Preseason News and Notes: 2007
Coaching: No coaches retired or were hired away. However, Coach Purple replaced 3 assistants, including the Defensive Coordinator. Details to follow. Schools hiring new coaches include: Virginia, Wake Forest and Texas A&M. Player Reports: Nobody left and nobody lost a girlfriend. We may reduce some student-athletes to 18/28 relaxation from 19/29 since we have had no ill effects in the past few years. 2004 Yearly Revenue: $17,440,000, a 9% increase from the previous year. The main increase was from TV revenue, while stadium suite revenue took a dive due to poor economic conditions in Ft. Worth.

Coaching Changes: 2007
Three new faces will patrol the Horned Frog sideline or man the booth on Saturdays this fall. Unfortunately, only three. All coaches were up for review, but a dearth of candidates left Coach Purple little choice for many positions. Scout-Deep South, while far from a bad scout, is poor in QB ratings, hamstringing the progress of the QB position. There were no other choices, however, so quarterbacking will continue to be below expectations based on recruiting promise. The 3 coaches added to the staff are:
While Roberts may not look so great, he is an improvement in 4 categories and even on the other three. Especially important is the improved injury and rehab grades, as many defensive starters missed games last year, including graduated stars DT Dusty Aceves and DE Riddick Ackerman.

Freshmen Roundup: 2007
TCU is proud to introduce the newest Fightin' Horned Frogs. As Coach Purple is fond of saying, "I hate freshman. You stake your life, your career, on a bunch of 18 year old kids, and if they suck, well, you're SCREWED." Coach Purple has said he plans on redshirting the majority of the class, depending on future injuries:

Offense: Quarterback: There is now a glut of "good" QBs on the squad, but Palmer has slightly elevated himself above the rest and should get most of the playing time. Palmer also is higher rated at preventing interceptions, which is obviously a key to any title run. You never hope for injuries, but if Palmer goes down, Hidy is very experienced and can fill in well.
Running Back: With Elliot and Patton, we are ready to roll on the ground behind the offensive line. Elliot is coming off an injury year, but we hope with the line and Patton protecting him, he can recover the form he had 2 years ago.
Tight Ends: Guthrie is now one of the top 2 TE in the country, and has 3 years left, if he stays. Boone is an excellent back-up.
Wide Receivers: Childers has made a tremendous leap into the top receivers in the country. He gives us a stud that opponents will need to watch, hopefully opening-up the running game even more for Elliot.
Offensive Line: Once again, offensive line is our strength. As long as Bernstein stays healthy, Elliot and Palmer should stay healthy.
Kickers: Boo has been a huge burden to the team, making only 59% of his FG attempts for his career. This can be the difference between a good year and a great one, but we have noone to replace him with except walk-ons and a freshman who is redshirting. Britton is much better ratings wise this year, so hopefully he will improve his 33 yard average from last season.

Defense: Defensive Line: Ackerman and Aceves have graduated, leaving little in the way of replacements. DT will be OK with White taking over in the 3-4 defense, but DE will be problematic as far as helping stop the run. We have a good linebacker group, thank goodness, to help stuff the run, and it will be called upon to keep the 'D' off the field.
Linebackers: This group must step-up or opponents will have many long scoring drives. The 'backers will be called upon to help stop the run more, and pass defense less, putting more pressure on the secondary.
Secondary: The corners must be able to shut opponents passing game down or the linebackers will be forced to cover more, which in turn will put pressure on the D-line for run support. If the secondary can't do their job, the whole defensive scheme falls apart, as does our hopes for an undefeated season.

Recruiting Outlook: 2007
This will be an important year for Horned Frog recruiting as the starting lineups are littered with seniors, graduating and redshirt, so that many holes will need to be filled, and we don't have the studs left to fill them. A full 16 player class will be recruited. There are 13 players from Texas ranked in the top 200 by Rivals.com, but only 8 of these fill the TCU academic requirements. With a Prestige rating of 85, more recruits will hopefully find TCU appetizing for reasons other than Academics or Distance. We need to be able to recruit across the nation if we are to compete with the Mississippi State and Oklahoma State level teams we must catch to be a top-level team ourselves.

