Will the committee be told to put the Dookies in the tournament?

Sources: Duke out of ACC tournament after positive COVID-19 result within program

Duke has zero chance at the NCAA. They would have had to at least go to the title game. No chance now.

I just saw rules be adjusted in order to get the most eyeballs possible on the college football playoffs. Duke does not deserve to be in the tournament for basketball reasons. That is for sure. The number of people trying to figure out a way to adjust the rules to get them into the tournament, whether at the NCAA or CBS is greater than zero. That is also for sure.

I will say that I've rarely seen a team have a player quit mid-season and be improved so dramatically by the absence

Watched the Iowa women play last night. Iowa has the leading scorer in the nation in Freshman Caitlin Clark who averaged 27.4 points a game, but more impressive, she averaged 7 assists a game as well.

Evidently the NCAA protocol will be if a team has to drop out between Monday and the start of play, they will be replaced with a non-selected team, and that team will _go into the seed of the team removed_. So if a #1 seed has to drop, they will be replaced by the 69th team, as a #1 seed. Once play begins, as long a team has 5 healthy players, they are eligible to continue.

Although this makes the amateur argument a little moot, does it not? Perhaps after a nice dunk, they can slap the chevy logo on your screen. "That dunk was brought to you by Chevy, check out the new Silverado!"

There's really no other way to do it, but yeah, you just hope a high seed doesn't have to pull out.

Can you imagine if Duke or UK were actually in the last 4 in, and then Baylor or Gonzaga pulled out and were replaced by one of them?

Would they then repeat this to replace the NIT team that got moved up? Or does that end up being a walkover game for a low seed there?

They don't mention it here. Basically the 4 #1 NIT seeds are the first in line to take a NCAA Tourney slot if a team withdraws after Selection Sunday and before games begin:

How does this impact gambling? Going to be a lot of potential for chaos and shenanigans there, if news leaks prior to teams dropping out.

Wouldn't a game like that be declared no action (or whatever the term)?

edit to add: found this dealing with Duke's withdrawal from the conferencetournament

After Duke pulled out, the DraftKings, FanDuel and BetMGM sportsbooks announced they would refund all futures bets on the Blue Devils to win the ACC tournament. Chris Andrews, sportsbook director at the South Point Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas, told a Twitter user Thursday that Duke’s departure means their ACC tournament futures bets would be graded as a loss.

It all depends on the books rules. If you bet the actual stand alone game it would be a void. If you made a future bet on them to win the conference tournament of NCAA tournament it is likely a loss.

Any books that refund a futures ticket on a bet like this would be doing so for marketing purposes only.

Michigan coming back down to earth now, three losses in their last five games isn't a fluke. It'll be curious to see which version of them shows up in the tournament.

B1G refs are terrible. Iowa got mugged by Illinois, which is the usual happening. Illinois is really good, but Im not sure they survive tight reffing.

Duke isn't getting in. They were 13-11, no good OOC wins, lost to MSU who stinks, best win was over UVA by 1 point. Other than being named Duke the resume isn't there.

fwiw, Lunardi had them as 5th team out as of this morning (i.e. pre-Saturday games)

Behind Col State, Memphis, Ole Miss, Boise
Ahead of Seton Hall, Xavier, St Johns

NCAA "NET" ranking had them 50th as of this morning (pre-Sat games)
That's ahead of Boise, Col State,Memphis, Ole Miss

I've been to three county fairs, two pig-stickins and a goat roping but I ain't seen much that's more unlikely than Georgia Tech winning the ACC basketball tournament.

But in a full fledged goat rodeo of a year, it almost makes sense.

Who knows. I thought OSU had fallen apart, but now they're making quite a run in the Big Ten tourny.

Saw an interview with Lunardi talking about Duke a couple of games back, and he basically said there were only a few teams between them and the field but they still weren't even really in the conversation and had to do a lot to get in. In essence the point was they were in a scrum of teams that hadn't distinguished themselves either. And then there are always those few surprises in the conference tournaments that bump teams that are 'just in' to 'just out' because now you have to make a spot for an extra school.

On the one hand, I'm not even the slightest convinced that there's ANY team in the ACC this year that's particularly good.

On the other hand, I'm not sure what the committee was smoking.

GT finished with a better record than Clemson, finished ahead of Clemson in the ACC, beat Clemson head to head in the ACC tournament, won the conference tournament, AND GT was #38 in the new "NET" rankings that replaced RPI vs Clemson being #41.

Naturally, GT is a #9 seed ... and Clemson is a #7 seed.

Umm ....

Not only is Ga Tech a 9 seed, but they play an 8 seed in UIC that a lot of metrics have a top 15-20 team.

I was slightly disappointed in the region Iowa landed. I was hoping to get in with Baylor.

But a 2 seed is really exciting. I cant wait for this to begin. Lots of good 1st round games out there.

From that list you posted Houston was the lowest ranked #2 seed so why aren't they in Gonzaga's bracket? Strange. No geography to worry about either.

Without getting toooooo deep into figuring it out, probably has something to do with the requirement to avoid breaking the first principle of the S-Curve: "Each of the top four teams selected from a conference shall be placed in different regions if they are seeded on the first four lines"

That meant they had to move Michigan around to avoid Illinois, and moving them around others had to move as well.

I think this year's tournament with all the COVID-19 chaos this season will be the craziest ever-most upsets, more "weaker" conferences having teams move on to deep in the tournament.
