Took a sure-fire Hobey Baker finalist, and a guy who was poised to score 40+ goals his senior year, and pretty much destroyed his hockey career.

2010-11 Season Preview

NHL

Karl Bernal: Bernal is penciled in to start the year still on the third line for the Avalanche playing alongside Jack Leach and Ryan Kesler. The Avs were putrid on offense last year, and in FA they lost Milan Hejduk, so goals may be even harder to come by. Still, it's a very young club so if some of these guys start geling now, it could be a great sign of things to come.


Mike Ritschel: Ritschel is still on the 3rd pairing for the Kings, this time with Greg de Vries as his partner. Ritschel, who suffered a seperated shoulder that kept him out of the second half of the season, is expected to have a better year this year as the Kings are a team who've improved what some may say was a considerable deal.


Rob Nielsen: Nielsen is slated to start the year on the Kings third line, also known as the Virg line, as all three guys on it are rookies. Nielsen is centered by 24 year old center David Desharnias and 21 year old Brent Leffler, the 12th overall pick in the 2007 draft. Starting a line of rookies could be rough but the Kings are looking for young blood to provide a spark, and these are the three who could do it.


MAJOR JUNIOR

Kevin Thomas: Thomas is back for his final year with Sarnia. New Jersey is taking it slow with him, and Thomas understands that. Thomas will be captain for his second year on Sarnia, and is the teams oldest, and most experienced player. After this season, Thomas should be on his way to the AHL.


NCAA

Owen Hunter: Owen Hunter has developed each year, and was named to the pre-season Hobey Baker watch list as a Junior. He has a knack for offense and his defense has been improving to the point that he is also on Dartmouths top PK unit. He's truly exceling as an all around player.


Dan Ertmann: Ertmann is still an offensive first kind of player. He's so crucial to the MSU-Mantako team that he double shifts on both PP units, but he sees no time on the PK. Ertmann, a Blue Jacket prospect, is likely to finish all four years at MSU-Mantako before moving along to the AHL.


Daniel Turner: Turner is definetly the WCHA's biggest physical presence, and has quietly become Wisconsins most important player, because he sets the tempo of their defensive minded game. Turner, as a Sophmore, shows mental characteristics of some of the best leaders, with his fire and brimstone mentality to the game. As Turner goes, so to do the Badgers.


Ivan Carrillo: Carrillo is a force, everyone knows this, and besides Sean Treacy, his impact was maybe the next best as far as last years Freshman class went. Carrillo has a mean streak, and is only getting meaner, but he's also managing to keep himself out of the box. He's developing into a classic NHL stay at home defensemen.


Sean Treacy: Treacy was just named hockeyfutures.com best American goalie under the age of 20. He has been labled as a potential netminder for the 2012 USA World Cup of Hockey team and the 2014 USA Olympic Hockey team. A Minnesota Wild draft pick, Treacy is expected to make his mark in the NHL within the next two years, tops.


Joe Mazeika: The Harvard defensemen who is probably the best defensemen in the NCAA, Mazeika is coming off being a top 15 pick of the Carolina Hurricanes. Mazeika is going to be a fixture on the Hurricanes point for years to come. When exactly his career begins however is still to be decided. Chances are it will be sooner rather then later.


Colton Mayes: Mayes is back at Lawerence, and is creeping up the charts as a possible US U-20 team member thanks to his tireless work ethic, his great hockey mind and his ability to make everyone around him better. Will that end up meaning anything? We won't know until it happens, but Mayes hasn't given up hope.

SUMMARY

Okay, maybe it won't be daunting. Our team is honestly loaded. We have 6 amazing D to play, three phenominal goalies, although Treacy is the #1. It is of note that Jones will be playing in Maine next season. Our forwards are absolutely sick. We're so fast up front, and have so much skill that our team could score 5 goals a game and I wouldn't be shocked.

USA vs Czech Republic

The game got testy early, and soon deteriorated into one of the most penalized WJC games in recent memory as the teams combined for over 80 PIM. So with the constant PP's, it came down to special teams, where the USA flourished en route to a 3-1 win.

Owen Hunter, Matt Mantha and Brian Watson scored power play goals for the US, while D-III player Colton Mayes, the USA's PP Specialist was very clutch notching two assists, showcasing his playmaking abilities. Mantha was named the games first star, Brian Watson named the second star and Owen Hunter was named third star.