Schedule and Predictions: 2007
Schedule:
History:
Predictions: Coach Purple is pleased with the first top 25 pre-season ranking in his tenure and has attempted to step-up the non-conference schedule a bit by having the first top 10 team as an opponent. The problem is that the Frogs happened to get lucky and this is the season they miss Memphis on the C-USA schedule. However, Penn State will be a VERY tough test and could ruin a possible perfect 11-0 season on the 1st week of the year. Unless some of the middle C-USA ranked teams raise their level, even an 11-0 record may not get TCU into the Championship game due to the low SoS (strength of schedule) resulting from the 4 conference teams ranked in the 100's, plus SMU also very low ranked. SoS could keep the Frogs out of the race if they beat Penn State, or it could force the Frogs into a minor bowl even with only one loss. Also, SoS could doom TCU to 2nd place in the conference if Memphis goes through their conference games undefeated, as expected, even if both are 8-0. With the number of graduating starters and solid back-ups, this may be the last great team for a few years, meaning it could be a "now or never" kind of situation. Anyway, Coach Purple would love to predict an 11-0 record, but he just doesn't know if that is possible. Penn State, #9 ranked nationally, may be too damn good, and the Horned Frogs always have trouble with SMU, as well as Southern Miss, for some reason. Plus the one game a year when Coach Purple's Frogs seem to tank in a seemingly easy game. With all this reeling in his head, Coach predicts a 10-1 regular season record and a major bowl. He wants an end of year TOP 10 RANKING, as a goal.

WEEK 1
The Game:
The first quarter began with Penn State showing Coach Purple why they had the eye of the pollsters, as the Lions returned an interception 65 yards for a score, then State WR Tim Levine caught a 43 yard TD pass from QB Broadway Moe Cannida (yes, that is his name.) to take a 14-0 lead midway of the 1st quarter. After that, happy to report, the Toads TORE UP the Nittany Pussycats, giving-up one 76 yard Cannida to Levine 2nd quarter TD and nothing else for the entire game. Of course, by the time State scored that TD, the Frogs had torched them for 24 points of their own. So, while the halftime score was only 24-21, Frogs, the tone of the game was set for the 2nd half, during which Penn State could muster a whopping total of 30 yards. As for TCU, RB Graham Elliot returned to the field subpar on the ground with a 3.1 yards/carry average but also caught 7 passes. QB Ike Palmer, starting this year over last year's starter Joey Hidy, had a magnificent game after his first possession Int, compiling a QB rating of 186+ for the game. FB Kelvin Patton chipped in a 66 yard TD run, and the Frogs were off to a sweet start to the 2007 campaign. "I don't know what the future holds, if we can run the table or if enough teams ahead of us will fall," said Coach Purple,"but what a start this is for our program, coming in here before 90,000+ people and taking State to the cleaners." Final Score: TCU 38 Penn State 21 Players of the Week: Congratulations RB Graham Elliot 39 carries for 123 Yds, 1 Td QB Ike Palmer 19 of 24 for 213 Yds, 3 Td, 1 Int OG Cornelius Bishop 7-18 Blocks, 1 SkA Injuries were confined to: none (knock on wood) Year to Date:
Recruiting: As previously stated, this is not a good class from Texas to pick players from. Even our highest idolizer, WR Alan O'Niel, proved to be unrecruitable due to poor academics (654 SAT). In week 1, we contacted most of the Lone Star recruits and the top recruits with the highest test scores and GPA, hoping they would be Academic emphasis players. We contacted 17 players, and 9 proved to lean to Academics, with 2 more boys from TX with emphasis Distance. On the bad side, 6 of these are secondary Prestige emphasis. With our 85 Prestige score, we may not be able to get these players in competition with the likes of Okie ST. or Miss St. and so on, schools with 10 or more point leads on us in Prestige. We will monitor player contacts and visits and profile some players later when those offers start being given.

