NLL 2014 - Official Season Thread/Dynasty

Going to try to do a dynasty thread for the 2014 NLL season which starts in a couple weeks. It will be an "official" regular season thread and dynasty rolled into one.

I have season tickets to the Wings and will post my experiences and try to post as many pictures as possible from those games as well. In addition to the 9 home games I should be getting a season ticket reward of a bus trip to an away game. Haven't heard those details yet, however.

Throughout the weekend I will start to break down the teams prior to the season.

In addition, I would love to convince someone from FOFC who is close to one of the teams to attend a game.

Highlights
Week 1 Schedule

Standings After Week 1

Changes for 2014

New for 2014, and there are a few things.

Minnesota has been moved from the West to the East (not sure why this move was made, unless there is potential 2015 expansion out west for another team).

A big change is how the playoffs will work. Previously the league had 8 teams make the playoffs, with only one team not making it. If the 5th place team in the West had a better record than the 4th place team in the East that team would crossover and make the playoffs in the East. That is no more, thankfully.

Now the top 3 teams in each conference make the playoffs. The 2nd and 4rd place teams will play one game at the site of the 2nd place team in the first round with the top seed getting a bye. The winner of each of those games will move to the conference finals. That is now a 2 game series in which the 1st game is played at the site of the lower placed team and the 2nd game is played at the site of the conference leader. If they split those games there will be a break after the 2nd game and then a 10 minute "game" will follow. If no winner after that "game" it moves into sudden death. The league championship will follow the same format with the remaining team with the best record hosting that 2nd game.

Another change is upping the number of games from 16 to 18.

The league also went through negotiating a new CBA this offseason. (I will wait another week to post team previews as teams are still signing and resigning players)

2013 Results - 4th in the East and last overall. Missed the playoffs as Minnesota earned the crossover playoff spot.

2014 Prediction - Their star John Tavares (the uncle of the Islanders' Tavares) and league's all time leading scorer is yet another year older (is now 45) and is slowing down. They had one of the worst defensive teams in the league last season and are one of the least disciplined teams. They hope a change in coaching staff will help. My prediction is they will miss the post season again as the number of playoff teams have been cut by 2.

Players to Watch
#3 Billy Dee Williams (Defense) - Will his loss of discipline continue to hurt the team?

#9 Mark Steenhuis (Forward) - Once a feared scorer in his early days but has been playing transition defense the past several seasons. He plays like a spazz and will blow up and coast his team dearly at the worst possible times. Hated by many outside of Buffalo.

#11 John Tavares (Forward) - League's all time leading scorer. At 45 how much does he have left. He can still shoot but he doesn't create his own space anymore.

#17 Ryan Benesch (Forward) - Nice addition to the team but has had moments where he seems to be in cruise control.

#23 Steve Priolo (Defense) - Can be a bruiser and could be an asset if the new coaching staff turns his game around to keep him from going for the borderline kill shots.

#38 Kurtis Wagar (Goalie) - Will split time and is nothing flashy.

#42 Rory Smith (Defense) - Adding Rory will not help the team become a more disciplined team. One of the cheap shot artists in the league that can play solid defense when he doesn't get distracted by wanting to go after someone.

#44 Anthony Cosmo (Goalie) - The biggest punk keeper in the league. Will cheap shot anyone when the ref isn't looking and will blow up if goals are scored on him quickly. Once thought to have the talent to be something but gets in his own way.

#92 Dhane Smith (Transition) - A youngster that has promise. Quick hands and speed.

2013 Results - Let a solid regular season go to waste in the playoffs.

2014 Prediction - Will challenge for the top seed in the West.

Players to Watch
#4 Geoff Snider (Transition) - One of the top faceoff specialists in the league. Once known as the top tough guy in the league and we loved him in Philly, though he would let himself get carried away sometimes and it would hurt the team.

#15 Shawn Evans (Forward) - You never know what you will get with him. Could be a highlight real hit, goal or cheap shot/blow up.

#36 Daryl Veltman (Forward) - Can be a vacuum for loose balls. Plays a solid all around game.

