BBCF - Troy Trojans

"Wow honey, you're going to coach high school football?", my wife asked.

"Um, no sweetie, not the Troy Trojans here in Missouri, the Troy Trojans division 1-A football team in Troy, Alabama.", I said with a grin.

She gave me that, "have fun" and "are you serious" look all at the same time. I told her my goal was to coach at the University of Missouri, but since they have no interest in an "unproven" head coach, Troy Alabama was my choice on a small list of vacancies.

The phone rang and it was the AD from Troy University. We talked for about thirty minutes and after I hung up the phone I turned to my wife and said, "Well, I'm the new Troy Trojan football head coach!" I kissed my wife and started packing my bags.

...and so begins the Troy Trojan dynasty.

I'll be waiting on the next patch before I begin this dynasty with full intentions of landing the Missouri job at some point in time. Only time will tell. Hey, they did beat Missouri last year.

Troy, Ala: Press Conference

AD: On behalf of the University of Troy, we would like to announce new Head football coach, Todd Volmert. We wanted to go a different direction with our program and after interviewing several canidates, we felt Todd fit the mold of what we wanted within our football program. Todd has yet to meet the team or get acquainted with the athletic department, so please keep any questions brief pertaining to the job only. Thanks.

Coach V: Thanks Mr. Dennis. Well, I'm quite excited to be here today on behalf of Troy football. I was born and rasied in Missouri and after a four year stint in the Marine Corps, I came back to what I loved - football. This is my first year at D-1 and I hope I can continue to improve what is already a great tradition here at the University of Troy. I will go in depth with this team once I get a chance to see the roster and talk with the kids and my staff. Again, I appreciate the opportunity given to me Mr. Dennis and the rest of the U of Troy Athletic Department and Board of Directors.

Moderator: Questions for Coach V? Please, no team related questions.. thanks.

Josh Cooper: Coach V, can you tell us a little bit about your plans for the Trojans?

Coach V: Sure. Without really seeing what this roster is like for next season, I've always been a Pro Set kind of coach with a 4-3 defense. Obviously, our roster will dictate what we go with for the inagural season, but my (and my staffs) plans are for Pro Set offense and a 4-3 defense. I like QB's with good passing skills and defensive players who swarm to the ball.

Ray Melink: Coach V, since we really can't start talking specific team stuff yet, have you met your staff or do you plan on bringing your own crew in to help coach this team? I know you're more of a "sit back and observe" coach. (smiles)

Coach V: Well, Ray... obvious it's too late to start firing any staff right now, heck I just got off the plane less than 24 hours ago. (chuckles) I do plan on bringing in my long time friend and defensive guru, Blade. He has been with me for years and was the first phone call I made when I heard the news of my hiring. He will concentrate on the defensive side of the ball while I handle the offense and recruiting duties. I can't say enough good things about Blade and what he brings to this team, I think you'll agree once we get going.

Moderator: Sorry to cut the Q & A so short, but Coach V has to catch a bus to the campus and start getting settled in. We will have another press conference sometime before the season starts and of course after each game. Thanks for coming today and I think I speak on behalf of all Troy Trojan fans when I say we look foward to a successful tenure under Head Coach Todd Volmert. Thanks again to the U of Troy AD Scott Dennis and Coach V.

End of Conference

Staff delegation: All no except for gameplan, offseason training, and academics.

Expectations: Try to win a few games and not completely embarass us.

Strengths & weaknesses: Offense - The Trojans run a West Coast offense and rely on TE Tom Nix. The OL has some weak spots and struggles at time. C Larry O'Conner is their best option and most of the successful plays rely on his protection.

Defense - The Trojans also run a 5-2 defense and rely on OLB Alonzo Darius. Their defensive line is in a tough spot as it will be counted on all season. While this until certainly gives a great effort, it simply lacks the talent to pose much of a threat.

Well, as I look over what my OC and DC have been running for their respective areas, I can already see this team needs a lot of work before we're proficiant at my style of play.

before i start, just asking if you like the 1-20 more then 1-100...i always thought 1-100 gave you a more exact idea as the three 4s at one spot could be two 11s and one 19.

Outside of that ill go to work in a bit...gotta get some lunch first.

I send a copy of the defense to Blade so he can get back to me on who to keep, who to redshirt, and who to cut.

It's time for me to go over the offense.

