Mini-Camp

Hemstead, NY - The Jets concluded their mini-camp this week, all but Santana Moss were in attendance to work out and get familiar with their new coaching staff and team for the 2005 season. Some questions were answered while others were not, and of course others developed.

Offensively Pennington did some light throwing, and only took reps on running plays. Fiedler did an admirable job working with the first unit. Fabini was present, however, did not practice at all as he still battles an ailing back. Late signee, Ethan Brooks took snaps with the first unit. Newly signed tight end, Jeb Putzier looked good catching balls, but there may be some concern with his blocking ability. The Jets appear to be lacking a blocking tight end. General Manager, Michael Marra has been keeping an eye out for a blocking tight end, Cameron Cleeland is available. But has not expressed interest in coming to New York yet. Cleeland still lives on the west coast.

Reserve running back, Derrick Blaylock appears to be what the Jets were hoping for when they signed him early in free agency. He took a number of reps with the first team and looked quicker and stronger than advertised.

Brandon Moore appears to be the early favorite to be the starting right guard, however, free agent signee, Dana Norton will have the opportunity to challenge for the job.

The Jets do have some holes to fill offensively, including a starting left tackle, starting right guard and a blocking tight end.

On the other side of the ball, the team is experiencing a completely different system, and it showed. Players appeared unsure of their assignments, and by weeks end the coaches were letting them know it. The 3-4 front is a different scheme them has been played in the past. Roberton appears to have won the battle with James Reed for nose tackle. Reed who came on strong last season has drawn interest from teams around the league.

Brian Thomas looks like he will be able to handle the weak-side linebacker position. Thomas who gives the Jets some size at linebacker to help and protect Jonathan Vilma, and help free him up to take on running backs instead of offensive linemen. The secondary has a strength in Anthony Henry
and Chris Hope, both acquired this season, however, David Barrett struggled at times, and rookie strong safety, Donte Nicholson looked overmatched and lost as a rookie. Marra stated that they need to find help at strong safety either with someone available or through trade. Problem is, Marra is reluctant to give up another pick after dealing a fifth for Hope earlier this spring.

The team will come back together in late July as they prepare for the 2005 season.

Jets Looking for Safety

Hempstead, NY - The Jets made a decision they were hoping they were not going to have to. The team is shopping the young, talented defensive tackle James Reed for a strong safety. Apparently a defensive tackle with Reeds ability, age, and cap number will do that Marra said. Teams that have expressed interest include the following:

Code:

Jets and Browns Discuss Trade

Hempstead, NY - It appears that Cleveland and the Jets are close to closing a deal that will send Jets' defensive tackle, James Reed to Cleveland for rookie strong safety, Brodney Pool or second year strong safety Sean Jones. Both players were a 2nd round pick in 2005 and 2004 respectively. However, the Browns still have Brian Russell and now have the flexibility to deal one of their young talented safeties.

Negotiations are on-going, it appears the Jets have asked for a draft pick as well, and Cleveland has asked for the opportunity to sign Reed to an extension.

Jets/Browns Trade

Hempstead, NY - The Jets and Browns worked out a deal that involved sending Jets' defensive tackle, James Reed to Cleveland in return for rookie safety Brodney Pool.

The sticking point of the deal was that the Jets had to get Reed and the Browns to work out an extension for Reed. The Jets had to pay some of Reed's minimal bonus. In return to Pool the Jets also received Cleveland's third round pick in the 2006 draft. Sources have said that the Browns offered the Jets either Pool or second year safety Sean Jones. Both sides have denied those reports. If they are true, you wonder what the Jets see in Pool, a rookie, that they did not see in Jones a second year player who did see action last season.

The Jets signed rookie free agent defensive tackle Lester Shade to go along with drafted rookie, Antajj Hawthorne to provide depth at the nose tackle position. It is possible the Jets will look for a veteran to back up Robertson.

Preseason Comes to a Close

The Jets closed out their preseason, the way it started, looking desperate to stop anyone. The team finished 1-3, scoring just 33 points, and giving up a horrible, 121 points. The team will evaluate their roster and make the moves necessary to get ready for opening day next week as Cincinnati comes to town. A look back at the preseason.

Preseason

Game 1
New York Jets @ New Orleans Saints

In the Jets first action under the new regime, things did not go well. The Jets were thumped by the Saints, 41-3. The Jets were manhandled in every possible way, yards, 369-134, turnovers, 4-1, time of possession 41 minutes to 19 minutes and of course score, 41-3.

