So absurd it needs it's own thread: Lane Kiffin tells kid he'll be pumping gas ..

.. For not signing with UT.

Quote:
Tennessee coach Lane Kiffin had some stinging last words for Alshon Jeffrey, one of the nation's top wide receivers, according to ESPN.com. Jeffrey of St. Matthews, S.C., signed with South Carolina last month after an intense recruiting battle with Southern Cal and Tennessee. According to ESPN's Chris Lowe, "Kiffin told Jeffrey that if he chose the Gamecocks, he would end up pumping gas for the rest of his life like all the other players from that state who had gone to South Carolina."

Atlanta Journal Constitution

It's funny because I thought Al Davis was to blame for Kiffin being fired, but this guy is a raving lunatic.

What an odd, odd world when Al Davis ends up being right. Never would have guessed that in a million years.

Isn't Lunatic a requirement to be a BCS-level head football coach?

Can't wait to bump this thread in 4 years when Jeffrey is either

A: Pumping gas or

B: Winning NFL Rookie of the Year.

What's even more wierd is that it wasn't even an "intense recruiting battle". Jeffery was signed with SC all year and then switched to the other SC on signing day. Kiffin is a lunatic and I see sanctions very soon in UT's future I'm afraid. He cannot keep his mouth closed and not in the good way, he's just making a complete fool of himself.

Also, this might sound like the bitter rantings of a spurned fan, but I don't think Alshon will be winning rookie of the year anytime soon with his 40 time (not that he won't be a very effective college player) Maybe he can bulk up and be a nice option at TE at the next level

"Pumping gas" is still an occupation in this country? I don't think I've seen a full-service gas station in 20 years.

Two states (NJ and Oregon I believe) still have all full service gas stations.

At a minimum, in NJ it is against the law to pump your own gas.

Kiffin has certainly made his share of PR blunders since we has been hired as the coach of UT. They really need to reign him in before it's too late.

It's funny (well, not really funny given what I'm about to bring up) but people used to rip on NJ for this...until that nutjob started sniping people down in your area while they were pumping their own gas.

Those can be deemed lateral moves, at best, for someone going to South Carolina.

I haven't seen any stations that advertise self-serve and full-serve prices, for sure (never been to Oregon or New Jersey), but most stations will still pump gas for people who are unable to do so themselves (generally disabled folks who can't easily get in and out of the car).

I imagine all stations would do that unless they wanted to deal with an ADA lawsuit.

I don't recall anyone saying, "damn, I wish someone else pumping my gass so he got shot instead of me."

I also only think half(ish) of the people were at gas stations. well, let me wiki it: mowing grass at an auto dealer, pumping gas (1), getting off a bus, vacuuming car at gas station (2), walking down the street, arriving at middle school, pumping gas (3), pumping gas (4), pumping gas (5), at home depot, at steakhouse, bus driver shot standing outside his bus

I may have missed some in my skimming. 5-7 by my count (although it looks like 13 were shot, so I missed somebody)

Not that this was the point you were trying to make, but I somehow felt the need to reply in this way.

Come on, they don't do that here in SoCal, you know that... It's hard enough to get an attendant out of their little fortress!

As for Oregon I can confirm they pump your gas, and it's not full service, they don't accept tips!

I'm kind of confused with this. Where does the ADA get off saying that an attendant has to help you pump your gas into you car? I'm all about helping people that need help and am all for being a nice guy, but it sounds to me that some people just expect too much if the ADA is getting involved in crap like that....

But as for this kid, all Kiffin was doing was being a realist, he wasn't going to blow smoke and lie to the kid. Glad he told the kid the truth!

If you don't think the ADA gets involved in this stuff, you're very naive. If you just don't agree with it, that's a different story altogether.

You don't have any idea how much my job sucks because of accessibility.

Oh no I know they do, I just think they waste their resources on the wrong things... It's pathetic how many lawsuits they bring on small businesses. Anyway, I don't want to derail the topic at hand.

Lane Kiffin is my idol!

There are plenty of towns in Massachusetts that it is illegal to pump your own gas, and they require full service gas stations only.

I never had been to a full service gas station until I moved up north. Now I love them when it is -5 degrees out.

Just an FYI I'm not trying to be a dick to people with disabilities, it's just frustrating seeing the lawsuits here in California the litigation capital of the world and lawyers making millions off of it.

Doesn't register a blip for me. I'm sure Spurrier's had nothing but nice things to say about Tennessee during his career.

I can't believe he went with the retro insult. Thats something my dad would say. He could have at least brought it into the 2000s and said the Kid would be working at Wal Mart the rest of his life or something.

I've normally been supportive of ex Raiders coaches who didn't work out cause Davis is pain to work for, but in this case he was right.

FWIW Kiffin flatly denies this particular comment.
This time, Lane Kiffin says he's innocent - SEC - ESPN

In fairness to Kiffy, who I didn't like as a hire & who I've already to shake my head at more than once in his brief tenure, it wouldn't be unheard of for a recruit to creatively paraphrase something said during recruiting (or outright make shit up for that matter) and turn it into a bigger story either by accident or on purpose. And it definitely wouldn't be groundbreaking for a high school coach to generate a little publicity for themselves by getting involved in a story without regard to reality (see Tucker HS coach silliness & Steve Spurrier as the most recent example).

Now for all I know it's exactly what Kiffin said & he's just shooting off another toe by denying it now with the inevitable recording of his remark forthcoming shortly. But his denial being the truth isn't out of the realm of reasonable possibility to me either.

Every time I see Kiffin on SportsCenter he's doing some press conference basically as a standup routine. He may be considerably higher on himself than he has a right to be.

It's weird - the full serve places in this area tend to be independently owned and actually have cheaper gas than the self-serve places.

Eh... if no one else is in the store, I'll help out, but since I usually work alone other customers come first. I've been told that technically I'm not supposed to pump gas for customers, so I don't think anyone has ever sued the company (Cumberland Farms) over it. I've pointed this out multiple times to one elderly woman in particular - that there are full-serve stations nearby and she should go to them, but I'm pretty sure she has alzheimers. Which bring up the other part - people in wheelchairs or on crutches I can understand, although I'm not sure how I'm supposed to figure out from inside the store that's the case - but for elderly people who can't figure out how to run a credit card or pump gas, they shouldn't be on the road.

I made fun of two girls from Jersey all the time in college. One at least admitted when we stopped at a gas station she didn't know how to pump gas, but the other one just let her roomates/friends drive her car around whenever they wanted as long as they put the gas in it. As far as I know she still doesn't know how to.

Thankfully here we don't have to deal with the bulletproof glass and spin-around things that fortress implies, but why should I bother coming outside? It's a simple process and the instructions are all written clearly on the pumps. Other retailers don't come outside unbidden to help you.

Embarassingly enough, not long after I got my license a buddy and I drove down to U of Maryland to visit a couple of our older friends. On the way back, going through Delaware I figured I'd stop for gas...pulled into an empty station off 95, pulled up to the pump and we proceeded to just wait there wondering why no one was helping us. When we put 2 and 2 together, we just got back on the road and barely made it to a station in NJ.

I remember when I was 17 and drove this girl down to Maryland and was surprised to learn that I had to pump my own gas. However, I didn't think the pump was that hard to figure out. After living down in Louisiana for 9 years, I get very inpatient waiting for an attendant when I'm back visiting family in New Jersey.
