MAJOR JUNIOR

Kevin Thomas: Kevin Thomas had another huge season, and his stock keeps on rising with the NHL Draft looming. Thomas, a part of the US U-20 Gold Medal winning team put up 37 goals and 70 assists, putting him 7th in the OHL in scoring. Thomas is expected to be a top 15 pick in the Draft.

Mike had an 6 goals and 47 assists during the regular season, and come playoff time he lead Saint Johns to the QMJHL finals where they lost in 7 to P.E.I. He is expected to be a top 5 pick in the Draft.

Nielsen was prominent on TSN all season long with his highlight reel goals, and hopes to parlay that into a top 5 draft pick in next seasons NHL Draft.

Karl Bernal: Bernal was close to leading the WHL in scoring again. In fact, he improved over his #'s from last year, and that's with missing games to represent the US in the WJC. Bernal had an incredible 88 goals and 86 assists, but was beat out by his linemate Andy Grimard who looks like a shue in as the #1 pick in the 2011 draft. Grimard had 70 goals and 108 assists. Want your mind really blown though? In 16 playoff games, Bernal had __54 ASSISTS__. He assissted on everyone but 3 Pats goals. Unfuckingreal. He won the WHL Goal Scoring Title and was named to the All CHL Team, and may've gotten himself into the top 5.

Owen Hunter: Owen Hunter was big for the US in the WJC, showing a penchant for the late heroics. At Dartmouth he was keyed in on every single time he set foot on the ice. Still, he had a solid Freshman year with 17 goals and 14 assists. Scouts noticed his raw ability and could be a first round pick.

2008-09 stats: 50 GP, 17 G, 14 A, 31 PT, + 4


Dan Ertmann: Dan Ertmann won a gold medal but he didn't see much ice time in Germany. That changed when he got to MSU-Mankato, where he had a very solid 11 goals and 10 assists for the worst team in the WCHA. He, like Hunter showed flashes of brilliance but was constantly keyed in on. Still, he is another kid who could crack the first round if teams see his potential.

AMERICAN JUNIORS

Daniel Turner: It can't get much better for Daniel Turner. He won a gold medal, committed to Wisconsin and will be drafted in the NHL Draft. He put up similiar numbers for Sioux Falls this season like he did last season, but he was all over the ice and made his presence known at the WJC's, which surely helped his stock.

Ivan Carrillo: Carrillo was just like Dan Turner. He won his own gold medal (ironically playing with Turner), committed to Maine and is waiting to hear his name called in the NHL Draft. He also grew quite a bit, now standing a 6'5" and weighing 220 lbs, his body frame makes scouts drool. Omaha will miss Ivan's presence, but Maine will welcome it with open arms.

Sean Treacy: He did it all. He won the USA the Gold at the WJC's and did it all as a darkhorse. Many have to think come next years pre-season draft rankings Treacy will be the top goalie ranked, and why not? He was MVP of the entire WJC. Treacy committed to Maine, and will join WJC teammate Ivan Carrillo as a Blackbear. Treacy was phenominal for Bozeman, but Bozeman wasn't phenominal for him, thus the poor record, all stats considered.

Colton Mayes: Mayes somehow has fallen off the charts, and it's a shame, because his passing is considered one of the best in the US. Mayes was good for Springfield, and got a D-III roster spot with Lawerence out of it, but it was a bitter dissappointment considering the hype of two years ago. Hopefully Mayes keeps at it and turns his story into one we all hear when he's playing in the NHL, whenever that may be.

HIGH SCHOOL

Joe Mazeika: The youngest member of the WJC team capped off his high school career with back to back Mr. Hockeys in the state of Michigan and four consecutive State Titles. Mazeika was Mr. Dependable for the Shamrocks, and will now look forward to his Freshman year at Harvard, and his draft, be it next year, or the year after, depending on how his eligibility works out. Regardless, pencil him in for the next two WJC's.

The Colorado Avalanche select RW Karl Bernal

OVERVIEW

Karl Bernal becomes only the 4th American ever to be taken #1 (Brian Lawton, Bryan Berard and Rick DiPietro) and deservedly so, as Bernal absolutely torched the WHL in two seasons, racking up nearly 300 points, and putting up 54 assists on 16 playoff games! Bernal will be best remembered at this point for his penalty shot goal in the WJC Finals vs Sweden, but beyond the flashy goals and amazing assists is a solid defensive game, a sound physical game and a great poise for an 18 year old.