About the only bright spot for the Jets was that the game was only sixty minutes and not longer. Offensively the Jets were led by rookie running back, Cedric Houston who rushed for 52 yards on 14 carries. The quarterbacks were a combined 9 for 20, and 66 yards. Pennington stated, “That was perhaps the worst beating I have ever taken as a quarterback.” Pennington who tried to stand behind an ineffective line had to immediately dump the ball off to the short receiver and still be hit. It became clear, early, in the season that the offensive line is going to be the Jets weakness this year.

On defense the new look of the 3-4 did little to provide pressure to Aaron Brooks. Brooks, he completed 12 of 17 passes for 130 yards. Jonathan Vilma provided some stoppage at moments, finishing with 15 tackles. If that didn’t hurt enough, the team lost starting cornerback, David Barrett for 6-8 weeks with a broken clavicle, and starting strong-side linebacker, Eric Barton for 4 weeks with a broken jaw. These injuries will lead to the Jets starting rookies Daryl Blackstock and Justin Miller.

Game 2
New York Jets @ Indianapolis Colts

Last weeks game against New Orleans was one of those games where you turn around and say, it can’t get worst, right? Speak again, the Jets were hammered by the Colts 38-3 in a game that resebled the Saints game of a week ago to a tee.

Offensively the Jets managed a mere 6 first downs, 162 yards in total offense, and a quarterback that was beaten to a pulp for a second straight week., suffering a broken nose. Defensively the Jets gave up nearly 500 yards in total offense. If it wasn’t for the fact that the Jets kept the turnovers even, who knows how bad this could have gotten.

Following the game, Jets head coach, Corey Strauss addressed the media stating, that “Things cannot get much worse than this.” Strauss had a sarcasm to his tone, and you could see the discomfort in him as he answered questions that he really had no answer to. “Corey do you see things improving?” “I do not see how it can get worse, right now we cannot block, or tackle, two key components to being a successful football team.”

Strauss left the impression on the room that the team would need to work around the clock this week to evaluate the past two performances and find a way to turn this around.

Week 3
New York Giants @ New York Jets

The Jets battled their city rivals in their annual exhibition game yesterday and it was a good one. The Jets eeked out the victory 17-16 thanks large in part to Jay Feeley missing an extra point with 5:41 left in the game. The Jets front office got satisfaction in that surely, the Jets tried to sign Feeley during the off-season, only to lose out to the Giants.

Offensively there still leaves a lot to be desired. Fiedler looked the strongest he has yet, completing 11 of 16 passes for 91 yards. Pennington played, despite a broken nose and was ineffective completing 7 of 17 passes for 73 yards and one interception. Fiedler who was brought in with the chance to compete with Pennington, may have raised the eye brows of some of the coaches.

Defensively the Jets were led by Shaun Ellis who had a monster game, 11 tackles, 2 sacks, and 2 hurries. For the Jets defense to succeed they will need some more of those performances. The defense forced four, Eli Manning interceptions including one by rookie safety, Brodney Poole that was returned for a touchdown. The Jets pass defense showed improvement, allowing just 117 yards however, they did allow the Giants running game to amass 217 yards.

Strauss addressed the media by stating,” I saw improvement today in a lot of areas, however, we still have a lot of work to do, but there were areas we can say, yes we saw improvement.”

Game 4
Philadelphia Eagles @ New York Jets

The defending NFC Champion, Eagles came to New York for the final preseason game of the season. The Eagles looked sharp in their first two preseason games, victories over New England and Baltimore, however, last week Pittsburgh defeated them 34-0.

The Jets would come out on defense the first series and force a three and out, including a sack by rookie, Daryl Blackstock. That would be the night’s highlight for the Jets, as the Eagles would overmatch and defeat them, 26-10.

The Jets were outgained 421-198, against an aggressive Eagles team that took full advantage of the Jets weak run defense. Philadelphia would rush for 231 yards on the evening, led by Bryant Westbrook’s 94 yards on 19 carries.

Offensively, Curtis Martin took advantage of the carries he received, rushing for 49 yards on just 5 carries. The passing game struggled once again, including 5 dropped passes, something this lackluster offense can ill-afford.

Defensively, the Jets need to find a way to control the run during the regular season. Without so much as a average performance by this defense this season, the year will be over by mid-October. The Jets off-season was to build a defense for the future, and right now the future does not look bright.

St. Louis Releases Baron

The NFL Network is reporting that the St. Louis Rams have released their 1st round pick, and 20th overall selection, Alex Barron. The offensive tackle, who was a standout at Florida State, quickly wore out his welcome with St. Louis.

