I bum training camp up an extra hour for playbook study, hoping to get a couple more formations for our young QB Wisniewski.

Here's a visual look at the various QB options we have before us, more or less. With Wisniewski now really showing much growth (lack of a mentor hurting here?) I think it's probably time to give this position some serious thought. I think a look at the bars ought to help on that front:

So, my feeling is that all Wisniewski has going for him at this point is the various "creeper" indications. Two flat camps down, and he is still at a potential rating of only 25. Maybe at this rate he continues to gain a couple points a season if he remains our starter...eventually becoming, what, a 34/34 veteran without many specific skills that truly aid a gameplan? (His best bar is basically the avoid rush)
Duran looks like the guy who right now would probably be the most useful, I suppose. The rest are the usual ragtag gang of castoffs. Cooley might be interesting with those fleet feet (wildcat QB material) but is likely a pick machine forever, given his combines. So, I guess we have weaker prospects here than I had hoped when we had the strong initial camp from Wisniewski... I was hoping we'd be at something like 25/30 by now, and still counting out the steps ahead into the 40s or 50s perhaps. |

Two guys from this class who are personality conflicts. C Booth wasn't a tough cut after a -6 camp, but I really do like the looks of S Harrison. Even after a -5 camp Harrison still looks like a solid long term asset as a safety, return man, and special teamer. Would like to keep him, but I think the investment in chemistry is too important to dash that way.
I decide to move S Harrison to RB, where he actually looks to still be useful. He will get a shot maybe as our 3rd RB this year. I thought he would be an affinity, but i guess Jan 22 is in the wrong group...dang. |

I am thinking about splitting the starts this season between Duran and Wisniewski, at least to see if Duran demonstrates any more addition to the offense. Plan right now is to go with a slight derivation from Ben's "smash mouth" offensive gameplan posted publicly.

So... half a season in the bag behind Wisniewski running a smash-mouth offense behind a lot of 2TE formations and a fair bit of inside running. And, we remain thoroughly dreadful on the field. We're 0-8, Wiz sits with a 39.7 rating, and the backup Duran (with 44 attempts in reserve) has a rating of 99.4. The fans are furious, they demand the backup-- and they will get him. We'll also be without starting TE (and developing stalwart) Frederickson, who will be out with an injury. Frederickson is nothing much in the passing game (which for us is nothing much anyway) but is developing into a heck of a run blocker for us.
We'll carry forward with Duran behind center, and the same gameplan in place... |

Some quick thoughts on what players we have aboard from the first three seasons are likely to be here long term:
Position Group: QB Anchor Players/Solid Starters: Reserves Worth Long Term Spot: Tommie Duran (3x affinity, best performer so far) Special Teamers/Alternative Uses: Chemistry Centerpieces: Position Group: RB/FB Anchor Players/Solid Starters: Reserves Worth Long Term Spot: Special Teamers/Alternative Uses: FB Russell Small (gunner, ST, playable) Chemistry Centerpieces: FB Vernon Manning Position Group: WR/TE Anchor Players/Solid Starters: TE Peter Frederickson (great blocking TE, long snapper) Reserves Worth Long Term Spot: WR Gus Owens, WR Bucky Penxa Special Teamers/Alternative Uses: Chemistry Centerpieces: WR Edward Lee Position Group: OL Anchor Players/Solid Starters: Reserves Worth Long Term Spot: RG Rod McLain (67 Run Bl, affinity leader), LG Ryan Musum, LT Alex Beyer Special Teamers/Alternative Uses: Chemistry Centerpieces: Position Group: DL Anchor Players/Solid Starters: Reserves Worth Long Term Spot: NT Clarence Grebene Special Teamers/Alternative Uses: Chemistry Centerpieces: DE Justin Godfrey (66 Run D) Position Group: LB Anchor Players/Solid Starters: SLB Ray Israelson (quite solid other than Run D) Reserves Worth Long Term Spot: SILB Ben Brownlee (decent lower bars), WILB Bert Hanaki (66 Run D) Special Teamers/Alternative Uses: SLB Shannon Wynn (gunner, reserve coverage LB) Chemistry Centerpieces: Position Group: DB Anchor Players/Solid Starters: Reserves Worth Long Term Spot: CB Xavier Marx, CB Leon Ethridge, CB Juan Sawyer, S Quentin Rutter, S Antonio Lynch Special Teamers/Alternative Uses: Chemistry Centerpieces: S Otis Robinson So, that makes 22 players that I, more or less, figure to have around after another 5, maybe 10, seasons in one capacity or another. Obviously landing a serious creeper or otherwise very useful engine at any position changes the game there... but basically we're still waiting for most of our defensive line and our ball carriers. |

