1846 Dispersal Draft

Ok, so we're going to contract:

Quote:
1. Milwaukee
2. Kyoto
3. Los Angeles
4. Philadelphia

Anyway, someone (a non-member actually) suggested it might be more fair to do some kind of dispersal draft rather than full-on FA release of everyone with no warning. So here's how this will work. It'll be an ongoing draft, essentially.

There will be at least one round. Basically, if we get through more, we'll keep going until free agency starts. Whoever is leftover gets dumped into the pool. The draft will start tonight at the deadline (so it gives everyone a chance to have read this and so I don't have to transfer anyone until after the post-season) and will continue through the weekend and so forth. FA starts on Tuesday, so it'll end on Tuesday.

Once it begins, you have 2 hrs to make your alloted picks. If you don't pick, we go to the next person. You can send me a preference list too, if you aren't going to be around to pick.

The order:

Quote:
1. Rio Grande
2. New York
3. San Diego
4. Carolina
5. Brooklyn
6. Chicago
7. Syracuse
8. Memphis

Basically you can go over the cap for this, since pretty much everyone is at the cap. We just all need to be back at the salary cap ($100m) by the time the regular season starts. Naturally you inherit a guy and his contract, so be mindful of that too.

With the 2 hr time limit, we should be able to get through 2-3 rounds before FA starts.

DRAFT RESULTS
ROUND 1
1. Rio Grande: SP Max Owen (PHL)
2. New York: SS Jay-Man Yun (LAX)
3. San Diego: OF Freddie Hurley (PHL)
4. Carolina: MR Elijah Henderson (KYO)
5. Brooklyn: Passed
6. Chicago: RF Johnny Ressano (LAX)
7. Syracuse: RF Taikan Hatsutori (PHL)
8. Memphis: 1B Henry Jones (MIL)

ROUND 2
1. Rio Grande: C Hector Flores (KYO)
2. New York: CF Corey Sanders (MIL)
3. San Diego: SP Edward Lyons (LAX)
4. Carolina: C William Messer (LAX/R)
5. Brooklyn: Passed
6. Chicago: SP Juan Salsa (MIL)
7. Syracuse: Passed
8. Memphis: 2B David Richardson (MIL)

ROUND 3
1. Rio Grande: SP Warner Armstrong (MIL)
2. New York: OF Michael Payne (KYO/R)
3. San Diego: C Mike Morrell (MIL)
4. Carolina: RF Dalton Wright (PHL)
5. Brooklyn: Passed
6. Chicago: 3B Clarence McIvor (LAX)
7. Syracuse: Passed
8. Memphis: 1B Nakazo Abe (LAX)

ROUND 4
1. Rio Grande: LF Mike Campbell (KYO)
2. New York: CF Quentin Jones (MIL/R)
3. San Diego: CL Carlos Freitas (KYO)
4. Carolina: RF Luis Hernandez (LAX)
5. Brooklyn: Passed
6. Chicago: SS Hollis Denton (PHL)
7. Syracuse: Passed

This contraction is not something I am looking forward to. I built a team the old fashioned way, and now basically every team is getting free access to a lot of talent. Yeah, I could improve by it too, but it undermines the whole process and plan that I have used to date.

I guess I'll try it and live with it, but I want to be on record as not liking it. I suppose you have no choice if you can't recruit anyone, but a sudden 33% reduction in the number of teams is not a positive note for a league that was small even before contraction.

It's a strong league. We're just cutting the wheat from the chaff. Right now, player movement is nil, FA is dead and it's operating more like a traditional league than an active fast- sim environment because there's really no way to build save for slow cook practices.

It's not unfair, everyone will access to the same talent and it's up to them to do what they want and you too. I mulled what would be best and I think we'll see a more energized league this way, which is what I was aiming for. We could've just kept owners squatting on teams, but I think it's going to create dogfights for pennants and that's how it ought to be.

Never said it was unfair.
We'll see how it goes.
I just don't like it.

Charlie Taylor is Philadelphia's LEGACY player. He's going to become a free agent and cannot be drafted. I was trying to think of the fairest way to deal with him and I think that's the most sensible idea.

What about a player who is due for free agency at the end of 1843? If we select someone like that, do we get to resign him at least for next year?

I will upload a post-dispersal draft file and give you the opportunity to offer extensions to draftees prior to free agency.

Carolina is skipped. When he comes back, he can select someone still on the board. Brooklyn doesn't have an owner, so they'll be passed too.

So with that, Chicago will select (via PM): RF Johnny Ressano, Los Angeles

Syracuse gets passed. For those who are passed, when you come back, provided the draft is still going on you can make your passed picks among whoever is left and I'll update it.

Memphis picks 2B David Richardson (MIL) via PM.

We'll start up again in the morning after San Diego goes. I sent Cole (CAR) a note to let him know. When he does get back, he can make 4 picks at once. Same for Syracuse and his back picks. This will be the last round, because I'll produce a file for you all once the 4th round is complete sometime tomorrow. My hope is to get that file out by tomorrow morning and then to run to the start of FA tomorrow night.

This is a big reason why I wish this league had an e-mail notification list for things as large as this.

I was kind of bummed after missing the playoffs last season and couple that with a busy weekend = a couple days of me not coming to these forums. It seems in that time I've missed a lot, as now all the teams who did make picks have taken advantage of a free shot to get players that I didn't have.

I will go on record with Joe in Chicago and say I am not in favour of this contraction either and I'm not just saying that because I didn't get to pick when everyone else did. I really hate leagues where teams are all loaded with talent, it kind of diminishes what talent actually is when the majority of teams have strongly-rated players at every position... And, when we have the talent pool of 12 teams dispersed between 8 teams, I think that's exactly what will happen. It becomes almost like a league of all-star teams.

As Joe said, we've all been building our teams in the normal way for many seasons and now all of a sudden it's a random influx of new players that will no doubt swing the balance of the league greatly.

I would have preferred to not even contract and just keep CPU teams as needed (who cares if they never win or are mismanaged? There are teams like that in real baseball as well).

Anyway, I'll take a look here in a bit and see if there's anything worthwhile left, but I would assume a majority of the impact players have already been snapped up.

It sends me replies when there are posts in a thread I've made but I don't at this point get notifications when new threads are made. I'll have to go find that option.

Regardless, I think something this big should have been given a bit more advanced notice than just posting a thread on a Friday and all a sudden once the draft starts, everyone has two hours to proceed.

If I knew say at the start of the season that there would be a dispersal draft, I would have planned to make sure I was around the forums to take part. Likewise, I woud have probably approached free agency a lot differently.

Going through these teams made me realize how much talent there is in this league, even in the crappy teams. I fear the league is going to turn into an 8-team all-star league.

It will eventually thin out, because that's how it goes. You all will see. I assure you I've done this before. And I think the all-star league will be a lot of fun for a few years. But I understand what you all are saying and I'll take it under advisement for future things to give you guys a heads up next time.
