Limited-Reported Atlanta Falcons Dynasty

I'm going to try to find a balance of the added immersion of chronicling, without getting bogged down time-wise as I have at times when trying to write a dynasty. I'm years into an all-out career that started off Empty Cupboard. Basically, this career has played out like most Empty Cupboard ones, cycle-wise:

Famine: (2005-2006) horrid seasons as we're way behind in talent and cohesion
Respectability (2007-2008)
Easy Street: (2009-2011) Many were still in original contracts and therefore a team with multiple superstars was on the field
Salary Cap Struggles: (2012-2013) All those stars want to get PAID. In this particular career, I went a couple of seasons above the cap, trading away all draft picks and keeping 45-50 players around. Still winning, but capping out all over the place just to field a legal roster.
Stars 'N' Rookies: (2014-2015) I have a hard time parting with a handful of marquee players who have been around since the famine years, so in order to keep them, and with all those cap outs coming home to roost, I had to start multiple undrafted free agents the last couple of years.

I was able to get a few low-round draft picks in 2014 and 2015, but didn't really do a full draft from 2012-2015

I'm now in 2016. Here are the results up to now:

A few other guys worth noting...

RB Gabe Garner is in his 12th season, his tenth with Atlanta. He's been the backfield leader and part of an effective 1-2 punch with Frierson. He's rushed for 7,415 yards and a 4.14 ypc average in his career. Twice, due to injuries to Frierson, he's rushed for 1000+ yards and 10+ TD's in a season. He's also the backfield leader and has a strong affinity with Frierson.

FL Mario Claybrooks is an 8th-year veteran who plays WR3. Mario was an undrafted FA who stuck around the team through the lean cap years and earned playing time.

RDT Donovan Rawls is in his 6th season, drafted 1(32) in 2011. He's developed into a real stud. He recorded 81 tackles, 16 assists, 6 sacks, 2 blocks and 12 hurries last year.

LDT Leo Herndon was also a 1st round pick in 2011, going 1(5). His ratings are lower than those of Rawls, but he's put up more consistent numbers, particularly when it comes to pass rushing. HE's had a PRPCt in the 4.9-5.6 range in each of the last three seasons.

LG Troy Horton has good ratings, and was signed as a FA this year from Tennessee.

RT Allen Livanis was picked up as a FA after his second season, and has been pretty solid for us.

Everywhere else, assume we're starting someone with ratings of 45 or less, with the exception of some of the rookies draft this year getting the chance to start...

ROOKIES
As mentioned earlier, each of the past several years we've traded away most, if not all, of our draft picks. This (2016) is the first year since 2011 that we've kept a first rounder. As a result, we had a few picks stockpiled. Here's a look at this year's draftees:

FB Barry Compton—1(24)--49/77. Good all-around FB. Will start.
LDE Travis Walsh—1(5)--41/70. Should be good at run defense and pass rushing. Will start.
C Wesley Johnson—5(24)--14/58. Balanced skills. Will start.
SS Amos Fulcher—2(5)--22/56. Very fast (4.43) for a SS and has good skills. Will start.
LT T.J. Baker—2(32)--11/54. Better at run than pass blocking. Will start.
RCB Archie Stephens—3(24)--27/54. Pretty solid all-around. Nickle or dime back.
LCB Alfred Wilcox—1(32)--23/53. Good speed and agility. Nickle or dime back.
RG Grady Madera—3(9)--20/52. Strong run blocker. Maybe mediocre passing. Will start.
SLB Mel Fletcher—2(24)--27/49. Better at diagnosis/punishing than run/pass defense. Should start.
MLB Bruce Falkenberg—4(24)--19/43--Not very good skills, but could see the field some this year.
WLB Bo Shields—4(22)--20/42--Also could see the field due to no better options.
RB Casey Maxwell—6(24)--23/38--May get some playing time down the road. My two best backs are definitely old.

You can see by the mediocre-looking rookies penciled in to start that we've had some third-class citizens in the starting lineup the last few seasons.

2016 REPORT

Key Preseason Injuries
2nd-round pick SS Amos Fulcher is going to miss the entire year with a degenerative hip condition.