Barron reportedly told his agent, Rico Hines, that he did not want to play for the Rams. After coming to terms with a 5 year deal worth $11.5 million, Barron and his agent tried to reneg and threatened to keep Barron out of camp. Barron reported but repeatedly went to the media with his dissatisfaction at how the Rams' organization handled his contract. Barron reportedly began to take his frustration out on the players and coaches, and his play began to suffer.

The Rams were pressed for time as to whether they thought they could deal Barron, and did not want to hold the roster spot for him. So, in a surprise move, they released Barron.

Barron and his agent appeared to be stunned by the Rams decision, but were quickly on a plane to go meet with prespective teams. Rumors are the New York Jets, Detroit Lions, Houston Texans, and San Diego Chargers are highly interested.

Jets Meet With Barron

Hempstead, NY - The Jets met with offensive tackle, Alex Barron and his agent today. Reports are that Barron is seeking a one year deal this season, in order to renegotiate during the off-season for a long term deal. The Jets have informed Barron that he would be slated as the starting left tackle, something Barron wanted in St. Louis, but, the Rams have All-Pro, Orlando Pace on the left side.

Many are beginning to question Barron and his agent's agenda and feel that the player is a high risk to cause disfunction among the team. If the Jets do sign Barron, he will be a player the team will have to watch closely and see if he is worth the long term commitment following the season.

Jets Make Roster Moves for Opening Day

Hempstead, NY - The New York Jets announced a series of roster moves to cut their roster down to the mandated 53 players, for opening day.

Released are guards Steve Morley, Jonathan Goodwin, safeties Rashaad Washington, Erik Coleman, defensive end Trevor Johnson, wide receiver Korey Kimmel, outside linebacker Mark Brown and longtime offensive tackle, Jason Fabini.

The Jets had a difficult decision with tackle Jason Fabini. Fabini has been fighting back problems during the entire off-season, forcing the Jets to sign the veteran, Ethan Brooks. Brooks has done a solid job during the preseason, while Fabini was unable to suit up. The Jets made the difficult decision to stick with Brooks and keep the younger tackles, Adrian Jones and Jonathan Dunn.

Fabini spent his first seven seasons with the Jets after being selected in the 4th round of the 1998 draft by Bill Parcells. Fabini quickly earned the starting left tackle position and never relinquished it. Fabini was not the best tackle in the league, and never did receive any honors, however, he was a solid player for the Jets week in and week out. Fabini has stated that he is not ready to call it quits yet, and is hopeful to make a full recovery and play in the NFL again.

The Jets also signed some veterans to the secondary, including cornerback Deshea Townsend, and safety Bracy Walker. Townsend became a necessary signing with the injury to the Jets fifth corner, undrafted rookie, Antoine Russell. Russell who suffered a rib cage injury was placed on the injured reserve list. Walker was brought in to help mentor the Jets young safeties, in Brodney Poole, Donte Nicholson, and Chris Hope.

As far as discussion with released offensive tackle, Alex Barron. The Jets met with him and his agent and it is believed the Jets are interested, just waiting to hear Barron's plans on what he wants to do. Barron has met with a number of teams about the possibility of signing on.

Cincinnati Bengals @ New York Jets

The Jets opened up the 2005 season with the Bengals coming into town. The Jets begin the season with a new regime, with Michael Marra as the General Manager, and Corey Strauss the Head Coach. Gone are Terry Bradway and Head Coach Oscar Christianson (Herm).

The preseason made up the worst possible nightmare you could have envisioned for your team. They were outscored 133-21, yet Strauss remains optimistic that the team progressed during the preseason. Cincinnati went 3-1 during the preseason, and have an emerging superstar at quarterback in Carson Palmer.

The Jets were conservative, yet efficient on offesnse. The team totaled 270 yards, as Pennington completed 20 of 30 passes for 175 yards and 2 touchdowns. Martin and Blaylock combined for 22 carries and 87 yards. The Jets missed their playmaking receiver Santana Moss, who was out with a sprained knee.

The Jets took the lead 7-3 when Pennington found Justin McCareins in the back of the endzone, capping a 69 yard drive that had a balance of runs and passes. Cincinnati answered back late in the first half with a 96 yards drive, capped off by a Rudi Johnson 9 yard touchdown run. The Jets secondary were victims of a 50 yard pass on a 3rd and 14. At the half the score was 10-7, Cincinnati.

