Opening night of Sex and the City

No, I didn't go. We went to see Indiana Jones at the local MegaPlex theatre.

The scene waiting for us was one of the funniest things I have ever seen. There were literaly packs of women roaming about, dressed to the nines, as if they were going to a cocktail party. My wife and I got a total kick out of it.

Every show was sold out also and they were checking ticket stubs at the door, ir was honestly one of the strangest things I have seen at a movie theatre.

Saw the same thing too tonight. And I've discovered that the women that watch Sex and the City are not very attractive.

The women in Sex and the City aren't attractive either, so that makes sense.

People have been warning guys about this for weeks. I don't think we realize how utterly absurd the woman-love for Sex & the City is. It makes Star Wars geeks lining up for Ep1 look ok.

One of my regular bars was lacking in talent tonight, and I'm thinking this is the reason why.

Someone on the Rutgers' Rivals.com football board posed the question, if you had to pick up one of them from the bar (Rutgers alum Kristin Davis...she's definitely attractive...removed from the equation), which of the other 3 would you take home?

Some guy said "I'd take home Carrie Bradshaw and tell all my friends to hang out at my place 'because Dee Snider from Twisted Sister was going to be there.'" I don't think I ever laughed harder at something I read on a message board. Anyway, I think that's a pretty accurate comparison.

Love Kristin Davis though.

What's scary was alot of guys looked like they were drug to this. Most of the packs of women roamed in groups of 4, but there were alot of 3 women/1 guy things.

Here is how I would rate the women of S&C:

Kristen Davis: 4 out of 10
Looks like Mischa Barton's grandmother. Not ugly, but I would require 3 or 4 beers to hit that.

Kim Cattrall: 3 out of 10 (10 out of 10 in 1982)
Very, very hot back in the day. Which was a long time ago.

SJP/Mr. Ed: 2/10
I got some laughs from it, but still wouldn't bang it. Probably makes 'neighing' sounds while getting wood.

That red head chick/man: 1/10
I don't even know what this is. Is it a drag queen/trannie?

I was dragged there last night, was spared by sold out showings, and will be dragged again tonight with with advance-purchase tickets.

I'm thinking it won't be the worst thing in the world, I'm kind of looking forward to the entertainment value of the crazies in the audience, sobbing or yelling or whatever they do.

I had no idea this would do all this business - $26 million estimated for Friday alone, more than double Indiana Jones.

My wife went with a group last night, she counted 3 Men in the line (that they waited an hour in BTW) and all them looked like they were waiting for root canals. She mentioned the audience was crazy, clapping, crying, hollering and the like.....I could only get her to admit to clapping once.

She also wore a Cocktail dress....

I could never imagine guys acting like this at say.....a Football game or something

Went with the girlfriend last night, saw a lot of attractive women actually but maybe that is because we went to the theater close to campus. The movie was ok I guess although the whole aura of the series seems shallow and pretentious to me.

We went last night, got tix to the 8:30 showing, had to wait in line to get into the actual theater though. I counted men as we got in line, saw 6, maybe 1 or 2 got in behind us.

There was one guy there with his very pregnant wife...I told my husband that conversation was "I'm THIS pregnant with your child...you are taking me to see Sex and the City..." If he was smart, he just agreed and faked a smile.

I loved the move (HUGE) fan of the show, and no, I don't think my life is like that at all, I just love the dynamic between the women and how honest they are with each other...plus they all have great shoes! Husband said it was better than he was expecting, but nothing great. He didn't fall asleep or complain at all, so I was happy, though I have been told I now have to see "Get Smart" when it comes out.

You don't know any women, then...

My wife went to a midnight showing on Thursday with a group of her friends despite the fact that she had to be up at 5am Friday to get ready for work. This despite the fact that she called me a "huge dork" a few months ago when I told her that back in high school I went to a midnight showing of one of the Batman movies.

I have watched 5 minutes of this show...and that was plenty for me. I consider myself fortunate that my wife is NOT a fan of the show either (she watches it every now and then, but not religiously) so it's looking like I won't have to go see this thing...fingers crossed.

I think women have found their version of "The Three Stooges."

We almost went Thursday night for the midnight showing, but I had to be on the phones for work at 8, and husband had to be at work at 7, so we decided against it. I wish we had though, that would have been fun

Can the sequel be far away?

Over $55 million for opening weekend, almost double the anticipated gate. Biggest R-rated comedy opening ever, 5th-largest R-rated movie opening ever.

The article also notes that the audience plunged sharply from Friday to Saturday, which is the reverse of most blockbusters, meaning that it could dry up fairly quickly.

Yeah, I think that this one got a LOT of early run to the theater dollars (with women in cocktail dresses), but won't hold up. I don't see this women running to theater to see it again and again either.

I'll probably see it at least 2 more times in the theater, my best friend Jessica wanted to see it but was doing an out of town wedding this weekend (she's a photographer), and my mom wants to see it as well.

The movie was just... long.

I followed the series from start to end... but damn... the movie felt like it wouldn't end.

It's like they took two 30-minute episodes, combined them, and added 1 hour of unnecessary scenes.

I've seen 10 minutes of this show, one episode years ago when I had HBO. I turned it on just in time to see the red-headed chick get her ass eaten out by some guy, followed by ass-eating discussion at lunch the next day between the 4 of them, with the Kristin Davis character being the only one to acknowledge having done the deed (cue: hilarity/shock that it was the prude!).

