GAME 32 - Sunday, May 6th - Radio Broadcast

Curveball, breaking to the outside...
Lazy ground ball to the right side
It'll be a very tough play for Potpie
He picks it up, throws to
Hunter covering first
Not in time as Burkett beats the throw

Base hit to right for Keeler
Burkett is racing towards third...
The throw is going to third...
Burkett is safe at third!
And Keeler advances to second on the throw

Base hit to center for Kelley
Burkett scores
Dode Criss will send the runner home...
The throw is cut off...
And that allows the run to score

Kelley inches slowly away from the bag
Hunter continues to hold the runner close

Swung on...and it's in the
air to the left side
Backing just a bit is Ton
And he pulls it in
With one down, up next is Honus Wagner
To be followed by Jake Beckley

Low inside fastball, at the knees...
Cut on...
Wagner rips a single to right field...
Pflaggstettler takes it on one bounce...
With his afterburners on,
Kelley heads into third ahead of the throw

Wagner inches away from the base
Big bender...
Wagner is off to the races
Bullock is up, firing...
SAFE...
The throw was too late

Big slow curve...
And it's in there, strike three
That's the second out of the inning

Swung on and missed...
Duffy is down on strikes
That's three outs, side retired

Long fly to center
Duffy has a long run...
He's there and hauls it in
Tucker is retired on a fairly deep fly
That's one away

The pitch is just inside
and Nights holds up
Bresnahan points down at
the first base umpire
He gives the "safe" sign
Jeff trots down to first... ball four

Strike three swinging!
And a quick peg to first by Bresnahan
Nights dives back in...
SAFE!
The first base ump says
Nights made it back
And there's two away

Bounced past the mound
Smooth pickup by Lajoie
Over to first
In time!
Score It: 4-3
That's it for FOFC in the
bottom of the 1st
Turn of Century still leads by 2
It's Turn of Century with 2, FOFC zip

Ripped to third, but right
at Palmer...easy out
One out
Due up next is Amos Rusie

Rusie rips one to center
He hit it right on the nose...
Tucker is off to the races...
He is coming fast...
He dives...

OUT!
Nice play by A. J. Tucker
Two down
Bullock asks for a new ball
He calls time and trots out to the mound
A conference going on between
Bullock and Hunter

Curve ball...
Burkett swings and misses by a mile
The bottom dropped out of that one!
A wicked pitch!
The Centurions go down in order, 1-2-3
After 1 and a half innings,

Turn of Century ahead 2 to 0

Palmer hits one toward short
Wagner fronts it...
Oops, he bobbles it...
Now he has the handle...
Long throw to first
Got Palmer by three steps!
Man, that is one slow truck horse
on the base paths!
With one gone
FOFC will have Billy Bullock coming up
A dangerous hitter, no doubt about it

Bullock swings and hits a shot
to deep left-center
Duffy and Burkett are converging
on the ball
Looks like Duffy has the best shot at it
He dives for it...
WOW! He's got it!
Fantastic play by Duffy
Two down
Rusie retires two in a row

Curveball in the dirt
Swung on and missed...Strike three
Bresnahan fumbles it,
but quickly recovers to tag Ton
Rusie disposes of FOFC
quickly in the bottom of the
2nd... they go down 1-2-3
After 2 innings,
it's 2-0 Turn of Century

Change up...
Keeler hits a fly ball to right
Pflaggstettler is under it...
He's got it
One up, one down

Kelley raps a hard shot...
CAUGHT!
That ball was lined right at third
Palmer just got his glove up in time
Great reflexes
Two down
Owen Hunter retires
the first two batters in a row

It's a wicked breaking ball
Out of the strike zone
Lajoie checks his swing
Bullock appeals to the first base umpire
Take a seat, Nap
That wraps up the inning
for Turn of Century
By the way, Turn of Century is 5
and 5 in their last ten games