WEEK 2
The Game:
The game was better played, as noone fumbled the whole day. Following an Ohio State 3-and-out after the opening kickoff, TCU moved 72 yards in 5 plays to open the scring. QB Ike Palmer ran it in from the 12, but K Vincent Boo missed the point after , and the lead was 6-0. Ohio State answered with a 17 play, 81 yard drive that lasted 8:58 and began on their 6 yardline. However, the Frog 'D' stiffened and forced the Buckeyes to kick a field goal. 6-3, TCU. Unable to move far on their next possession, TCU P Scottie Britton put one inside the Ohio State 5-yardline and, when the Buckeyes could not move, TCU got the ball back at the State 32. 6 plays later, QB Palmer found FB Patton for a short TD pass and, Boo hitting the point after, the Toads went to half up, 13-3. The second half saw TCU put State away quickly, as RB Graham Elliot ran one in and Palmer hit WR Ellis Twisp for a score, putting the Frogs in command, 27-3. A brief burst by Ohio State got them close, but TCU slammed the door closed in the 4th quarter and moved their record to a spotless 2-0. Final Score: TCU 37 Ohio State 13 Players of the Week: Congratulations RB Graham Elliot 25 carries for 156 Yds, 1 Td QB Ike Palmer 16 of 22 for 183 Yds, 2 Td, 1 Int WR Ellis Twisp 4 receptions for 65 Yds, 1 TD Injuries were confined to: none Year to Date:
Recruiting: We have already received our first recruiting visit as Everett Farley an OLB from TX has agreed to come to Ft. Worth. Farley is rated #286 nationally and #13 for OLB. He is 54 Ath Prep and scouted at 70+. Any visiting linebacker is a plus, to say the least. Other players of note include:

WEEK 4: Skillet Time
The Game:
Scoring 24 points in each half en route to 31 first downs and 575 total yards, the Frogs had 3 WRs, Twisp, Childers and Huntley, each catch 2 TD passes. On the defensive side, TCU harked back to the Purple People Eaters of yore, limiting SMU to 6 first downs and 124 yards in 22 minutes of possession. The game was so one-sided, 3rd string QB Vinny Madison played in his first game ever, throwing a TD pass to Huntley in the process. "That is how you need to treat a team inferior to your own," said Coach Purple. "If we play that way the rest of the year, noone can touch us." Final Score: TCU 48 SMU 0 Players of the Week: Congratulations RB Graham Elliot 35 carries for 141 Yds, 0 Td QB Ike Palmer 19 of 31 for 289 Yds, 5 Tds, 0 Int WR Ellis Twisp 7 receptions for 105 Yds, 2 TDs WR Karl Childers 6 receptions for 100 Yds, 2 TDs Injuries were confined to: WR Karl Childers QUESTIONABLE-2, Sprained Knee TE John Guthrie PROBABLE-2, Sprained Ankle RB Wayne Lawton PROBABLE-2, Bad Cold Year to Date:

WEEK 5
The Game:
As the sun began to set, flare rockets shot-off and the crowd rose to its feet in anticipation, looking towards the tunnel for the boys. A roar started to spread as the four wheelchairs were pushed out onto the field toward the mic stands. Eventually, the mates made it to the mics and tried to get up, to no avail. One of the crew went and put the microphone stands as low as they could go, and Mick began to sing...and nothing? No sound but a huge belch came out of Micks' mouth. The crowd began to get a bit antsy as they waited, then a smattering of boos was heard, then more. As the boo-birds began to take hold, lo and behold, Mick looked at Keith, smiled, and began to stand. A hush began to enfold the stadium. Mick broke into a big grin, stuck his tongue out about 7 inches and flicked it back and forth, and then began to sing "I see a Pirate and I want it painted PURPLE, No Pirates anymore I want them to turn PURPLE...and the crowd roared and roared, and the game began... ...and TCU held the Pirates to 235 total yards, and RB Graham Elliot made up for QB Ike Palmers' worst game of the year, earning Offensive National Player of the Week honors and, at least for a week, regaining the form he showed in winning the Heisman trophy in his 2nd year, and the Frogs were still undefeated and, finally, the Stones rested, and Coach Purple said "Amen," and it was good. Final Score: TCU 34 E. Carolina 10 Players of the Week: Congratulations RB Graham Elliot 36 carries for 206 Yds, 2 Td **National Offensive Player of the Week** C Jimmy Bernstein 6-10 blocks, 0 SkA Injuries were confined to: OLB Gino Sanford OUT-5, Hyperextended Knee Year to Date:
Recruiting: We have gained a 2nd visitor this week in TX OG Rodney Canady who is ranked #198 nationally and is the #20 OG. His Ath Prep is 29 and he is scouted 80+. TCU is his only visit, so far. Updating recruits mentioned previously:

I will try not to jinx the Frogs, just beat Memphis and demolish UAB for screwing up last season!
Excellent work on dismantling SMU. Even if you go 1-10 and demolish the Ponies, the season is a success.

HF P,we are good enough this year that jinxing should not be a problem (next year, may be another story).
We miss playing Memphis this year which I would say is a good thing, except they will probably end up undefeated, assuming we do too, and may be higher ranked due to strength of schedule, so that sucks. I STILL can't believe we lost to UAB last year. What a pisser. Thanks for posting, HF P, and go Cedar Pond. BTW, Cowtown FC is #1 in our series after week 1, although I don't believe we will end there.

WEEK 6: No Game
Recruiting: What a shit week. We lost 6 recruits to other schools, including 5 we've been tracking. The only good part is that 3 of the players chose a team they were not even visiting the week before, so maybe we can get one or two of those lucky type commitments in the future. We need them. The 5 gone are:

WEEK 7
The Game:
In a somber start to the day, the Marine Corps band, in their dress uniforms, played the Star Spangled Banner with great depth and piety in observance of all those dead and dying in a war far away. The Blue Angels flew overhead and dipped their wings to the crowd as the families of Texas servicemen lost to the war stood proudly by, hands shielding their eyes as they looked Heavenward. Then a battle of a different kind commenced. The Purple People Eaters held a pitiful Blazer squad to 6 first downs and 106 yards total offense as the Horned Frog offense danced up and down the field. 10 punts and 2 interceptions were all UAB could muster, despite giving-up no sacks in the game. On offense, TCU was so dominate, every player in uniform played a great deal, with backup RB Wayne Lawton scoring twice and QBs Joey Hidy and Vinny Madison sharing duty most of the second half. So busy were all Frogs, and so successful, that 22 players received at least one stoke. It was a great deal of fun, running up a 31-0 halftime lead and coasting home. The only downer was that TE John Guthrie and WR Karl Childers were lost to injury in their first game back from the same list. Final Score: TCU 55 UAB 0 Players of the Week: Congratulations RB Graham Elliot 27 carries for 126 Yds, 1 Td QB Ike Palmer 15 of 17 for 235 Yards, 4 Tds, 0 Int WR Ellis Twisp 6 receptions for 105 Yds, 2 Tds RB Wayne Lawton 12 carries for 53 Yds, 2 Tds Injuries were confined to: TE John Guthrie DOUBTFUL-5, Pulled Groin WR Karl Childers OUT-4, Herniated Disk Year to Date:
Recruiting: We have our first acceptance of a scholarship offer from Texan Rodney Canady, the #20 OG in the nation. We now have 6 players visiting, 2 of whom are top 100 recruits. On the down side, 7 recruits chose other schools to attend next year, including Lamar Wight, the #1 recruit in the nation, who chose to attend Rutgers. An update on those visiting Ft. Worth:

WEEK 8
The Game:
Anyway, noone could hear the Squid very well, nor could the phraseology used by the Squid be understood by the Frog fans at the game. When the Squid was done, noone knew and, as a result, the Guiness Book of World Records recorded a 19 minute, 12 second length for the National Anthem by the Colossal Squid, thus setting a new record and entering the Squid in the pantheon of great singers, along with Madonna, Gilbert O'Sullivan and Bill Clinton (or is it Delbert McClinton?). As for the actual game, CB Marty Dotson returned the first pass thrown by Green Wave QB Otis Jackson 58 yards for a score. Tulane countered on ther next possession, driving 52 yards for what would turn out to be their only score of the game, a 28 yard run by RB Chris "Bull" Durham. The Horned Frogs then scored 17 points in the 2nd quarter on a K Vincent Boo 36 yard field goal and two touchdowns by RB Graham Elliot, who ended the day crossing the goal line 4 times for tds. QB Ike Palmer had an off day passing, but did not throw an interception and was sacked only once on the day. The second half was very boring, save for Elliots' last 2 touchdowns and an interception by CB Gus Parton. Coach Purple said "We did not play too well today, but even so, to win by 31 shows the talent we have. We should play better if we want to keep our poll position. There are 9 undefeated teams in the nation, including Memphis, so any drop in play will cost us bowl positions every week." Final Score: TCU 38 Tulane 7 Players of the Week: Congratulations RB Graham Elliot 29 carries for 150 Yds, 3 Tds **National Offensive Player of the Week** QB Ike Palmer 12 of 21 for 173 Yards, 1 Tds, 0 Int Injuries were confined to: none Year to Date:
Recruiting: Three top 100 players signed with TCU this week in a truly unbelievable, but welcome, outcome. We were so sure QB Irv Ericson was going elsewhere we did not even list him in our update, nor was he visiting Ft. Worth (miracles DO occur, as we had hoped). S Troy Paris we were expecting to sign, but you just never know, and WR Otis Mueller was emphasis Prestige, so we had given a "fat chance" tag last week as we were 8th in line to snag him. Maybe these three will spread the word and bring more top recruits our way. In The Fold:
An update on those visiting Ft. Worth: the visits have commenced around the country, as 20 recruits are coming to town. An update on selected players:

WEEK 9
The Game:
Except they won. Without much difficulty, at that. RB Graham Elliot scored on a 78 yard run, the longest in his career. S Ralph Mahoney returned an interception 92 yards for a score in the 4th quarter. TCU had only 5 penalties on the day, their lowest total in a game in 3 years. P Scottie Britton averaged over 40 yards a try, pinning the Bearcats back in their territory all day. ILB Hardy Singleton had 12 tackles and 3 assists on the day, helping stop the many drives Cincinnati had. All day, it seemed, Cincy was on the move, but only made the red zone 3 times for all their drives and yards. "We had a poor effort today," Coach Purple summarized. "Our offense sputtered much of the game, and our defense had their worst effort of the year. Give Cincinnati credit. I would say we were outcoached today. Fortunately, our talent allowed us to pull out a victory, despite everything." Final Score: TCU 41 Cincinnati 19 Players of the Week: Congratulations RB Graham Elliot 27 carries for 173 Yds, 1 Td WR Gino Pauly 7 receptions for 102 Yds, 1 Td Injuries were confined to: S Rondell Riekens QUESTIONABLE-2, Sprained Knee OLB Marvin Washington PROBABLE-2, Bruised Shoulder FB Kelvin Patton PROBABLE-2, Bad Cold Year to Date:
Recruiting: Another 4 future Frogs sign-on, including 3 top 100 players. Marvin Carig overlooked the name problem we had a few weeks ago and opted for Ft. Worth. We landed the #1 punter in the land and 2 defensive line projects for a couple of years down the road. We lost out on 2 major players, 9 total for the week. Our center recruits have abandoned us, so we will get a couple more o-linemen and make one into a center if we need to. If we don't land a couple of LBs soon, we will be forced to take some really low rent guys. We MUST have 2 LBs in the class, even if they suck. In The Fold:
An update on those visiting Ft. Worth: the visits have commenced around the country, as 16 recruits are coming to town. An update on selected players:

WEEK 10
The Game:
For the second week in a row, TCU played like a second division team, eeking out a meager 17 first downs on 312 total yards. Fortunately, Houston faired even worse, totaling 14 first downs and 239 total yards. The key to the game turned out to be the inability of the Cougars to convert on 4th down, which they tried to do on 3 seperate occasions. Each time, the Purple People Eater defense of TCU stoned Houston, including possessions ending at the Frog 38 and 24 yard lines. Horned Frog secondarymen also came away with 2 Ints, one ending a drive in Frog territory. The only touchdown of the game came in the 2nd quarter on a QB Ike Palmer to FB Kelvin Patton 9-yard pass following perhaps the most important play of the day. After being stopped at the Houston 43, P Scottie Britton pooched a crappy 17 yard effort to the 26, where Cougar return man Dexter Batteaux caught the ball and returned 7 yards to the Cougar 33. OT Everett Atkins jarred the ball loose and TE John Guthrie recovered. Four plays later, Palmer hit Patton for the score and a 13-3 halftime lead. A fourth quarter Houston field goal narrowed the score to 13-6, but the Cougs could mount no game-tying drive and TCU had their perfect record saved. "We are still playing like SHIT," said a pissed Coach Purple after the tilt. "We will lose to someone for sure if this continues. We, as coaches, must watch film 24-7 until the problems are resolved. Why we cannot run people into the ground with the o-line we have is a mystery. With Memphis losing last week to Houston, we knew it would be a huge test, yet we still came out like pussies." Final Score: TCU 13 Houston 6 Players of the Week: Congratulations RB Graham Elliot 32 carries for 123 Yds, 0 Td QB Ike Palmer 15 of 25 for 188 Yds, 1 Td, 1 Int Injuries were confined to: OLB Gino Sanford OUT-5, Hyperextended Elbow Year to Date:
Recruiting: Two recruits were added to the list of commitments for the Frogs this week as a linebacker finally accepted, along with a CB. Not top 100, but welcome anyway as they are both in the top 20 at their positions in the national rankings. Anytime players are in the top 20 at their position, you have to feel as though you are keeping in step with the top programs in the country, at least potentially. In The Fold:
An update on those visiting Ft. Worth: 14 recruits are coming to town in our attempt to fill the final 6 spots in this years recruiting class. While most are not high ranking, they are the best that remain at the positions we need. An update on selected players:

WEEK 11
The Game:
The game started well for TCU as the defense held the Cadets and, following the punt, the Frogs began their first possession on their 32 yardline. 7 plays later, TCU found the endzone on a 19 yard pass from QB Ike Palmer to WR Ellis Twisp, and a 7-0 lead. The game see-sawed back and forth, Army kicking a field goal, TCU scoring on a Palmer to WR Gino Pauly 5 yarder, and Army scoring after a 49 yard drive following a poor punt. TCU returned the kickoff to their 34 and, on 1st down, RB Graham Elliot began the task of shelving the Cadets hope for victory with a 66 yard scamper for a TD. TCU had a 21-10 halftime lead and some good momentum going into the 2nd half. The Frogs put the game away on the first possession of the 2nd half, marching 72 yards in 11 plays and taking 6 minutes off the clock before Palmer found an open Twisp once more, 28-10, TCU. At that point, Army began to crumble as the Frogs poured it on, with Palmer scoring on a short run, K Vincent Boo kicking a field goal, and back-up RB Wayne Lawton running 51 yards late in the game to end the scoring. Final Score: TCU 45 Army 10 Players of the Week: Congratulations RB Graham Elliot 30 carries for 198 Yds, 1 Td QB Ike Palmer 15 of 23 for 226 Yds, 3 Tds, 1 Int WR Ellis Twisp 4 receptions for 63 Yds, 2 Tds WR Karl Childers 5 receptions for 97 Yds, 0 Td Injuries were confined to: WR Karl Childers DOUBTFUL-7, Hip Pointer ILB Hardy Singleton PROBABLE-1, Bruised Shoulder Patton RECOVERED Washington RECOVERED Riekens RECOVERED Year to Date:
Recruiting: Only one new player accepted an offer from your Frogs this week as Mack Beuter, a WR from NY, accepted our scholarship. If we do not get any of the 5 very good to decent players updated below, this class will be a dissapointment after the early success in luring top 100 guys to Ft. Worth. Why is it that players at certain positions will not come to TCU no matter how much we outclass other teams at the recruits emphasis? Sometimes, Coach Purple can only scratch himself and wonder. In The Fold:
An update on those visiting Ft. Worth: 9 recruits are coming to town in our attempt to fill the final 5 spots in this years recruiting class. Four of the 9 are OLB candidates. An update on selected players:
