Heart attack kills Murray man who inspired 'Rain Man'

Kim Peek, the Murray man who inspired the 1988 movie, "Rain Man," died Saturday of a heart attack. He was 58.

Peek, a savant with mental handicaps, had an extraordinary gift of memory and recall. Peek had committed 9,000 books to memory, as well as so many gigabytes of facts that he often was called Kim-puter. NASA made him the subject of MRI-based research.

Since the movie, which starred Dustin Hoffman, Peek has traveled the world mesmerizing children and adults with his mental abilities. In the past 21 years, he has spoken to more than 64 million people and traveled nearly 3 million air miles, his father Fran Peek said Monday afternoon.

In recent weeks, Kim Peek had suffered from an upper respiratory infection, according to his father.

Peek's funeral will be Dec. 29. Arrangements are pending.

I saw him on a Science Channel show. His father and he would go to the library and Kim would just read books and literally remember everything he read. It was amazing. The show had him meet another savant and they spent the afternoon in a library asking each other questions.

Please tell me this was an intentional Rainman reference. If not, it's still hysterical.
