All Around Sports Team Draft - Basketball Voting

Here are the basketball squads selected by the participants. Important rules to note: The participants drafted 13 players and all 13 were required to play a minimum of 5 minutes. The owners put a 5 minute designation on the players that they will not play a second over that 5 minute minimum. Other bench players should be considered as regular reserves and can play as many minutes as the situation dictates.

Vote in this thread for the top 3 squads and I will rank them 5-3-1. Everyone can vote, including the participants, but no voting for yourself.

Participants are free to make their case for whatever strategy they plan to use, and can mention how they will target specific opponents.

New Orleans Oilbirds (Owner: Karlifornia)

Head Coach: Tom Osborne

PG Allen Iverson
SG Michael Vick
SF Reggie Bush
PF Deacon Jones
C Amar'e Stoudemire

Bench: SF Tom Glavine, SG Floyd Mayweather, PG Willie Mays, PF Barry Bonds, SF Bobby Orr, SF Zlatan Ibrahimovic (5 min), PG Eusebio (5 min), SG Cristiano Ronaldo (5 min)

Wake Forest Cougars (Owner: Radii)

Head Coach: Phil Jackson

PG Charlie Ward
SG Michael Jordan
SF Jerry Rice
PF Ray Lewis
C Bill Russell

Bench: PG Manny Pacquiao, PG/SG Greg Maddux - 5 minutes only, SG Iker Casillas - 5 minutes only, SG/SF David Beckham - 5 minutes only, SF Ted Williams - 5 minutes only, PF Carl Lewis - 5 minutes only, PF Thierry Henry - 5 minutes only, C Roy Halladay - 5 minutes only

West Hollywood Stars (Owner: digamma)

Head Coach: John Heisman
PG Carl Crawford
SG Tiger Woods
SF Calvin Johnson
PF Dave Winfield
C Dwight Howard

Bench: G Joe Mauer, G Kyle Rote, G Tim Howard, F Roger Clemens, F Herschel Walker (5 minutes), F Al Oerter (5 minutes), F Lawrence Taylor (5 minutes), Alexander Karelin (5 minutes)

Strategy Note: Winfield and Johnson will also man the middle.

Los Angeles Letterman (Owner: hahnkim)

Head Coach: Red Auerbach

PG Magic Johnson
SG Bob Gibson
SF Dwyane Wade
PF Patrick Willis
C Jonathan Ogden

Bench: SG/SF/PF Kirk Gibson, SG/SF Paolo Maldini, SG/SF John Elway, SF/PF Alexander Ovechkin - 5 mins, PF/C Jim Brown, PG Roger Federer, SF/PF Gianluigi Buffon - 5 mins, PF/C Hakuho Sho - 5 mins

Strategy Note: Magic will be used to exploit matchups wherever possible. Dwyane Wade/Bob Gibson will take over ball handling duties when necessary. We will press and play man-to-man D, trying to create turnovers and fastbreaks.

Overwrought Message Board Enthusiasts (Owner: Subby)

Head Coach: Mike Ditka

PG Steve Nash
SG Randy Moss
SF JR Richard
PF CC Sabathia
C Randy Johnson

Bench: PG Tony Gwynn, PG Mia Hamm (5 minute), SG Usain Bolt, SG Wayne Rooney, SF Brett Favre, PF Bo Jackson, PF Vinnie Jones, C Bruce Lee

PF Kareem Abdul-Jabbar
C Shaquille O'Neal

Bench (All 5 minute subs): SF Peyton Manning, SF Jason Witten, SF Brock Lesnar, SG Michael Johnson, SG Muhammed Ali, SG Allison Stokke, PG Martin Dihigo, PG Oliver Kahn

Strategy Note: Our Bigs will be unbeatable. O'Neal, Abdul-Jabbar, and Owens will play the entire game.

Road Kill Cafe (Owner: Danny)

Head Coach: Paul "Bear" Bryant

PG Jackie Robinson
SG Rafer Johnson
SF Julius Peppers
PF Tim Duncan
C Wilt Chamberlain

Bench: PF Reggie White, SF/PF Albert Pujols, SF Tom Brady, SG/SF Gordie Howe, SG Walter Johnson, SG Kaka, PG Ronaldo, PG Diego Maradona

The Jacks (Owner: ColtCrazy)

Head Coach: Vince Lombardi

PG John Wooden
SG Derek Jeter
SF Anthony Munoz
PF Kevin Garnett
C Edwin Van de Sar

Bench: PG Pele, PG/SG Lou Gehrig, SG Roberto Clemente, SF Jim Thorpe, SF Franz Beckenbaurer -5 minute, PF Stone Cold, C Jeff Saturday - 5 minute

Strategy Note: Even though this may be my team's weakest sport, we have some surprising height with all the F and C being fairly tall. Wooden is a Hall of Fame player, giving coach Lombardi a great floor leader. This team would more than hold its own.

Canton Raiders (Owner: jbergey22)

Head Coach: Pat Riley

C Hakeem Olajuwon
PF Dave DeBusschere
SF Joe Montana
SG Ronald Curry
PG Deion Sanders

G Jesse Owens(5 min), SF/PF Johan Santana, PF/SF Brian Jordan, PG/SG Gaucho Ronaldinho, C/PF Antonio Gates, SF Steven Gerrard(5 min), G Wayne Gretzky, G Lionel Messi(5 min)

Strategy Note: Speed wins will be our strategy. We arent very big so we will do our best to play uptempo in basketball.

