Battlefield 1942
Anyone played/playing this game? I bought it on e-bay for $26.00 ($49.99 @ EB) and I've d/l the demo and it's a pretty kick ass game. Just wondering if any of you play it??
Also - I just bought a new computer and I added a 128 MB GFORCE vidoe card and all I have to say is WOW. What a difference a good video card makes...

I would like to get a little clan with people who play this game online. Nothing like SkyDog flying the plane while I'm in a gunner role

Yes, I've played, I think it needs a clan to enjoy because most people playing are inept when it comes to team oriented play.
If we got a clan together I'd play more often, and I'd invest into the addon.

I haven't played an online game regularly in a few years, but I've been itching to get back into one (UT was the last game I played). If you could buy and play only one online game, would this be it. If not, what would it be?

If you like deathmatches then this game is not for you...stick to UT. If you want team oriented play, then yes, this is it, but you need to find a solid server one void of teamkillers, lone wolves, and cheaters (very hard to do), you can also try to join a clan but it is hard to do (prepare for tryouts). I like the game, it is beatiful to play, you can use any vehicle, ships, armor, planes, but you need to prepare yourself for alot of players who disregard etiquette, which can be frustrating... try imagining this...I was playing one of the desert levels...as an ally...half my team stayed on the runway fighting for two planes!!! Everyone else was trying to get the flags but we were getting boxed in by armor...very frustrating... I like the idea of an FOF clan, at least some people would communicate with a gameplan... The addon is coming Feb 2nd, it has the entire Italian invasion on it, better graphics and new weapons and nationalities (you can play the French or Italians, there's a hard choice). |

It really sounds compelling although I'm concerned about the aircraft "hogging" you are referring to. Are aircrafts that much better? Also, what about cheaters? I want to avoid them as much as possible.
With 32 players per side, how large would a clan need to be? Can you play games with fewer human players? What other online games would you recommend? I've never played a MMORPG before, but I'm both a fantasy and sci-fi buff, and RPGs are one of my favorite genres. I like to think of myself as a hardcore game with little time (think 1-2 hours per night). Furthermore, I tend to jump around from game to game- I don't see myself playing the same game for more than a few months. |

Aircraft is just a different part of the game, tanks are plentiful on some maps, some they're rare, air planes are rare altogether, some of the Pacific maps have you take flight from carriers, which is very cool, or man a battleship and bombard shore positions or ships. Cheaters are unfortunately part of any online game, if you find one, chances are its best to find another server. Patches will come out often to combat cheaters, but I've had to deal with them since counterstrike. You can play with fewer players, clans usually play against other clans in tournaments, but I've yet to be a part of that, clans also are guys/gals you can rely on in a match game. You can have matches that consist of 4 on each side to 32 on each side. If I really get frustrated I'll fire up a single player game and face the 'bots. There is conquest, capture the flag, coop against the computer, and deathmatch (very rare do I see this, I mean the whole point of the game is team action) The bonus is that the company that built the game believes that you shouldn't have to pay for patches (via addon packs), they've stated they'll upgrade free of cost with online patches. I wouldn't recommend any MMORPG if hop games. You have to pay to play online after shelling out for the game itself, it's not worth it if you aren't going to stick with it. If you like shooter games, stick to Unreal Tournament, or download CounterStrike if you own HalfLife. |

I go in waves playing this game alot and then not playing at all for stretches of time. It is a very good game that can be frustrating by the people who play it.
As for aircraft, bah! Actually having a good pilot on your side is fantastic. I just don't enjoy flying them. GIVE ME ARTILLERY OR GIVE ME DEATH!!! I enjoy playing a scout and spotting for artillery alot as well. What really sucks is that so few people use the stuff on most servers. There is nothing like pinning the poor bastards down and just blasting them from across the map. Maybe I feel this way because I am just not good enough to actually play with a foot soldier. Oh well, fantastic game though.

If enough of us get together and play this game it could be an outstanding game. I see to many people (moreless everyone) playing for them and not as a team. Also, if we had enough for a full game that would take away from those damn cheater
I love this game. I love the fact that you can fly a plane, captain (or say) a sub/destroyer, drive a jeep, man a tank, ect. ect... I just feel it would much much cooler of a game with 10 or so people on this board (and other friends) and create a private server so none of those damn cheaters could get in!!

I tried the demo out last night, and the game seems fun but very much an arcade experience. Is it just me or do the graphics look "cartoonish"? And speaking of cartoonish, the weapons don't seem to respond "realistically". I guess I've played too much OFP and GR lately...

Yeah its cartoony, but it is fast paced, and it can be enjoyable, you just have to find the right players...

It's not bad, but it's only to get you into the swing of things...of course you won't have to worry about plane-camping or the like...you can learn how to use each weapon, but there is no interaction with the 'bots they do what they're supposed to do. Just be sure you have a system that can handle multiple bots, I have heard of massive slowdown because of too many bots, each one eats up alot of the computer memory... You can familiarize yourself with the weapons, maps, and vehicles...and it's a nice change of pace if you get frustrated with internet play for a bit...but nothing is like the real thing. |

I've had the game since it was released and it is great. I only have a 56k Modem...so I just stick to LAN games. Great fun.

Well, my quest for an online game has ended- at least temporarily. I downloaded demos of both Battlefield 1942 and Earth & Beyond (actually a fully functional 5 day trial). Yes, I know they are vastly different games, but I didn't really know what I craved. After a week of play, I have decided to buy Battlefield 1942. And what a splendid game it is: immersive, tactical, and cooperative (at least in theory). Now, if players truly worked as a team, the experience would be perfect...

The addon comes out this tuesday and it is supposed to resolve many of the issues.
Btw, if you do play the game, I'm Qwikshot, just like I am here...be nice to know if I have any teammates that I could rely on.