The Jets would come out in the second half and mount two time consuming drives that led to a Pennington to Sowell touchdown pass and a Nedney field goal, taking the lead 17-10. Cincinnati would once again get the momentum after a drive that went 87 yards on 13 plays, with a Carson Palmer touchdown pass to T.J. Houshmandzadeh early in the 4th quarter.

The teams would exchange punts back and fourth before the Bengals positioned themselves for a 32 yard field goal, with 1:10 left and a 20-17 lead. The Jets would have one final drive to win or tie the game. The drive would be consist of a holding penalty, setting up a 2nd and 20. Pennington would strike Chrebet for 19 yards leading to a 3rd and 1. Faced with the tough decision, the Jets attempted to spread the field for a pass play, however, after a nice job by the offensive line for most of the game, right tackle Marko Cavka would be victimized on consecutive plays resulting in sacks by Aaron Smith, and finishing off the Jets.

Jets Defeat Chargers

Jets Jolt the Bolts

San Diego, CA - The Jets dominated the favorite Chargers today, 27-14. The victory for the Jets was one of surprise to many who witnessed it. The Jets got an outstanding performance from running back, Curtis Martin. Martin carried the ball 23 times for 181 yards and two touchdowns. Reserve back, Derrick Blaylock contributed with 70 yards on 12 carries as the Jets running game ran up 264 yards against the Chargers' defense.

Offensive line was the question entering the regular season for the Jets, however, after two games the team has allowed just two sacks, and are averaging 186.5 yards rushing. A far cry from what was expected.

Defensively the Jets got after Drew Brees, sacking him 5 times, 5 hurries and 3 blocked passes. They also forced two interceptions, one by Henry and one by Blackstock. The Chargers finished with 268 yards in total offense.

On special teams Joe Nedney connected on his only two field goal attemts, one from 25 and one from 55. The return game did a solid job on kick and punt returns as well.

The Jets have a bye next as they prepare for Miami.

On a hot day in Arizona, the Patriots did enough to win a tough game. The Cards held Corey Dillon in check, however, Kevin Faulk had a nice game, carrying 12 times for 66 yards. Brady completed 16 of 32 for 181 yards, but the Pats did protect the football. Bad news for the Cardinals, Josh McNown will be out the next 4 weeks or so with a knee injury. Kurt Warner will have the opportunity to start once again.

Pittsburgh (1-1) – 37
Baltimore (0-2) – 12

Washington (1-1) – 17

Dallas (3-0) – 10
Washington (1-2) – 6

Washington officially kicked off the Jason Campbell era in Washington, however, Campbell did little to help the Redskins offense, as they scored just 6 points. Green Bay (1-2) – 16

This game was as expected, a passing display. Favre and Manning combined for 637 yards passing, but Manning got support on the ground, something Favre did not. Edgerrin James kicked in with 90 yards on 25 carries as the Colts win 30-16. The bad news for the Colts is they lose their best defensive player, Dwight Freeney for the next 4 weeks with a knee injury.

Houston (1-2) – 31
Kansas City (1-2) – 34

Houston took the early lead 7-0, but would never get closer to that, as Kansas City scored the next 17 points and fought off any rallies by the Texans. Trent Green threw for 340 yards on 20 of 32 passing, including Dante Hall’s 78 yard catch and run touchdown. David Carr threw for 313 yards and 4 touchdowns in the defeat.

New Orleans (3-0) – 16
St. Louis (2-1) – 10

New Orleans continues to be the pleasant surprise this season, as they defeated a good Rams team, 16-10. For the Saints it was their third overtime game of the season. Thus far this season, they have won in overtime on a John Carnery field goal a touchdown run by Antwoine Smith and now an interception return of 60 yards by Jason Craft. Despite being under pressure all day, sacked 5 times, Aaron Brooks had enough left to drive the Saints 70 yards, to set up a John Carney field goal with :10 left in regulation.

Philadelphia (3-0) – 31
Detroit (2-1) – 12

The Eagles look to be the team to beat in the NFC once again. The Eagles beat the Lions 31-12. The difference for the Eagles this season could be the emergence of running back Brian Westbook. Westbrook has been carrying the load for the Eagles averaging 25 carries and 90 yards a game. McNabb was once again efficient, completing 17 of 28 passes for 151 yards and three touchdowns. McNabb has 6 touchdowns against no interceptions this season.