#71 Scott Ranger (Forward) - Good outdoor player that has shown promise indoors at times.

#77 Jeff Shattler (Forward) - All star forward that will continue to produce.

2013 Results - Just made it into the playoffs in the West after a late surge. Disappointing season.

2014 Prediction - May struggle to make the playoffs this season. Should be able to score but will allow a lot of goals as well, too many. Could be the odd team out in the West.

Players to Watch
#16 Adam Jones (Forward) - Very good young player that should provide good offensive support for the team as the secondary option.

#24 John Grant Jr. (Forward) - Constant all-star, though won't win any awards for class. Great skill player that may be good for at least one highlight goal each game. Has Crosby-itus as he feels that anything that touches him should be a penalty.

#26 Drew Westervelt (Forward) - Will be missed in Philly. A big player that has a habit of not always playing to his size but seems to want to play like a small player as he won't go make space for himself. Goes through frustrating times where he goes through the motions if things aren't going well but can be very clutch when needed.

#41 Bob Snider (Defense) - A top faceoff specialist, brother of Geoff Snider who plays in Calgary. Has developed a decent defensive game.

2013 Results - Made the playoffs thanks to a young and talented roster.

2014 Prediction - Could be the team to beat if their youngsters take the next step. If they keep this team together they could be really good for several years.

Players to Watch
#4 Kyle Rubisch (Defense) - Good size and strength, plays very good man up defense.

#6 John Lintz (Defense) - Another one of their towers inside which make life very tough for opposing offenses.

#27 Dane Stevens (Forward) - Good all around player that will give them plenty of depth on the ball.

#42 Mark Matthews (Forward) - Last years rookie of the year and when I saw him playing for Denver in his junior year I was wishing for a way that the Wings could somehow get that draft pick; sadly it wasn't to be. He is a beast.

2013 Results - Made the playoffs as the cross-over to the East. Young and hungry.

2014 Predictions - Could make the playoffs in the East (as they have been moved to the East). Hard to judge as they have no individual stars that stand out to me but they seem to play very well together.

Players to Watch
#12 Cameron Flint (Transition) - Rookie out of Denver, played with Mark Matthews in 2012. Talented but will he make the jump to indoor as well as Matthews? I didn't see it when I saw him play outdoor like I did with Matthews.

#18 Logan Schuss (Forward) - Rookie out of Ohio State. Hard to predict the transition to indoor.

#24 Jordan MacIntosh (Transition) - Second year player that has a lot of promise.

#45 Jason Noble (Transition) - Rookie from Cornell, I liked a different Cornell player last year when I saw them playing (more on that player later).

2013 Results - Made the playoffs but lost a close 1st round game to the eventual champions.

2014 Predictions - Sadly they may struggle to compete. Key loss of Westervelt and have not signed their goalie from last season. Additionally they have lost a lot of players due to them being on Team USA for the outdoor championships this year and they are skipping the indoor season because of it. Probably the best field team in the NLL, sadly this isn't a field league.

Players to Watch
#21 Kevin Crowley (Forward) - The leading scorer entering his 3rd season. He can be an enigma as he can either dominate with 4-5 goals or go silent for long stretches. Needs someone else to give him space but has a laser sighted shot when on.

#44 Jordan Hall (Forward) - Good addition to the team last season who is a good compliment to Crowley.

#51 Evan Kirk (Goalie) - An unknown as he will be taking over for Brandon Miller who did not sign. Has big shoes to fill.

#17 Brodie Merrill (Transition) - Team captain and one of the top transition players in the league.

#17 Kevin Ross (Forward) - Provides a good power forward option for the team.

2013 Results - For the second straight year they finished 2nd in the East and then went on to win the championship.

2014 Prediction - I still don't know how they do it. They seem to get hot at just the right time. I think their streak ends at two straight titles and they will fall in the first round of the playoffs.

Players to Watch
#1 Joe Walters (Forward) - Solid all-around player. Always in the right place at the right time.

#2 Paul Dawson (Defense) - Big defender that can get caught flat footed, though you don't want to get hit by him.

#6 Dan Dawson (Forward) - One of the top players in the league but known more for setting up the offense than being the one scoring the goals. Always at or near the top of the assist leaders.

#48 Matt Vinc (Goalie) - One of the top goalies in the league.

#88 Cody Jamieson (Forward) - May be a punk but is a punk that scores.

#93 Johnny Powless (Forward) - Just fits this team, right place at the right time kind of player.

2013 Results - Top team in the East in the regular season again but failed to advance in the playoffs again.

2014 Predictions - Should contend for the top spot in the East again.

Players to Watch
#7 Colin Doyle (Forward) - Solid vet who can score but age is catching up to him.

#13 Garrett Billings (Forward) - One of the top scorers in the league, no reason for that to change in just his 4th season.

#17 Stephen LeBlanc (Forward) - Solid player that is very consistent.

#66 Nick Rose (Goalie) - One of the better goalies in the league.

2013 Results - Lost the championship game.

2014 Predictions - The top of the West will be a rough battle this season. Will be in the post season.

Players to Watch
#00 Tyler Richards (Goalie) - Solid keeper that should continue to improve.

#9 Alex Gajic (Forward) - Teams up with his brother to be a very deadly duo.

#10 Rhys Duch (Forward) - Should be at or near the top of the goal leaders again.

#15 Ilija Gajic (Transition) - See Alex...

#42 Lewis Ratcliff (Forward) - Always an exciting player to watch. May not be the most skilled but will come up with the big plays in spectacular fashion.

Will be following along. I've yet to hit a Rush game but have heard a ton about Matthews. I think GSP is in town for the home opener so those tickets are likely long gone, but I'm hoping to make a game or two this season.

Excellent. That is one of my goals, to get someone, somewhere, who hasn't gone to a game to see one.

Yes, GSP will be at their opener (I believe it is their opener).

Offering a week 1 contest. Anyone that places their week 1 score predictions in this thread will be entered. The winner will be the one that has the most correct and is closest in score prediction.

For those unfamiliar with the league the scores are usually anywhere from 10-15 for a team in a game. A more defensive game may be 10-8 or so and once in a while there are some games where a team scores 20.

Quote:
12/28 (7:30 PM EST) - Philadelphia Wings (0-0) @ Buffalo Bandits (0-0)

A couple early updates.

Philly 9 Buffalo 7 at the half, not a lot of defense and the refs are calling anything (think just looking at a player is a penalty)

Rochester 4 Minnesota 2 at the half (haven't been watching but obviously a defensive battle so far)

Week 1 Recap

Philadelphia Wings @ Buffalo Bandits
Attendance: 16,347

Philadelphia played a solid all-around game and never trailed. Despite being short handed 3 times in the 1st quarter and not having any power play time of their own they still led 4-3 after the 1st.

They scored 5 of the 1st 6 goals in the second to take a 9-4 lead but then had about a 4 minute lapse where they allowed 3 goals and led 9-7 at the half.

By the end of the 3rd they led 13-9 and then scored the 1st 3 in the 4th to pull out to a 16-9 lead. Buffalo climbed back to 16-12 and they exchanged a goal afterwards for the final.

The Wings offense looks to have gelled well but their defense has a lot of room for improvement. Buffalo continues to come unwound when things don't go their way and will be in for a long season if they can't turn that around.

For the Wings Jordan Hall led the team with 5 goals (and added 2 assists). Kyle Buchanan led the team with 8 points (3 goals and 5 assists). Kevin Ross had 3 goals and 2 assists. Ryan Ward, a late roster addition, added a team high 6 assists. Rookie Garrett Thul scored his first career goal and used his size (including getting into a fight later in the game) and could become a fan favorite (that guy is a beast 6'4", 245).

For Buffalo Dhane Smith had 3 goals and 2 assists to lead the team. John Tavares looked like a shell of his former self but did have 3 assists (may have stayed one season too long).

Minnesota Swarm @ Rochester Knighthawks
Attendance: 6,238

Not the most exciting game until the end. Rochester led 2-0 after the first quarter, could hear the sounds of fans falling asleep it seemed (had Knighthawk fans turning on the Wings game early on, that is saying something).

