Chicago Loses Gilbert Stiles

CHICAGO, IL. May 5, 1915 - Chicago fans will be disappointed to learn that Gilbert Stiles suffered a sprained ankle while colliding with a player at a base in yesterday's game. After the doctor informed the Chicago Orphans manager that Stiles was expected to miss 5 weeks, the manager told the press that the rest of the team would have to step up their play until the shortstop could return. "You can't make excuses in baseball, because there's always a game tomorrow," said the team's skipper.

This season Stiles is swinging the bat at a .353 pace. He's scored 24 times, while driving in 21. His on-base percentage is .451 and he has played in 30 games.

Big Day with Bat: Klotz 5-5

BOSTON, MA. June 2, 1915 - Brian Klotz of the Americans was unstoppable in today's 8-0 victory over the Detroit Wolverines at American Grounds. He battered them for 5 hits in 5 at-bats.

"Boy, I was on the mark today," said the shortstop after the game. "I could see the ball real well. It's a great feeling to do this. And besides, 5-5 won't hurt your batting average like 0-5 will."

Brian Klotz singled in the 1st, doubled in the 3rd, singled in the 4th, singled in the 6th and hit an RBI triple in the 8th.

This season Klotz has hit at a .262 clip with 30 RBIs, 3 home runs and 22 runs scored.

CF Mueller Taken with First Pick

NEW YORK, NY. June 16, 1915 - The 1915 Amateur Draft took place at the Hotel Imperial in Manhattan yesterday, and 20-year-old Texas native Ruben Mueller, a speedy center-fielder, was taken 1st overall by the Baltimore Terrapins.

He was drafted in the 1914 draft by the St. Paul Saints with the 2nd overall pick by the St. Paul Saints, but failed to sign with them.

Because of that, the Saints have the 2nd and 3rd pick in this draft. They selected 22-year-olds SP Bob Everly and RF Can Wilbanks to round out the top three picks.

Neither organization would comment on the report, saying it was club policy not to speak about a trade until it was finalized.

This season Stuck has been credited with 4 saves in 25 relief appearances. In 120 innings he has a 11-3 won-lost mark, 1.27 ERA and 74 strikeouts

**

The general manager of the Boston Americans has signed off on a trade for Kansas City's 32-year-old catcher Jonathan Ross, 21-year-old minor league third baseman Henry Ringler, 21-year-old minor league center fielder Adam Gibson and 23-year-old minor league starting pitcher Ken Vaughn. Presently Weiler is batting .258 with 4 home runs and 52 RBIs. He has played in 101 games and scored 40 times.

Looking at his present stats, Edwards has compiled a .330 batting average in 88 games with a .425 on-base percentage, while hitting 1 home run and driving in 37 runs and is known as one of the best players in the league.

The New York second baseman and left-fielder said to reporters in the postgame interview, "It makes it easier if you get a good pitch. The odds are in your favor then, not the pitcher's. I got a bunch of very pretty pitches to hit today and I didn't miss any of them."

Nelson Crop hit an RBI single in the 1st, tripled in the 3rd, hit a two-run single in the 4th, hit an RBI single in the 5th, walked in the 7th and hit a two-run single in the 7th.

Nationals Edwards Down with Injury

WASHINGTON, DC. August 8, 1915 - Baseball can be a contact sport at times. It can exact a harsh toll on a player's body. In a recent game against the Detroit Wolverines, Nationals outfielder Fred Edwards was injured running the bases and is expected to miss 3-4 weeks with a sprained ankle. The team did not announce any roster moves today related to this injury. The Washington skipper told the times that personnel decisions would be announced as early as tomorrow.

For the season, Edwards is hitting at a .332 clip with 2 home runs, 41 RBIs and has scored 59 runs. He has 118 hits, 57 walks and a .427 on-base percentage. Just traded to Washington a little more than a week ago, he is 8-for-22 with the Nationals so far.

Orphans Gilbert Stiles Hurt

CHICAGO, IL. August 16, 1915 - "I'm frustrated right now," said Chicago second baseman Gilbert Stiles. "I can't help this team by sitting on the bench or in the training room." Unfortunately for the Orphans, that's where he will be spending 3-4 weeks. Stiles suffered shoulder tendinitis in today's game against Cleveland while colliding with a player at a base. "Believe me," he said, "I won't be out a day longer than I have to be."

So far this year in 91 games Stiles is hitting .303 with no home runs, 45 RBIs and 72 runs scored.

Buffalo Headed to Series!

BUFFALO, NY. September 6, 1915 - We didn't think we'd see a team clinch this early, but Buffalo has done it. With a 5-0 win over the Kansas City Packers yesterday afternoon, the Blues put themselves 18 games ahead of Newark and Pittsburgh, ensuring their Federal League victory and a place in the Presidents Cup Series.

This is Buffalo's second time on top of the Federal League. In the league's inaugural season in 1912, the Blues finished with 98 wins, but lost to the Chicago Orphans five games to two.

Washington Leaps Into 1st Place

WASHINGTON, DC. September 13, 1915 - Things are getting wild in the United League. The defending pennant champion Orphans have been defending their title well, but the Nationals came into town and stole first place away.

With a three-game sweep, the Nationals are in first place. But nothing is set in stone. The Nationals have played 142 games, and the Orphans have played 147 games, If the Nationals can continue their 8-game win streak, they'll have no problem clinching the pennant.

The two big-name additions to the Nationals have been nothing but extraordinary. Ed Gale, the 24-year-old Boston native, is 7-1 with a 2.08 ERA with the club. Fred Edwards, another young star, is hitting .354 in his 16 games with the club.

Moore 5-5 Against Philadelphia

CLEVELAND, OH. September 21, 1915 - "It was like I was hitting amateur pitching," said Earl B. Moore after his 5-hit performance against the Keystones. "No offense meant to Philadelphia, but it was like I was back in the park again. I could see the ball that well. But this wasn't a kid league park, it was Murphy Park."

The Cleveland first baseman had a fantastic day at the plate, knocking out 5 hits in 5 at-bats and pacing his club to a 10-4 victory.

His manager elaborated after the game to the press, saying, "Earl worked the entire offseason on trying to shorten his swing and stay inside the ball and the hard work is paying off in base hits."

"That's what I'm trying to do," Moore said. "Be quick to the ball and let it travel a little farther so I get a better look at it."

Moore singled in the 1st, singled in the 3rd, singled in the 4th, singled in the 5th and singled in the 7th.

Moore is presently batting .299 with 3 home runs, 49 runs scored and 41 RBIs. His OBP is .352.