As if the visual with the red-head wasn't enough, the ass/lunch dynamic basically made me ill.

That was about it for me. That, and I assume Noth's character's name is a reference to his penis size, which is about as predictable/stereotypical as a show about chicks could ever hope to be.

This was my plan until I discovered that it isn't showing anywhere in Winnipeg. Probably because Sex in the City is taking up about 80% of the theaters.

Instead I went with a buddy to see Harold and Kumar 2 (2 thumbs up). My wife and all her friends got dressed up like the rest of the Sex and the City nerds. They brought sushi to the theater, as well as fancy cupcakes or something. Extremely ridiculous, although my wife thankfully was in agreement on that, and really just went along with it because all her friends were going.

The best part was picking up one of her friends on the way to the theater. This girl is a real piece of work. We had to stop and go into her apartment because she needed the ok on her dress (I swear some of these girls were acting like they were going to Prom). Anyways, she comes out to show off the dress and she looks 100% like the Paper Bag Princess. No joke. She then says "this doesn't look like I'm wearing a paper bag, does it?" We both shook our heads and told her she looked great, which was awesome because she then went out into public dressed in a paper bag, thinking she looked hot.

From what I've read, it isn't. It's a reference to him being a Mr. Big-shot. He's supposedly uber loaded and stuff.

FYI - that isn't at all what happens...he offers to give her a large sum of $ (30k) so she can buy her apt and she turns him down, so it's not the typical "girls looking for a rich guy" thing. They do all have careers and money of their own...with the exception of Charlotte, but that is a long story that I am sure you don't want to hear...

My wife and her sisters were laughing at me this weekend because I can't even be within earshot when my wife has Sex and the City on. It gives me a headache. I said all it is is a bunch of women nattering away incessantly about how their boyfriends suck. They questioned if nattering was actually a word...

My wife had been complaining that there was nobody to see it with (her friends don't watch the show), but then her sisters were in town for a wedding. I said if she couldn't see it in the theater, she could just wait to see it on DVD because it's not like an action picture with big special effects that are best on a big screen. They were all aghast and assured me that you had to see it in the theater. I have no idea why.

I'll come clean. My wife was a fan of the the show when it was on and I would usually watch it with her. I didn't think it was too much different from, say, Friends. I didn't think that it was that bad of a show.

I was talking about the show in general, not the movie. But I don't know anything about either of them, so I'll take your word for it.

At least there is nudity in it.

The men brave enough for 'Sex'

NEW YORK (AP) -- Shopping bags line the aisles. Heels click on the sticky floors. Gaggles of girls pose for pictures.
The "Sex" cast -- Kristin Davis, Parker, Cynthia Nixon and Kim Cattrall -- saw their film hit No. 1 at the box office.

This was the scene at one New York City theater during the opening weekend for "Sex and the City," which turned multiplexes across the country into a kind of feminine ground zero. Of course, "Sex and the City" doesn't represent all things feminine, just the cliches: clothes, gossiping about men, Vogue magazine, etc.

Whatever you think of the film or the HBO series that spawned it, the jammed cinemas were an intimidating place for any heterosexual male to venture. This reporter was (forcibly) dispatched to a Manhattan theater to determine whether the ultimate "chick flick" could be a welcoming experience for a guy. And with look of determination that said, yes, he was confident enough about himself to make such a trip, this reporter went. Talk about embedded journalism.

The crowd was not nearly as homogeneous as expected. (Enough men apparently went to help the film to a robust $55.7 million gross over the weekend.) Interviews with three couples suggested that "Sex and the City" has plenty to offer men -- or at least isn't worth avoiding like a well-dressed plague. iReport: Ladies line up for 'Sex'
Anthony Smith initially said he was "dragged" to the theater by his date, 21-year-old Pamela David. She quickly reprimanded him: "That's not true. You wanted to see it. Don't lie."

Smith, 38, then happily let down his guard and confessed he had seen almost every episode.

"I'm totally into it and I'm straight," said Smith. "You understand women better watching 'Sex and the City.' "

Turning to David, he added: "Not that I figured her out yet, though."

Jose Dalban, 25, joined his girlfriend, 19-year-old Rosemary Mejin, and was proud to acknowledge that he's a fan of the show: "I like Samantha. She's my favorite."

Like seemingly everyone in the theater before the film started, Dalban said he hoped Carrie (Sarah Jessica Parker) finally marries Mr. Big (Chris Noth). Regardless of how the fortunes for the most prominent male character on the show ended up, Dalban thinks men can identify with the show's feminine foursome.

"'Sex and the City' is like when I get together with my cousins and my friends," he said. "They're just like us, only on the woman's side. I have a friend that's just like Carrie. I have a friend that's just like Samantha."

Vivian Becker, 22, attended with her boyfriend, who insisted on anonymity for fear of embarassment. And for good reason: Becker said he, in fact, was the "facilitator" in their trip to the cinema. The boyfriend admitted that he was "invested" in the show after being made to watch the TV series by Becker.

"Sex and the City" is one of the few summer blockbusters targeting women. Most of the comic-book adaptations and R-rated comedies are aimed squarely at male teenagers. To Becker, guys having to go see "Sex and the City" helps balance the gender scales.

"What are women gaining when they go to 'Iron Man'?" she wondered. "A lot of my friends were dragged to that. There's a give-and-take in movies, right?"

Friends is even worse than Sex and the City. The latter was at least commercial free.
