Arverni - An EU: Rome Dynasty - COMPLETE!!!

Hello all and welcome to my newest dynasty! I just d/l’ed EU: Rome last week, and I have some time on my hands, so I loaded it up, did the tutorials, and now I am ready to play. I have never played this game before, at all. Perhaps I will hate it! Perhaps I will adore it! Perhaps I will get bored of this dynasty quickly, or perhaps I will challenge Rome herself to supremacy.

I have decided to play Arverni. This one province Celtic - Gaul nation is interesting from several vantage points. It has iron, so I can build heavy warriors. It is near the south of the Gaul provinces of those currently en-nationed, which gives me some wiggle room to the south. I am beside three other one provinces, and one of those has horses, a major trade good that allows the use of horse archers and cavalry. The other two are grain, which is great, since we begin in starvation. I’ll need to end that quickly.

My early goal is to unite Gaul. My long term goal is to see what opportunities exist to expand into Germania, Iberia, or Italia, and take it. My super long term goal is to challenge and defeat Rome.

For this map, I included a section at the bottom with my province info pulled up. Now, EU: Rome uses some things similar to other games in the EU series, and some things are different. For example, my population is divided into citizens, freemen, and slaves. You can see each for Arverni’s province on the right side of the province display, at the top where it has 3/6/2. You can also see if any barbarians are in there, and what mercenaries are available for hire.

I am adjacent to:

Lemovices - grain, isolated
Aedui - Horses, in the middle of things
Sequani - grain, next to Helvetii

The other nearby Gaul one province nations are:

Carnutes - North of Aedui, grain
Parisii - North of Carnutes, horses
Aulerci - Grain, west of Parisii
Nervii - Game, northeast of Parisii
Atrebates - Fish, north of Parisii and on the English Channel

Also:

Eburones - A one province Germanic Wood province (wood allows Archers) east of Nervii
Masilla - A two province Greek culture nation, with unconnected provinces, on the shores south of me. Ally and tribute giver of Rome, rocking two wine provinces.

We begin with super good relations with everybody Celtic, and no casus belli.

Our Civilization level is at 40 and we need 50 to be able to colonize nearby province.s

I believe the best strategy is to strike out of the gate against Aedui. Going to two provinces in a world of one provinces should prove a valuable beginning to my game. Additionally, removing enemies of one of the military goods of the area, while also giving it to me seems like a good idea.

I need food now. I make a trade route offer to Lemovices, my iron for their food. This will give us both iron and food, and help to develop Arverni province.

I look around, and order 1000 javelin mercenaries to my province. This costs very little. I hope that the archers will help to give me the strength to take Aedui. Since I know my badboy is about to go south like a duck in winter, I make a decision:

The Pursuit of Wealth - We lose a stability. We gain +20% to trade income and -20% to recruit speed.

I also appoint a general for my 1000 troops, and appoint a bodyguard from among my courtiers. I make sure my finances are in order, and check all of the screens.

I make an alliance offer to Sequani, and I proclaim a guarantee on Carnutes.

After a month, my javelineers are almost ready. My mission is to make an alliance with Aedui, but that’s not going to happen.

Feb 18 - I declare war on Aedui and my stability drops to -3. I order my 2000 troops to their province. They are building troops, and I want to take them out before they are ready.

I do not call on my ally for help.

We get a new mission. We lost a stability for losing that mission. The new one is to get a supply of horses.

Mar 20, 474 - Parisii declares war on Carnutes. I am unable to help right now, because I am already in war.

Mar 26 - We engage in Aedui

April 5 - We win and begin the siege of Aedui while their army retreats.

April 28 - Carnutes has lost a battle with Parisii and is under siege too.

Jun 25 - The Aedui army arrives back in their provinces and fights us again.

July 4 - We crush the Aedui forces.

Aug 1 - I order an assault on Aedui after we have breached their defenses.

Aug 10 - We win, and annex Aedui.

Aedui - Population 1/5/1. With horses. Trade with Sequani is canceled because we captured it. That removes horses from two people. This horse province is next to Carnutes, Arverni, Sequanni, and Lemovices, plus an unclaimed province.

A few days later, I disband our mercs, who did what they needed to do. I order champions built. I also spend 5 gold to sacrifice to the gods and raise our stability once.

I have a new mission - Get more Loyal Soldiers

Jan 4, 475 - Parisii rejects our offer of trade access

Jan 29 - I have 2000 troops in Aedui, but my rebel risk wants me to not attack Parisii despite a temporary CB and them not having taken Carnutes yet. I would love to DOW them, stop the siege, and keep them at a one province level.

