(Logic question) What's the code to unlock?

Here's the clues

682 - One number is right, and in it's proper place
614 - One number is right, but not in it's proper place
206 - Two digits are right, but both are not in proper place
738 - All numbers are wrong
380 - One digit is right, but not in it's p roper place.

Yes, I know, my usual answer to these questions is "They told me math wouldn't be involved today..", but one of my FB friends challenged me, and I just spent 5-10 minutes building a logic tree pattern to figure out the code.

So I thought to share it.

Was the answer really 042? I was initially just posting a Hitchhiker Guide to the Universe reference.

1. 2nd rule means 6 can't be right. (Because it would be in the right place according to rule 1).
2. Going back to rule 1, we know 8 or 2 has to be in the right place.
3. Rule 4 says 8 is completely wrong. So 2 is the 3rd digit _ _ 2
4. Rule 3, we know 6 is already wrong. That means 2 (which we already know) and 0 have to be correct, but in the wrong place. Since 0 can't be 2nd or 3rd, it has to be 1st. 0 - 2
5. Going back to rule 2, 1 or 4 has to be correct, but in the wrong place. Since the middle is the only blank left, 1 can't be right because then it would be in the correct spot. So 4 is the 2nd spot. 0 4 2

021 was my original answer, would have been correct if the first clue had read ‘not in the right place’.

My logic solving was solid, reading ability only 80%