Huevos Rancheros (Owner: NorvTurnerOverdrive)

Head Coach: Rinus Michels

PG Steve Young
SG Kobe Bryant
SF Tony Gonzalez
PF Scott Burrell
C LeBron James

Bench: G Roy Jones, F Jeff Samardzija, F Greg Inglis, Babe Ruth - 5 min, Ty Cobb - 5 min, Johann Cruyff - 5 min, Zinedine Zidane - 5 min, Lev Yashin - 5 min

Strategy Note: Fast Break offense allows LeBron, Burrell to beat other big men down floor.

Ok, I know that I took some shit for this Charlie Ward pick, and you can ding me on it in the other sports, but the man was a point guard in the NBA. Look at the some of the other starting point guards: Steve Young, Deion Sanders, Jackie Robinson, Rickey Henderson, Carl Crawford.

As for the reason to vote my basketball team first, Jordan and Russell with Phil Jackson coaching. The greatest center of all time, the greatest player of all time, two guys who did nothing their entire careers but win championships. There are some intriguing basketball picks out there for sure, Magic/Wade from Karlifornia is solid, but you can't tell me Jordan/Russel don't give my team a better foundation. Wade has Shaq and Kareem, but Jordan and Ward aren't letting the ball go inside, and I've got 7 guys on my bench who have nothing better to do than beat the hell out of Shaq any time he gets near the ball. Hack a Shaq will be in full effect if need be.

Ward/Jordan/Russell plus a bunch of solid athletic guys and I really don't think the basketball competition should be even remotely close.

I have 2 top 50 players of all time on my team(Olajuwon, DeBusschere). I have a guy who played PG for the Tar Heels and a bench player that played college ball.(Gates) Joe Montana was recruited to play basketball in college as well. Im not going to pretend that I have the most talented starting lineup but I do feel my team has more depth and better players to fit basketball roles than the other teams. I could go through each of the other teams and find a player in the starting lineup that will be a weakness where as I dont think I have that.

Olajuwon-One of the top all around Centers of all time
DeBusschere-A very physical defender and a great rebounder
Montana-A perfect spot up shooter when the double team comes
Curry-Great ball handeler and decent shooter
Sanders-will probably be the best on ball defender in this. I could stick him on anyone under 6 foot 5 and hed shut him down.

1. Wake Forest Cougars-This team is impressive
2. Huevos Rancheros -This team is skilled and fast
3. Road Kill Cafe- I could have went 3 directions here but I favor the big guys in this format. I probably would have voted Williamsburg but Id be worried about how bad Stokke will be exploited in her 5 minutes

1) Wake Forest Cougars (dominant center, the best player in basketball history and a point guard who has one job to get Jordan the ball; add a coach that I can't stand but has hands full of rings)

2) Williamsburg Superstars (with O'Neill and Jabbar no other team is going inside on them, I think TO can add some outside shooting to the mix plus their coach would plant some sort of electronic spy device on the other team's bench to steal their strategy)

3) Los Angeles Letterman (it's all about the point guard, Magic will be able to create with Wade, other teams may have superstars on the court but don;t have a point guard to run the show; except the team with Nash but they don't have the supporting cast though)

Don't sell my PG, SG and SF short. Jackie robinson played guard for ucla under john wooden when it was tough for black players to make teams.

Rafer johnson played guard in college and was highly touted before deciding to go into track and field and peppers played college basketball for north carolina. Overall not sure anyone can match up with my size and like bergey, all of my starting 5 were players.

its unfortunate for Williamsburg that Stokke will be playing 5 minutes. I think that really does keep them out of the top 3. If she was cheerleading on the other hand, I could see them having a chance

1) Wake Forest Cougars - best player in history at SG, a real PG and a C who is going to have a field day against half of the other C's in the league. Plus the best coach in history. I'm willing to bet Jerry Rice is a pretty damn good basketball player in his spare time also and Ray Lewis will make people hurt inside. Not even that close.

2) Road Kill Cafe - Dominant post guys that are going to kill some other teams (Edwin Van Der Sar at C? 6'11 200lb Randy Johnson at C?) and Robinson is probably a damn good PG. IIRC Peppers was a pretty good basketball player and can fill in at the forward spots when other teams are getting really short of depth there.

3) Huevos Rancheros - no big man, but overall more basketball talent on the floor than any other team in the tournament (Tony Gonzalez was a damn good PF at Cal)

Close - LA Lettermen (Johnson and Wade will dominate and I like Ogden as a big man, but not enough overall talent), Williamsburg (dominant big men, but depth is very weak. Would have put Witten on the floor ahead of Arod)

Strangest decision of the tournament - The Jacks putting 6'5 soccer player Van Der Sar at C and 6'6 280lb football player Munoz at SF

That's part of the reason I left them off my list. Shaq and Kareem are great, but they have really week guards and I just can't see the personalities on that team working well together.

Though I'm not completely convinced Charlie Ward would be as good a ball player with so many great athletes around, Wake has the two players with the greatest championship runs. That's got to put him on top.

Not a lot of love for my team, but I knew I was taking a bit of a hit of basketball. Still think we'd win some games though because of bulk and strategy.

I'm not sure why so many people think Wake Forest is a landslide pick here. If Wake Forest is clearly the best team - Williamsburg would dominate them inside and be quick enough with the Rick and A-Roid to play with them. I guess the thought process here is that they have "technically" 3 basketball players with Charlie Ward, as opposed to 2 with Williamsburg. and I'm not forgetting about Jordan. But I can't see how Kareem and Shaq don't score 50 points each on a small Bill Russell 6'9" and a 6'1'' Ray Lewis inside.

6 more hours of voting. Not much drama for 1st (or 2nd, for that matter), but the places below that are really tight.

FYI, the overall winner will be decided by giving points for reverse order of finish in each sport, with a 2 point bonus for the champion and a 1 pt bonus for the runner up. (12,10, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1).

Huh. Interesting. I may have changed some things up as I drafted based on an individual sport scoring system for the overall title. Oh well.
