So, you're grading with a pretty severe curve here. As long as we're being "nice," we'll give Mizzou the gentleman's C in scheduling.

We'll have more than one ranked team on our non-conference. It will be three most likely if we include the tournament. The scheduling of low majors is mostly still residual scheduling from the Anderson staff. That should change after this year. And those games only come into play if you're a 19-20 win team in a major conference. Mizzou should have no issues winning 25+ on this schedule in a major conference, so it's not a big deal.

Now had you argued a similar argument about our overall schedule, then your argument at least has some merit. The bottom 75% of the SEC has some issues. With that said, the SEC has posted three National Championships in the last seven years, which is more than our previous conference has posted in the last 60 years. So it all depends on how you quantify weakness.

Unsurprisingly, the numbers support digamma. Here's Mizzou's NCSOS from Kenpom since 2003. The first number is their rank and the second number is the total number of teams in Division 1. Looks like Quin Snyder knew how to play a tough non-conference schedule.

2012 - 315/345
2011 - 269/345
2010 - 211/347
2009 - 88/344
2008 - 180/341
2007 - 268/336
2006 - 273/334
2005 - 91/330
2004 - 22/326
2003 - 17/324

Not sure how previous schedules support whether the current schedule is strong. With that said, what you have presented here clearly supports my argument concerning Anderson's scheduling. This year's schedule is the last one that Anderson made and it mirrors what he did previously.

Quin scheduled very difficult schedules and he's also a perfect example of what happens when you create a tough schedule and can't win any of those crucial games. It doesn't do any good under those circumstances.

You make 4 NCAA tournaments and advance past the 2nd round once in 6 full seasons, as opposed to making 3 NCAA tournaments and advancing past the second round once in 5 full seasons like Mike Anderson? From what I remember of those Quin Snyder Missouri teams, they seemed like hot teams that peaked in March as low seeds, as opposed to ones with gaudy records who were likely to get upset by a lower seed under Anderson.

Iowa hosts #15 Creighton in a closed scrimmage on Sunday. Since it is closed red shirts can play.
I cant wait to here what is said after this. Esp. after Creighton spanked us last season.

Oooh, FUCK.

Badgers lose Josh Gasser to a torn ACL. He was going to be a big time leader for us as he was just announced as the starting point guard over redshirt freshman George Marshall instead of starting alongside Marshall. Gasser last year was a great defender and a great shooter for us at times but he never needed to step up with Jordan Taylor around. This was going to be his coming out party and now we will wait another year most likely and who knows if he'll come back the same.

That leaves the Badgers with starting George Marshall at the point most likely and Brust at the SG(which he was already pre-Gasser injury). That means guys like Traevon Jackson and true Freshman Showalter will need to log some key minutes this year most likely... WOW.

The season just took quite a turn already.

Pretty fired up that were finally playing some games. Even more fired up that our big transfers looked ready to play. Bell, Ross, and Oriakhi all looked great. The Bell dunk in traffic was especially impressive.......

Maryville was a nice place to go to school. Small, quiet town without much to do. Warrensburg is a place that souls go to die.

And yes, I am a Bearcat alum and can't stand CMSU.

As far as schools go, I think I'd choose NMSU over CMSU as well. Nicer place, though CMSU has been improving their facilities of late. CMSU is a huge basketball school, while NMSU is all about football.

Kyle Anderson is cleared to play by the NCAA. So now two of the three UCLA freshmen with eligibility issues have been cleared, and only the most important one remaining (Shabazz).

I do love Pomeroy, and I think his outlying forecasts in the Big Ten (MSU and Wisconsin better, Mich a little wrose) are probably accurate (as typically is the case). I just hate how he always ends up with Evil Empires in the top spots -- usually Kentucky, Duke, and Ohio State, in recent memory. Kentucky/Ohio are 1/2 for him this preseason.

Looks like Mizzou may be upgrading in 2013 class. Had a local three-star PG who was in the Rivals 150 decommit, causing worry amongst the fans. Word came today that 4-star PG Stevie Clark will make his final visit to Mizzou and will make his decision relatively soon. Would love to add a fourth four-star player in addition to the three MU has already landed since August. Clark also has offers from Okla. St., UCLA, Baylor, and Florida St.

Memphis just got a commitment from Austin Nichols, a five star rated #19 by Rivals.

Even though he is from Memphis, most thought he would go elsewhere.

B12 commish says that B12-SEC Challenge series is likely for 2013-2014 season. Would be hilarious to see KU have to face Mizzou only a year after refusing to play them.

Good - I would hesitate to say he got railroaded at Xavier, but it seems like they didn't give him due process and used him as a scapegoat.