Pittsburgh (2-1) – 24
Miami (1-2) – 21

Pittsburgh rebounded quickly after Miami scored on two big play in the first quarter, a 49 yard pass to Marty Booker from Gus Frerotte and a 75 yard run by Ricky Williams. San Diego (0-3) – 11
Denver (2-1) – 31

San Diego has been the early disappointment in the AFC thus far. The Broncos defeated the Chargers, 31-11 and improved to 2-1 while the Chargers fell to 0-3. Plummer completed 23 of 27 passes for 185 yards and two touchdowns. Tatum Bell and Mike Anderson combined for 29 carries for 116 yards for the Broncos. Grant Wistrom had 8 tackles and 2 sacks for the ‘Hawks defense, which held rookie quarterback, Alex Smith to 116 yards passing and two interceptions.

Tampa Bay (1-2) – 27
Oakland (3-0) - 30

A rematch of the Super Bowl from a few years ago proved to be a more entertaining game as the Raiders defeated the Bucs 30-27 on a Sebastian Janikowski field goal with no time left. Randy Moss continues to show he was worth the trade to the Raiders as he finished with 187 yards on 9 catches and a touchdown. Bucs defensive tackle, Anthony McFarland finished with 15 tackles in the losing cause.

Strass and the Jets Prepared for Phins

Hempstead, NY - Corey Strauss had his weekly press conference to talk about the up and coming game with the Jets' division rivals, the Miami Dolphins. Strauss fresh off his first NFL victory as a head coach looked more relaxed than in the past. It appears that Strauss' Jets are ready to play.

Strauss discussed some of his team's strengths through two regular season games. I have been happy with our offensive line play. This is a group who has not been together long, but have generated good communication skills between themselves and are performing at a level higher than expected. One of those surprises has been the play of left tackle, Ethan Brooks. Brooks went unsigned during the initial free agency period, however, when it became clearer to the Jets that Jason Fabini was not going to be ready to play the Jets needed to find a tackle. Brooks has stepped in and played flawlessly thus far, not allowing a sack and blocking strong for the NFL's leading rushing team.

When Strauss was asked as to why the Jets did not sign Alex Barron, his reply was, "We have a good mix right now, and yes more talent is a good thing, however, we are trying to build things the right way, and we did not feel this was right at this time." Funny how things work out, Barron must have felt that the interest was not as high on him as expected, and he resigned with the Rams for the league minimum.

Strauss discussed the overall play of the offense and contributed a lot to the play calling and game management of quarterback, Chad Pennington. Pennington has not been put in a position to have to carry the team in the first two games, and the numbers indicate that. Pennington has a rating of 103.5, throwing 3 touchdowns against no interceptions. Curtis Martin and Derrick Blaylock appear to be able to give the Jets the 1-2 punch at running back Strauss asked General Manager, Michael Marra to find.

Defensively the team is not going to hold opponents to little offensive yardage, however, they are making the big plays that defensive coordinator Grady Coppa envisioned when he was first hired. Coppa has been given the green light to be aggressive, and the Jets have done just that. They are blitzing from all over and mixing up their coverages. Now Strauss feels that the team needs the time to "gel." Afterall, the team's secondary is made up of four new players, until cornerback, David Barrett returns.

Some of Strauss' concerns has been opponents racking up yards in bulk. It appears that in both games the Jets looked to be in control, only to give up a few big plays in a row, leading to points. Strauss feels this will be corrected in time. An example he made to this was the Chargers game last week, the Jets held San Diego to 180 yards in offense through three quarters, however, the Chargers made a few big plays in the fourth quarter to make the statistics look unfavorable towards the Jets.

This week against the Dolphins Strauss said you will see a few new wrinkles, however, expect a similar style of the past two weeks, a ball control offense with an aggressive defense. The Jets feel the good about attacking Gus Frerotte who has been know to hang on to the ball when the pocket begins to collapse. Offensively the Jets will face their toughest challenge thus far. Strauss feels this will be a true measuring stick for the offensive line, going against the likes of Jason Taylor.

New York Jets @ Miami Dolphins

Miami, FL - The Jets dropped a tough one to the Dolphins, 20-17, as Miami raised its record to 2-2, and the Jets dropped to 1-2 on a hot, rainy day in Miami.

The Dolphins took the early lead, 7-0 when Ricky Williams scored from 3 yards out. The Jets answered back with a Joe Nedney 41 yard field goal, making the score 7-3. The Jets would recover a Miami fumble on the ensuing drive, and two plays later the Jets had a 10-7 lead when Chad Pennington found Justin McCareins from 9 yards out. Miami would add an Olindo Mare, 44 yard field goal to tie the game at the half.

