Week 1 - UTEP (0-0) @ #6 Texas (0-0) (-22)
Final: Texas 38, UTEP 0

Texas Memorial Stadium was sold out in the inaugural game of the season for both teams. Unfortunately for UTEP fans, it wasn't much of a game as expected. Texas, behind the rushing attack of Mercury Tyler (181 yards), put up over 300 yards of offense on the ground. They also threw the ball for 192 yards, pushing their total yards to close to 500. In other words, they ran right over our defense.

On the other side of the ball, the UT defense was stout, allowing us only 143 yards of total offense. Here's a look at our drives for the day. Our punter, Charlie Rigsby, saw a lot of action.

Week 2 - McAllen (0-1) @ UTEP (0-1) (-4)
Final: UTEP 37, McAllen 7

Just over 33,000 fans were present to see us get our first win of the season. Our defense played a much better game against the weaker McAllen team (in comparison to Texas, ofcourse). Unfortuantely, we also lost starting DT Todd Foley for the year. He'll be undergoing reconstructive knee surgery in the next few weeks and his career here at UTEP is over.

Starting running back and workhorse Justin Vickery torched the McAllen defense for 91 yards. He was a non-factor in the Texas game, so we were glad to see him back to normal. QB Omar Franks was 19/27 on the day for 181 yards. Offensive coordinator Barry Thompson and I have had disagreements on who should be starting at QB. I like Franks and his boy is Bryant Jaconetty. Franks played well, helping his case, but we have Jaconetty waiting if Franks isn't getting the job done.

Week 4 - Texas Tech (2-0) (-9) @ UTEP (1-1)
Final: Texas Tech 52, UTEP 6

Absolutely horrible. Down 24-6 at halftime, I saw our team's spirit crushed. They came out in the second half and flat out gave up. I haven't seen a performance like this since I arrived here in El Paso. We gave a more talented Texas a better game than what I saw today. Dreadful. Pitiful. It's sad when you the only good thing you can say about a game is that you only had 2 penalties for 8 yards. Horrible.

Week 5 - UTEP (1-2) @ Louisiana Tech (1-2) (-3)
Final: Louisiana Tech 43, UTEP 14

I wish I could find the silver lining here. I'm having no success. I knew we'd have some growing pains with a new system and staff being put in place, but losing this big to a lesser talented Louisiana Tech team is discouraging, to say the least. QB Omar Franks has played his way out of the starting lineup for the foreseeable future. His stats for today's game: 14/31, 77 yards, 6 INTERCEPTIONS. I like Franks. He played well last season, but he's been totally exposed since we've moved from the T-formation to the pro set.

On top of the 6 INT's, we also had 2 fumbles. You usually don't win games when you commit 8 turnovers.

Week 7 - Nevada (2-2) (-4) @ UTEP (1-3)
Final: UTEP 45, Nevada 16

We needed this win in a bad way and we got it. Both sides of the ball played well today. I challenged our secondary after being lit up the past few weeks through the air and they met my challenge, holding Nevada to less than 100 yards passing. Our run defense is still horrible. Ranked #89 in the country in run defense, we gave up 200 yards rushing to Nevada today. I know we're down 2 starters due to defense, but some of our guy's are going to have to step up.

QB Jaconetty broke out of his shell in a big way. 24/36, 385 yards and 1 INT. Maybe OC Thompson was right all along. I'll never tell him that, though.

Week 8 - #14 Boise State (5-0) (-9) @ UTEP (2-3)
Final: Boise State 56, UTEP 13

As good as advertised. That's the way I would describe the Boise State team we played today. I had this one pegged as a loss, but it's always nice when you can keep it close. Unfortunately for us, it wasn't. Over-matched on both offense and defense, we just never were in this one. Like I said, unfortunate, but expected.

We had a scare in the second quarter when starting QB Jaconetty left the game. Luckily, it was only minor back spasms and we expect him to start when San Jose State comes to town next weekend.

Highlights from Coach Daniel's media session
Week 9, 2005

On this year's team chemistry: "We haven't gelled as well as we did last season, but the chemistry is there. I've seen a lot of articles on us missing the chemistry we had last year and I disagree. We're a tight knit unit and team chemistry is the least of my worries."

On the staff shakeup during the offseason: "Those were moves I thought were necessary. I knew it'd impact our proficiency on offense, but so be it. It was important that I had my own guys here. We've had some growing pains, definitely. I'm not concerned, though. The problems we're having were expected, but I've seen our offense make some serious strides since our first game in Austin."