Each team scored twice in the 2nd and at the half Rochester would lead 4-2.

Rochester would get shut down in the 3rd as Minnesota would score 3 times and take a 5-4 lead after the 3rd quarter.

Rochester would tie the game early in the 4th but Minnesota would take a 6-5 lead with just under 10 minutes remaining. From there Rochester would clamp down and score the final 3 goals of the game for the 8-6 victory.

For Minnesota, only Tyler Hass would score more than a single goal, and he only had 2. Callum Crawford led the team with 3 points (1 goal and 2 assists).

For Rochester Dan Dawson would lead the team with 6 points (2 goals and 4 assists). Joel McCready would add 5 points (2 goals and 3 assists). Matt Vinc would face 51 shots and only allow 6.

Edmonton Rush @ Colorado Mammoth
Attendance: 15,596

Colorado would be looking for the upset early and storm out to a 4-1 lead but Edmonton would score the final goal of the 1st to narrow the gap to 4-2 after 15 minutes of play.

Edmonton would crank up the offense in the second and outscored Colorado 6-2 in that quarter to take an 8-6 lead at the half.

They would continue their momentum as they would score the first 3 of the 3rd to take a commanding 11-6 lead before Colorado would score a late goal to make it 11-7 after three quarters.

The final quarter would see Colorado get the crowd back into the game as they would score the first three goals to make it 11-10 with just under 4 minutes left to play. With about a minute and a half left Edmonton would extend the lead to 12-10 and then score another just about 30 seconds later (with led than a minute to go) for the eventual final of 13-10.

For Edmonton Curtis Knight had 3 goals and 3 assists. Zack Greer would score a hat trick as well with 3 goals and 2 assists. Cory Conway added 2 goals and 3 assists. Mark Matthews would be held without a goal and had 3 assists (frightening if they can win without getting a lot of contribution from him).

For Colorado Adam Jones had 4 goals and 2 assists to lead the team. John Grant Jr. would get a hat trick with 3 goals and add 1 assist.

Week 2 Results

Calgary Roughnecks @ Toronto Rock
Attendance: 11,120

Toronto jumped all over Calgary early and often as they scored 7 times in the opening quarter and led 7-3 after 15 minutes of play. Six different players scored for Toronto in the quarter as they spread the ball around. Early on it is looking like a 20+ goal night for Toronto.

Calgary would score first in the 2nd quarter to get back to within 3 but Toronto would score the final two goals of the quarter to take a 9-4 lead into the half.

After Toronto would score first to make the score 10-4 Jeff Shattler would score two goals in a little over a minute to bring Calgary back to 10-6 with just under 10 minutes left in the 3rd. Toronto would get those goals back by the end of the 3rd and would lead 12-6 after the third.

Calgary would try to fight back in the 4th as they would score 5 of the first 7 goals in the quarter to get back to 14-11 with just over 3 minutes remaining. That is as close as they could make it as Toronto would score twice in the final two minutes for the 16-11 final.

For Calgary Jeff Shattler would lead the team with 4 goals and add 2 assists. Shawn Evans would score one time but led the team with 7 assists for a team high 8 points. Daryl Veltman would add a goal and 3 assists.

For Toronto Stephen LeBlanc would score a game high of 5 goals and also assisted on 2 other goals. Barrett Billings scored just 1 goal but had a game high 9 assists for a game high 10 points. Rob Hellyer would have a hat trick with 3 goals.

Vancouver Stealth @ Colorado Mammoth
Attendance: 15,101

Drew Westervelt would open the scoring with 2 goals 47 seconds apart to give Colorado a 2-0 lead. Vancouver would score just 13 seconds after his second goal to make it 2-1 but Colorado would add another goal midway through the quarter and they lead 3-1 after the first quarter.

Vancouver would dominate the 2nd quarter, on the scoreboard, as they would score 5 of the 6 goals in that quarter and take a lead going into the half 6-4.

The teams would split the next 6 goals scored and Vancouver would lead 9-7 with under 2 minutes left in the 3rd. Colorado would respond with 3 goals in the last 2 minutes of the quarter which were scored in a 30 second window. In a blink Colorado takes a 10-9 lead after three quarters of play and the crowd, which was already into the game, is now in a fever pitch.

Vancouver would tie the game a little over 6 minutes into the final quarter but 2 minutes later Drew Westervelt would score to give Colorado an 11-10 lead. Just over one minute later Vancouver would tie the game at 11 with 5:53 left in the game. Just over a minute later Adam Jones would strike as he scored twice in just over a 30 second time period to give Colorado a 13-11 lead with 4:13 left in the game. Vancouver tighten the game with 1:57 left at 13-12 and the last two minutes were nail biting time for the home crowd but Colorado would hold off Vancouver for the 13-12 victory.

Rhys Duch would lead Vancouver with 4 goals and added 2 assists. Tyler Digby also had a hat trick with 3 games and also added 3 assists. Alex Gajic led the team with 7 assists and added a goal for a game high 8 points.

For Colorado Adam Jones, Sean Pollock and Drew Westervelt would each score three goals for hat tricks; they had 1, 0 and 2 assists respectively. John Grant Jr. had just 1 goal but added 4 assists.

I'll be at the Sunday home opener and will find a way to post pictures from that one after the weekly recap next week.

This will be the first big weekend of games for the season. With 6 games, only the very next weekend will have more games with 7 that weekend.

Will start updating the weekly results later tonight. Also, as a heads up. I will do a contest again for next week's games. Still trying to figure out the prize for the winner though but may make it a sports bet in Vegas (where I go that following week for a few days for work).

Week 3 Results

Toronto Rock @ Buffalo Bandits
Attendance: 11,404

Toronto opened up with a 4-0 1st quarter and it is looking like they are going to cruise to a victory. 4 different players scored for Toronto in the 1st.

The teams alternated goals in the 2nd and each scored twice to take the game to halftime with Toronto up 6-2 and still seem to be in control.

Buffalo would put up a 4-0 quarter of their own in the 3rd as 4 different players would score for them and the game would be tied 6-6 heading into the final quarter of play.

Buffalo would score twice in the opening 1:17 of the 4th to take an 8-6 lead but over the next 2 minutes Toronto would score twice to tie the game at 8-8. About mid way through the final quarter Buffalo would score 2 goals in exactly a minute to take a 10-8 lead but Toronto would answer just 19 seconds later to narrow the gap to 10-9. Buffalo would score the next two goals to extend the lead to 12-9 with just over a minute remaining. Toronto scored a goal in the final minute for the final 12-10 as Buffalo would pick up their first victory of the season.

For Toronto Stephen LeBlanc and Colin Doyle would each score 3 goals. Garrett Billings would not score but had 4 assists and Josh Sanderson would also not score but added 5 assists.

For Buffalo newcomer Ryan Benesch would score 3 goals and had 2 assists. James Rooney would score 1 goal and had 3 assist and Dhane Smith would not score bat had 4 assists.

Colorado Mammoth @ Calgary Roughnecks
Attendance: 11,232

Colorado would pick up 2 goals in the first 5 minutes of the game to take a 2-0 lead but Calgary would answer back with goals from Shattler and Snider and the game would be tied 2-2 after the first quarter.

The second quarter would be a shooting gallery with teams going on runs. Calgary would start with the first two of the quarter in the first 24 seconds of the quarter to take a 4-2 lead. In the next two minutes Colorado would score 3 to take a 5-4 lead. Calgary would score the next 5 with Shattler and Dobbie each scoring two to take a 9-5 lead. Colorado would stop the momentum with 2 goals in the final 4 minutes of the quarter to narrow the game to 9-7 as the game heads to the half.

In the 3rd goals would be a premium as Calgary's Dane Dobbie would score the only 2 goals of the quarter as Calgary leads 11-7 as they head into the final quarter of play.

Each team would score twice as Calgary would lead 13-9 with under 2 and a half minutes to play. Adam Jones would score a power play goal for Colorado to make it 13-10 with 1:31 left to play. Jordan McBride would score for Colorado with 31 seconds remaining to make it 13-11 but they is where the scoring would end as Calgary wins 13-11.