It was a game with no real flow, but it showcased how good the USA can be if you don't play a perfect game, and taking stupid penalties as the Czech did made the game that much harder on themselves. The USA is expected to win gold, and this was a step in the right direction.

Yeah -- I DL'ed the roster editor and edited guys on teams I wanted them to play on who didn't look like they'd make it in the game (and end up getting recycled) and I went from there.

USA vs Finland

Quick starts seem to be the USA's creed in this tournament, and tonight vs the Fins was no exception. Although the Fins went up 1-0 early with a PP goal, the USA bounced right back on a goal from Colton Mayes. Minutes later Dan Ertmann scored to give the USA a 2-1 lead, and then Ray Lawernece added his own goal to make it 3-1 after 1.

The second period started with Ryan Pandolfo scoring a minute in to put the USA up 4-1. The period ended with the USA up 4-1 and not being challenged in the slightest.

The third period saw the Fins make it 4-2 but thats how the game would end as the USA coasted to victory. Although 4-2 may seem close, the game was never in doubt as the US outshot the Fins 46-22. Very much like last years Semis, just reversed.

Dan Ertmann was named first star, Ray Lawerence was named second star and Ryan Pandolfo was third star as the USA goes to 2-0 in the tournament, beating the two toughest teams they'll most likely face in group play.

USA vs Belarus

Jack Paige and Kevin Thomas score goals within 30 seconds of one another and take the wind out of Belarus sails early. Although the first period ended with the USA up only 2-0, it was painfully obvious how the game looked like it would be ending.

The second period saw Belarus score to cut the US lead in half, and play a deadlocked game until 11 seconds left in the period when Daniel Turner skated out of the penalty box and took a full ice pass from Matt Mantha to spring him on a breakaway which he buried to make the score 3-1, and thus truly ending any Belarus chance. Sean Treacy did make some big saves in the 2nd to keep it 2-1.

Eric Stevens scored to make it 4-1 off a neutral zone turnover by Belarus and that is how the game would end, with the USA winning 4-1.

Jack Paige (1g,1a) would be named first star, Kevin Thomas (1g, gwg) would be named second star and Eric Stevens the third star as the USA improves to 3-0 in group play with only Italy left to battle.

This was an obvious example of a team taking a game off. Matt Bennett scored first on the PP and it looked like an easy W, but Italy clawed back with their own PP goal to tie it up. Italy started controlling the play when Matt Bennett once again scored to make it 2-1. After one.

The USA had the momentum and expected it to carry over, but Italy kept on gritting it out, keeping the game at 2-1 through 2.

The third was more of the same, until with 6 minutes left Daniel Turner blasted a shot home from the point to make the score 3-1 and to give the USA a win. It was a win they aren't proud of but a win they'll take.

The games first star was Matt Bennett (2g), the second star was Italy goalie Daniel Botosso (39 saves) and the third star was Sean Treacy with 27 saves.

The USA improves to 4-0 and gets the bye.

USA vs Finland

Dan Ertmann started the USA on the right foot with a blast streaking in from the right wing to put the US up 1-0. The Fins tied it up however at 1-1. Then on the PP, Kevin Thomas took a beautiful pass from Owen Hunter that he blasted home for the one timer to put the USA up 2-1 going into the 2nd.

Owen Hunter would make it 3-1 5 minutes in, and the USA was rolling. Unfortunatley within four minutes the Fins would score twice to tie the game up and make things really interesting going into the third.

The third would be tight, with each team exchanging chances but not goals. But with a minute left, the USA showed why they've back to back Gold Medalist as a puck kicked out to the point of a Finnish player, and Ivan Carrillo blasted it through a screen, scorring five hole to put the USA up 4-3, and give them the win.

Ivan Carrillo (1g,1a,gwg) was named first star, Owen Hunter (1g,1a) was named second star and Dan Ertmann (1g) was third star as the USA prevails and moves on to the gold medal stage.

USA vs Russia
Gold Medal Game

The US were the home team according to their record, but they were far from it playing in the Russian capital of Moscow. The teams traded PP goals in the first as Eric Stevens scored for the USA to tie the game at 1, and keep it that way going into the 2nd.

