So how many new players can we expect based on the last three games or so?

Germany just played the perfect game for 60 minutes (with amazing goals and just utter dominance) and then fucking blew a 4-0 lead at home to draw Sweden 4:4 Absolutely bizarre ...

Portugal down 0-1 to N. Ireland at the half.

Doubt it will end that way, but still humorous nonetheless.

Guys - Trying to learn more about soccer and have a really novice question. While the World Cup qualifiers are being played, is there a break in the "regular" Leagues like EPL or Serie A? Or do the games continue with the star players taking a leave of absence for the World Cup games?

Depends entirely on the leagues and matches involved.

In the lower leagues of most countries normal fixtures will continue, in the upper reaches often they'll stop or have scheduled 'breaks' to avoid qualifiers .... HOWEVER for some international competitions on other continents to the leagues you might not have breaks scheduled and just lose players (Premiership managers sometimes comment about losing African players in this manner).

As with all of soccer - there is rarely a simple answer

They have international breaks. Where all top European leagues stop play for a week for the two international friendlies/qualifiers, et al.

Like Marc said, English managers whine and moan every two years when they lose their African players for the African Cup of Nations tournament held in January.

Just buy Football Manager. With the new version coming soon apparently it's easier than ever for noobs to get into it...and we're all a big help.

I plan on it. That's why I'm starting to pay attention. The article on Messi in SI helped re-spark my interest...

We'll be here to help.

PS - if you pre-order on Steam you'll get to play (probably) on this Friday when they early-release on there...instead of on 11/3 when it's slated for release.

Wasn't that a great article?

The world cup chances for Turkey, Serbia and Ukraine do not look good after today's results. At least they're still in better shape than Canada...

Yup, I knew next to nothing about how all this worked (still don't to an extent), but FM helps pick up on things a ton.

I do wish there was a big chart though that shows all the cups/tournaments though.

I didn't even notice their 2 in 4 games form. Comes to show how little I expected of them in that group. No offense meant...

lol Canada

They needed a draw in Honduras to make it into the Hex. But they lost 8-1 and finished one point behind Honduras and Panama.

USA lineup tonight (7:15 ET kickoff on ESPN2): Howard; Cherundolo, Cameron, Bocanegra (capt.), Parkhurst; Zusi, Williams, Bradley, Johnson; Dempsey, Gomez

Guatemala: a bunch of divers and dirty players

USA only needs a draw and can advance with a loss if Jamaica cannot make up three goals on goal differential. But hopefully USA can get the win, actually play well for once in the qualifiers, and knock Guatemala out.

We did a huge wall chart back in the CM days to show all the competitions, etc. ... but there were only 16 or so nations modelled in the game back in those days, I think it'd be impossible today especially with DVD size cases.

Yeah, Wikipedia has been a huge help. I come across things like the Johnstones Paint Trophy and have no idea what it is until I look it up. I'm blown away by how deep the game is that it covers all that stuff.

Looking at the replay, evidently the defender at the bottom of the screen wasn't aware they were playing the offside trap.

That last goal probably should have been Bradley's, but Dempsey made sure it went in.

Just seen some of the footage of the scenes in Serbia after the England U21 game this afternoon, absolutely disgraceful. If UEFA and FIFA is remotely serious about Kick it Out and has any balls, the senior team should be out of the World Cup. If your fans can go another 2 years without a single similar incident at club or international friendly level, we'll let you back in and you can qualify for the Euros.