A low bouncer to Lajoie
It bounces off his chest...
But he keeps it in front of him
Over to first...
Blade is out!
Shows the importance of good positioning
Rusie gets the first out in the inning

Breaking ball...
It darts down and out
as Hunter swings way over it
He was fooled completely
Bresnahan loses it momentarily,
but now finds the handle and tags
Owen as he was heading for the dugout
Two down
Amos Rusie retires
the first two batters in order

Struck him out on a fastball
Tucker goes down swinging
So that's it for FOFC
They fail to score against Rusie
In the bottom of the 3rd for FOFC
No runs, no hits and no errors

It's a smash over short
Nights leaps
Just over his outstretched glove
Wagner makes a wide turn at first
He will hold at first
The ball comes in quickly

Wagner glares menancingly out at Hunter
Wagner is one of the best base
stealers in the league
Quite an intimidator
Slow curve...
The speedy Wagner heads for second
Up and firing is Bullock...
The ball is waiting for Wagner
But he hook slides around the tag
He's in there with a stolen base!

Owen comes in there with a dipsy-do
And it freezes Beckley
He can't get the bat off his shoulder
and just watches it curve over
the outside corner...
STRIKE THREE!
FOFC gets the first out of the inning

Stretching out to his lead from second
The speedster, Wagner, could score easily
on a hit to the outfield
Hunter spins and fakes a throw to second
Wagner dives back into the bag

Flyball to right
it's caught
Wagner might have a chance to move up...
Pflaggstettler makes the catch...
Wagner is tagging up at second...
He makes it to third easily

Drilled on the ground to the mound
Taken by Hunter
His throw to first
GOT HIM!
Score It: 1-3
That's all for Turn of Century
After 3 and a half innings
in FOFC this afternoon,
Turn of Century on top 2 to 0

Change-up, Nights is looking for it...
He smacks a deep fly to left-center...
Duffy is at the warning track...
Waits...
Off the fence!
It's a double for Jeff Nights

Pounded on the ground to third
Kelley grabs it
Over to Beckley
Got him!
Score It: 5-3
One away in the bottom of the 4th

Groundball down the line
That's into the outfield for extra bases!
Potpie coasts into second
He's got a double
Nights scores from second!

Grounded towards the bag
Kelley comes up with it
Over to first
In time!
Score It: 5-3
That's two away

That one is a grass cutter towards short
Wagner fronts it...
OOPS! It takes a big hop!
Honus manages to come up with it
on the heel of his glove
Rolls the ball into his free hand
On to first
It is off target...
Beckley one hops it into his glove
Out!
Beckley can't get out of the way
and Billy runs right into him
Nice play as that ball was thrown
on the rightfield side of the bag
Lucky the collision didn't hurt anyone
That retires the side
The All Stars score 1 run in the inning
After 4 innings, Turn of
Century on top 2 to 1

There's a ground ball into the hole
Palmer and Nights converge on it
It's picked by Nights who fires to first
OUT is the call
Close play!!
So one up and one gone

There's a shot off the
bat of Jesse Burkett
But it's right at Blade
who makes the catch of the line drive
Burkett throws his bat into
the dirt in disgust
That's two away
Nights comes over from his shortstop
position to say a few words to Hunter
Wee Willie Keeler will be next up...

Slider pounded into the
ground towards first
It's by the diving Potpie...
Blade chasing it down...
There will be no play
It's a base hit

Keeler studies Hunter intently...
Now he's walking away from the base
Hunter's move keeps Keeler guessing
He doesn't have a very good lead

There's a shot off the bat of Joe Kelley
But it's right at Nights
who makes the catch
Kelley throws his bat in disgust
That does it for Turn of Century
in the top of the 5th

Big bender...
Swung on...
Ton pops it straight up
Three players converging on it
And it will be Wagner making the play
One away...
Beckley is coming over to the mound...
He wants to chat with the pitcher...
Here comes Kelley also...
Now they return to their positions

Blade fights one off his fists
It's lined weakly to the left of third
Kelley is over quickly
Easy out
One more chance for FOFC this inning

Hunter swings and misses
STRIKE THREE!
Rusie strikes out Owen Hunter
That's all for the All Stars
After 5 innings in FOFC this afternoon,
Turn of Century ahead 2 to 1

Fastball...
Lajoie jumps all over it...
It's juiced to deep center
There goes Tucker after it
Racing hard...
He dives...
And he's got it!!!
Beautiful play by A. J. Tucker!
One down for Turn of Century
Honus Wagner is still in
the on-deck circle
and Jake Beckley is looking
for a bat in the dugout

STRIKE THREE, CALLED!
Two up, two down for Turn of Century

Good slider, inside part of the plate
Beckley gets the bat on it...
Slams a sharp grounder to the right side
Blade grabs it...
Throws to first...
OUT!
Hunter sets the Centurions down in order

Curveball, inside corner, low...
Swung on...
And lined to left for a base hit
No chance to get that one

The All Stars try the hit and run!
Rusie's fastball is ripped toward short
Wagner can't get to it!
It is into the outfield...
Tucker was off and running with
the crack of the bat
He is on his way to third...
They'll have a chance to get him...
Here's the throw...
SAFE!
A nice shot by Nights
and a nice piece of baserunning as well
So there are runners on the corners
for Persimmon Pflaggstettler
Turn of Century had to cover
for the steal attempt
But...
Nights was able to place one
"where they weren't"!

He misses outside
Ball four

Potpie reaches out and pokes it
on the ground to right
Base hit for Potpie
The game is tied!

The batter checks his swing
Here's the appeal
Palmer swung, that's strike three
Palmer isn't happy at all with that call
Rusie gets out number one...
The All Stars have something going

Fastball down low...
Bullock hits a grounder to short
Wagner takes it on the big hop
Flips it to Lajoie
Relay to first...
A lightning double play!
And that ends the threat by FOFC
as Bullock grounds in to an inning ending
twin-killing with the bases loaded
The All Stars go down in
the bottom of the 6th
After 6 innings at FOFC Stadium
here in FOFC,
We're all tied up at 2

Duffy pounds a grounder toward
Nights at short
Jeff moves in front of it...
Whoops... a bad bounce
But Nights stayed with it
Over to first and Duffy is retired
Nice play by the FOFC short stop
Turn of Century with one away
Hunter steps off the mound as
he waits for Roger Bresnahan to
come to the plate

It's a duck snort headed
towards the outfield
Nights is after it...
Running hard...
He snares it for the out
Excellent range shown on that play!
That's the second out of the inning
Time to check the scoreboard

Fastball... down and away...
Rusie just misses the corner... ball four
That's 3 walks given up by Rusie today

Rusie just misses outside
Ball four to Tucker

Nights pops it straight up
Two players are under it...
Who will take it?...
And it will be Wagner making the play
That is the third out for FOFC here
in the last of the seventh
The attendance has just been

Rodney can't believe the call
And barks at the home plate umpire
The ump points out at Rodney
Kelley takes first base

Kelley watches Rodney move...
He's moving away from the bag
Curve down at the knees...

Quickly out of his stance Bullock fires...
Kelley slides to the outside
and avoids the tag
He's safe

Base hit to left for Lajoie
Dode Criss will send the runner home...

Aggressive baserunning by
Turn of Century...
It's cut-off

Here's the play on the trail runner...
K. A. Ton throws the ball
away for an error!

Grounded towards the bag
Palmer comes up with it
Over to Potpie
Got him!
Score It: 5-3
And that retires the side

Pflaggstettler hits one on the
ground to the left side
Persimmon, who moves well,
is motoring to first
Kelley wings it quickly to Beckley...
OUT by a step

Jeeberoni Potpie is due up next

The pitch is just inside
and Potpie holds up
Bresnahan points down at
the first base umpire
He went around
That is strike three!

FOFC - Manager Update

I'm starting to get back into my normal routine following the long trip to Japan. I'm a horrible traveller and the jet lag or whatever it is has finally gone away. I'm up early and looking for my paper. After a couple of existing games that were extremely positive, to the point I decided to watch the highlights rather than read about it - I'm now looking for the paper to see what the other teams in the league did last night...

try to close the gap
To at least try to make it respectable

Outside fastball... lashed
at by Burkett...
Pop fly...Shallow right...
Dropping quickly...
Pflaggstettler pulls up, doesn't
want it to get by him
Base hit for Burkett...
As Pflaggstettler fields it on one bounce

Hit to third... and right at Fouts
He juggled that ball a bit, but held on
Lajoie is out
With one down, up next is Honus Wagner
To be followed by Jake Beckley

Swung on...and it's in the
air to the left side
Backing just a bit is Gunner
And he pulls it in
Two gone for Turn of Century

Grounded towards the bag
Potpie trots to the bag
Score It: 3
And that will do it for Turn of Century
FOFC wins 11 to 5
Williams gets credit for the win
Joss takes the loss
The hitting star for FOFC
was Persimmon Pflaggstettler
He was 3 for 4
He also knocked in 3 runs
And that wraps things up
So long from FOFC.

FOFC Manager Update

"Where is the paper," I ask after looking around for it for what I thought was long enough?

"It's on the floor in the den," my wife answers exasperatedly. "You couldn't find your head if it wasn't attached."

I ignore her comment, but also realize she's probably right. Still frustrated by the biting remark and my lack of focus in looking I ask, "Why is it on the floor in the den?"

"Because your 5 year old son has started reading the comics."

I want to complain, but Brett's reading is a good thing so I bite my tongue and start reading...

He gave up 1 hit and no walks without retiring a batter. Tommy Lasorda was understandably not very talkative after his team's tough loss. He quickly showered and changed and when asked about the game had a terse, yet polite response, 'Hey fellows, that game was a heart-breaker to lose. FOFC Manager Update

It's been a great start to the season. Alot better than I had hoped in my wildest dreams. I mean for crying out loud - we are 27 and 7. However, our team got, what I think was their first taste of the truly dominating pitchers in this league. I was incredibly impressed by Matty last night. I'd seen him work his stuff in the past, but he was almost unhittable last night. In fact, Babson, who had a bad first inning settled down and pitched extremely well after that, but Matty's stuff was so good you forget how good Babson pitched from the 2nd through the 5th.

I think the team was getting a little big for their britches. Maybe this game will sober them some. Hopefully so. We have quite a few road games still left on the schedule and those wins will be much tougher to come by.

Let's see what the paper says about last nights game...

FOFC Manager Update

Boy have we run into some good pitching lately. Again last night it was a pitchers dual with Mighty ending up on the short end of the stick. Hopefully the offense will get on track. I say, "Let's see if anybody got any closer to us with last nights loss."

My wife who was reading a book, looks up and says, "Great now you're talking to yourself."

Kronside can't come up with it!
Score It: E1
Bessho scores from third!
Wakamatsu takes third
Suzuki to first

Suzuki takes his lead
Kronside holds the ball...
Still holding the ball...
Spinning he fires it over to Gonzalez...
Suzuki dives back in...
SAFE!

Nomura swings and lifts one toward left
Ton drifts over slowly...
He is under it now...
And makes the easy catch...
And that wraps up the top of the 7th
Japanese League has 2 runs,
6 hits and no errors
While FOFC has one run,
one hit and 2 errors
Japanese League now has left 8 men on

It's time for the 7th inning stretch!

Nights hits it sharply on the ground...
into the hole at short
Matsubara dives for it...
He's up with it...
a strong throw to first...
GOT HIM!!!
A sparkling play by the short
stop, Makato Matsubara!
With one gone
FOFC will have Persimmon Pflaggstettler
coming up
A dangerous hitter, no doubt about it

Fastball... low and away, ball four
Bessho puts the tying run on base
Not a good idea

A high bouncer to Oh
He makes a one handed grab
Over to Matsubara for one...
Back to Oh for the deuce!
That is the third out for FOFC here
in the last of the seventh
The attendance has just been
announced at 49567

Saduharu Oh swings
He hits a long drive
This one may be out of here...
Back, back, back...
Tucker leaps and grabs it!
Oh is robbed of a homerun
with a great catch by Tucker
FOFC gets the first out of the inning

Kawakami pounds a grounder
toward Blade at second
Barrett moves in front of it...
Whoops... a bad bounce
But Blade stayed with it
Over to first and Kawakami is retired
Nice play by the FOFC second baseman
Two up, two down for Japanese League

Fastball, STRIKE THREE!
Kinugasa was frozen on that
fastball by Kronside
High and on the outside corner
He was looking for an off-speed pitch
Three down for Japanese League
Still a 1 run deficit for FOFC
Let me point out that
coming in to today's game
Japanese League is 3 and
11 in one run games
FOFC has a 13 and 3 record
in these tight contests

Palmer swings...
Hard groundball, left of third
It's by Kinugasa and skips
out to Wakamatsu
Palmer rounds first
The left fielder is after it.. cuts it off
and fires it in quickly to second
Palmer returns to first
as Tsutomu gets a nice
throw in to Kawakami

Base hit to center for Bullock
Third base coach Dick Howser
doesn't want to gamble
Nothing ventured, nothing gained...
Palmer will stay at second

Ton drives the ball to center
for extra bases
Palmer scores
Dick Howser will send the runner home...
The throw is coming home...
Aggressive baserunning by FOFC...
Not cut-off...
Yutaka Fukumoto throws the
ball away for an error!
Double for Ton

Blade takes the pitch...
That one is low for a ball... WAIT
The umpire says that one caught the knees
Blade is out on strikes
Sawamura gets the first out in the inning

Fastball... down and away...
NO! It's called a strike
And Kronside is outta there

It's a high fly into left
Wakamatsu ranges to his right
Reaches up, and takes it for the easy out
That's it in the bottom of the 8th
3 runs, 3 hits and one error
After 8 innings in FOFC,
FOFC on top 4 to 2

A high fastball...
Matsubara swings late...
He hits a routine pop just left of Nights
Jeff is under it...
And takes it in for the easy out
Matsubara was looking for
the breaking ball
Japanese League with one away
Kronside steps off the mound as
he waits for Eiji Sawamura to
come to the plate

Curveball in the dirt
Swung on and missed...Strike three
Bullock fumbles it,
but quickly recovers to tag Yazawa
Two down, HOF Players at bat
in the 9th inning...
Japanese League trails the All Stars by 2
The HOF Players are down
to their final out
Yutaka Fukumoto is due up
Bullock takes a trip out to the mound
He wants to discuss something
with Kronside
Now Bullock trots back

Nubber to the mound
Kronside grabs it
He throws wild!
Score It: Single + E1
Fukumoto to second

Swung on and missed...
Ochiai is down on strikes
And that will do it for Japanese League
FOFC wins 4 to 2
Kronside gets credit for the win
Knowles notches the save
Bessho takes the loss
The hitting star for FOFC
was K. A. Ton
He was 2 for 3 with a homerun
He also knocked in 3 runs
And that wraps things up
So long from FOFC.

FOFC Dynasty Update

Guys, I've fallen behind. Christmas parties, sick kids, and plain being worn out have conspired to put me behind. I'll try to catch up soon. I appologize for the delays.

What they all said.
You're doing it in part as a service to us, so we've got no complaints if that real life thing gets in the way sometimes!!!