The second period saw no goals scored as each team had their chances but both goalies played their asses off.

The third period was where the drama happened. Russia scored 8 minutes in to go up 2-1. The Russian gritted up and were playing physical D and looked to have the game in hand but then Matt Bennett took a puck out of the corner, weaved through a crowd in front and tied the game up with under a minute left, sending us into OT.

OT didn't have much time to go down in the record books, as under two minutes in, Matt Bennett once again found the back of the net on a one timer feed from Owen Hunter to give the USA a 3-2 win and their third consecutive gold medal! An incredible display indeed.

Matt Bennett (2g, gwg) was the games first star, Joe Mazeika (1a) was the second star and Owen Hunter (2a) was the third star.

2010-11 Mid-Year Review

NHL

Karl Bernal: Bernal and the Avalanche are one of the surprises of the league as they're currently sitting in at 8th in the Western Conference. Bernal has been solid with 14 goals and 13 assists. He's been bumped up to the second line, playing with 18 year old Chris Grant (2010 #3 Pick) and vet Michael Nylander. The youth movement is looking good for Colorado, as Grant and Bernal are being compared to Heatley and Kovalchuck when they broke in. Lofty expectations but they feel they can live up to them.


Mike Ritschel: The Kings are playing better, only 5 points behind Colorado for the final seed in the West, but Mike needs to show why he was the 3rd pick in the draft. Right now he only has 5 assists, and is still looking for his 1st career NHL goal. He's showing flashes of brilliance, but for now he has a lot to improve on.


Rob Nielsen: Rob has been playing very well as a rookie for the Kings, currently standing 5th amongst rookie scorers with 26 points. Still on the third line, his production is giving Andy Murray something to think about as far as where he ought to be for the second half of the season. Many people think he needs to be a second liner at least.


MAJOR JUNIOR

Kevin Thomas: Kevin was traded early on in the year to Peterborough for a younger prospect, as Sarnia continued to struggle. Now on Peterborough, a team thats third in their conference, Thomas has a chance at finally making it out of the first round out of the OHL playoffs. Thomas has 50 points through 35 games, so his impact is definetly being felt in his final Junior season.


NCAA

Owen Hunter: Coming off of a phenominal WJC, Hunter goes back to Dartmouth where he has 34 points through 24 games, definetly showing people why he is a threat to win the Hobey Baker in his Junior season. Dartmouth is a struggling team, but Hunter and Fitzgibbons give them hope in the second half.


Dan Ertmann: Ertmann has a decent Junior campaign brewing for MSU-Manatako with 12 goals in 23 games. Ertmann has to keep his consitency he gained last year if he wants to make a dent in the NHL, but he has the potential to do it. It's just on him deciding to do it.


Daniel Turner: Daniel Turner is coming off a phenominal WJC where he was named the tournaments top defensemen. His season at Wisconsin is just as good, as Wisconsin sits #3 in the National polls behind Maine and Michigan, but with everyone back now from the WJC's, Wisconsin will leap Michigan most likely into #2, and battle Maine again for the NC.


Ivan Carrillo: Carrillo is proving he might be more then a stay at home defesemen after his clutch goals at the WJC, and the fact he has 15 points through 30 games for Maine right now. Carrillo is the anchor for Maines squad on the point, but the team MVP is in the net.


Sean Treacy: Sean Treacy is the best goalie in America right now. His 14-3-3 record is evidence of that right now, as are his microscopic 1.64 gaa and .943 save %. He's been the only goalie in net for the USA WJC team the past three years, and will now pass his torch on, but his legend will live forever. Talk about impossible shoes to fill.


Joe Mazeika: Mazeika continues to show he's the best defensemen in the NCAA, and why he's captained the past two USA WJC teams. He currently has 7 goals and 21 assists, to go along with a +19. Mazeika is looking like the steal of the 2010 draft, as he continues to get better and better.


Colton Mayes: Mayes turned heads with his impressive WJC play and rumor is he has a shot of being drafted in the 2011 draft. While it may not happen, Mayes continues to battle hard and is leading all of DIII in scoring. Mayes is a great underdog story who keeps on keepin' on.

Probably 2 months. Time is an issue right now, but these guys will be retired in a few months, and then I'll carry on from there.