I am pretty sure they would match up KU and UK but you are right that it would be funny to see that matchup. I wouldn't mind a K-State or ISU game, those were some fun games from the Big 8/12 years.

It's usually done by order of finish under most circumstances to provide even matchups. So we'd just have to finish the same as them, though there will likely be some B12 teams that play more than once since the SEC has 4 more teams.

With the Big-10 / ACC challenge, they just drop the lower-finishing teams in the larger conference.

Keep in mind, this is coming from a Kansas alumnus.

Also, this isn't football where one loss could cost your team the season (unless you're in the SEC). A loss to a quality opponent isn't going to hurt us and a win could help.

Yeah, but there's an awfully good chance that 'one guy' will be leaving for the NBA after this year, so he wouldn't be around for next year. Mizzou will likely be pretty young at guard in 2013-2014.

Which is crazy.

In a nutshell for those that don't click or want to read it...

Mark Adams, who runs A-Hope, a non-profit org that supports athletes from foreign countries, was classified a IU booster. Between 1986-92, Adams sent IU a total of 185 bucks, for bumper stickers his wife wanted.

Adams, legal guardian to both players, is deemed to have provided impermissible benefits to both players.

It's a complete joke.

Coastal Carolina starts its season at home tonight in brand spanking new HTC Arena against what should be a very tough Akron team. Finally they have a legitimate basketball arena for a school of their size and conference affiliation and beyond. CCU returns just two starters from last season, but both should be very good. Two starters are new to the team this season, one a freshman, the other a junior college transfer, both foreign. The buzz on the freshman has been high though so we shall see.

It's probably going to take some time for the team to develop a rhythm and the opening schedule-against Akron and at Mississippi and Tennessee Tech will likely be a tough go for them. If they can avoid the injuries and the stupidity that got players suspended and kicked off the team the past couple seasons, it will be interesting to see how far they can go.

Good luck to the schools you follow this season.

The craziest part about those suspensions is the fines they gave these kids. $1500 a piece for someone buying bumper stickers before they were even born? Wow. Indiana has always been a class program and this gives them a bad name for no reason at all. WTF is wrong with the NCAA?

Isn't this what the NCAA was afraid of with the Michael Oher case though? Boosters adopting kids to get them to go to the school? They said they'd be watching these incidents closely.

They sure are watching it. I know Boise St. got dinged because an a couple of exchange student-athletes from the Netherlands came to the U.S. a few weeks before they enrolled and got "benefits" from their host family (like meals).

There's obviously potential for abuse there but as usual, the NCAA's rules and enforcement of them just never seem to line up with common sense. They crack down immediately on the fringe-level players and ignore Miami for years, and to tie in basketball and this thread, never, ever punish John Calipari, but instead the coaches that have to clean up his messes.

“The NCAA has finally determined that a violation of the NCAA amateurism rules has occurred involving UCLA freshman guard Shabazz Muhammad and his family. As a result, he is ineligible for competition at this time. We are extremely disappointed that the NCAA has made this determination.”

“The University and our compliance staff have fully cooperated with the NCAA throughout this entire period, and we believe the decision is incorrect and unjust to Shabazz. UCLA will expeditiously pursue its options to challenge this determination. When a final resolution has been reached by the NCAA, we will swiftly communicate the news to the entire Bruin family.”

UCLA student-athlete Shabazz Muhammad is not eligible to compete in tonight’s game due to violations of NCAA amateurism rules. In addition to other pending issues, Muhammad accepted travel and lodging during three unofficial visits to two NCAA member schools.

The university and the NCAA enforcement staff agreed on the set of facts in the case, which led to the determination that a violation occurred. NCAA member schools have established standards to determine when an individual may provide financial assistance to student-athletes. These criteria, which were not met in this case, are in place to identify when benefits are provided based on a student-athlete’s athletic ability.

The NCAA is committed to providing thorough, yet timely decisions regarding student-athlete eligibility. The expediency of these decisions can hinge on the level of timely cooperation of all involved parties.

In the case of Muhammad, the NCAA staff requested specific documents on July 31 to assist in the evaluation of Muhammad’s eligibility. However, the NCAA enforcement staff did not receive the majority of the requested documents for review until September 25, followed by more information on October 10, and additional critical information on November 1.

After reviewing thousands of pages of information, the NCAA interviewed Muhammad’s parents last week. The staff and the university then submitted the agreed-upon facts the afternoon of November 9. The NCAA then rendered a decision within a matter of hours. As demonstrated by the facts, we are committed to resolving the remaining matters as quickly as possible.

MSU struggling to start the season. They have a total of one senior on the team so I'm guessing leadership might be an issue this year.

And the Chants christen their new arena with a nice OT win over Akron 74-70. Surprised they won-Akron won 22 games last season and had most of its starters returning.