The second half saw the Jets put together a nice 80 yard drive, topped off by Chad Pennington's 5 yard touchdown strike to Justin McCareins. The Pennington to McCareins touchdown pass marked the 4th one this season between the duo. For the Jets however, this would mark the end of their scoring. Miami would get an early fourth quarter field goal from Olindo Mare to pull within 17-13. After exchanging punts, the Jets would put together a drive that would stall at Miami's 15 yard line, where Joe Nedney would miss what turned out to be a crucial 32 yard field goal. Miami would make the Jets pay quickly, as Gus Frerotte would strike Randy McMichael with a quick pass, McMichael would break a tackle and run through the secondary on his way to a 74 yard touchdown and a 20-17 lead. Later in the fourth quarter the Jets gained possession with 2:16 left at their own 8 yard line, the team would drive into Miami's territory before a Curtis Martin fumble ended the game. For the Jets a valent effort, but none the less, a lost.

The Jets gained 352 yards in total offense to the Dolphins 360. The Jets defense did a nice job against the Dolphins running game, however, they struggled against the pass. The Jets look forward to the return of cornerback, David Barrett against the Bills next week. The linebacking corp took a shot, as Eric Barton was lost once again, this time to a broken clavicle. He will be out for 6 weeks, the Jets will thrust rookie linebacker, Darryl Blackstock back into the starting lineup.

Week 4 Results

Week 4 Results

Atlanta (1-3) – 24
Carolina (2-1) – 12
Atlanta and Michael Vick had a game they desperately needed in this young season. Vick completed 22 of 31 passes for 213 yards and one touchdown. Warrick Dunn rushed for 122 yards on 31 carries. The Falcons controlled the game from start to finish. Cornerback Kevin Mathis had three pics for the Falcons.

Cincinnati (2-2) – 7
Pittsburgh (3-1) – 34
The battle for first place in the AFC North turned out to be one sided, as the hometown Steelers compiled 477 yards in total offense, en route to a 34 to 7 victory. Ben Roethlisberger threw for 308 yards, 133 of them to Hines Ward. Duce Staley rushed for 129 yards on 24 carries. The Steelers defense held the NFL’s leading rusher, coming into week 4, Rudi Johnson, to just 58 yards.

Denver (3-1) – 21
Tampa Bay (1-3) – 10
Denver went into Tampa Bay, and handled the struggling Bucs, 21-10. Tatum Bell rushed for 110 yards on the afternoon. In the Bucs first game, since the release of Brian Griese, Chris Simms completed 13 of 24 passes for 219 yards, one touchdown and one interception. The Bucs released Brian Griese earlier in the week after another poor performance. Griese had thrown 8 interceptions in the first three games of the season, and let his frustration get the best of him, in last week’s lost to Oakland. Apparently the Bucs are not going to tolerate players questioning coaches decisions to the media, the result is a pink slip.

Indianapolis (2-2) – 17
Jacksonville (4-0) – 31

This game was met with much anticipation, could the Jaguars be that good? Well they answered in sound fashion, defeating the Colts 31-17. The Jags compiled nearly 500 yards in total offense, and held the high powered Colts to just 200 yards. Leftwich was sensational, completing 23 of 31 passes for 362 yards and four touchdowns. The Jags D sacked Peyton Manning four times. Jacksonville travels to the defeated Chargers next week, while the Colts get the undefeated Raiders.

Kansas City (1-3) – 35
Baltimore (1-3) – 43

The Ravens and their anemic offense hosted the Kansas City Chiefs, both of these teams are trying to get their season on track before it is too late. Kyle Boller was solid for the Ravens, completing 18 of 26, 281 yards and two touchdowns.

New England (3-0) – 34
Buffalo (0-3) – 7

The season for the Bills was met with anticipation, however, the Bills suffered a lopsided defeat to the defending Champs, 34-7. The combined record of the Bills opponents this season is a staggering 11-0. The Patriots controlled the ball, compiling 398 yards in offense, and holding on to the ball for nearly thirty-six minutes. JP Losman threw three interceptions, and Willis McGahee rushed for just 17 yards on 13 carries.

New Orleans (3-1) – 10
Arizona (2-2) – 19

The Saints came into Arizona after three overtime victories to face the Cardinals with Kurt Warner getting his second start. The story of the game would be the running of rookie, JJ Arrington. Arrington would rush for 128 yards on 25 carries, to help the Cardinals control the game clock. Kicker, Neil Rackers connected on 4 of 5 field goals as the Cards moved to 2-2 and the Saints dropped their first.

New York Giants (1-3) – 24
Green Bay (2-2) – 34

Green Bay returned a Giants’ fumble 65 yards for a touchdown, and Terrence Murphy returned a kickoff 91 yards as the Packers defeated the Giants 34-24. The Giants offense moved the ball well, however, Eli Manning was intercepted twice, as the Giants made a plentiful of mistakes. Aaron Kampman had 6 tackles and 2.5 sacks for the Packers in their win.

Oakland (4-0) – 33
Houston (1-3) – 20

The Raiders continue to win, as they needed 20 fourth quarter points to defeat the Texans 33-20. The Raiders used a balance of Lamont Jordan (25-92) and Kerry Collins (21-35-200-3TD’s) to win their fourth straight. The highlight for the Texans was a 92 yard pass and catch of David Carr to Andre Johnson.

Philadelphia (4-0) – 17
Chicago (0-4) – 13

Philadelphia escaped Chicago with a 17-13 victory. The Bears played tough, but just did not have enough in their fourth defeat of the season. McNabb was limited in the rain, completing 19 of 28 passes for 188 yards and a touchdown, against two interceptions. Terrell Owens had 97 yards on 8 catches.

St. Louis (3-1) – 28
San Francisco (1-3) – 9

The Forty-Niners and Alex Smith continue to struggle offensively, this week managing just 141 yards in total offense. Smith is averaging under 5 y ards per attempt this season. Bulger completed 23 of 40 passes for 239 yards and 3 touchdowns, however, he was intercepted 3 times, all by safety Toney Parrish. Leonard Little of the Rams had 5.5 sacks for the game, raising his season total to 10.5 sacks in just 4 games, he is on pace for 42 sacks this season. Can you imagine?

Drew Brees threw 4 interceptions in the defeat and Tomlinson was held to just 30 yards on 9 carries. Tomlinson has just 208 yards in 4 games, he is on pace for 832 yards, which would be a career low.

Washington (1-3) – 13
Cleveland (3-1) – 16

Cleveland continues to play solid football, as new coach, Mickey Archibald presses the his philosophy upon the Browns. Cleveland’s defense is among the league leaders in passing, and rush defense. Cleveland led the ball game, 10-6 with 2:02 to play when Washington got the ball, and rookie quarterback, Jason Campbell drove them down the field, and scored from 3 yards out on a pass to Chris Cooley, and tieing the game. The Browns would not be denied their third victory of the season, as Dilfer drove the team 38 yards in the final 1:00 to set up a 39 yard field goal by Phil Dawson for the win. Dilfer threw for 287 yards in the victory.

Hempstead, NY- The Jets got a much needed win yesterday, at home, to improve their record to 2-2. They defeated the Buffalo Bills, 23-17. The story for the Jets continues to be their running game. Yesterday the Jets rushed for 202 yards, led by the ageless, Curtis Martin. Martin carried the ball 22 times, for 134 yards. Chad Pennington continues to be effective, completing 17 of 31 passes for 159 yards and a touchdown.

Early on the Jets have shown that they will stick to their approach of running the ball mixed in with short passes. The combination of Martin and Blaylock has been effective as well. Head Coach Corey Struass stressed early on in the preseason that his formula to success was to control the clock and field position, to help set up the easy points. Knowing that this team lacks the pure firepower, Strauss has employed the timely approach. Pennington stated, "Whatever it takes to win, is fine by me. I am not concerned with my numbers, only the W's."

The Jets get what should be another easy game next week at home, when the 49ers come into town, with rookie quarterback, Alex Smith.

Jets Prepare for Niners

Hempstead, NY - Two days after the Jets evened their record up to 2-2 with a win over the Bills, the team was back to work preparing for the 1-4 Forty-Niners, who won their opener, but have struggled since, dropping their last four. The Niners have relied upon their defense to carry them, however, a defense can only do so much when the offense does so little. Rookie quarterback, Alex Smith is playing just like that, a rookie. The team is trying to be patient with the young quarterback, however, at this time the team had hoped he had shown some promise. Thus far Smith appears to be overwhelmed out there, throwing six interceptions against no touchdowns in give games. The Jets defense, which will have all its planned starters together for the first time this season are licking their chops. Strauss stressed to the the team to stay focused during the week, and emphasized to his players that they have not done enough to intimidate this team.

