Righting a Wrong: 1982 Orioles Replay

Growing up in the Baltimore suburbs, I became an Orioles fan shortly after my birth in 1969. My family had lived in Maryland since WW2, and my Dad would tell me stories about Johnny Unitas, Lenny Moore, Brooks Robinson, Boog Powell, etc. I would soon have my own heroes - guys like Bert Jones, Roger Carr, Eddie Murray, Lee May and even guys like Andres Mora. As a child, I had no idea how lucky I was being able to cheer for the Colts (who soon became quite miserable) and the Orioles (who were still in the midst of playing ball "The Oriole Way).

In 1982, at the age of 13, the O's "suffered" through an odd year. The pitching wasn't as dominating as it had been in the past and the team's record suffered. As with all Earl Weaver teams, however, the O's really turned it on when September rolled around. I still have an article from the Philadelphia Inquirer (we had moved to Pennsylvania in 1981) stating (and I paraphrase), "When September rolls around, one can be assured that Nebraska will win their first 2 games by a combined score of 126 to 6, and the Orioles will go about 25-5." The Orioles wouldn't do quite as well in September of '82 (they managed only a 22-10 record after Aug. 31st), but the end of the season pennant race was probably my most memorable.

At the end of the season, the O's found themselves 3-games behind the Milwaukee Brewers with 4 games left to play. As luck would have it, they would be facing the Brewers at home the final weekend. Friday would be a make-up doubleheader (remember those?), followed by a game on Saturday and Sunday. Thus, the Orioles would have to sweep all 4 games in order to head into the ALCS against the Angels. The O's swept the doubleheader 8-3 and 7-1 (I listened to both games on WFBR 1300 - and the reception was HORRIBLE in Pennsylvania). On Saturday, the O's would win again, 11-3. Finally, the last game was broadcast on national TV - Jim Palmer vs. (hired gun) Don Sutton. Robin Yount hit two homeruns (solidifying his MVP season) and the Brewers would romp to a 10-2 victory. I was heartbroken, but only had to wait a year for a World Series championship. I've been waiting ever since - ha!

So...laying the groundwork...I will be replaying the 1982 baseball season using Strat-o-matic V11. I will be playing the role of Earl Weaver, guiding this team to (hopefully) their rightful "place" - 1982 World Series Champions.

Rules:

Using all Strat "MAX Rules" for added realism.
Managing and playing all Baltimore games, use the computer to replay the rest of the AL games as well as the NL.
Using Primary lineups with rest (no "as-played lineups")
Minor leaguers are eligible, so every manager will have access to everyone who played for the respective teams in 1982, no matter when they debuted.
Using injuries - will this have an impact on the races?
The computer will limit overusage of players (as will I)

Mario Soto came through with a solid 7 innings at Riverfront Stadium as the
Cincinnati Reds won a thriller over the Chicago Cubs, 2 to 1.

The deciding run was scored by Cincinnati in the 9th. After an out was
recorded, Ron Oester tripled. Mike Vail was a strikeout victim, unable to
help out. Duane Walker then lined a one-base hit making Cincinnati the
winners and sending the 10,681 fans home happy. Chicago was out-hit by
Cincinnati, 9 hits to 3.

The win was credited to Jim Kern(1-0) who went 2 innings allowing no runs.
Dick Tidrow(0-1) took the loss in relief. He allowed 3 hits and no walks in
1 and 1/3 innings.

I finished opening day - the only other game was Kansas City (Gura) at Baltimore (D. Martinez). I'll post the boxscore later. I'm using the as played schedules so the beginning of the season is VERY quirky. I'm thinking there were a lot of rain/snow outs as the O's very rarely play two days in a row but play a lot of doubleheaders (as do quite a number of other teams).

Joaquin Andujar blanked Houston in a very well-pitched complete game as the
St. Louis Cardinals defeated the Houston Astros by a score of 5 to 0 at The
Astrodome.

Andujar(1-0) had a strong outing. He allowed only 8 hits and no walks in 9
innings. St. Louis banged out 7 on the afternoon. The loss was charged to
Joe Niekro(0-1). He allowed 4 hits and 2 walks in 7 innings.

Bill Laskey had a strong outing at Dodger Stadium where the San Francisco

San Francisco set the tone of the game in the first inning scoring a single
run utilizing 2 base hits. Chili Davis lined a one-base hit. Two outs later
Darrell Evans stepped up to the plate and he drew a walk. Reggie Smith then
ripped a base-knock scoring the run. The early run support proved sufficient
for Laskey(1-0) and San Francisco. That was all the run support Laskey
required. The pitchers took over after the 2nd inning as neither team was
able to score again.

Fernando Valenzuela(0-1) was charged with the loss. He surrendered 8 hits and

Phil Niekro pitched 7 strong innings at Jack Murphy Stadium as the Atlanta

The score was knotted at 3 after nine innings. Atlanta came out the victor in
the 13th inning. Rafael Ramirez laced a base-hit. After an out was
recorded, Bruce Benedict came up and he banged out a single. Benedict took
second on the throw. Larry Whisenton then laced a base-knock scoring the

fought contest.