Feb 11 - I decide to change my mind and DOW Parisii. Let’s play this very aggressive. Our Stability drops 2 because of great relations, and I wish I hadn’t spent that money to raise my stab earlier, and waited until after this war. I think it will prove worth it, however.

Mar 10 - Carnutes falls just before we arrive there.

Mar 18 - Battle Begins. I decide to call on my ally since Carnutes was just annexed.

Mar 20 - Sequani refuses, and we gain a one year CB against them.

April 2 - We win!

May 24 We win again

June 9 - Lemovices rejects an alliance offer

Aug 9 - Another victory in Carnutes

Oct 10 - Carnutes has fallen!

Oct 14 - Parisii rejects a peace offer for Carnutes and some tribute monthly

Oct 22 - They offer peace for Carnutes and some gold immediately, no tribute, and I accept.

Carnutes - I put a 5/6/5 governor in charge. 3/3/0 population, civilization of just 36%. I order a trade route between Carnutes and Aedui. This is not a good province, but it gives us an internal source of grain, a land route to Parisii that does not go through barbarian territory, etc.

I just found out that you cannot DOW at -3 stability, so my increasing the stab was actually a good thing. Do I want to DOW Sequani while I have a CB against them? I increase our stability. It doesn’t really matter what my end goal is, I want it.

I proclaim guarantees against Nervii and Aulerci. That way, Parisii will be attacked for aggression.

War exhaustion is setting in, so it’s peace for now. I spend the last of my blood money as a sacrifice for another stab increase.

Nov 15 - Our High priest failed to invoke the Faith of Nematoma, and now our revolt risk increases instead of decreasing.

Jan 23, 476 - We are now allied with Lemovices, and had another trade access proposal to Parisii rejected.

Feb 4 - We get an event - Unexpected reinforcements. Our reinforcement speed is 4% better and our loyalty +0.04, and lasts for a year.

Do I need to send my army out to slay barbarians? No clue. Let’s do it.

I don’t know when, but Rome moved into Liguria.

Mar 4 - I see Lemovices building troops, so I order 1000 cavalry built. I choose the +10% loyalty to cavalry as my national idea.

Apr 1 - Nervii dows Atrebates

July 3 - Parisii finally allows my merchants access.

Oct 6- Truce in Nervii

Nov 2 - Bononia is added to the Roman expansion.

Jan 21, 477 - I choose Adapt or Perish in the event about abandoning the old ways. Civilization in Averni increases 1, and we get several advantages in trade, but loose loyalty from my courtiers and soldiers.

Jan 20, 478 - Stab increase from another expenditure

Apr 1 - Rebels in Carnutes and I order my forces in.

May 2 - Rebels crushed

Nov 30 - Our chief’s wife passes.

Dec 28 - He remarries. Quick little bugger.

Feb 25 - 479 - Rome dows Magna Graecia

May 19 - I again take Adapt or Perish in the Crossroads event. Again I lose loyalty and popularity but I gain the needed civilization.

Oct 24 - Ager Bruttius is ceded to Rome by Magna Graecia

Jan 3, 480 - One of my clan chiefs is arguing with others that he has not gotten a title and my stability drops one I have the money to raise it back up immediately. I was saving it for the next level.

I make one of his family my naval tech investor. Heh.

Jan 23 - Another son born to the chief

Apr 4 - I rearrange my advisors and generals. Some are in weird places. I make sure one person from each clan is in a seat.

Feb 2 - 481 - Increase of stability

I get an event and choose not to raise taxes for a year, and my rules gains the Good Natured trait

July 1 - Eburones dow’s Nervii today. I get a CB against Eburones. Take it?

July 21 - I get my event again and choose Stick to the Old Ways this time, because I am moving my aries into a position to look and see if I want to go to war with the Germanics.

July 23 - A barbarian hordes erupts in a local province and is marching o Helvetii

Nov 6 - Nervii is annexed. I failed to go to war after I saw Eburones’ 9000 troops.

It looks like when barbarians take over a nation, they get the barbarian troops, because Eburones and Helvetii just got massive army bonuses.

Parisii refuses military access.

Dec 30, 483 - Another Honors our Ways because my guy got too unpopular.

Jan 5, 484 - Another sacrifice for stability

Apr 9 - Rebellion in Carnutes.

Apr 30 - Defeated

Nov 19 - We failed in our mission and lost 20 popularity. New mission - Annex Parisii.

I send a guarantee for Atrebates.

So, in the next ten years, if we can take Parisii, then we lose some badboy and gain a core on the province. Nice.