On the switch at quarterback: "Omar Franks is a great kid. He played as well as we could've last season. His style of play just doesn't mesh with our current pro set formation. Bryant Jaconetty has stepped up and played very well in his role at starting quarterback. He's a redshirt junior so he's our guy for the distant future."

On the expectations for the future: "Rome wasn't built in a day and neither will this program. UTEP isn't known for it's football program, but it will be. I'm confident that the future here in El Paso is bright."

Week 9 - San Jose State (1-6) @ UTEP (2-4) (-12)
Final: San Jose State 28, UTEP 16

It's difficult to find anything positive about this game. We're a more talented team than San Jose State, but they were the better team today plain and simple. They punched us in the mouth early and we rolled over for them. There's really not much else to say. We were moving the ball offensively, but our defense was atrocious once again. This game is definitely on the defense.

I was really hoping to put this one in the W column as we're about to hit the road for the next 3 weeks.

-----

Week 10 - UTEP (2-5) @ Fresno State (4-3) (-3)
Final: Fresno State 24, UTEP 17

Another week, another loss. This is getting old.

QB Jaconetty had a rough day (19/44, 250 yards, 2 TD, 3 INT). The picks came at crucial times, too. We were driving and moving the ball each time Fresno got the pick. It hurts to think about what might have been during those drives, but oh well. Our defense, once again, didn't help matters by giving up our halftime lead.

Adding insult to injury: we lose starting running back Vickery for the season due to a separated shoulder.

Next week we travel to SMU (2-6). It'll be a critical game as we'll be trying to stay out of the WAC cellar.

Week 11 - UTEP (2-6) (-10) @ SMU (2-6)
Final: UTEP 38, SMU 14

A glimmer of hope in a down year. Okay, so SMU is no powerhouse, but hell, I'll take any win at this point.

The score may indicate our offense was clicking, but that wasn't the case. We scored 21 points off turnovers. Thank you, SMU. I'm not saying we were terrible offensively, but SMU helped us out quite a bit. Some of our better performances were QB Jaconetty (17/24, 172 yards, 3 TD, 0 INT) and RB Heney (13 carries, 80 yards). Heney will definitely have to step up and play well for us the rest of the season due to us losing Vickery for the year.

Our real game MVP(s) was the defense, surprisingly. Granted, once again, that SMU is no powerhouse, it was nice to see us stopping drives and forcing many 3 and outs. Senior strong safety Lonnie Lyle was all over the field with 8 tackles and 2 assists.

2005 SEASON REVIEW

In one word: disappointing. We've got to move forward, though. I had some higher expectations after last year's results and we just didn't meet any of them. I would've expected a 3-8 season my first year here in El Paso, but not in the second season. If 2005 taught us anything, it's that we have a long way to go before we're competitive in the WAC, much less nationally. It's an uphill battle, but one I'm willing to take on. Academics are improving which is one of the few bright sides of the year. Apparently the previous regime didn't care too much for academics and it has shown in our overall reputation score (33, by the way). This year's team GPA was 3.09, second highest in the country.

Here's a look at the UTEP 2006 schedule:

Code:
2006 Texas-El Paso Schedule Rival: Hawaii Stadium Capacity: 51,500 Season Tickets Sold: 23,800 Week Opponent Result Attendance Weather Television 1 AKRON 2 CORPUS CHRISTI 3 (21) TEXAS TECH 5 SAN JOSE STATE 6 at Rice 7 SOUTHERN METHODIST 8 at Fresno State 9 LOUISIANA TECH 11 at Nevada 12 at Tulsa 13 HAWAII Conference games in bold.

2006 Outlook: Well, it's gonna be hard to play as badly as we did last season. Hopefully with a full season under our new pro set system, we'll see our offense be a little more proficient. Starting quarterback Jaconetty had a great offseason and we'll be looking for a lot more production out of him this year. Our schedule isn't too brutal. We managed to miss Boise State in conference play, which is nice.

Week 1 - Akron (0-0) @ UTEP (-3)
Final: Akron 10, UTEP 6

This one is tough to swallow. We owned the time of possession and we were moving the ball very well at times. We just couldn't get in the endzone. Akron gave us numerous opportunities to win this game and we just didn't get it done.