Colorado is filled with 3rd and 4th liners at it's wings right now, though they still have free agency to address some needs, but with not many options under contract, and not the strongest farm system, it's entirely possible Bernal could make a dent on the Avs roster this year, and if not, then in 2011 for sure.

The Los Angeles Kings select D Mike Ritschel

OVERVIEW

Mike Ritschel has been the top defensemen in the QMJHL the past two seasons, and was the Captain of the World Junior Championships Gold Medal winning United States team. It's quite fitting Mike Ritschel gets drafted by the Kings because numerous scouts conmpare him to Rob Blake, who was a fixture on the LA blueline for numerous years. Ritschel might not have his kind of offensive fire power, but his poise and leadership and physical play are all in the vain of Rob Blake.

The Kings current crop of defensemen is lead by Aaron Miller, who is nearing retirement, and after that, there isn't anything worth mentioning. It's quite possible Ritschel could make the leap straight to the NHL this year, as he almost a sure thing to be invited to the Kings training camp. Ritschel is most interesting to see in regards to next season because he could step in right now, it just depends on if LA wants to rush him.

Columbus indeed won the cup, sweeping New Jersey.

Their top three scorers were Nash (100 points), Zherdev (88 points) and Brule (68 points). Basically it was one line and solid D.

OVERVIEW

Owen Hunter's pure offensive talent netted him the distinction of being the 15th overall pick in the draft, and deservedly so. He has everything you look for in a playmaker: good hands, great vision, quick shot and he is always moving. Hunter had a decent Freshman year at Dartmouth but he's expected to flourish next year as a Sophmore. Hunter though played himself into the top 15 according to many scouts thanks to his work at the WJC in Germany. Hunter could use work developing his defensive game a little longer, but by the time he turns 20, he'll be playing pro hockey, be it in the AHL or NHL.

Carolina has a solid offense right now lead by Brad Richards, Eric Staal and Brian Gionta, but unfortunatley, the latter two struggled this season which could've lead to Hunter being taken by a team with some young guns. One scout did say Owen Hunter has the ability to be a 40 goal scorer in the NHL, so we'll just have to see how it shakes out.

The New Jersey Devils select LW Kevin Thomas

OVERVIEW

Kevin Thomas could be the biggest enigma in the draft, according to several websites. Thomas has so much talent, but in some aspects his game is limited. He can make every pass you can think so, and he could be one of the deadliest players in the game on a breakaway immediatley, but he won't be a guy who battles for you in the corners, and he won't put many vicious hits on anyone, but he'll make people look good. If he plays with the right guys he could be an offensive threat, but if he's flying solo, his play could be limited.

The Devils have an older offense, but they are coming off of a Stanley Cup finals run, however improbable as it were. Still, they have some decent guys on their farm, and Thomas, with some seasoning will become a household name if brought along correctly, which means another year or so in the O and the a year or two more in the AHL. If he gets rushed, he could suffer greatly.

WITH THE THIRTEITH PICK THE 2009 NHL DRAFT ...

The Columbus Blue Jackets select RW Dan Ertmann

OVERVIEW

Dan Ertmann gets drafted by the reigning Stanley Cup champs, but he has a long ways to go before he is playing everyday in the NHL. Ertmann has the gift to score goals, but he needs to work on setting guys up. Ertmann's biggest problem though is his propencity to take off shifts and lollygag back on defense. Columbus plays a team defense game that relies on all five guys sticking to their man and giving it their all every shift. That's something that can only be gained with maturity, which Ertmann will hopefully earn with some more time at MSU-Mankato.

Columbus can be a good fit though for Ertmann because they lack serious offensive punch after their top line of Nash/Zherdev/Brule. Ertmann is another young gun who can play with their top three young guns and give them two line depth both even strength and on the power play, where Ertmann could be a specialist. This is a good fit though because he will have time to mature, or so you'd think, since no Stanley Cup Champion team should need to rely on an 18 year old rookie in their defense year.

