Japan - The Rising Sun: An EU4 AAR
The year is 1444 and Japan is fractured among the many Daimyos, vassals of the true Japanese state. The Lords of the many houses of Japan are constantly at odds with one another, while Shogun Yoshimasa Ashikaga rules in Kyoto. His ultimate goal is to unify all of the Daimyos of Japan under one flag, one nation.
On mainland Asia, Ming is the ruling force of this world. They are massive and overwhelming in their size and scope. An unmatched military of the East. Off of the Japanese island's immediate west coast is the kingdom of Korea and north of them are the various Manchurian Khanates of Jianzhou, Haixi, Korchin and Yeren. To Japan's south is Ryukyu, who occupy Okinawa. To the north are the Ainu tribe, making up modern day Japan's northernmost island, as well as the Kurils. Can the Daimyos be brought under one flag? Can there be peace through the island nation so that they may prosper and stand the test of time? And so we begin...
The main objective is to unify Japan into one nation. Secondary objectives are to begin colonization of the spice islands of southeast Asia. Tertiary objectives are to colonize into Siberia if possible. November 1444 Current Mission” Create a Proper Fleet Royal Marriage We have entered a Royal Marriage with Takeda, Shiba and Hosokawa. A diplomat has been ordered to Ming to improve relations. December 1444 A diplomat has been sent to Takeda to improve relations. March 1445 Herald from Yamana Yamana has declared war upon their new enemy Hosokawa. They cite 'Sengoku' as their Casus Belli! And the infighting has begun. June 1445 Herald from Ouchi Ouchi has declared war upon their new enemy Hosokawa. They cite 'Reconquest' as their Casus Belli! Herald from Hatakeyama Hatakeyama has declared war upon their new enemy Hosokawa! They cite 'Sengoku' as their Casus Belli! January 1446 New Generation of Samurai A new generation of Samurai has come of age. The relative peace with which we have been blessed during the past few years has caused the young generation to grow up soft, and more disposed to administrative tasks than to the Art of War. We could accept this development, or call for a return to more military virtues. Shogun Ashikaga has decided that Japan could use more administrators. +30 Administrative Power May 1446 Mission Complete: Create a Proper Fleet! +5.0 Navy Tradition +5 Prestige (9) Current Mission: Improve Our Prestige! October 1446 Unhappiness Among the Artisans Conflicts and protests over taxes, corporations, trade and customs policies are becoming quite frequent and could result in a sharp drop in our industrial production if we don't handle the situation correctly. Shogun Ashikaga has decided that abolishing a tax would be the best course of action. -15.77 ducats (-2.64) November 1446 Herald from Takeda Takeda has declared war upon their new enemy Uesugi! They cite 'Sengoku' as their Casus Belli! February 1447 We have maxed our relations with Ming. Herald from Hatakeyama Hatakeyama has declared war upon their new enemy Uesugi! They cite 'Sengoku' as their Casus Belli! April 1447 A diplomat heads to Hosokawa to improve relations. December 1447 Unruly Samurai The prevailing peace of the past few years has left many within the Samurai caste without work and with idle hands. These idle hands have no found an employment in exploiting and oppressing the local peasant population. These Samurai need to be dealt with, and we are the ones who need to deal with them. Shogun Ashikaga finds these Samurai useful. +60 Administrative Power October 1448 Diplomatic Insult Conflicts sometimes erupted following diplomatic insults. Shogun Ashikaga vows that he won't forget this sleight. Japan gains a Diplomatic Insult Casus Belli on Imagawa. January 1449 The Japanese - Imagawa War of Honor Following the incredulous insult of Shogun Ashikaga from Lord Noritada Imagawa, the Japanese leader decided to make an example of his vassal to the other Daimyo lords of Japan. Now, Imagawa had an ally in Lord Hatakeyama, but with the rest of Japan's Lords siding with the Shogun, the battle was going to be an uphill one for Lord Imagawa. By mid-January the Imperial Army had reached Imagawa's Suruga province. March 1449 An Heir to the Throne! Asahito (5/4/4) is the new Heir to the Throne. The succession is safe. August 1449 Siege Victory! The Siege of Suruga is over after 205 days! March 1450 End of the Japanese – Imagawa War of Honor (January 1449 – March 1450) With the provinces of Hatakeyama and Imagawa fully under Japanese occupation, Shogun Ashikaga and Lord Imagawa have sat down to hash out a peace accord. Shogun Ashkiaga has demanded Imagawa's full annexation. The peace will cost Japan 50 diplomatic power. With the Diplomatic Insult Casus Belli, Japan gains 2.0 prestige (19) and suffers 5.8 aggressive relations expansion penalty.