Akron is no offensive juggernaut, but I was impressed with our defense today. We only allowed 242 yards of total offense. DE Roosevelt McWilliams is the leader of our defense and he had a great day with 9 tackles and 1 sack.

This loss is definitely on the offense. We've got to find some consistency or it's gonna be another long season.

Week 2 - Corpus Christi (0-0) @ UTEP (0-1) (-4)
Final: UTEP 20, Corpus Christi 17

We really didn't deserve to win this one. If Jaconetty didn't pull off some 4th quarter magic, we're looking at 0-2. Trailing 17-10 to start the final quarter, Jaconetty led some beautiful drives to put us ahead. Other than the 4th, our offense was pretty much flat. Two weeks into the season and I have some serious concerns with the offense.

Defense gives up 247 yards rushing. That's concerning as well. It's not pretty, but I'll take the win and see what Texas Tech throws us next weekend.

Week 3 - #18 Texas Tech (1-0) (-16) @ UTEP (1-1)
Final: Texas Tech 31, UTEP 21

We gave this one away. Leading 14-10 going into the 4th quarter, we give up 3 TD's.

The defense has got to step up. They played well all game until that last quarter. Also the second week in a row we've given up 200+ rushing yards. The offense was just doing enough for us to win this game, so the letdown in the 4th was hard to watch. This would've been a huge win for our program, but we move forward. Next week is a much needed bye week as we're seriously banged up on defense.

Week 5 - San Jose State (0-3) @ UTEP (1-2) (-6)
Final: UTEP 24, San Jose State 19

I wanted to win this one bad. I pinpointed the San Jose State game last season where I thought we started our descent into the WAC cellar. I'm definitely happy to get the win today as it puts us back at .500 and gets us to 1-0 in the conference.

We led 17-3 at the half and our defense almost gave it up. Right now we're down 2 starters due to injuries (OLB Shaw and DT Strong), so we're looking for some guys to step up. The offense is playing better. We haven't really had a breakout game, but I know we have big play capability. I've seen an enormous improvement with our 3rd down conversions this season. As of right now, we're completing 48.2% on third down opportunities, ranking us at #11 in the NCAA. This is up from the dreadful 23.0% we posted last season.

Week 6 - UTEP (2-2) @ Rice (1-2) (-3)
Final: Rice 38, UTEP 20

Rice is one of the better WAC teams this season so I'm not too upset with the loss. The score doesn't actually reflect how the game was played, though. We scored all 20 points in the fourth quarter against their second string defense. QB Jaconetty had a really bad game today completing 10/41 for 99 yards and 2 INT's. After the game we'd learn that he suffered a sprained neck in the first quarter. He's probable for next week, but we'll keep an eye on him

Week 7 - SMU (1-3) @ UTEP (2-3) (-11)
Final: UTEP 41, SMU 17

We score 27 unanswered points in the fourth to come back and win this one. The first three quarters of the game was probably some of the worst football I've seen played at UTEP since I arrived. It's amazing how Jekyll and Hyde this football team is. It drives me crazy not knowing which team is going to show up on any given quarter of play.

QB Jaconetty, playing with a sprained neck, had one of the best performances of the day completing 20/28 for 271 yards with 3 TD's. Our rushing attack has finally gained some momentum with both Vickery and Heney gaining almost 100 yards each. Once again the defense wasn't anything to write home about. SMU, not exactly known for their offensive prowess, torched our D for over 400 yards.

With the win, we're back at .500 as we travel to take on 3-3 (3-0) Fresno State next weekend.

Week 8 - UTEP (3-3) @ Fresno State (3-3) (-4)
Final: Fresno State 35, UTEP 3

The Good
- Running game is finally becoming consistent. Heney went for 118 yards today.

The Bad
- QB Jaconetty, coming off a stellar game against SMU, has one of his worst games of the year. 7/21, 58 yards, 1 INT
- 162 total offensive yards
- Allowing 416 yards of total offense

The Ugly
- 1/13 on third down conversions
- Your punter having more yards than your offense

Week 9 - Louisiana Tech (0-6) @ UTEP (3-4) (-13)
Final: UTEP 16, Louisiana Tech 14

We played poorly. They played even worse.

