Not the definitive answer by any means, but not even mentioned at the time or the half time analysis here.

Nor here. Eh - maybe it was a camera angle or the distance of the camera...who knows.

Or maybe it was my blue-tinted glasses.

Brilliant goal for England but Italy is picking apart their defense. Joe Hart also nearly cost England a goal by staying off his line for no reason. Jagielka saved his bacon

YES!!!!

Like I said - Candreva and Darmien were going to make England pay at some point.

That was about as easy as they come.

What?!?!

The challenge on Gerrard wasn't "marginal." It was textbook shoulder-to-shoulder, and Gerrard initiated it.

STFU Ian Darke.

Great opportunity for England.

Sides trading quality chances now. Balotelli was just a step late on that Candreva cross a couple minutes ago.

Italy gotta be careful - they're already giving up to England in the pace game, they can't get exposed on the counter here.

Why is ABC's scorebox so much bigger/clearer than ESPN's? I can barely see the score, let alone the time.

Amusingly, as I noted earlier - Costa Rica are atop the group.

That's awesome - go Costa Rica baby!

Oh, and DT, you'd like this - Italy won the World Cup in 2018 in my FM game.

If anyone deserved to win the game it was the Italians, we pressed, but I think they were relatively in control most of the time: they were happy to keep shape and ask us to try and get through them. And we weren't quite good enough to do so.

But relatively encouraging, i always thought getting out the group would be difficult with this team, but we have a decent chance based on the two games today.

I'm encouraged by the start as well. England definitely looks like a team with a good future and they can still get out of this group though I think it's a bit more daunting now.

I missed most of the second half. Did the Manaus heat seem to be a factor?

A little bit. The Italians sat back and kept their shape for most of the second half, which conserved their energy. We attacked a bit more and got tired and cramped as a result. But I think it was the quality and the second Italian goal that were the primary factors, then the heat probably played a part in how they reacted to taking the lead again.

I've liked Bony's game since I bought him in FIFA a couple years back (maybe 2) in a career mode game. Glad to see him getting a start.

Maybe it's too wet...

Japan tactically are one of the better teams I've seen - physically they aren't quite there but I'm very impressed with their attacking play and their movement so far

Why does IVORY COAST play in bright orange? You think they'd be in all white.

Lame.

You might want to get the color settings on your TV checked

Heh - nice edit. And yes, this is a very interesting matchup of polar opposites. Really thought Ivory Coast had a shot to go far this time but not if they keep playing like individuals like this

Yeah. I definitely picked them to make it out of the group in both of my FOFC brackets, but they haven't gotten any better tactically/playing like a team as you said.

While Bony might be a better player at this stage of his career, I also can't believe Japan isn't the one team you don't want to give Drogba a full 90 mins against.

I have to imagine we'll see him for the second half. If Ivory Coast can't beat Japan they have a very tricky path out of the group at this point, and I think at minimum they need a draw.

Just speculating - I think the (relative) under-performance of the African teams relative to individual talent & expectations is due to the lower level of international matches they play as a team, and also that they play against high-level opposition that requires them to have tactical discipline.

Individually the players have tactical skill given that they play on high-level club teams, but they don't have a developed & refined tactic for international play.

What a poor decision - trying to force it inside into a bracketed guy instead of going outside to the open guy.

Use your heads guys!