Quarterbacks (Yr)(Ovr/Pot)

K. Staroba (SR)(7/7) - Kendall has reached his potential and will probably be the starter in his last year as a Trojan. He has great arm strengh (14), discipline (20), and intellgence (15). Seems to me he'll fit right in with the change in offensive schemes.
C. Smith (Jr)(5/7) - 2nd string
C. Doran (So)(5/9) - Redshirt
R. Volk (Fr)(4/7) - Redshirt
K. Scott (Jr)(4/7) - 3rd string
M. Brodnax (Fr)(4/5) - 4th string

Notes: Doran is the future of this team and honestly, we look fine at QB.

Graduating: 1 Needs: 0

Halfbacks (Yr)(Ovr/Pot)

G. McGrew: (Jr)(2/4) - Not much to say here, he's the starter only because he's all I have right now. He does poses an excellent work ethic (18), intelligence (16), and decent instincts (13).
S. Shockey (Sr)(2/2) - 2nd string
M. Johnson (Fr)(1/4) - 3rd string
S. Quick (So)(1/5) - Redshirt

Notes: Well, our running game is a joke... we definitly need to recruit some HB's for the future.

Graduating: 1 Needs: 2-3

Fullbacks (Yr)(Ovr/Pot)

C. Hughes: (Sr)(6/6) - This kid has a great work ethic (20), endurance (20), and duribility (14). Too bad I only have 3 players at this position as I would love to redshirt Cortez for next year.
G. Krause (Sr)(5/5) - 2nd string
A. Anderson (Jr)(2/4) - 3rd string

Notes: Next year looks bleak at the FB position, must recruit!

Graduating: 2 Needs: 3

Wide Receivers (Yr)(Ovr/Pot)

C. Roman: (RS/So)(6/7) - Potential: The habit of dropping passes will always be a drawback to this guy's game. As he becomes more acclimated to college football, his speed will serve him nicely. I think he'll get the hang of run blocking but won't ever be much better than average. He has the potential to have pretty good running skills down the road.
C. Muhammad: (Fr)(4/6) - WR #2
D. McCreary: (Sr)(3/3) - WR #3
D. Russell: (Fr)(2/4) - WR #4
J. Johnson: (So)(1/7) - Redshirt
S. Bacon: (Sr)(1/1) - WR #5
C. Jennings: (Sr)(1/1) - WR #6

Notes: Luckily, Bacon and Jennings have great GPA's or they would have been cut. Once again, this area needs work, but we do have two semi-decent players to build around and Johnson could evolve into something down the road.

Graduating: 3 Needs: 3

Tight Ends (Yr)(Ovr/Pot)

T. Nix: (RS/So)(9/12) - The highest rated player on the team and it will be a pleasure to have him here for a few years. Potential: When he gets a firm grip on things, he'll open some eyes will his receiving skills. He'll run satisfactory pass patterns someday but that will be as good as it gets. When he fully develops, he'll have excellent speed for a tight end. This kid should become an effective run blocker with a little more time and effort. He has great agility (16), instincts (17), discipline (18), intelligence (17), and work ethic (17).
E. Leverette: (So)(4/7) - 2nd string
G. Semple: (Sr)(6/6) - 3rd string
M. Baker: (Fr)(3/8) - Redshirt

Notes: I'm starting to like the potential of this team already, at least in respect to our division. I haven't looked at our competition yet, but so far this roster is really to my liking. (Who knows about the defense).

Graduating: 1 Needs: 1-2

Offensive Tackles (Yr)(Ovr/Pot)

D. Bennett: (So)(7/9) - David a big boy, 6-3/307 currently and his ideal weight is 322. Could develop into a decent two way player.
J. Jimenez: (Sr)(5/5) - Bennett's partner as starter.
S. Conway: (Fr)(3/7) - Redshirt
E. Schwedes: (Jr)(1/5) - backup
J. Wilcox: (Fr)(1/9) - Redshirt
L. Light: (Fr)(1/5) - backup

Notes: eh...needs improvement, could be worse...

Graduating: 1 Needs: 1

Offensive Guards (Yr)(Ovr/Pot)

J. Wainright (RS/Jr)(6/6) - This guy works his butt off, don't let his ratings fool you.
G. Smith (Jr)(3/8) - starter
S. Kreider (So)(3/9) - Redshirt
R. Cash (Sr)(2/2) - backup
T. Lester (RS/Fr)(1/5) - backup
E. Stoerner (Fr)(1/5) - Redshirt

Notes: Our guys need to develop fast, if they don't we're in trouble.