New Starters This Season
  1. FB Barry Compton
  2. TE David Wilhide
  3. LT Hugh Vaughn
  4. C Wesley Johnston
  5. RG Grady Madera
  6. LDE Travis Walsh
  7. SLB Mel Fletcher
  8. MLB Bruce Falkenberg
  9. WLB Bo Shields
  10. SS Mitch Duffy

8 rookies starting overall, highlighted by an all-rookie linebacking corps. Of course, we do have some veteran starts in other positions. This should be interesting.

Regular Season Recap
The season started with rookie RB Casey Maxwell taking the first game's opening kickoff back for a TD, and three Derek Kirk TD passes in the same quarter, and we never really looked back from there. We jumped out to a 9-0 start and finished 12-4. Kirk missed four games with an injury, and backup rookie Jamie Ingram played fairly decently during that stretch. Here are the details of the season...

The influx of rookies helps us return to glory! It sure helped that we only had one major injury all year long (Injuries=200.) Kirk get his fourth Super Bowl MVP. DT Rawls and CB Chandler win first-team All Pro Awards, and SE England is the league's fastest man at age 32. A great year. Here's hoping that with the obvious decline of RB Frierson I can win another title or two before it is time to rebuild.

Roster Shaping
More cap problems this year cause me to make some trades. I franchise-and-trade LCB Pillmeier, and trade 12th-year FL Humble, who was in the last year of his contract. I also trade away RB Frierson (final year), which makes me sad, but he didn't produce last year. Finally, I deal away some current-year draft picks for players. Here are the new players acquire as a result of the trades of Pillmeier, Humble, and the draft picks:

TE Kris Gordon—(62/62): 4th-year man who had 62 catches for Chicago last year, and KRBPct over 50.0. He'll start at a position where I had below average talent last year.
RCB Russell McDonald—(67/67): 5th-year man who has steadily improved since being a 4(2) pick by the Rams. He had a 20.2 PDPct last year.
K Donnie Flowers--(68/68)--He's in his 6th season, and has hit 77.7% of his FG's.
SS Preston Armijo--(58/67)--With SS Fulcher still recovering from degenerative hip condition from last year, it makes sense to get another one in, and this guy looks like a good one.

I also moved a number of picks in and out, including all of my picks from this year. These moves will allow me to keep 49 players on my roster this year, just a little more than enough to field a legal roster. I'll have 15 undrafted FA's among those. None, though, enter preseason penciled in to start.

No big changes in training camp.

Ugh, having traded away FL Humble, we suffer a big injury in preseason. FL Claybrooks, who was set to start, suffers ACL damage in the penultimate preseason game, and is listed as Out (14).

Surprisingly, at the beginning of the regular season, SS Fulcher loses no ratings points as he recovers from the hip condition.

REGULAR SEASON RECAP

KEYINJURIES: I lost RT Allen Livanis to a torn quad in Week 13. He was listed as Out (33) at the time of the injury. Ouch.

The most pleasant surprise of the regular season was the play of undrafted rookie FA running back Norman Pike. Pike wrestled the starting job from Gabe Gardner at around midseason, and never relinquished it. The numbers:

We just didn't have enough firepower in the end to overcome 13-3 Washington. What's worse, though, is that SE England tore his patellar tendon in the playoffs. That could be very bad.

The chickens have finally come home to roost. After year after year of multiple cap-outs, I'm at the end of my rope financially. I will be forced to trade QB Derek Kirk in order to free up the cap room to field a legal team. I see no other way around it.

Back in the saddle. I traded away QB Derek Kirk for 2 1sts and a 2nd, and LCB Stan Chandler for 2 2nds. I only had two draft picks left this year (2018). I grabbed RB Adam Ballard (45/60) with 1(21), and QB Duane Sims (21/51) with the 2(28) pick. Also, SE Kyle England is Out (19) with a torn patellar tendon. This team looks pretty decimated. We signed a cheap FA QB in 6th-year man Ben Steller, who is 7-8 overall with an 81.8 lifetime passer rating in 471 attempts. He started 12 games for NY in '16, and had a decent season, finishing with an 85/8 passer ratings, 19 TD's and 11 INT's, and a 61.1 completion percentage. We won't throw deep much with him at the helm:

Key Preseason Injuries

No new ones, but RT Allen Livanis, almost recovered, shows a severe ratings drop to 35/39, and he's costing me $8.59M in cap room. Ouch.