October 1452 Yoshimasa Embarrasses the Court Shogun Ashikaga committed an absolute faux pas today in front of the court and a few foreign dignitaries. The repercussions of this will take years to repair. -1 Stability (-1) March 1453 National Epic Our subjects have taken to telling tales and legends about Yoshimochi Ashikaga. The legend says that in Japan's darkest hour, he will return to our nation, and deliver it from evil. Regardless of the truth in that statement, we could use this in our propaganda. Shogun Yoshimasa Ashikaga loves a good story, especially those about grandfathers past. Japan gets 'National Epic' for 20 years, giving the following effects: Yearly Prestige: +1.00 -10 Administrative Power -4.44 ducats (60.15) May 1453 With the opportunity to diplomatically annex Takeda coming in the next 18 months, we have sent a diplomat there to improve relations. Provinces Settsu Base Tax: 6.0 Production: Chinaware Awa Base Tax: 4.0 Production: Grain Tosa Base Tax: 2.0 Production: Fish It will be easier to improve as a nation if vassals are diplomatically annexed much like Hosokawa was. Taking a province like Suruga from Imagawa makes it more difficult to improve our administrative levels because we have to use valuable administrative points to core the province. Uesugi is the next obvious target for annexation. They have four provinces, potentially five when their wars with Takeda and Date end. For now, it is about building relations diplomatically so that we may advance the cause of uniting Japan under one banner. However, the one problem with annexing multiple Daimyos too quickly is that relations will quickly deteriorate and could lead to some of the Lords trying to declare independence from our rule. It will be a delicate balance. August 1456 A diplomat heads to Uesugi to improve relations. October 1456 Non-Enforcement of Ordinances Monarchs ruled by issuing ordinances but they were almost powerless to enforce them. Enforcement depended upon the local powers (nobles or city government) that would not always be as vigilant as the monarchs would have desired. Shogun Yoshimasa has decided to let the local nobles handle it. +10.00 unrest in Mino province. December 1456 A Beloved Heir Dies A strange fever has claimed the life of your beloved heir, Asahito. As the court sheds its clothes for blacker garments, it strikes you what a frail and transient thing life can be. Just as your thoughts are about to turn to the eternal, a young maid catches your eye... “In the arms of the Lord, I find solace.” Asahito dies. A Temple is built in Musashi province. January 1457 Mutsu province, which was Lord Date's lone province has been annexed by Lord Shiba. July 1458 Royal Marriage Shogun Yoshimasa has entered a royal marriage with Lord Ouchi's family. August 1458 An Heir to the Throne! Ietsugu (5/1/3) is the new heir to the throne. The succession is safe. September 1458 Uesugi has ended their war with Takeda by taking the province of Kai. Kai is where Mount Fuji is located. The province is also rich with gold. A diplomat has been sent to Shiba to improve relations. October 1458 Unhappiness Among the Merchants Conflict and protests over taxes, corporations, port duties, navy requisitions, trade and customs policies were quite frequent and often had counterproductive effects. Shogun Yoshimasa has decided to remove the troublemakers. -2.50 Mercantilism September 1459 Administrative Technology Advance! Once they entered the war with Imagawa way back when, they forfeited their Daimyo status within feudal Japan and became an independent state. September 1462 A diplomat has been sent to Uesugi to improve relations. November 1462 Plague! Epidemics in the early-modern era were far deadlier than wars or even famine. Diseases that with modern medicine are relatively harmless, like smallpox or flu, took a heavy toll whenever they struck, especially among infants. Current Mission Incorporate Ouchi October 1472 Administrative Technology Advance! National Ideas (4) Choosing the direction a country is going to take is perhaps the toughest choice a ruler will ever face. National ideas are the concepts that will shape our country for years to come. Bonus Effect: Allows Another Group of Ideas We have unlocked the Exploration Ideas idea group. Exploration Ideas