Offensively the Jets have run the ball extremely well, which is surprising considering the makeup of the offensive line, and the lack of a downfield passing game. The offense has taken very few chances down the field, and therefore has allowed their opponents to cheat up to play the run. The Jets have done enough of the quick passes to open the middle up, for Martin and Blaylock to run through. Curtis Martin has show a lot of quickness early on, something that has come as a bit of a surprise to Head Coach, Corey Strauss. "Watching film of Curis last season, I saw a smart football player who go into the hole and went forward. This season, I see a player who is doing the same, however, he is making a move or two to get himself sprung into the open. The reason Blaylock was brought in here, was to give the offense that type of runner. Right now, Curtis is giving us that as well. So, instead of pounding Curtis, and wearing him out. Blaylock spells relief and allows the offense to run the same offense with him in there. Thus far, it has worked out great for us."

The Jets need this game this week against the Forty-Niners, because next week they face the defending Super Bowl Champion Patriots.

Jets Take Care of Business

Jets Report – Week 6
Hempstead, NY – The Jets started out slow, however, they got going later and rolled to a 27-10 victory over the San Francisco 49ers.

San Francisco scored the first 10 points of the game on a Rian Lindell 24 yard field goal, and rookie quarterback, Alex Smith’s 4 yard scramble. It looked as though the 49ers would take a 10-0 lead into the locker room at the half, however, The Jets got good field position with under a minute left and took advantage of it, the big play a 33 yard pass from Pennington to McCareins to set up the Joe Nedney field goal.

The second half would belong to the Jets running game and defensive end Shaun Ellis. Ellis beat up on rookie guard, David Bass and offensive tackle Jonas Jennings, getting 3 sacks, 5 hurries, 2 blocked passes and returned a fumble 26 yards for a touchdown to seal the game. The defensive unit appeared to be in full sync, stopping the run and forcing key turnover throughout the half. Unfortunately it came at a cost. The Jets suffered injuries to cornerback David Barrett, linebacker Victor Hobson and defensive end Marcus Spears. Barrett and Hobson are expected to be out for the next few weeks including this weeks game against the first place Patriots.

Offensively the Jets offense took care of business, when the defense recovered one of some of the six fumbles they caused, Pennington and company marched it down for points. Curtis Martin scored two touchdowns on the day, one rushing and one receiving. Martin finished with 87 yards rushing on 19 carries, and caught two more for 41 yards. Pennington was efficient once again, completing 16 of 26 for 184 yards and a touchdown. On the negative side the Jets have lost starting left guard, Pete Kendall for the season with a torn tricep muscle, the Jets are unsure who will get the start next week against New England.

Said Corey Strauss at his Monday afternoon press conference, “The defense made some big plays out there today, I thought offensively we were flat in the first half, but came on strong later in the game. Shaun Ellis was a one man show out there, the amount of big plays he made yesterday could be looked at as a season for some. The line did an OK job offensively, however, the injury to Pete Kendall is more serious than expected. At this time we are exploring options to help out our offensive line, we have contacted representatives of offensive linemen, Marcus Spears and Todd Steussie. We hope to have someone in there by Wednesday’s practice. We did also get knicked up a little on defense, we are going to be with out Eric Barton and David Barrett. Marcus Spears is banged up a little but I am told he will be able to go. Looking forward to this week we have our biggest challenge, we are playing a team that has won the last two Super Bowls and are off to a strong start once again. Going to New England will not be the be all for the season. Win or lose, there is a lot of football, so I am not interested in getting into what does this game mean? If there are no questions, I thank you.”

Jets Prepare for New England

Jets Prepared for the Challenge

Hempstead, NY - The Jets are preparing for their biggest challenge of the season this week, the undefeated New England Patriots. The Jets travel to New England, fresh off their second straight victory of the season. However, to add to the team's challenge they face the Pats without two of their starting linebackers, Victor Hobson and Eric Barton, a starting cornerback, David Barrett and their starting left guard, Pete Kendall.

The loss of Kendall is a tough one for the Jets, Kendall was having a fine season, and with the lack of veterans and depth along the offensive line, the Jets are expected to go out and fine a veteran by the end of today. The Jets are going to need a solid effort by the offensive line to hold back New England's front seven that has played the run extremely well.

Although New England is 5-0 this season, four of the five games have been close ones, decided by a touchdown or less. Expect the Jets to play the Patriots tight, and if a play or two goes the Jets way, they may pull off the upset.

Jets Sign Compton

Hempstead, NY - The Jets signed Kendall's replacement for the 2006 season. The Jets signed 35 year old guard, Mike Compton, an unrestricted free agent. Compton spent the 2004 season with Jacksonville, appearing in 13 games. Compton has not started a game in the NFL since 2003, ironically with the Patriots.
