Computer Prices

Hey, I'm thinking of buying a computer for my girl, just because I'm tired of her bitching about her laptop. I'm wondering on a few prices here:

2.4 ghz celeron
256 mb ram
40 gb hd
4x dvd+r/rw, cd-rw
win xp home
built in lan

or
2.4 ghz p4
256 mb ram
40 gb hd
48x cdrw/dvd (not writeable dvd)
win xp
built in lan
(no floppy drive though)

$320 for each one

I'd probably upgrade the moemory with a cheap memory deal, but otherwise, she's not going to play Halo on it, mainly type papers and play tetris. Is this a good price, or should I hold out and try for a similar machine for $200. And would it be wrong if I ripped the dvd writer out of her computer, since she is agiainst copying movies/music anyway... she could just have my dvd player.

If its not a good price, I'll hold out.

Well, I'm not a fan of Celerons (mainly due to Cache size), but the cheapest DVD Burner you can get now is just over $100. That is 1/3 of the system right there. Win XP Home will run you about $93. So just by those two, it looks pretty good. My suggestion is look on newegg.com and check out some prices of individual parts and complete systems to give you a good idea. Newegg has pretty much the best overall prices out there.

well, I had a P4 2.0 w/ dvd, lan, 256 mb ram, 30 gb hd, and xp home for $100 shipped, but I was in a rush and accidently deleted it. Oh well... to keep trying.

Sorry if this sounds a bit awkward, but I just wanted to clarify: $100 shipped? The whole system, or just shipping?

Yea....the P4 chip alone costs over $100. If you can get that kind of deal, I'm never building my own system again.

Total $100. Its a Dell Refurbished thing, but I don't think she'd complain, since her current computer barely works more than an hour at a time.

Right now I'm debating a 2.4 celeron, 128 mb ram, 80 gb hd, cdrw, lan and disk drive (she needs). for $210.

No monitors though, but they're cheap

Holy cow! That...doesn't sound too bad. I could strip the parts and...eh. I'm lazy. That's pretty outstanding. I'll applaud to this!

I wish I knew where you found these kind of prices. Lowest price I saw on Dell's refurbished site was $450.

The only issue I see (considering I don't know much) is your getting a good processing speed (2.4ghz or so) but with only 128 mb RAM, you won't be getting that speed out of it. You could try getting a stick of 512 preferably or at least 256 fairly cheap somewhere.