Advance! Colonial Ventures Enables us to send more colonists to uncharted lands. Bonus Effect: Colonists: +1 Diplomats have gone to Shiba and Ouchi to begin the process of annexation. Japan is five years from being united! November 1472 Local Pretender Rises In order to ensure the glory of our country we have had to restrict local privileges. The problem with privileges is that people get very attached to them for sentimental reasons. Now, some power hungry idiot has declared himself the true ruler of our country, and many hopefuls flock to his banner because he has promised to restore local privileges. Shogun Yoshimasa wants the pretender's head! A Revolt! Japanese Pretender Rebels have risen up in Settsu! The rebels are loyal followers of Yoshikatsu Chosokabe, who styles himself Yoshikatsu I and lays claim to the Japanese throne. Should he die, the rebellion dies with him. December 1472 The Pretender has been defeated in Settsu and his head now sits upon a pike in Kyoto. March 1473 Death of Shogun Yoshimasa (Reigned from November 1444 – March 1473) The legacy of Yoshimasa is left incomplete. His ultimate goal of unifying Japan was just a few scant years from being realized. He gained a vassal in Ainu and advanced the Japanese cause, but his ending feels just a bit too early for his ambitions. Regency! Shogun Yoshimasa Ashikaga has decided to die a little too soon. His heir is not quite ready to assume the role of monarch. A Regency Council from the upper nobility is ruling our nation. While we await the ascendancy of our new Shogun, we are limited in our diplomatic choices. -1 stability (0) Royal Marriage Our royal vows with Ouchi and Shiba have been restored. June 1473 We are sending a colonist to the province of Kelang, which is one of three provinces on what is modern day Taiwan. He will arrive in August. August 1473 A New Shogun! Ietsugu I Ashikaga (5/1/3) will now rule our glorious nation! October 1473 New Rivalry! Korea has announced Japan as their new rival. August 1474 Native Assimilation in Kelang Some of the local natives have been assimilated into the colony's population. With the additional population, we have a lot bigger faith in the feasibility of Kelang. Gain 100 population in Kelang. September 1474 Influenza! Rumors say that sailors came back from a trip sick like hell, and the ones who didn't die onboard infested the whole city with their disease. It is time to act before the whole country dies from coughing and cold sweat. The Regency Council has made the decision to quarantine the port and let them die. Yamato gets 'Quarantined Influenza' for one year, giving the following effects: Local Trade Power: -100.0% Goods Produced: -50.0% Local Tax Modifier: -50.0% Local Manpower Modifier: -50.0% November 1474 Large Revolt Although we are well aware that no one likes paying taxes, you would think that people would have the sense to realize that glorious victories on the battlefield require a little more taxation. It seems we will have to explain it to them. 5 Peasant regiments rise up in revolt in Kozuke! December 1474 Our army has defeated the revolt in Kozuke. August 1475 We have pulled our diplomat out of the annexation of Shiba. Our Diplomatic Power was struggling and the annexation hit a standstill. October 1475 We have sent a diplomat to Shiba to maintain positive relations. November 1475 Higashiyama Culture A new culture has been spreading throughout the land, based on the ideals and aesthetics of Zen Buddhism and the concept of wabi-sabi, beauty in simplicity. The tea ceremony, ikebana – flower arrangement, Noh drama and sumi-e painting have become increasingly popular. Shogun Ietsugu is encouraging the growth of Higashiyama Culture. -61.24 (731.87) ducats Japan gets 'Higashiyama Culture until the death of Ietsugu, giving the following effects: Administrative Technology Cost: -5.0% Diplomatic Technology Cost: -5.0% -20 Administrative Power An Heir to the Throne Tomohito (4/0/3) is the new heir to the throne. The succession is safe. May 1476 Bringing in Marriageable Women A pioneer colony is very much a man's place, but as a colony develops we look to switch growth from emigration to new births. The colonial company responsible for Kelang has arranged a number of marriageable women, mostly widows, to travel to the colony