Joining the ranks of parents...(part 2: let's do it again --- 6/19/09)

(EDIT: Post 28 skips the necromancy part of the thread.)

My wife is pregnant with what will be our first child. I'm really excited to be a father at last (and that's not looking at this with rose-colored glasses, I know it'll be a lot of work and frustration at times too).

My wife's excited to be a mother...that is, for the pregnancy to finish already. She has had a pretty miserable nine weeks thus far, with a lot of nausea throughout the day that only seems to go away if she eats, which is contrary to what I had heard about morning sickness. Is this unusual in other people's experiences?

Nothing much else to report for now, but she finally allowed me to share the news with others so I thought I'd post.

congratulations.

the good news is she's close to the middle trimester, and generally things get better at that point for a while. for both of my wife's pregancies, she started feeling better almost to the day she hit 12 weeks.

Just wanted to chime in and say my wife is 8 months along with our first, and she had a rough first trimester, but it eased up quite a bit at the second one. Just a little over a month to go now.

First, congrats! Way to go!

During my wife's first pregnancy, she'd come back from work at 2:30 in the afternoon and start making dinner. I'm pretty Pavlovian, so when she'd say "Dinner time!" I'd come out of the office and start eating, even though it was only three in the afternoon. Then she'd make another meal at six. And then she'd be pigging out again at eight. It went on like this for about six months. We both looked pregnant by the time she slowed down.

JAG! Congratulations to you and your wife!

As for the morning sickness: perfectly normal. In fact, the best way to fend off morning sickness is to eat small meals frequently, say, every 2 hours. That's not to say it works for everyone--pregnancy is about as predictable and uniform as my golf swing--but if it's working for your wife, that's common. She may find it helpful to always include a bit of carb and a bit of protein in every one of those meals. My wife lived on peanuts and raisins every two hours for months in a couple of her pregnancies.

Missed this yesterday...

Congrats!!!
It took until 16 weeks for my 24-hour sickness to go away, but never letting my stomach get too empty helped quite a bit. And if you think that she is reafy for it to be over now, just wait until about the 8th month point

Congrats!! Sounds like your wife and my wife are about the same time along. Her appetite seems to have been more affected this time compared to her first pregnancy, and she's getting nausea / morning sickness more often ... sometimes is helps when she eats, and sometimes it doesn't. We think she's just more screwed up since she has two in there this time.

Figure I'd tack this on to my post from a few years ago. Danielle is pregnant again and is at 20 weeks now. We had the ultrasound today and found out the kid is healthy and that we're having another girl. This is obviously cosmic retribution for being one of three boys growing up. (but in all seriousness I don't mind) (and yes, I say that without having experience dealing with teenage daughters, so I will laugh at myself in 10-15 years for that comment). It's been another hellish pregnancy for my wife, she was practically bed-ridden the first fourteen weeks and only the past six or so has she had some ok days intermingled with bad ones. The little one is not very kicky compared with Raven.

We're both pretty excited. We had a rough go of trying to have a second child with a number of miscarriages (5 I believe) the past year and a half. We went to see a specialist at 5 or so weeks to see if there was anything we could do to increase our odds and he showed us a chart containing a study about people with recurring pregnancy loss, and that even after 5+ consecutive miscarriages the odds were 50+% that the next would be viable. I guess the odds worked for us this time around.

Each of my wife's pregnancies was different and during her last one she had heartburn pretty much continually (one of the reasons our youngest is called "Keegan" - it an Irish name meaning 'little fiery one' ...), so basically unless a doctor says you should be concerned roll with it ...