For Colorado Sean Pollock scored 3 goals and added an assist. John Grant Jr. scored 2 goals ad had 4 assists while Drew Westervelt scored 2 and had 3 assists.

For Calgary Dane Dobbie had 4 goals and 2 assists while Jeff Shattler had 4 goals and 1 assist. Geoff Snider had a hat trick with 3 goals and 1 assist. Only 2 Calgary players (non keepers) did not score a single point.

Philadelphia Wings @ Rochester Knighthawks
Attendance: 6,488

The first quarter looked promising as the game would see both teams score 3 and be tied 3-3 after the first 15 minutes.

The second quarter was a disgrace for Philadelphia as they played poor defense and their offense was equally poor. Rochester scored 6 times in the quarter to lead 9-3 at the half.

In the 3rd quarter Rochester would score first with just under 11 minutes remaining to make it 10-3. The Wings began to wake up as they scored the final 4 goals of the quarter, including 3 in just over a minute with under 4 minutes left. Heading into the final quarter Rochester leads 10-7.

The Wings would score in the opening minute of the quarter to make it 10-8 and about 6 minutes in to make it 10-9 and seemed to have the momentum. Rochester would wake up and answer with 2 goals to make it 12-9 and added a goal in the final minute on the Wings backup goalie for the 13-9 final. The starter was shaken up running back onto the field and diving for a save after he was pulled for an extra attacker so the backup is 0 for 1 in save opportunities.

Kyle Buchanan led the way for the Wings with 2 goals and 4 assists.

Dan Dawson had a hat trick with 3 goals and 3 assists for Rochester. Craig Point had 3 goals and 2 assists. Cody Jamieson would lead all scorers with 2 goals and 6 assists.

Colorado Mammoth @ Edmonton Rush
Attendance: 7,950

With GSP in attendance for Edmonton's home opener they put a major offensive display for their guest. Edmonton jumped out to a 6-0 lead before Colorado answered for a 6-1 score by the end of the 1st quarter. It seemed the Colorado was playing with an empty net as Edmonton scored on 6 of their 7 shots in the quarter.

More of the same in the second as Edmonton scored the 1st 3 with Colorado answering with 1. Edmonton led 9-2 going into the half. The game was getting out of control and it seems that Colorado is ready for the trip home.

One thing would change in the third quarter, Colorado would score their goal 1st before Edmonton would answer with 5 of their own and the game is over going into the 4th as Edmonton leads 14-3.

Each team would score 3 times in a meaningless 4th as Edmonton wins 17-6.

For Colorado Drew Westervelt scored 3 goals and had 1 assist. Adam Jones had 2 goals and 3 assists.

For Edmonton Mark Matthews would shine with 5 goals and 5 assists for a game high 10 points. Zack Greer also scored 5 goals and had 1 assist. Jarrett Davis had a hat trick with 3 goals and added 4 assists.

Minnesota Swarm @ Vancouver Stealth
Attendance: 5,031

Vancouver would score 3 of the 4 goals in the 1st and led 3-1 after the first 15 minutes of play as Rhys Duch would score the first two goals of the game.

Minnesota would get a little back as they scored 2 of the 3 goals in the 2nd as Vancouver would lead 4-3 at the half in a defensive battle.

In the 3rd Vancouver scored 2 of the 3 goals and extend their lead to 6-4 after the third quarter.

Vancouver scored the first two goals of the 4th to take an 8-4 lead with 3:27 remaining in the game. With 2:22 left Minnesota would answer to make it 8-5 but that is where the scoring stopped as Vancouver wins 8-5.

For Minnesota only Kiel Matisz scored more than one as he had 2 goals and 1 assist.

For Vancouver only Rhys Duch scored more than one as he had 2 goals and 1 assist. Keeper Tyler Richards is the player of the game as he saved 45 of the 50 shots he faced.

Buffalo Bandits @ Philadelphia Wings
Attendance: 7,365

The 1st quarter started out with Buffalo taking a 1-0 lead on a power play goal but the Wings scored 3 of the next 4 and led 3-2 at the end of the 1st quarter.