No real surprise that we struggled., but the particularly difficult thing about this season was that, given the lack of even one solid receiver for most of the year, I can't really judge whether or not Ben Steller is a viable option at QB.

No players get extensions after the regular season is over, given that the only FA options were England (too expensive), K Flowers (no paying that kind of money to K while struggling), and backup FS Lofton. All others whose contracts run out are in third year or less. My cap used next year is $104.89M, and the cap should be aroudn $150M next year, so I'll have some room to maneuver and make decisions after several seasons when I didn't.

PLAYOFF RECAP

None.

AWARDS
RB Adam Ballard--Offensive Rookie Of The Year
FB Barry Compton--1st Team All Pro
DT Donovan Rawls--2nd Team All Pro (Good to see him back to pre-injury form.)

Roster Shaping
Given that there was no WR available in free agency rated better than 53, I decide that the time is not now to invest in a big-dollar FA QB who could get hurt before I can get him any serious receiving help.. Kyle England is the 2nd-best WR available via free agency, so I re-sign him, also re-sign QB Steller. I also trade away TE Kris Gordon, who has a conflict with England, for a draft choice. Here are the new FA's I sign in the main stage:
TE Kim Hutton (67/72), 3yrs/$16.8M-- He's a 9-year veteran who usually catches 50-70 passes per year and has been an all-pro once.
C Jeremy Allen (44/48), 2ys/$4M-- Not much available at this position, but this journeyman is an upgrade who has an affinity with...
RG Jeremy Dunn (57/57), 3yrs/$9.6M--Dunn has a lifetime 40.3 BPct, but appears to be somewhat injury-prone. He steps in as o-line leader, and creates several affinities besides the one wiht Allen.
LT Brenden Brady (54/57), 2yrs/$6.0M--7th-year man who was a four-year starter and one-time All-Pro in Minnesota, but lost his starting spot (appears due to injury). He's got solid ratings across the board.
FS Jessie Prieto (48/50), 5yrs/$24M--He's been a very solid performer for KC in his four years up to now.
FL Herb Battle (46/46), 2yrs/$3.13M--Not all that good, but has an affinity with Kyle England and appears to be good enough to start for us and give an upgrade at the position from last year. Battle's a fourth year man who spent the last three as the WR3/WR4 for Carolina, it would appear from his stats. He'll probably start and move Mario Claybrooks to WR3.
K Torrin Guthrie (39/48), 2yrs/$2.5M)--Signed to a no-bonus contract. Has hit 80% of his FG's in 3 seasons prior to now.
DRAFT
1(17): LT Jessie Kerley (19/67)--Will get moved to RT and will see playing time there this year.
1(31): FL Omar Hurm (23/59)--Will be WR3 or WR4 this year in all likelihood. Pretty solid possession receiver.
2(14): C Ernest Kramer (24/63)--Has the potential to be our starter in a couple of years.
2(31): LCB Joseph McElroy (26/53)--Agile corner who could be a starter one day. Nickel or dime guy for now.
3(2): QB Dan Stevens (21/49)--QB who likes to stretch the field. Looks like he should have at least decent ratings across the board. Knows 11 formations. I may sign a mentor to help bring him along.
3(23): TE Dan Hansen (23/72)--I only have one TE under contract, and Hansen looks like a good all-around TE for the future.
Key Preseason Injuries
None.

With mediocre receivers, Steller's QB rating climbs up to near the league average. He's probably worth one more season as the starter if I can get a 65-to-75-rated receiver in the lineup.

I accidentally deleted the first part of the 2020 report. We signed a good FA SE, and drafted one, too. Season started off great, but injuries really nailed us this year. We finish 7-8-1. QB Steller was doing great early on, with a QB rating in the low 90's, but tailed off as the personnel around him deterioriated. By the last game, we had 12 players "Out." The details...

2021...

Sims took over at QB, and things improved. Lots of injuries again (seemed abnormally high the last few years), and I realized that I'd left "Play Injured Players" at 65 from the last time I was in the playoffs. Should be better going forward now. Duh. Looking forward to next season.