SECOND ROUND NOTABLES

2.12 - Florida Panthers: Daniel Turner, D, Wisconsin Badgers of the NCAA

Daniel Turner was a solid second round selection and will be counted on to develope at Wisconsin where his physical play will fit right in in the rough and tumble WCHA. Turner could be a guy who becomes a #1 or #2 defensemen with the right coaching and the right system.

2.16 - Boston Bruins: Ivan Carrillo, D, Maine Black Bears of the NCAA

Ivan Carrillo is a big body who physically is ready for the NHL, but definetly not mentally. Carrillo has to work on the chip on his shoulder, or else he'll get schooled by some of the biggest and baddest enforcers the NHL has to offer. Carrillo will probably play all four years at Maine, then make the transition to the AHL, and soon to the NHL where at the age of 24 or 25, he could become a force physically.

2009-10 Season Preview

NHL

Mike Ritschel: Mike Ritschel isn't wearing #4, but he is wearing #3, and he is on the LA King's top defensive pairing alongside Vishnovsky. He isn't being utilized on the power play, but he is also on the #1 short handed unit for both 5 on 4 and 5 on 3 showing that Andy Murray has supreme confidence in an 18 year old playing at the highest level. The Kings aren't going to be great, but with solid play defensivley and in net, they're a possible 8th seed.


Karl Bernal: Bernal, the #1 pick in the 2009 draft is wearing #41 for the Colorado Avalanche, a number he picked because he said that's going to be the number of goals he averages per season for his career. Bernal is starting off on the third line playing with Eric Nystrom and 21 year old Benjamin Breault. Bernal is also on the 2nd PP line for 5 on 4 and 5 on 3. The hope is to get Bernal going so he can get playing on the second line along side Marek Svatos. The Avs top line consists of Kris Beech, Milan Hejduk and Wojtek Wolski. Some good young skaters in that group.


MAJOR JUNIOR

Kevin Thomas: Thomas was the 22nd pick in the draft to the Devils, but he was expected to go within the top 15, which has left Thomas with a bitter taste in his mouth. With that said, he's back in Sarnia ready to make a run at the OHL Scoring Title in his third year in the league. The Sting could make a run at the CHL Memorial Cup if Thomas plays his game.

NHL Rights: New Jersey Devils (1.22)

Rob Nielsen: With Bernal out of the WHL, Nielsen is the best American by far in the WHL, and he is ready to put all the doubters to rest, and show that he should be the second American in a row to be taken #1 in the Draft. Nielsen has Lethbridge feeling the Hollywood vibe, and now he is ready to take that step into the WHL Scoring Elite, and crack the top 3. And maybe crack some skulls along the way.

NHL Preliminary Draft Ranking: #7


NCAA

Owen Hunter: Hunter is back in his sophmore year at Dartmouth with renewed confidence after being selected with the 15th pick in the NHL Draft by Carolina. Grumblings are already being made by the Dartmouth staff that they'll lose Hunter at the seasons end, and while there is no concrete truth to that, it is entirely possible that this will happen. Hunter is expected to lead the Big Green to the tournament and from there, it's anyones guess what'll happen.

NHL Rights: Carolina Hurricanes (1.15)


Dan Ertmann: Ertmann was the final pick of the 1st round, going to the reigning Stanley Cup Champion Columbus Blue Jackets. The pick was one that confused some, although Ertmann was rated right around that area, people just felt his all all around game didn't warrant first round consideration. Still, Ertmann was the pick and now will be entering his Sophmore year at MSU-Mankato where he is hoping to lead them into the top of the WCHA. Ertmann is a guy many believe will be around for the long hall at MSU-M but if he starts to play like he can, then you never know.

NHL Rights: Columbus Blue Jackets (1.30)


Daniel Turner: Daniel Turner was the 12th pick in the 2nd round to the Florida Panthers, a possible steal from Floridas perspective. Turner is now enrolled with the Wisconsin Badgers who are a favorite to reach this years Frozen Four. He is someone who has developed his offense every season, but has maintained his bread and butter physical play. With some seasoning in the NCAA for a few years, Turner is a candidate to make the Panthers roster and be an intregal part of the Panthers for years to come.

