Righting a Wrong: 1982 Orioles Replay
Growing up in the Baltimore suburbs, I became an Orioles fan shortly after my birth in 1969. My family had lived in Maryland since WW2, and my Dad would tell me stories about Johnny Unitas, Lenny Moore, Brooks Robinson, Boog Powell, etc. I would soon have my own heroes - guys like Bert Jones, Roger Carr, Eddie Murray, Lee May and even guys like Andres Mora. As a child, I had no idea how lucky I was being able to cheer for the Colts (who soon became quite miserable) and the Orioles (who were still in the midst of playing ball "The Oriole Way).
In 1982, at the age of 13, the O's "suffered" through an odd year. The pitching wasn't as dominating as it had been in the past and the team's record suffered. As with all Earl Weaver teams, however, the O's really turned it on when September rolled around. I still have an article from the Philadelphia Inquirer (we had moved to Pennsylvania in 1981) stating (and I paraphrase), "When September rolls around, one can be assured that Nebraska will win their first 2 games by a combined score of 126 to 6, and the Orioles will go about 25-5." The Orioles wouldn't do quite as well in September of '82 (they managed only a 22-10 record after Aug. 31st), but the end of the season pennant race was probably my most memorable. At the end of the season, the O's found themselves 3-games behind the Milwaukee Brewers with 4 games left to play. As luck would have it, they would be facing the Brewers at home the final weekend. Friday would be a make-up doubleheader (remember those?), followed by a game on Saturday and Sunday. Thus, the Orioles would have to sweep all 4 games in order to head into the ALCS against the Angels. The O's swept the doubleheader 8-3 and 7-1 (I listened to both games on WFBR 1300 - and the reception was HORRIBLE in Pennsylvania). On Saturday, the O's would win again, 11-3. Finally, the last game was broadcast on national TV - Jim Palmer vs. (hired gun) Don Sutton. Robin Yount hit two homeruns (solidifying his MVP season) and the Brewers would romp to a 10-2 victory. I was heartbroken, but only had to wait a year for a World Series championship. I've been waiting ever since - ha! So...laying the groundwork...I will be replaying the 1982 baseball season using Strat-o-matic V11. I will be playing the role of Earl Weaver, guiding this team to (hopefully) their rightful "place" - 1982 World Series Champions. Rules: Using all Strat "MAX Rules" for added realism. Managing and playing all Baltimore games, use the computer to replay the rest of the AL games as well as the NL. Using Primary lineups with rest (no "as-played lineups") Minor leaguers are eligible, so every manager will have access to everyone who played for the respective teams in 1982, no matter when they debuted. Using injuries - will this have an impact on the races? The computer will limit overusage of players (as will I)

I finished opening day - the only other game was Kansas City (Gura) at Baltimore (D. Martinez). I'll post the boxscore later. I'm using the as played schedules so the beginning of the season is VERY quirky. I'm thinking there were a lot of rain/snow outs as the O's very rarely play two days in a row but play a lot of doubleheaders (as do quite a number of other teams).

Well, it looks like boxscores (and anything formatted on these boards) will continue to be the bane of my existence. I guess I head back to just doing the newspaper stories.

Beause of rain/snow, we have off the 7th through the 9th and don't play again until a doubleheader against Boston on the 10th. Therefore, I'm going to autoplay the majority of the games, but I may watch Nolan Ryan vs. the Cardinals and the Angels against Oakland to see if Reggie can make it two HRs in two games for his new team.