The deciding run was scored by Seattle in the top of the 8th. After an out
was recorded, Todd Cruz smashed a bases-empty 'big-fly' (his 1st of the
season). Seattle had 8 hits for the afternoon.

The win was credited to Floyd Bannister(1-0) who went 7 and 1/3 innings
allowing 2 runs. Bill Caudill gained credit for his 1st save. Brad
Havens(0-1) took the loss. He allowed 3 homeruns in 7 and 1/3 innings of

Brian Downing blasted a homerun and had 5 RBI at Oakland Co Stadium as the
California Angels beat the Oakland A's by the count of 9 to 3.

Downing had a big day with his bat. He clubbed a three-run home run (his 1st
of the season) in the 3rd inning and lashed a single scoring two baserunners
in the 6th inning. For the game California out-hit Oakland 15 to 8.

Ken Forsch(1-0) was the winner allowing 3 runs in 8 innings. Matt Keough(0-1)
was the losing pitcher. He allowed a few too many baserunners giving up 13
hits and 4 walks in 8 and 1/3 innings.

Beause of rain/snow, we have off the 7th through the 9th and don't play again until a doubleheader against Boston on the 10th. Therefore, I'm going to autoplay the majority of the games, but I may watch Nolan Ryan vs. the Cardinals and the Angels against Oakland to see if Reggie can make it two HRs in two games for his new team.

I watched the St. Louis - Houston game to catch Nolan Ryan's first outing of the year. He struck out Lonnie Smith to begin the game, but then quickly faltered, losing his control and giving up the longball. He gave up 5 runs through the first 3 innings, but then quickly settled down, retiring his last 11 batters before being lifted for a pinch hitter in the 7th. Still, it wasn't enough as the Cardinals start the season 2-0 with a 6-3 victory.

Bruce Berenyi allowed John McNamara to rest his bullpen, tossing a complete
game at Riverfront Stadium as the Cincinnati Reds beat the Chicago Cubs 3 to
1.

Berenyi(1-0) was in control of the game from the outset. He was stingy on the
mound, allowing just 7 hits and 3 walks in 9 innings. Cincinnati managed
only 5 on the afternoon.

Doug Bird(0-1) was the losing pitcher. He gave up 4 hits and 3 walks in 6
innings.

Darrell Evans had 2 base hits and 2 RBI as the San Francisco Giants outscored

San Francisco scored 4 runs in the 2nd inning with the help of 4 hits. That
early scoring was all that Rich Gale(1-0) needed. San Francisco ended up
with 11 hits for the game while Los Angeles had 6.

Dave Dravecky went 3 and one third strong innings at Jack Murphy Stadium where
the San Diego Padres beat the Atlanta Braves 3 to 2.

San Diego claimed the early lead in the first inning when they tallied 2 runs
on 3 hits. The key offensive moment was provided by Terry Kennedy who
excited the crowd when he doubled scoring two baserunners. San Diego out-hit
Atlanta for the game, 9 hits to 5.

The winning pitcher was John Montefusco(1-0) who allowed 2 runs in 5 and 2/3
innings. Montefusco got help from Dravecky who earned his 1st save. Rick
Mahler(0-1) ended up with the loss.

'I always am most impressed when a pitcher finds a way to win even without his
best stuff,' Dick Williams said after the game. 'Montefusco did not have
command of his pitches most of the afternoon, but he proved he really knew
how to pitch!'

At The Astrodome the St. Louis Cardinals outscored the Houston Astros 6 to
3.

St. Louis wasted no time and took the lead in the first inning with 2 runs
using 3 hits. After two were out George Hendrick initiated the scoring spurt
when he ripped a base-knock. Hendrick was safe at second on a stolen base.
Nolan Ryan then unleashed a wild pitch. Darrell Porter stepped in and he

inning and popped a two-run clout over the fence (his 1st of the season) in
the 4th inning. Minnesota had 13 hits for the game and Seattle had 10.

runs. Terry Felton earned his 1st save. Gaylord Perry(0-1) was hit with the
loss. He was unable to control the Minnesota offense and allowed 8 hits and

'big-fly' (his 1st of the season). After another out, Reggie Jackson was the
next batter, but he struck out. Decinces then became the sole author of the
rally when he cracked a bases-empty home run. Oakland threatened in the 9th
but California was able to put down the rally.

The victory went to Geoff Zahn(1-0) who went 7 and 1/3 innings, allowing 2
runs. Doug Corbett gained credit for his 1st save. Rick Langford(0-1) was
the loser. He was touched for 3 homeruns in his 9 innings of work.