NHL Rights: Florida Panthers (2.12)


Ivan Carrillo: Carrillo enrolled with Maine, who is another strong candidate to go to the Frozen Four, thanks in part to the top recruiting class in the Nation, headlined by Sean Treacy and Carrillo. Carrillo is a big body who was taken by Boston in the 2nd round and can be one of the NHL's best enforcers and most imtimidating presences if he can develope his skating. Four years at Maine will be the factor in how Carrillo's career plays out.

NHL Rights: Boston Bruins (2.16)


Sean Treacy: The top recruit in America, Treacy who became so highly coveted after his miraculous WJC tournament, much like last American Gold Medalist goalie Al Montoya decided to take his craft to the Maine Black Bears, where they're expected to battle it out with Wisconsin, Michigan and Harvard for this years Frozen Four. Treacy is at the top of his game and is expected to be a top 15 pick in the upcoming NHL Draft. There's nothing he can't do.

NHL Preliminary Draft Ranking: #11


Joe Mazeika: Joe Mazeika has single handedly brought Harvard into Frozen Four contention. He was the #2 prospect according to just about every scouting bureau, and should pay imediate dividence for Harvard. He could be a one and done in school, that's how highly touted he is, and in truth, how good he is. Though his early ranking may not do him total justice, you should remember Karl Bernal was almost in the same boat and look at what happened.

NHL Preliminary Draft Ranking: #14


Colton Mayes: Mayes enrolled at D-III school Lawerence, and is expected to be their top player. He's hoping the D-III route will lead to an NCAA schollie. Some people have given up on Mayes but his intangibles make him an interesting case based on the simple fact that you just can't teach those. If Mayes keeps putting in the effort, he could be rewarded, it just is going to take him a lot longer then others.

USA vs CANADA

FIRST PERIOD

The United States decided it was going to go all out in the first periold, looking to lay the wood to any Canadien player who came near the puck. Unfortunatley the plan backfired as the United States was penalized five times. Canada took complete advantage netting two PP goals and a an even strength goal as one penalty let out. Canada put an ASTOUNDING 29 shots on net in the first period, but Sean Treacy made 26 saves. Still, it was looking bleak for America, especially considering they took a penalty to end the second.

SECOND PERIOD

Canada wasted no time making it 4-0 on their 3rd PP goal to start the second, and it looked like America was about to be run out of the building. Then, something happened. You know the old addage big players make big plays on big days? Well, enter Owen Hunter, Rob Nielsen and Sean Treacy. Owen Hunter got the ball rolling with two goals in four minutes to cut the US defecit to 4-2. Then the fourth line made waves, as Frederik Csisar put one in the back of the net to make it a one goal lead. One Canada penalty later and it was Aaron Lewis from Nielsen and Mazeika on the Power Play. With the German crowd going nuts, it seemed like the US was going to ride the momentum into the third.

THIRD PERIOD

The third period was like the first however, as the US took several stupid penalties, but Sean Treacy decided he would not let the US die. Treacy made 20 more stops in the third, giving him 54 through regulation. The US only mustered 7 shots in the third, and now the game was tied, and would be heading into OT.

OVERTIME

Twelve minutes into OT and it was Andy Grimard, the top player in this years Draft according to most scouts breaking in on the top goalie in this years draft, Sean Treacy on a breakaway. Treacy made an acrobatic leg save however, to keep the game going. Then with four minutes left in OT, Brian Weber took an errant Canadien pass in all alone, but Canadien Goalie Dandinault made his own acrobatic save, this time with the glove, to keep it tied, and send us into a shootout.

SHOOTOUT

Kevin Thomas would shoot first for the US, and he would score on a pretty goal stickside. Canada sent Dale Hunt in on Sean Treacy who denied him with a sprawling stick save. Owen Hunter was up next for America, and like he did all game, he made a play, this time sniping Dandinault with a shot high blocker side. With the pressure now on Canada, James Livingston was up. He couldn't beat Treacy though and the score was 2-0. Dan Ertmann was up with the chance to clinch it for the US but was stoned on a nice save. Up came Rile McIntosh for the Canadiens who forced a puck past Treacy to give Canada some hope at 2-1. But enter Rob Nielsen. When his team needs him most, Nielsen pulled a one handed goal (think Jiri Lethonen) to put the USA up 3-1. Wh Craig Jennings needing to score to keep Canada alive, Sean Treacy once again proved his worth with another big save, to give the USA a 3-1 win in the shootout!