Week 11 - UTEP (4-4) (-5) @ Nevada (1-6)
Final: UTEP 42, Nevada 0

This one feels good. Nevada is bad. This is how we should play against inferior teams. The score should be indicative on how the game went. Here are some highlights from today:

QB Jaconetty - 28/37, 247 yards, 4 TD
RB Vickery - 18 carries, 72 yards, 1TD
RB Heney - 11 carries, 64 yards
DE Hough - 8 tackles, 2.5 sacks, 3 assists

Only real damper on the day is that we lose starting flanker Lone Wolf Rohlfing for the season due to an ACL tear.

Week 12 - UTEP (5-4) (-3) @ Tulsa (1-8)
Final: Tulsa 31, UTEP 24 (OT)

One step forward, 2 steps back. Tulsa is statistically one of the worst teams in the country. This one stings.

For what it's worth, it's also hard to win a game in overtime when you commit a turnover on your first possession.

Rivalry week is here as Hawaii comes to town in the last game of the year. It should be a fun and pretty evenly matched game as they also come into the game at 5-5. They run their offense out of the Wing-T and that scares me. Ranked #15 nationally in running yards and our guys haven't stopped the run all year. It should make for an interesting conclusion to the 2006 season.

I guess Vegas and myself were wrong about this one. Not only wasn't it a close game, they kicked our ass. Plain and simple. I hate ending a season this way, but it is what it is.

2006 SEASON REVIEW

It was a rough year, but a definite improvement over 2005. The stats show we were better defensively than offensively and that's just not the case. We played some very poor offensive teams this year. I'm a defensive minded coach and we're just not where I want us to be. I know this is only year 3 of my tenure, but I'd like to see us play much better on that side of the ball. Defensive coordinator Clay Figures will be 69 next year, so I may be looking at some personnel changes in the off-season.

I brought in my best recruiting class since I've been here at UTEP this season. Ranked #90 in the country is nothing too spectacular, but we've been down at the bottom of the barrel the past few years. Recruiting has been tough, but I think I'm starting to figure things out, which should help in the future. Academics are improving, albeit at a very slow pace.

Tough ending to the year, but it looks like your recruiting class is rounding out. Lee Shepherd should be a key player at DT.

Week 1 - UTEP (0-0) @ Louisiana-Lafayette (0-0) (-2)
Final: UTEP 41, Louisiana-Lafayette 21

With the exception of 86 penalty yards and 2 turnovers, we played a pretty good opening game to kick off the 2007 season. The offense was clicking on all cylinders today as we totaled 517 yards on the day. QB Jaconetty was money (26/46, 292 yards, 4 TD) all day. RB Heney was running wild on the LALF defense (12 carries, 164 yards, 13.6 ypc, 1 TD).

Louisiana-Lafayette isn't a terribly good team, but it feels good to kick off the season with a win on the road.

Week 2 - Rutgers (0-0) @ UTEP (1-0) (-4)
Final: UTEP 27, Rutgers 24

It took us a fourth quarter comeback, but we got the win to improve to 2-0 in the early part of the season. This win was big in the fact that we'll be hitting the road for the next 3 games.

QB Jaconetty had another great game throwing for 223 yards and completing 22/37. He may have a bad game every now and then, but he's improved so much over the course of the past few years and we'll miss him when he graduates following this season.

The defense was shaky in the first half, but they held their own in the second. 2 weeks in a row allowing less than 250 yards gained. This is a definite improvement over the defenses I've had in the recent past. DE Darrin Hough had a big game for us today (9 tackles and 2 sacks).

Next week we travel to Lubbock, TX to take on #11 Texas Tech.

Week 3 - UTEP (2-0) @ #11 Texas Tech (1-0) (-6)
Final: Texas Tech 49, UTEP 14

Texas Tech took us down a few notches today. I was hoping to give them more of a game than what transpired, but it is what it is.

Our secondary was lit up as the freshman Red Raiders quarterback C.J. Benson threw for 379 yards with 5 TD receptions. Offensively, we couldn't establish the run. Hell, you can't establish much of anything when commit 4 turnovers.

Week 6 - UTEP (3-1) @ Rice (3-0) (-19)
Final: Rice 34, UTEP 24

We played them tougher than Vegas and many others were predicting. The game was also probably closer than the scoreboard indicates. Offensively, we had a decent day. On the defensive side of the ball.. wow. We were bad. Real bad. Our D had no answer for Rice's wishbone attack and they lit us up for 346 yards on the ground.

Injuries hit us hard this week.

- Starting running back Jake McGowan career is over as he has been diagnosed with repetitive concussion syndrome
- Starting WR Lone Wolf Rohlfing is done for the season with ACL damage.

Week 7 - SMU (2-3) @ UTEP (3-2) (-4)
Final: UTEP 31, SMU 17

SMU runs a similar wishbone offensive that we saw last week against Rice, which had me very concerned going into this game. Luckily for us, SMU doesn't quite have the talent that Rice possesses, so we were able to keep their total rushing yards to 215.

This was a game that was back and forth all day and a lot closer than I wished it would be. Going into the fourth, the game was tied up at 17 and QB Jaconetty led some gorgeous drives down field to seal the victory.

Notable stats
QB Jaconetty - 15/21, 226 yards
RB Heney - 14 carries, 112 yards
WR Kemp - 5 catches, 92 yards
DE Hough - 8 tackles, 2 sacks

Week 9 - Tulsa (2-5) @ UTEP (4-3) (-9)
Final: UTEP 31, Tulsa 24

This was a hard fought win for us. Tulsa played us tougher than I was expecting, but I'm siked we get the win to match last year's win total.

It was a evenly matched game, for the most part. We kept it balanced offensively with 117 yards gained on the ground and 224 thrown through the air. QB Jaconetty bounced back after a rough game against Boise completing 22/32 and 2 TD's.

After the game, I got some surprising and uplifting news. #161 nationally ranked RB Lyles Broderick from Richardson, TX will be joining the team next season. Our scouts are very high on this kid and we're happy to have him.

Week 11 - Nevada (1-6) @ UTEP (5-3) (-11)
Final: UTEP 17, Nevada 16

Nevada is, atleast statistically, one of the worst teams in the NCAA on both offense and defense. Looking at previous game film from the year, they haven't played as well of a game as they did today. Luckily, with 2:28 remaining on the game clock, we punched it in to take the lead. I breathed a huge sigh of relief when this one was over.

Nevada won't play another game this season as well as they played today. I guarantee it. The win today also locks us up for something UTEP hasn't seen in a few years: a winning record.

Week 12 - Fresno State (6-3) (-4) @ UTEP (6-3)
Final: Fresno State 34, UTEP 17

With a rare opportunity to have our game on television and also an outside shot at a bowl invitation, you would assume we would come out and play our 'game of the year'. Nope.

5 turnovers and we only held the ball for 19 minutes. With a few late scores, this one looks closer than what actually happened.

We've got 1 game left of the 2007 season as we travel to Hawaii (4-6) for our annual rivalry game.

An absolutely great way to end the year. In the past, we haven't finished the season as well as I hoped, but this one feels good. Plus, we haven't beat these guys since 2004.

Game MVP has to go to our kicker Cornelius Gustafson who went 4/4 throughout the day and the crucial 3 kicks he made during the fourth to eventually put us ahead. QB Jaconetty also had a very good game to end his career here at UTEP (15/26, 274 yards, 3 TD). RB Heney, who's really stepped us since we've lost McGowan, was running over the Hawaii defense (20 carries, 117 yards).

2007 SEASON REVIEW
It was an interesting season. I think we're moving to a middle of the pack WAC team as opposed to where we started - WAC cellar team. We're adding some better talent as recruiting continues to go well the past 2 years. I'm real excited to see some of these guys next season. Defensive coordinator Clay Figures told me today that he's retiring. That comes as no surprise as he turns 70 next year. We'll start our search for another DC right away.

I had some intriguing coaching offers the past 2 years as well, mostly from the ACC. Last year, Wake Forest approached me. I'm not going to lie, it was tough to turn them down as they have a great academic reputation. This year, UNC approached me. I had an easier time rejecting them as they have less of academic rep and prestige than WF. Also, I'm having fun building the program here in El Paso. Since recruiting has improved, I'm really looking forward to the future.

Thanks, Dolemite. It's been tough, but rewarding.

Good luck with your new dynasty. It sucks about your last save.

The Miners are on the rise! Great job there. Too bad you got the shaft from the bowls, but that was a damn good recruiting class. I need that in my NMSU dynasty.

too bad about no bowl, but how about Boise not representing, I think they have lost every bowl they have gone to.

We're most certainly on the rise, but we've got a long way to go before we're competing for WAC championships.

0-4 since I've taken the job at UTEP. Unbelievable, really. They've always had good teams. It's been very surprising to see them winless in bowl games the past 4 seasons.