Dec 12 - War again between Rome and Magna Graecia

Jan 1 , 485 - I decide to go ahead, lose two stability for not having a CB< and DOW Parisii.

I immediately pay to raise our stab one.

Feb 8 - We drive them from their province and begin a siege

Apr 21 - We lose 16 soldiers, they lost 334 and retreat

May 10 - We breach their walls. I order an assault.

May 27 - They fall. We annex Parisii.

We gain a core, our next mission is to ally with Sequani, I create a trade route between Parisii and Aulerci.

Parisii - Horses, 3/6/2 population, because it is a core, very little revolt risk. 38.1 civilization.

Mar 12 - I get an event and my ruler gained the Lapsed trait. Omens get a -10% chance of success with him as ruler.

I appoint a new governor of Nervii. I order my forces south.

Let’s give you a look at the current landscape

Some things you’ll note - We are next to the Mediterranean now. I wanted to move down a bit and block peaceful expansion by Rome and Massilia, each of which could have moved more towards us. I wanted to take Allobroges, but too many barbarians there right now, perhaps on the next colonization attempt.

Vocontii is getting a lot of civilization very quickly because it is next to my capital, the Massilian capital and Rome, so it is jumping up very quickly and my guess is it could be the jumping off point for more colorizations soon.

In order to colonize, you need to have an adjacent province of civ 50 and an adjacent province with enough population. Then some population leaves to form the new colony, and you cannot try again until your population picks up.

July 10 - Atrebates is now trading fish for grain with Syracusae

How would you rate this game? As someone who has enjoyed the non-HOI Paradox games, and still play EU3, I never got this one. What are your impressions of it?

Not nearly as good. For example, look at the small number of provinces. That's lousy. They know better than that. When you remove the sheer amount of land, towns, and such from the game, and make it simply about a handful of provinces, it doesn;t have the same flow, the same epic feel.

I dislike games where there is a border that artificially separates you from the world. In the real world, the Seluceids had to deal with a lot of powers that aren;t on the map. I prefer a full map on, or at least CK, where you can;t play anybody near the borders.

I do like some of the elements. I like this colonization style, and I like that the trade goods all have various good things attached, and no COT. I love the lack of COTs and the same trade goods. Now, lumber allows archers in the province where it is, and where it is traded. Trade has a real value in the province, and you can get more trade routes as you build things in your provinces - that's cool.

So, I think the economic factors are better. Yay! But I'm not impressed with many of the other changes. Both CK and EU: Rome take place on just Europe, but I think CK does a much better job.

I think the CK dynasty factors are interesting, and meaningless, since most governments of the time are not dynastic. The tribes are Strong Man Wins and the republics are different. So you have the bare bones of the CK dynasty system, but none of the ability to make choices and influence your children are here. There's no education choices or events with different choices or the ability to hire mentors - you just get one saying he's now
skeptical or cruel or whatever.

So I think the game is certainly alright. It's about on the level of Eu2 in terms of quality, but I feel there are some missed chances to have made this the next great Paradox game, if that makes sense. There's no enough of an overhaul, not enough good things, etc.

The map looks ugly, btw. I've seen screenshots of hte map that look nice, but mine is this ugly blue, so I'm on the political map view all of the time.

I've also had few issues with rebels. Lucky? Or a problem with the game?

But, for the 5 buck price tag on Steam, with teh expansion too, I think it was easily worth it

Thanks. $5 is cheap, but my time is not so I think I'd be better off investing it in something else (though at the moment FM is sucking up huge amounts of my time and who knows when I might actually get to that something else). So I will, instead, content myself to read about your successes.

Mar 23 - I DOW Helvetii and order my army in

May 11 - We annihilate the Helvetii forces and begin a siege

Aug 20 - Helvetii falls:

Helvetii, trade route with Sequani, iron, 2/5/1, 25% civ

Dec 4 - I DOW Eburones, and my stab drops two and I sac to bring it back up one.

Jan 19, 507 - barbarian revolt in Vocontii

Apr 15 - We win in Vocontii and destroy the barbarians

June 12 - I sac another gift to the gods for another stab gain

July 9 - Eburones falls and we annex it

I cancel my alliance with Alurci. What I was hoping happened as my chiefs want me to conquer them next.

Eburones - core province, trade route with Narvii, West Germanic, Animism instead of Druidism but low revolt risk due to it being a core already. 0/4/3 pop, 42.6 civilization.

I've played Rome a lot and I liked it, but it simply wasn't designed with playing as one of the small, one province nations in mind (other than maybe the Greek ones). The real game in Rome is dealing with internal politics, so there really isn't much to do unless you play as one of the big boys.