Graduating: 1 Needs: 1

Centers (Yr)(Ovr/Pot)

L. O'Connor (Jr)(6/12) - Potential: As he improves his footwork, I look for him to become a solid run blocker. His body just isn't capable of developing the quickness and agility that coaches would like to see. Will become very aggressive once he feels more confident in his skills. These guys tend to be strong but this kid might set a new standard for strength by the time he's finished.
M. Wells (Sr)(3/3) - backup
L. Farmer (Jr)(2/6) - backup

Notes: O'Connor makes this a stable position, but beyond him.. nothing. His duribility is average, so I'll cross my fingers he stays healthy.

Graduating: 1 Needs: 2

Special Teams (Yr)(Ovr/Pot)

K T. Davis (So)(3/4) - Not a lot of upside, but he's all we have.
K G. Zellars (Fr)(1/4) - backup

Notes: We need to recruit a kicker for next year, period.

Graduating: 0 Needs: 1-2

P J. Charlton (RS/Fr)(3/4) - starter
P A. Tuttle (RS/So)(1/5) - backup

Notes: Same as kicking, we need a better punter.

Graduating: 0 Needs: 1-2

Overall Graduating: 11 Needs: 15-17

Final Notes: Overall, we're not as bad on paper as I thought. On the field however, could be a differnt entity altogether. Not sure exactly where I'll go as far as offensive philosophy, but I have a good idea.

I think the 1-100 is too easy and well, I've played a ton of EHM and I really like the 1-20 scale. I have any infomation you need as far as player ratings go. I wish I had somewhere to upload the html from the game, would probably help immensely.

Coach V: Yes, actually there is. Ardent's also been a part of my staff for quite some time, but I was unsure if he wanted to get back into coaching so I kept a lid on this information. (laughs) Before I knew it, he was on the next flight to Alabama. I don't think he even said, "Hello". He came in, shook my hand, and then grabbed a copy of my offensive report as it came off the printer. It's only time before he scrutinizes my work. (laughs again)

All right, gentlemen, this is a football. In order to play football here, I need a few things from you.

One, you need to work your butt off in the gym and on the field. You have to know our playbook as well. Don't know the plays? You won't play. Period. Don't put in the work in the gym or the practice field? See you later. I'll start walk ons if they show more heart than you.

Two, we have to play mistake free football. No cheating, as I call it. We simply can not afford penalties with our offense. 1st and 15, 2nd and 20 are simply unacceptable. If you commit a penalty on the field, and I don't care if it's our quarterback, you can expect to be replaced on the field for a play or two. Maybe more, depending on the severity of the penalty.

Three, and finally, let me introduce you to a play I fondly call the Annexation of Puerto Rico.

It's time for me to go over the Defense.

Defensive Ends (Yr)(Ovr/Pot)

Tim Woodson (RS/Jr)(7/9) - A wonderful talent for this level, tim has been tearing it up since taking over the starting job as a RS freshman. Should provide a nice burst of the edge, if he can stay eligible.
Spencer Scott (So)(6/9) - The other member of the pass rush from hell that next year should tear apart most of the conference foes.
Grady Lawson (Jr)(4/8) - Was penciled in as the starter by previous DC, but after scott had such a wonderful spring its hard to keep grady on the field. he will be a backup this year, a canidate for RS, but more likely will ride out his time here as a talented backup
Rob Lorenti (Fr)(3/8) - Redshirt Will start in two years if he stays on our development plan. Should continue the solid DL play we hope his mentors set this year and next.
Rodrick Wiley (Fr)(2/6) - Redshirt Potential is there to one day be a starter, but he has young counterparts that show far more of it. Will have to work hard to ever start.

Notes: Woodson and Scott should do OK this year, but next year they should wreak havok. Lorenti will be wonderful when he gets older too.

Graduating: 0 Needs: 0

Defensive Tackle (Yr)(Ovr/Pot)

Joe Stramer: (Sr)(3/3) - Starting, but only due to a lack of any actual DTs. I hope nobody tries to run up the middle on us, as they will score a lot of points if they do.
Keith Patton (Jr)(2/6) - Has shown potential in game tapes, but something isnt clicking for this young man. If he ever does, he will somewhat shore up the middle.
Taylor Hester (So)(2/4) - if he ever starts here, god help us
Chris Brown (Fr)(1/2) - He has no talent, and like every other players at DT has no brains either. So far, this is by far the weakpoint of the defense

Notes: Were screwed there. Two routes to take, either we take someone like grady lawson and move him or we pray we get a nice recruit. Anything but a 3-4 would be crazy right now with our lack of talent in here. As good as our DEs are, these guys are that bad

Graduating: 1 Needs: 2-3

Inside Linebacker (Yr)(Ovr/Pot)

Brandon Crow: (Sr)(6/6) - A fairly solid starter, should do some damage.
Jeff Csonka (Jr)(5/6) - With Crow, should hold down the middle pretty well. Will have to with out utter lack of DTs
Noah Brinker (So)(4/7) - Was penciled into be the starter, but will have to learn from the bench after csonka had a nice offseason. Should be a great starter next year.
Scott McMakin (So)(3/6) - Should be a starter in time, but for now its the bench for you HAHAHAHAHA
Terry lowe (Fr)(1/7) - Redshirt A future star for us we hope, will take time this year just learning in practice...he has the best combination of Work Ethic and Intelligence on our defense

Notes: We look pretty solid here, with current and future starters.