Steve Carlton reeled off a total of 10 strikeouts at Veterans Stadium as the
Philadelphia Phillies came back dramatically to top the New York Mets by the

Philadelphia scored the decisive runs in a big bottom of the 9th inning
scoring 2 runs using 3 hits. Pete Rose led off and started the rally when he
banged out a single. Gary Matthews next to the plate and he doubled. Neil
Allen then let a pitch get away from him plating a run. Mike Schmidt was the
next batter, but he struck out. Bo Diaz stepped into the box and laced a
base-hit resulting in an exciting win for Philadelphia and a wild post-game
celebration by the home town fans. Philadelphia had 11 hits for the
afternoon while New York had 8.

The winning pitcher was Sid Monge(1-0) who allowed no runs in 1 inning.
Allen(0-1) ended up with the loss in relief. 'We just wouldn't give up,'

Left fielder Dale Murphy had 2 base hits and Rick Camp took a no-hitter into
the 6th inning as the Atlanta Braves defeated the Houston Astros by the score
of 5 to 2 at Fulton Co Stadium.

Camp(1-0) pitched well for Atlanta in their victory. He went 8 and 1/3
innings allowing 6 hits and no walks. The right-handed Camp lost his chance
for a no-hitter when Mike Ivie singled with nobody out in the 6th inning.
Atlanta managed 8 in their victory.

Camp got relief help from Gene Garber who gained credit for his 1st save.
Vern Ruhle(0-1) was given the loss. He pitched 5 innings giving up 5 hits
and 2 walks.

20,755 fans were treated to a fine game at Wrigley Field as only one run
separated the combatants at game's end. The Chicago Cubs won by the slimmest
of margins, 4 to 3.

The score was knotted at 3 after nine innings. Chicago won the game in the
10th inning. After an out was recorded, Leon Durham hit a single. Keith
Moreland was a strikeout victim, unable to help out. Jody Davis then drew a
walk. Junior Kennedy was up next and he lined a single resulting in a mighty
exciting win for Chicago and the 20,755 home town fans in attendance.
Chicago had 13 hits for the game and New York had 9.

Dan Larson(1-0) allowed no runs in 1 inning, and picked up the victory. Craig
Swan(0-1) was given the loss in relief. He gave up 2 hits and 1 walk in 2/3
of an inning.

Renie Martin(1-0) and Tom Seaver(0-1) treated the Cincinnati fans to a fine
pitching duel at Riverfront Stadium. The San Francisco Giants eventually
emerged as victors over the Cincinnati Reds by the score of 3 to 1.

San Francisco jumped on top to stay in the 2nd inning plating an isolated run
utilizing 2 base hits. Milt May laced a base-hit. Max Venable next to the
plate and he doubled. Johnnie Lemaster then hit a sacrifice fly scoring the
run. For the game San Francisco out-hit Cincinnati 9 to 4.

Martin got help from Gary Lavelle who earned his 1st save.

In a good matchup it was the Los Angeles Dodgers 7, the San Diego Padres 5 at
Dodger Stadium.

San Diego was unable to recover after Los Angeles went ahead in the 6th inning
with 2 runs. Ron Cey kicked off the action when he drew a walk. Bill
Russell stepped up next and he laid down a sacrifice bunt. After another
out, Burt Hooton stepped up to the plate and he lifted one out of the park
for a two run home run. Los Angeles finished with 9 hits in the victory.

The win went to Hooton(1-0) who allowed 5 runs in 7 and 2/3 innings. Hooton
got help from Terry Forster who was credited with his 1st save. Eric
Show(0-1) was the loser. He allowed a few too many baserunners giving up 9
hits and 2 walks in 6 innings.

MONTREAL AT PHILADELPHIA

Bill Gullickson went the distance at Veterans Stadium where the Montreal Expos
beat the Philadelphia Phillies by the score of 10 to 2.

Montreal set the tone of the game in the first inning scoring 2 runs on 2
hits. Tim Raines led off and started the rally when he lashed a single. Al
Oliver stepped into the batter's box and he doubled bringing in a run. After
an out was recorded, Gary Carter came up and he would ground out scoring the
final run of the inning. Montreal banged out 11 on the afternoon.

The win was credited to Gullickson(1-0) who went the whole way allowing 2
runs. Mike Krukow(0-1) was charged with the loss. He gave up 5 runs in 3
innings of work.


PITTSBURGH AT ST. LOUIS

At Bush Stadium the St. Louis Cardinals outscored the Pittsburgh Pirates 4 to
1.

Pittsburgh never recovered after St. Louis took the lead in the bottom of the
2nd inning scoring one runner. Darrell Porter drew a walk. Ken Oberkfell
next to the plate and he stroked a one-base hit. After an out was recorded,
Rick Rhoden stepped up to the plate and he threw one that got by the catcher
for a passed ball. Tommy Herr came up and he would ground out scoring the
run. St. Louis managed 10 in their victory.

Dave Lapoint(1-0) got the win allowing 1 run in 7 and 2/3 innings. Bruce
Sutter recorded the save, his 1st. Rhoden(0-1) took the loss. He allowed 4
runs and 10 hits in 8 innings.
