're definitely staying local. We buy the basic report for the southeast, costing us $5k. We're definintely not going to any camps!

I talk to Brandon Donovan, the AD at UNF, and I bite the bullet. We're not going to be a good team this year.. but we need to play a tough OOC schedule to get better. then again, at our level, "Our Lady of Perpetual Blindness" would be a tough schedule. Hey, I console myself, hopefully we can get a bunch of money maker games. hah. Like I'd get to see one dime out of it.

bad Non Conference schedule:

We will play some big conference teams, Miami (FL) (at home, no less!), George Mason, Cal, St Joe's, Xavier..

Lots percolating on the recruit front, but let's see if we can reel them in..

First game: Vs Miami of Florida at home.

We take a quick 2-0 lead on an alley oop jam from Price to Barrett, and hope that's not the only lead we get in this game.

Actually, we go up 8-0 before Miami can score a hoop, and I'm sure that the big team (well, compared to us) is a bit shocked that we're not laying down and dying for them.

We keep it up, and nine minutes in, we've shot 10-12 from the floor, and somehow lead 22-8!

They wake up a bit and score the next seven, before Betts stops the bleeding with a drive and a baby jumper.

It's nip and tuck the rest of the first half, Miami's decided they can beat us from the outside (5-8 from 3), but Gee Walton (who was dropped from the starting lineup) scored 11 points off the bench, and we lead 43-39 at the half.

The beginning of the 2nd half is Ugly with a capital Ugh. We turn the ball over 5 times in the first four minutes. Our only saving grace is that not only has Miami been turning the ball over, they couldn't hit water if they fell out of a boat at this point, and we stretch the lead to 8, 47-39.

The game continues to be sloppy, but we get a couple fast break turnover dunks and stretch the lead out further, 62-50 with 9:00 to play, but it's all subs in to give the tired starters a rest.. we need to start watching the clock here.

Barrett seems to want the ball every possession, and we give it to him, he's 11-17 (22 points) for the game, and with 4:30 to play, we can start to smell the upset, as we lead 70-54!

There's pandamonium on the sidelines, as the last minutes tick off, and when that final buzzer sounds, I quickly make my way over and shake the hand of the bewildered Miami coach, and follow my boys, who are whoopin and hollerin up a storm back to the lockerroom, winners by a score of 79-62!..

ah.. it doesn't get any better than this...

Key Stat: They went 3-12 from 3 pt range int he 2nd half and committed 23 turnovers. North Florida outscored them in the paint 38-28.

Player of the game: Charlie Barrett: 27 points (13-22 shooting), 7 Boards, 2 assists, 1 Steal.

Come on you ospreys!

Our next game is against Maryland East-Shore, and againm sloppiness is the name of the game. Between the two teams, there's 24 first half fouls, and the two teams get lots and lots of practice at the free throw line, going a combined 23-32 (us 11-15, them 12-17), but we lead 40-39 at the break.

The 2nd half is just a reeking, smouldering cauldron of suck. Yes, us coaches use that term. Our shooting provided enough bricks to build a new school wing, (25% in the 2nd half), and 12 second half turnovers doom us to a 74-62 defeat.

So in the second half of UMES, the adrenaline from the major upset ran out.