Graduating: 1 Needs: 0-1

Outside Linebacker (Yr)(Ovr/Pot)

Alonzo Darius: (Sr)(8/8) - Potential: The man who for 3 years has held down the fort. Hes our leader on defense, a wonderful mentor to the younger guys, and someone with a fiery personality we hope rubs off on everyone else. He will be missed.
Richie Scrabis: (Jr)(4/5) - A below average starter, and the weakest of our 4 LB starters, but we hope he doesnt hold our group back.
Gary English: (Jr)(3/6) - A nice backup who next year should challenge for the starting gig
Chad Dugans: (RS/Fr)(2/7) - Redshirt A future starter for sure here, with his 99 Work Ethic he could one day be our best player.
Bryant Dils: (So)(1/7) - Redshirt Another future starter with solid work ethic.
James Dillon: (Fr)(1/4) - Career Backup

Notes: LB is similar to DE, in that even starting 4 guys we have good depth and great future. So far were not looking too bad if DT can be shored up somehow.

Graduating: 1 Needs: 0-1

Cornerback (Yr)(Ovr/Pot)

Adrian Thomas: (RS/So)(5/6) - The young starter who had a solid rookie campaign last year. Should provide 3 more years of nice coverage for us if he can stay eligible
James Gugliemi: (Fr)(4/6) - Redshirt?? Has suprisingly battled all spring for starting spot and might pull it down. Coaches wonder if it wouldnt be better to just start White this year and RS Gugliemi if they are close in talent.
Mark White: (Sr)(4/4) - The holdover from last year who might be losing his spot to a brash young frosh. Smart guy who should provide some senior leadership to an extremly young group.
Gari Sikahema: (So)(2/6) - Redshirt A hard worker who should start in due time.
Rayfield Brown: (So)(2/6) - A young player with work ethic we wish carried into the class room. Who knows
Sherill Green: (So)(1/6) - The odd man out in a solid Sophmore class, will hope to one day start as a senior

Notes: A young group that should be solid for the next 3 seasons. Gug is a wonderful young player

Graduating: 1 Needs: 0-1

Free Safety (Yr)(Ovr/Pot)

Winslow Sharp: (So)(3/5) - A very below average starter, i hope our DEs sack the QB before the throws the ball.
David Anderson: (Fr)(1/7) - Redshirt A young guy, future starter
Je'rod Hipple: (RS/Fr)(1/6) - A backup this year and prob. all years

Notes: Two young guys should give us a nice future, but the current isnt too great.

Graduating: 0 Needs: 0

Strong Safety (Yr)(Ovr/Pot)

Ladainian Lansford (Sr)(6/6) - This guy works his butt off, don't let his ratings fool you...He will be an overachiever
Freddie Niemi (So)(3/7) - Redshirt The future starter...dumb, doesnt work out, but naturally gifted
Rodney Brown (Jr)(2/4) - Not a great talent, but works hard and will be an average backup

Notes: Lansford is solid now, Niemi might be good in the future

Graduating: 1 Needs: 1-2

Overall Graduating: 5 Needs: 3-8

Final Notes: We have some very weak areas(DE, FS) and some strong areas(DE, LB, CB). I cant tell how good we really are without knowing what kind of talent our conference foes have. Generally i am cautiously optimistic, but that could dissipate quickly. We dont have any body with double digit future like the offense, so hopefully we dont do too poorly.

DEFENSIVE CAPTAIN: Alonzo Darius

Very nice Blade! I like how you used the same format.

At least it looks like this defense can grow together. I'll get with you on what defensive philosopy you think we should use. Just from looking at your report, looks like a 3-4 could suit us well?

I could not redshirt OLB C. Dugans (he's a RS/Fr this year) or CB G. Sikahema due to roster restrictions (although I figured you would rather have J. Gugliemi redshirtted instead.

Coaches, I'm going to go with a "balanced" offense. I know our RB isn't that great, but I want to get this team heading towards my type of offense.

Now, what defense to use?