Disappointing affair so far. Even for the early stages, 0-16 and 32's across the board doesn't sound like your average IMT experience...
QB Robbie Everett - Probably has sense rush abilty and has a high Sole score lowish intelligence combo. RB Levon Malone - receiving skills, affinity(?), WR project? RB Harry Gaylor - probably overrated, but does seem to have a breakaway speed and hole recognition combo. RB Rod Bovee - 90+ elusiveness (RB2!), special teams, receiving skills, return skills are fake. TE Wally Jenkins - no way that 25/59 can be for reall, but worth a shot, no? WR Deon McLane - return man. WR Blaine Hanson - big play abilty is probably for real. OT Stan Klinger - interesting agility score. OT Rex Goldstein - decent agility score. OT Greg Kowall - okay 40-time. DE Leslie Barrett - run stopper. DE Jay Wynn - very impressive Solescore and agilty test combo. DE Ted May - pass rusher with play diagnosis. DE Wade Harding - play diagnosis with pass rushing. DT Alfred Yoder - pass rush technique, play diagnosis. DT Leon Mills - 40-time under 5.00. OLB Alex Hinds - pass defender? OLB Max Hansen - slightly overrated run defender. CB Ethan Rayburn - 47 position score. CB Leslie Davidson - 45 position score. S Jermaine Kohn - can't be for real, but with a 46 position score, who knows?

Do you have a sense of whether that kind of inexplicable pissed-off indicates "This guy is actually pretty good" or "This guy is actually better than the starter (which, on our team, does not mean that he is actually any good)" |

On most teams, this is most evident when the starter is, say, a 50/50 guy, and the pissed-off reserve is a 28/38 creeper. Then, I tend to take it as a signal that the young guy has some real room to grow. Here, I'm not really sure, but I definitely do still consider it a good sign that he's pissed. For instance, none of these other 15/40 stiffs are at all peeved about sitting behind a 15/25 starter. So even if those guys are *truly* 32/32 guys underneath, they don't ever seem to get heady about it. If that clarifies at all... |

So, we get a random super breakout...and it's from the...punter?!?!?!?? Really? That's a sick joke here. Nice move from WR Penxa, likely makes him a starter for a while. BUt nothing too serious from any of the rookies. Full report on its way momentarily. |

Ugh, just noticed the big hot on LB Israelson. Sucks. Possibly excepting the starting TE, that was pretty clearly our best player. I assume it was just random, so he may remain our starter, but a random LSOD for a team like this is pretty unkind.

By the way, QB Duran gained two more formation to 14, while Wisniewski stuck at 10. I think Duran is the starter for this year.

Not sure what is the right thing to do here. Just wait things out until cohesion and chemistry start to work in our favor? Make a real commitment toward a gameplan, and start being more selective in the style of player we bring aboard to fit the system? Not sure.

I'd keep with Duran. At a minimum, maybe we learn a bit more about why he was so angry.
Also, maybe just so we have something to do other than rinse, repeat, I think that we should commit to a gameplan and try to work toward it to the extent possible. I don't even think that it really matters what kind of gameplan--just something around which to build. And, finally, if this goes on for 20 years with no noticeable improvement, then maybe FOF has changed such that IMT success is no longer possible. If that is the case, then maybe it should evolve into a "no players before the 4th round" kind of thing. But, I think that we are a ways from that. I have confidence that the IMT guys will do just fine once they get used to playing together. |

That's a pretty good summary of my feelings as well.
My base thinking right now: -our best OL are run-first guys at G... and there really aren't any serious passers in this bunch, it seems... so I'd think that a play toward a run-first and controlled passing would make the most sense as the base offense...trouble is, without big bars at accuracy and getting downfield, I fear that the 6.3 version of the short passing offense will be pretty well emasculated (if I'm understanding correctly the people who have been working on this stuff since the latest patches) -As for defense, I have no real plan -- I have never been really crafty enough to come up with much of a base defensive gameplan other than "don't get caught with your pants down" meaning lots of median expectations and not too much blitzing... I don't have much more creative than that, to be honest (especially for a team that is not an offensive powerhouse) |

I've never had any idea how to defensive gameplan ever since Jim fixed the "blitz with one guy 100% of the time" exploit.
Maybe a running offense with a more balanced passing attack (i.e. a bit more downfield than one would otherwise have with a ball-control attack). |

I don't have the game up, but he's one of those guys with really weak bars... including the BPR, which shoudl have been good if that dash was any indication. Not sure if that means he will remain low-rated but will play over his ratings (a long time hunch) of it that suggests the 4.42 is just a mirage (and most of the rest of him is too). He'll definitely come to camp. Also, it looks like I (in manually setting depth charts, which I don't do very often playing solo) benched the WR with a X in his name, and now he is livid. I will plan to do the re-sign after camp game with him, but it's possible he walks off and signs elsewhere. My bad. |

Three guys where a picture might provoke some discussion:
WR Hamilton... with "must get" combines and dreadful bars. AT least there's room for that BPR to be maybe a 40 or so... but still, what do we expect from this guy? Creeps up to 30? Plays better than that? DE Benjamin Castillo - drafted for two big bars and an affinity. Got to start most of last year due to injury and my curiosity. State were on par for general low-rated guy. Rookie camp was -1 overall. Any reason to think this guy is going to develop to bring those top two bars (the ones I actually care about) in line with the rest, or is this guy now basically a finished product? QB Tommie Duran - I guess he's our starter. Do these bars help determine what we ought to be doing with him back there? |

Hamilton: No idea. Do we still think that the combine bars translate to other positions? Since he has no skills at WR, do we try something crazy and change him to a DB or an RB? I haven't really played with that much at all in FOF, so I have no idea if that is crazy talk or not.
Castillo: Even if those top two bars show some improvement, can we really expect them to get to where we want them to be? As for Duran, a QB without the ability to throw the ball between 11-30 yards is a . . . liability. That said, I think that we need to stick with the guy. And decentish bars at deep and 3rd down passing give us something which with to work. I might try a run heavy offense with a slant toward the deep ball, and give him receivers to try and match that. His timing and sense rush bars mean that he can take those longer drops and maybe not get sacked so much and maybe even make a play out of it. Just my 2c |

Okay, here's my more detailed thinking here: In careers with limitations (empty cupboard, etc), I have a lot of experience fiddling around with a very low-skill offensive line... or at least a line where I won't invest much draft/cap capital. And in doing so, there's a certain "pattern" player that I have become pretty fond of. His initial bars will look zero or near zero in the areas that I generally consider to be the keys to on-field performance: run blocking and pass blocking. But he will have a strong, even maxed-out bar in blocking strength. High endurance is another good sign, but I don't think it's essential for this pattern of player. I have had a lot of experience landing guys like that, giving them playing time, and watching their bars in the top two areas move from voids to... well, pretty decent. Not studs, but guys who in time might be rated 30 or 40 in run blocking and pass blocking, which isn't bad given the late-round of after-draft investment required to get them. Actually, if you had the files for this IMT Bills team, you'd see that our current starting LT Alex Beyer is a mini-=creeping version of that style of player (though I don't think he will ever get to 30 on those top bars, I bet they have moved up since he started playing). Anyway... general concept: guys with a strong bar in a fixed skill can see the lousy or zero bars in the more variable skills start to drift up in time. So... that's my theory with DE Castillo. I confess that I don't have a lot of past with guys like this at DE, as I am rarely patient enough to play them for long. But I halfway expected to see (and still do) some development of those zero/zero bars in Run D and PR Tech into the 5-1- range and then beyond. Would he eventually get to 40 in each? Don't know. Would he maybe play better than the zeroes would suggest? Don't know. But I have a theory, at least, that this guy was worth a season or three as a starter to find out. |

