R.I.P. Dave Brubeck

Time Out was one of the first jazz albums that finally clicked for me.

Maybe the first song to really offer contemporary jazz in an odd time structure.

Pioneering in the use of time signature and counterpoint (with his saxophonist, Paul Desmond, who deserves credit for penning Take Five) in jazz...

Time Out was the first jazz album to sell 1 million (and 2 million) copies, and the Take Five single put jazz on the pop charts for perhaps the first time since WWII. Kind of paved the way for a lot of the greats of the early 60s...

Most of all, I love how chord-centric his playing is. He was basically my paragon as a jazz pianist.

The hook in Take Five might be the best one ever put into music.

I saw the headline on Yahoo.....

'Jazz Hall of Famer Dave Brubeck dies'

My first thought was 'Man, he must have played for the Utah Jazz a LONG time ago'.

Considering that Take Five was written by the quartet's saxophonist, Paul Desmond, to showcase the talents of the drummer, Lou Morello, but is now remembered for the rhythm piano riff, I think it's pretty clear that these guys had something great going.

Kinda cool tonight, my son's high school band concert included their 5 pc jazz band & they opened with Take Five in tribute to Brubeck.