4-3
4-4
4-6
4-2-5
3-4
3-3-5
5-2

Overall, it looks like you want a far amount more recruits on O then D so lets hope the southeast has some nice O depth this year

I'd suggest the 3-4. DT is our weakest position, and we look better at ILB.

OOG: I'd really like input on how the game is, as I'm considering asking my wife to buy it for me for Christmas.

Great minds think alike.

I'd prefer we pass a little more out of necessity. Unless, of course, we find a way to give the ball to the fullback more than the halfback.

Ask your wife for it. You won't regret it. I'm having so much fun (I'll probably do a dynasty at some point, but starting at USC doesn't make for a great dynasty I've decided.)

Todd (and the rest of the staff), I'm enjoying the dynasty. I'll be following along

Id have to agree with him again here...while i understand implementing our pro set is important, i think we really need to be a passing team this season, either shotgun or single back...once we get an actual running back on our squad then we start the shift. We have nice recievers and a wonderful TE/QB, so lets take advanatge of that and win a few extra games we might not if we ran. Id be shocked if our RBs top 3 yards a carry as is.

That's why I went to a balanced attack, which is a great blend of passing and a bit of running as well.

Thanks for the input.

Ok gentlemen, our first opponent is the unranked Akron Zips.

Offense: The Zips run a Vertical Passing offense and rely on TE Dan Smith. The OL has some weak spots and struggles at times. OG Darren Hall is their best option and most of the successful plays rely on his protection.

Defense: The Zips also run a 4-4 defense and rely on FS Micky Rolovich. Their DBs makeup the team's defensive unit and one that will be under a lot of pressure this season. They have the talent to carry the defense for stretches, but not for the entire season.

The Zips are ran by Head Coach, Donny Spencer. Donny has 19 years of coaching experience and looks to that for his advantage over the Trojans. They also have a talented RB by the name of Iheanyi Tolar.

Keys: Talk about an uneven matchup. They should run the ball a lot on our weak DTs. Our LBs will have to tackle well, or it could be a long day for us.

On the offensive side of the ball, we can't run.. so we'll be playing again to Akron's strength, their secondary.

Prediction: My heart says to pump the team up and claim a victory, but I just don't like the matchup very well, even if we are at home.

The Press likes Akron in a big victory itself:

Akron <<<<< OFF >>>>> Troy
Akron <<<<< DEF >>>>> Troy
Akron <<<<< ST >>>>> Troy

Akron <<<<< OVR >>>>> Troy

Key matchup:

RB Iheanyi Tolar
Troy front seven.

No pressure. But I went to school with a TE named Dan Smith that signed out of high school with the Miami Hurricanes.

Should we run the vertical formation too since our OC is proficient in that this year?

The only one i see on defense that the reccomendation doesnt agree with me is on 4th LB, the 3-4 ILB spot. It has csonka, the higher rated guy, on bench for brinker who has better potential. You should analyze the two and decide for yourself if csonka is close enough where the time will help him develop

Not a bad start to the season. I like the playcalling by our OC, looks like we have some sort of offense thus far and my balanced attack worked well. Defensively, I'm quite happy at how hard our guys hit and how good our LB core and DEs look. I know it's only one game, but we have a bye in Week 2 so we can heal up and get ready for Vanderbilt.

Troy, Ala: Game 1 Press conference

Coach V: First of all I would like to say I haven't spoken with my coaches yet, but very happy with our performance today. We dominated a good Akron bunch and I hope this game is the start of something great here in Troy.

Ray Melink: Coach, the team really had a lot of spunk today, can you explain your methods of motivation?

Coach V: Well, if you can't get up for the first game of the season in your own backyard, I don't want you on this team. (smiles) This team showed a lot of character today, but it's only going to get harder.

Josh Cooper: I know you want to get back to the locker room Coach, but can you give your thoughts on the team as a whole today, I mean.. what stood out as you Coached your first game for the Trojans?

Coach V: Well, TE Tom Nix showed he can be a big play receiver and QB Kendall Staroba looked ok for his first start. On defense, we made Akron play to our strengths and I'm really happy with OLB Alonzo Darius and DE Tim Woodson. Our LB core had 2 INTs and our team had 5 sacks. Heck, K Greg Zellars had one heck of a game with 4/4 FGs, with a long of 41 yards. (pause) I'm pleased, very pleased with our performance, thanks for your questions.

Moderator: We thank Coach V for his time.

End of conference

We'll get rid of him next year if we have to. It's our team. I hope I don't bite my tongue, but I feel we need to implement our system right away.

For now, I'll leave it like it is and you can tell me if I need to change it.