Having said that, the game doesn't really match up with EU3, Vicky or CK to me. It was fun, but I feel like they rushed it out and didn't put much love into it. If they spent more time designing more depth to it, it would have been really good. Maybe the time and of Rome just wasn't suited for EU style games.

Dec 27 - At the age of 65, our chief has died. He brought great strength to Arverni and took it from a one province tribe to the nation of Gaul, and 14 provinces.

His successor is 66 and the chief of the Correid clan. He has a military of 9, charisma of 0 and finesse of 6.

He was also our best commander of the 1st army. He will remain in that position as Chief of Gaul.

We lose a stability to enact Retreat is Dishonour, which gives us a 0.50 army morale bonus but makes our retreats a bit slower.

Jan 1, 508 - We discover Noble Cavalry

Feb 8 - Vocontii become a full province after absorbing the barbarians.

June 8, 509 - Stability increase after another sacrifice

Oct 13 - Rome Dows Carthage

Jan 10, 510 - We smash another large barbarian army

My second army:

2000 javelin throwers
1000 horse archers
4000 champions
4000 cavalry

Nov 30 - Another barbarian horde smacked and defeated

Feb 22, 511 - Carthage lost 5 provinces to Egypt

Apr 1 - White peace between Rome and Carthage

July 26 - We crush a huge barbarian horde in Ruteni and we follow it

Aug 26 - Our leader died, and now we have a new one.

This is our former High Priest, 70 years old. Former head of the Divicid clan. Martial 4, Charisma 5, Finesse 9.

It’s time. I need a stability of at least one (I have it), a civilization of at least 50 in my capital (I have it) and a leader with a finesse of 8.

Our stability drops 3. We change to a Despotic Monarchy. We get national ideas - 1 each in civic, military and economic. We’ll also be getting a -33% build cost when we get to it. We also get a lot more positions in the court to fill and new laws to select.

We lose another stability and choose to enact “Citizenship for Sale” which will give us 10% more tax and speed the trip from freeman to citizen by 2 percent

I take the Citizenship national idea, and that movement increases by an additional 7 percent. I do not take an trade idea right now. One helps blockade, and the other makes my recruitment ten percent faster - neither is worth it.

I just appointed a Grand Vizier, Chancellor, Royal Treasurer, and Chief Torturer

The torturer can reduce rebellion, the Treasurer taxes and trade, the Chancellor my badboy, diplomacy and intrigue successes, plus the Vizier a ton of stuff: research, construction speed and war exhaustion.

We offer a sacrifice to the gods to increase our stability to -2

Sept 16, 512 - Rome DOWs us

The reason I did the military accesses thing was because it is usually great at breaking the ice and keeping Rome or another big bad off your back, because there is a huge stability hit for DOWing with someone you share military access with. -5. For a large country like Rome, that’s a major investment, so if they want to attack us, they need to go the slow route, or already have a lousy stability. They went from +1 to -3 stability to attack us.

I need to combine my two armies. That’s my only chance.

Nov 5 - 28 thousand Roman forces failed to assault Helvetii

Nov 26 - Voncontii is under siege by Massilia

Jan 6, 513 - I’ve been building a bunch of armies and my army is ready to attack Helvetii.

Jan 26 - When I sent my 26000 troops to Helvetii, they retreated back to their territory. I am building a smaller army to break the siege in the south.

Apr 17 - After some maneuvering, we arrive in Gallia Cisalpina and begin a siege.

May 10 - Their main force arrives and protests our presence. Battle ensues.

May 17 - We won and lost 4000 troops - them 8000

June 17 - We drove away Massilia from Vocontii

July 12 - We followed the Massilian forces to their capital and defeated them again. They are fleeing to Liguria, but I will stay and siege.

July 31 - Their beleaguered army arrives back at Gallia Cisalpina and tries to dislodge us again.

Aug 5 - We send them packing, but a brand new army of 20+ regiments of troops is moving our way from Rome.

Aug 19 - This is the day that begins the battle that may decide the war. The new army arrives in Cisalpina. If we can hold, we have an excellent chance of winning this war. If not. Then we may fall hard, as I have few other troops.

Aug 24 - We killed more than 5000 of their troops and lost 1051 of our own. They run like dogs.

Sept 22 - Massillia fell to us

Sept 23 - Masillia accepts peace for .35 gold monthly. Now I have just one flank to fight on.

Oct 1 - Religious tech increases

Oct 8 - Gallia fell. I order my troops from Massilia and Gallia to Liguria.

