Following the Paths to Greatness: A BBCF/FOF(?) dynasty

This may be done with the aid of FOF. I have yet to decide, actually.

This dynasy will take a look at five prospects for each class, starting with 1950. Since BBCF does their recruiting after the regular season, I will do a brief recap of the 1950 season, and get right into it.

These prospects could be the top five of the class, or random numbers. I will try and figure out some interesting scenarios to follow each year.

I will be showing all of the bowls, but only naming the ones that get to the BCS (unless one of our players plays in it). I'd love to find a site that has the old bowl names...and I imagine I'd have to make a few up. So that's what I'll probably do until we get to present times.

Bear with me.

Top Five Recruits, 1950-51

Four of the top five recruits this year are JuCo players. So, following their careers will be short, unfortunately. So I'm going to take the top two JuCo players, a RB and QB. Then I'm taking the top overall prep player (WR), the top player in the east (CB), and the top prep QB. I am doing this because two of the top prep recruits are corners, and I want a little variance.

1. Orpheus Hutson, RB (#1 Overall)
Los Angeles, CA - Cypress Community College
5'8, 187 pounds
Junior, 22 years old
5.0 Stars

The numbers: 4.26 40, 40.3 Vertical, 415 squat, 296 bench, 2.5 GPA
1950 Stats: 1,851 yards, 13 TD; 15 catches, 336 yards

He's small, but the kid's a dart. Runs an unbelievable 4.26 in the 40. He can take punishment and will keep playing. He can block well, and is tough coming out of the backfield on routes. Could be able to step right in and go for the Heisman right away.
Top choices: Arizona, Oregon State, UCLA, USC

2. William Erlandson, QB (#2 Overall)
Savage, MT - Bakersfield CC
6'3, 191 pounds
Junior, 22 years old
5.0 Stars

The numbers: 4.55 40, 26.4 vert, 491 squad, 220 bench, 3.0 GPA
1950 Stats: 59.5% Comp, 3711 yards passing, 33 TD, 14 INT, 397 rushing yards

Erlandson is more of a scrambler, as his 4.55 40 time indicates. But he can throw, and he can buy time with his legs. He has a lot of swagger to his game, and can take control of the field rather quickly. He's made some highlight reel plays in his time in Bakersfield, and he has certainly wowed the Pac 10 teams with his play. Not so surprisingly, the major players are Pac 10 challengers. LSU and Michigan have a chance to lure him east...but it's highly doubtful.
Top Choices: Arizona, Cal, Oregon, UCLA, USC

3. Marcellus McLenna, WR (#5 overall)
Hoover, AL - Spain Park
6'4, 179 pounds
Freshman, 17 years old
5.0 Stars

The numbers: 4.38 40, 39.5 vert, 515 squat, 302 bench, 2.2 GPA
1950 Stats: 57 catches, 1,114 yards, 12 TD, 341 rushing yards

Marcellus is all limbs, can outjump almost any cornerback, and can run by most of them. He's a prototype athlete, a kid who has great hands and great makeup. I really think whoever gets this kid is getting the best recruit in the nation. A 6'4 recruit who runs a sub 4.4 40 and has the strength to pull down tough catches is a gamebreaker in my book. It looks like he'll stay in the south, though schools like Notre Dame, Ohio State, and USC will try to woo him away.
Top choices: Auburn, Georgia, LSU, Miami

4. Morgan Reich, CB (#7 Overall, #2 CB)
Verona, NJ - Verona
6'2, 195 pounds
Freshman, 17 years old
5.0 Stars

The Numbers: 4.40 40, 36.6 vert, 516 squat, 326 bench, 2.8 GPA
1950 Stats: 78 tackles, 6 sacks, 4 INT, 4 D TD, 4 return TD

Reich is the top prospect in the east. He has size, speed, and is fearless. Boston College, Maryland, Penn State and Pitt have already given him offers, and it's expected that Texas will also present him with a scholarship. His speed and coverage ability make him the top shutdown corner prospect in this class, slightly ahead of Erik Downs of Colorado. The two are almost similar; Downs is ranked #1, but this is really #1a and #1b. Many feel that Reich has more potential, due to what he already possesses. "The kid has a level of instinct that you can't teach," said one scout. "He's going to be a special one."
Top Choices: Boston College, Maryland, Penn State, Texas