to see that families are started. +200 population in Kelang +28 manpower in Kelang June 1476 Tea We have received reports from our colonial settlers in Kelang that the climate in combination with the fertile land makes the province a highly suitable area for tea production. Tea will now be produced in Kelang. November 1476 Good Government Policies Changes of policies when cleverly timed and made, were often well perceived by the people of the time beyond their actual efficiency, as a proof of the government's good will and interest in the welfare of the realm. Shogun Ietsugu wants to invest the money into the government. +25 Administrative Power +25 Diplomatic Power +25 Military Power February 1477 Integrating Ouchi When a smaller country gives up its independence to join a greater realm, there is a lot of adapting, and while some parts are easy, the administration of the realm will still need to expand to accommodate all possibilities. March 1518
We have sent a diplomat to Korea to improve relations. They could still yet prove to be an ally in the future. May 1518 Expansion Ideas Advance! Faster Colonists You cannot simply send colonists out and expect them to build a colony. There is a time consuming process of preparing the expedition with all the items they will need to survive in their new home. Using passed experience we can speed this process up. Bonus Effect: Global Settler Increase: +10.00 June 1518 Exploration Ideas Advance! Free Colonies Only so many people are willing to move abroad to expand our great colonial empire. However the promise of a plot of land to farm, in free hold, will encourage many more people to seek their fortune abroad. The nice thing about it is that there is plenty of land for everyone. Bonus Effect: Colonists: +1 Japanese Ideas Advance! Reformed Land Holding Traditionally land was assessed by size, but this failed to take into account that not all land is the same. From now on land will be valued according to the value of rice that can be grown on it. This will make it easier to ensure our vassals give us the troops they are supposed to provide. Bonus Effect: National Manpower Modifier: +20.0% A colonist has been sent to Tauisk province. Arquebus (6) Although hand cannons had been developed in China in the 12th century and had spread to Europe by the 14th, the weakness of these weapons reduced their battlefield utility. Light and reliable Arquebus was able to displace bow due to three main factors. It had better armor penetration, it was easier to train men to use it, and it did not rely on the strength of the user. Bonus Effect: Military Tactics: +0.25 Combat width increased by 2. Infantry Shock: +0.30 Enables Asian Steppe Cavalry Enables Samurai Cavalry All cavalry units have been updated to Samurai Cavalry December 1518 Gift to the State Good governance would sometimes prompt the nobility and the businessmen of the realm to donate cash to the treasury, out of pure patriotism or in exchange for the sales or transfer of honorary titles and positions. Empress Ina decides to spend the gift generously. +10 Prestige (38) January 1519 Colony Self-Sustaining Our colony in Okhotsk has grown enough to become self-sustaining! +1.2 Prestige (39) Work on a core in Okhotsk is underway. June 1521 Colonial Enthusiasm 'A new life awaits you in the colonies! A chance to start over in a golden land of opportunity and adventure!' Colonial life isn't like this, but people believe it and are racing to get to the colonies before the opportunities disappear. Japan gets 'Colonial Enthusiasm' for five years, giving the following effects: Settler Chance: +5.0% Global Settler Increase: +25.00 July 1521 Fish We have received reports from our colonial settlers in Tauisk that surrounding waters have a very rich supply of fish. Fish may be one of the most basic foods available but it's nonetheless an important resource. Fish will now be produced in Tauisk. October 1521 Integrating Chukchi When a smaller country gives up its independence to join a greater realm, there is a lot of adapting, and while some parts are easy, the administration of the realm will still need to expand to accommodate all possibilities. Japan gets 'Annexed Subjects' for 10 years, giving the following effects: Diplomatic Reputation: -3.00 +5.0 Prestige (52)