April 7th - NL Games
I watched the St. Louis - Houston game to catch Nolan Ryan's first outing of the year. He struck out Lonnie Smith to begin the game, but then quickly faltered, losing his control and giving up the longball. He gave up 5 runs through the first 3 innings, but then quickly settled down, retiring his last 11 batters before being lifted for a pinch hitter in the 7th. Still, it wasn't enough as the Cardinals start the season 2-0 with a 6-3 victory.
CHICAGO AT CINCINNATI Cubs............ 0 0 0 1 0 0 0 0 0 - 1 7 1 Reds............ 0 2 0 0 0 0 0 1 - 3 5 1 Win:Berenyi(1-0) Loss:Bird(0-1) Homeruns- J.Bench(1st) Bruce Berenyi allowed John McNamara to rest his bullpen, tossing a complete game at Riverfront Stadium as the Cincinnati Reds beat the Chicago Cubs 3 to 1. Berenyi(1-0) was in control of the game from the outset. He was stingy on the mound, allowing just 7 hits and 3 walks in 9 innings. Cincinnati managed only 5 on the afternoon. Doug Bird(0-1) was the losing pitcher. He gave up 4 hits and 3 walks in 6 innings. SAN FRANCISCO AT LOS ANGELES Giants.......... 0 4 0 0 2 0 0 0 3 - 9 11 1 Dodgers......... 0 0 0 0 1 0 0 0 2 - 3 6 1 Win:Gale(1-0) Loss:Reuss(0-1) Homeruns- R.Cey(1st) Darrell Evans had 2 base hits and 2 RBI as the San Francisco Giants outscored the Los Angeles Dodgers 9 to 3. San Francisco scored 4 runs in the 2nd inning with the help of 4 hits. That early scoring was all that Rich Gale(1-0) needed. San Francisco ended up with 11 hits for the game while Los Angeles had 6. Jerry Reuss(0-1) was given the loss. He surrendered 7 hits and 5 walks in 6 and 2/3 innings. ATLANTA AT SAN DIEGO Braves.......... 0 0 0 0 0 2 0 0 0 - 2 5 0 Padres.......... 2 0 0 0 1 0 0 0 - 3 9 0 Win:Montefusco(1-0) Loss:Mahler(0-1) Saveravecky(1st) Dave Dravecky went 3 and one third strong innings at Jack Murphy Stadium where the San Diego Padres beat the Atlanta Braves 3 to 2. San Diego claimed the early lead in the first inning when they tallied 2 runs on 3 hits. The key offensive moment was provided by Terry Kennedy who excited the crowd when he doubled scoring two baserunners. San Diego out-hit Atlanta for the game, 9 hits to 5. The winning pitcher was John Montefusco(1-0) who allowed 2 runs in 5 and 2/3 innings. Montefusco got help from Dravecky who earned his 1st save. Rick Mahler(0-1) ended up with the loss. 'I always am most impressed when a pitcher finds a way to win even without his best stuff,' Dick Williams said after the game. 'Montefusco did not have command of his pitches most of the afternoon, but he proved he really knew how to pitch!' ST. St. Louis wasted no time and took the lead in the first inning with 2 runs using 3 hits. After two were out George Hendrick initiated the scoring spurt when he ripped a base-knock. Hendrick was safe at second on a stolen base. Nolan Ryan then unleashed a wild pitch. Darrell Porter stepped in and he blasted a two-run home run (his 1st of the season). April 7th - AL Games
I watched the California-Oakland game. California has an unbelieveable lineup:
Carew Downing Lynn Baylor R. Jackson DeCinces Grich Foli Boone Rick Langford pitched well, but made 3 mistakes - a solo shot for Fred Lynn and two solo homeruns for Doug DeCinces. Though the game was close (a 3-2 Angel victory), it just feels like it's a matter of time before the Angels explode. No wonder they won the AL West in '82. SEATTLE AT MINNESOTA Mariners........ 0 0 0 2 1 1 1 0 0 - 5 10 1 Twins........... 0 2 5 2 0 0 0 1 - 10 13 2 Win:Williams(1-0) Loss:Perry(0-1) Save:Felton(1st) Homeruns- R.Johnson(1st), J.Castino-2(2nd) The Minnesota Twins put 5 runs on the scoreboard in the 3rd inning and had very little trouble at Metrodome downing the Seattle Mariners. The score was 10 to 5. The home town fans were very appreciative of the fine hitting performance provided by Randy Johnson. He doubled bringing in two baserunners in the 3rd inning and popped a two-run clout over the fence (his 1st of the season) in the 4th inning. Minnesota had 13 hits for the game and Seattle had 10. Al Williams(1-0) got credit for the victory, pitching 6 innings and allowing 5 runs. Terry Felton earned his 1st save. Gaylord Perry(0-1) was hit with the loss. He was unable to control the Minnesota offense and allowed 8 hits and 2 walks in 2 and 1/3 innings. CALIFORNIA AT OAKLAND Angels.......... 0 0 0 2 0 0 1 0 0 - 3 9 0 A's............. 0 0 0 1 0 0 0 1 0 - 2 8 0 Win:Zahn(1-0) Loss:Langford(0-1) Save:Corbett(1st) Homeruns- F.Lynn(1st), D.Decinces-2(2nd) Doug Decinces rocketed 2 homeruns at Oakland Co Stadium as the California Angels beat the Oakland A's by the count of 3 to 2. In the 4th inning California scored 2 runs. Fred Lynn began the California spurt when he took matters into his own hands and smashed a bases-empty 'big-fly' (his 1st of the season). After another out, Reggie Jackson was the next batter, but he struck out. Decinces then became the sole author of the rally when he cracked a bases-empty home run. Oakland threatened in the 9th but California was able to put down the rally. The victory went to Geoff Zahn(1-0) who went 7 and 1/3 innings, allowing 2 runs. Doug Corbett gained credit for his 1st save. Rick Langford(0-1) was the loser. He was touched for 3 homeruns in his 9 innings of work. TODAY'S SCHEDULE AND PROBABLE STARTERS SEA-Moore(0-0, ----) at MIN-Castillo(0-0, ----) CAL-Witt(0-0, ----) at OAK-Norris(0-0, ----) I guess the crapy weather continues in the rest of the country (?).

IIRC, there was sizeable dump of snow on opening day in both New York and Boston, 6+ inches. The weather did not improve much and I think the Yankkes had to wait until the first Sunday to open their home season with a doubleheader.
I'm replaying 1982 currently using the freeware gem Strategic Baseball Simulator, almost into June with a 5 way razor thin race in the AL East. Incredible baseball. |

Boston at Baltimore
Ugly, ugly game. Scott McGregor gave up 4 runs in the first inning and the Red Sox never looked back as they deliver the 10-2 victory. Dennis Eckersley was awesome, pitching 7 shutout innings. Notes: Cal Ripken got his first hit of the year and is batting .125. Storm Davis gave up one hit and no runs in 4.2 innings of relief. Lenn Sakata injured his hamstring and is listed as day-to-day. Kenny Singleton went 0 for 4 and is currently hitless for the year. Mike Flanagan makes his 1982 debut in game 2. Expect a radically different lineup for game 2, as I give the majority of players a rest for the nitecap.

Hmmm...after 8 Mike Flanagan pitches, the Red Sox lead, 3-0. Dwight Evans hit his 2nd homer of the day for all the damage. Ugh.

From there, the game calms down immensely. Both Torrez and Flanagan calm down and we drive in 3 more runs for the 6 to 3 victory. Flanagan gets the win and Tippy Martinez gets his first save of the year.

I'll be curious to see if the Cubs and Indians contend and the Braves sink.

I'll be playing the rest of the Sunday games tonight. Because of the bad weather, and just the format of this dynasty it's a little difficult to see who's doing well and who isn't. After today's games, I'll post standings. So far, the Angels are 5-0.