#5 Rafael Forsey, QB (#17 Overall; Top Prep QB)
Tyler, TX - John Tyler HS
6'2, 184 pounds
FR, 19 years old
5.0 Stars

The numbers: 5.11 40, 31 vert, 374 squat, 230 bench, 3.8 GPA
1950 Stats: 56%, 3545, 33 TD, 10 INT, 142 yards rushing

Forsey is not very mobile, which will hurt. But his passing, and his ability to make decisions quickly, is what makes him the top HS quarterback in this class. He unloads the ball faster than any passer available, and can take a beating. Yes, he will be sacked. He simply does not run that fast, and he is not a scramble threat. He can buy a little time. But he will never be a dual threat. He just has a unique way of approaching the game. "He seems to know where the perfect pass needs to go, and he delivers it faster than anyone I've seen," says a Big XII scout. In most years, he may not be the top prospect. But he has shined in camps, and has been named this year's top prep gunslinger.
Top Choices: Kansas State, Nebraska, Texas, Texas A&M

After a week, Hutson has offers from Arizona, Arizona State, Oregon, Oregon State, UCLA, and USC. I think it'll end up coming down to USC and UCLA, with UCLA winning out.

Erlandson could be joining him. UCLA and USC have offered, along with Arizona, Cal, Oregon, and Washington State. The Cougars are a dark horse in all of this, and could very well land the QB.

McLenna has offers from his top four. Auburn, Georgia, LSU and Miami are all interested in the gamebreaking wideout. Right now, that race is wide open.

Morgan Reich is being recruited by Boston College, Maryland, Penn State, and Pitt, who have all offered him a scholarship. This is another wide open race, though Maryland does not factor quite into things the way BC, PSU and Pitt do.

Forsey, surprisingly, has only received an offer from Missouri. It is believed that he will take his time, and perhaps that is why teams like Nebraska, Texas A&M and Kansas State are waiting to see what he is leaning towards, before committing a scholarship to him.

Hutson, Erlandson, Fullwood Commit to Southern California
JuCo stars join prep CB, will suit up for Trojans in '51

Orpheus Hutson, the diminutive running back out of Cypress Community College, has chosen to be a Southern California Trojan, according to sources.

Hutson, who was heavily recruited by USC, UCLA, and several other Pacific Ten comference schools, made his decision early Monday morning. He has reportedly informed UCLA coaches of his decision, and will meet with Trojan officials on Tuesday.

Hutson, a 5'8 dart, rushed for 1,851 yards and 13 touchdowns last season.

He was joined by Bakersfield Community College quarterback William Erlandson. The nation's top QB project, Erlandson led Bakersfield with 3,711 yards passing, 33 TD, and just 14 interception in the 1950 season.

The two will compete for playing time instantly. Hutson is expected to compete with Haywood Olds, a redshirt sophomore, for the starting spot. Olds rushed 183 times for 860 yards and 7 touchdowns last season.

Erlandson will compete with Stacey Bellini, the incumbent senior. Bellini had a rough 1950 season, passing for 897 yards, three touchdowns and six interceptions in six games. Many in Trojan camp feel that the new quarterback will win the duel, and enter the 1951 season as the new starter.

Obafemi Fullwood, a 6'1 cornerback from Paraclete, will join the two in Pasadena next season. He is the nation's fourth-ranked corner, and ninth-ranked overall.

He registered 60 tackles and nine interceptions last season, along with six touchdowns.

This gives the Trojans a major step up on the competition for next season. They are now a shoe-in for nation's top class.

~~~~~
Elsewhere, McLenna is still considering offers, as is Reich.
The race for Forsey has opened up, as the three schools I discussed last week have now made formal offers. To be honest, I was a bit surprised as I listed KSU, Nebraska, and Texas A&M...and those are the three that have offered him a scholarship. It kind of makes me feel like an expert. But, I just got lucky. ; )
Other top commits for this week include #2 QB Claxton Robiskie, out of Dodge City CC, committing to Texas. CB Erik Downs, the nation's top prep defensive player, will be going to Kansas State. Others in the top ten who have commited include SS Benny Fourcade (UCLA) and JuCo RB M.C. Hollas (Miami).