Nov 12 - We arrive in Liguria and battle ensues

Nov 20 - We lost 1600 and they lose 3700. We win.

Do I chase or do I besiege Liguria? I think I need to chase. I leave behind a few units to keep up a siege and I move on.

Jan 1, 514 - We discover missile troops.

Jan 18 - We arrive in Bononia and begin battle

Mar 1 - Naval and Construction tech increases

Apr 23 - After a major battle with both of their armies, we lose 6000, they lose 9000, and we win.

June 7 - Liguria falls

Rome rejects peace for Cisalpina

Sept 29 - After a long campaign with a lot of attrition we lost 10000 troops, they lost 9k, but we held.

I split off damaged troops to flee back and restock. I also keep making new troops for the grinder

Dec 30 - Battle begins

Jan 16, 515 - We lost 510, and they lost 10,000.

I pursue

I am out of manpower

Apr 12 - We win in Ertruia. We lose 2600 troops, they lost 4500.

Apr 14- Bononia falls

Aulerci - Now a core. Grain province. Trading with Parisii. 4/3/3. 43 civ.

Gallia Cisalpine - Iberian Druidism, because it is still a colony. 0/3/2, 44.1 civ, wine province. Temple + forum

Paleoveneti - Venetic Animism, 0/2/1. Amber. Temple + forum. 39.2 civ.

Liguria - 0/4/4, Roman culture, Roman religion, stockade, temple and forum, 62.2 civ, wood.

Bononia - 5/1/2, 61.5, Roman/Roman, grain,

I had to take Paleoveneti and Gallia to stop their northward expansion. I also grabbed Liguria and Bononia to add some geographically adjacent provinces.

I have barbarians heading to Paleoveneti, so I ordered my troops there from Roman territory. Another barbarian group is closing on Eburones.

My new leader -

20 years old, 6 martial, 6 charisma, 5 finesse

Well, I was able to defeat Rome. When they DOW’d me, I thought I was going to lose the war badly and then lose a ton of provinces, but what I did was use my high manpower to build about 30 units and then have a bunch of reinforcements. This was not on my time-table - I wasn’t expecting war with the big bad for a long while.

It will take years to get my stability back up, my armies refitted, my war exhaustion down, and my manpower back up - but what I proved is that I cam take Rome. Now, note that their best provinces are yet to fall in central and south italy. Normally, when I wage war against an equal, I like to hamstring it economically in the first capture of land, but I cannot get down to, or defend, south italy, and I needed to stop future peaceful expansion by Rome.

Should I even continue playing this dynasty at this point? I just had a three hour war, and I know that there will be future wars just as annoyingly long. I didn’t sign up for EU: Rome in order to spend all of my time fighting wars.

I’ve also completed all of my dynasty goals - Gaul, Monarchy, build up, and take on Rome. This dynasty started in 474. It is 517. In just 44 years, we went from a one province nation to defeating Rome and taking four of her provinces - even four colonies and ex colonies. It also means Rome is pissed and will fight us again, probably soon, because we have four of her core provinces.

Jan 1, 524 - 50 Year Review:

We are now a Despotic Monarchy and Gaul.

We have 19 provinces. Of those, all but three are Druidic, and those are Eburones, Bononia, and Liguria. All but three are Celtic: Eburones, Liguria, and Ruteni. Ruteni will become Celtic when it turns into a province from a colony.

We have three armies, with 39 regiments. Our manpower took another hit after battles with barbarians, and we need to get it up.

We have a stability of +1, 147 gold saved for another sacrifice, and a 1.6 badboy

Of our 19 provinces, 14 are cores

With have the 4th highest income, after the Seleucids, Egypt and Rome.

We have the 5th fastest research after Seleucids, Egypt, Carthage and Rome

We have the 4th most provinces, behind the Seleucids, Carthage and Egypt

Our top three provinces for taxes are: Arverni, Nervii and Lemovices

Mar 29 - Huge barbarian horde at Paleoveneti, fails to assault, but it’s going to be a serious problem with its 30000 size.

May 9 - Paleoveneti fell and we have won a major battle against the Remaining Roman forces.

June 29 - With another barbarian horde entering my territory, I have to pull out. I offer peace for just Etruria and some gold and they agree.

Some notes post War with Rome.

3rd highest money per month (Behind Egypt, Seleucids)

Rome still had a ton of manpower and just needed time to rebuild her armies, so withdrawing then was not a bad plan, with a captured province of some value.

5th in research

3rd largest empire, Carthage has one more province than us