Just typing up thoughts on random guys...
QB Patrick Cobb - The combines are within solid ranges and I tend to like guys who have bars that flow in a bit of a reverse J shape. (Yes, I'm serious.) QB Jorge McElroy - Good combines, biggish long passing bar, percent developed does not match his 5/34 rating. QB Corey Davison - Gotta give the no combine guy a look with that Sol and Pos. WR Raymond Staat - Gotta get him. Paired GD and End bars, good big p, combines that fit for a solid starter in all places, 17 pct dev is way off 15/35 rating. WR Ralph Bennett and WR Vince Bernard - I dunno, give a look, cut immediately if you don't get a +3 or more in camp. WR Tracy Rund - Worth a camp. No combine, possible paired bar and decent looking big play. LT Everett Price - Love a guy like this. Solid combines, pct dev mismatch, big block strength bar and funny reverse J to other bars. I'll keep looking, but those are some guys I'd be interested in following as a start. |

For shits and giggles, have you considered playing a lot of Cs out of position in the other slots on your offensive line? You can usually get some better guys that way, and, maybe this has changed, but I did some testing that didn't see much of a negative to depth charting in all centers instead of sticking with lesser OL guys in proper spots. *shurg*

C Kenny Delgado - Might be a quality body who gets somewhere with playing time.
WILB Daniel Canady - A few decent combines, could be a solid guy. WILB Chester Hanson - Good strgt and punish, big pos. MLB Alex Blair - Solid pos and good bars. SLB Donovan Kirk - Seems to have some interesting things happening. S Ross Wheelock - A few things to like with the combines and pct dev. S Rick Brayshaw - Decent combines. S O.J. Biletnikoff - Shurg. Generally speaking, I think it's tough to find good corners like this. Might have to just convert safeties and stuff. Anyway, that's it for now. Would be a little interested in watching these guys through a camp. |

I put Hamilton's current BPR at between 35-39. I don't think there's any real give in that rating... he's never going to be a 65 or even a 50 guy at BPR without a random breakout.

With Penxa willing to come back, I see our WR depth chart for this year looking something like:
FL Spencer, Owens SE Penxa, Staat We will keep Lee as the inactive affinity gimp, so we probably want to carry one or maybe two more guys on our roster of 53. Neither Bennett nor Bernard looks like much right now, but the +2 camp says keep them... and even Rund gave a +1. 2nd year man Hansen has 34/52 GD and 68 BPR, but I'm considering chucking him for the younger set... by the bars right now, that looks like a crazy move. |

...and I don't see any way that Jamie Hamilton makes the team, with a zero camp and an 8/18 rating. Two very good combines notwithstanding, the guy doesn't seem to be able to play.

Interesting stuff with Hamilton. That's basically going to make me throw my own drafting theories out the window.

We gave Hamilton every chance to prove us something with those combines. It's on him.

Well... as far as I'm concerned, the goals of this career are split somewhere between winning and learning. If we had no talent at WR, I'd probaly be thinking "let's give this Hamilton kid a chance to play, maybe as the FL2 or something, and we'll see if he posts numbers better than his lousy bars suggest." But given the fact that we now have maybe six legitimate guys easily ahead of him at the position, it would be pretty dumb to do so, I think.