After teams would trade goals to make it 4-3 the Wings would go into a second straight 2nd quarter coma as Buffalo scored the final 5 goals of the quarter to lead 8-4 at the half. The place was quite silent and the new in house guy (who is supposed to be there just for the marketing promotions) is annoying the hell out of everyone with his open mic during the game; we are not there to listen to that idiot.

A power play by Buffalo in the 3rd extends their lead to 9-4. The Wings would answer to get to 9-5 but just 2 minutes later Buffalo scored to make it 10-5 with a little over 5 minutes left in the 3rd. Ryan Ward would score twice for the Wings to get to within 10-7 after three quarters of play.

The Wings would get a first career goal from John Ranagan and Ryan Ward would score another as they would get to within 1 goal at 10-9 with 8:31 remaining in the game. Unfortunately just 11 seconds later they let John Tavares wide open for a shot (the old guy can shoot when given space) and he gave Buffalo an 11-9 lead. The Wings would answer back with 2 more goals as Ryan Ward scored his 4th goal of the day with 4:01 left to tie the game 11-11. Neither team would break the tie and the game heads to overtime.

Just 55 seconds into overtime the play was like slow motion for me as the Wings again gave Tavares plenty of space to shoot and as I was yelling, NO, don't give him space to shoot... in the middle of that sentence he buried the shot for the game winner. Buffalo spoils the Wings home opener 12-11.

John Tavares put up numbers like it was several years ago as he had 5 goals and 2 assists for Buffalo. Dhane Smith had 3 goals and 6 assists while Ryan Benesch had 1 goal and 4 assists.

For Philadelphia Ryan Ward had 4 goals and 1 assist. Kevin Crowley and Jordan Hall each had 4 assists (with Crowley also having 1 goal).

Will work on catching up later today/tomorrow. The Vegas trip pretty much kept that from happening.

Week 4 Results

Calgary Roughnecks @ Edmonton Rush
Attendance: 7184

Calgary opened the scoring about 3 minutes in to take a 1-0 lead on a goal by Dane Dobbie. That is where their hope ended as Mark Matthews tied the game with just over 8 minutes left in the quarter and Edmonton added a short handed goal and a power play goal to take a 3-1 lead at the end of the 1st quarter.

In the first 2 and a half minutes of the second Edmonton scored 2 more to extend the lead to 5-1. Calgary answered at the 3:01 mark on a goal by Scott Ranger but Edmonton would score the next 3 before Calgary scored to 'cut' the lead to 8-3 heading into the half.

The third quarter was a shooting gallery as Edmonton would score 4 of the first 5 goals to extend their lead to 12-4. Calgary would respond as they scored 4 goals in a 3 minute span to give them hope at 12-8 but an Edmonton shorthanded goal in the final minute of the quarter gives them a 13-8 lead heading into the final 15 minutes of play.

Mark Matthews would score on a penalty shot just 15 seconds into the 4th quarter and the Rush would add another just over 3 minutes in. Defense would rule the remainder of the final quarter as no one would find the net for the rest of the game. Edmonton would win easily 15-8.

For Calgary Dane Dobbie would score 3 goals and added an assist while Scott Ranger would score 2 goals of his own.

For Edmonton Mark Matthews would lead the way with 4 goals and 3 assists. Curtis Knight would also score 4 goals and added 1 assist. Chris Corbeil would score 5 points of his own with a hat trick and 2 assists.

Colorado Mammoth @ Vancouver Stealth
Attendance: 2,981

Colorado would start off the game well with the 4 of the first 5 goals to take a 4-1 lead before Vancouver would score the final 2 (with the last one being with just 1 second left in the quarter) to narrow the gap to 4-3.

In the second quarter the teams would alternate goals and each score twice to send the game to the half with Colorado up 6-5.

In a back and forth third quarter Colorado would score first and last and outscore the Stealth 4-3 in the quarter to extend their lead to 10-8 after three quarters of play.

Vancouver would score twice in the first 2:18 of the final quarter to tie the game 10-10. Colorado would take an 11-10 lead with Vancouver tying the game at 11. That pattern would follow until the Stealth tie the game at 13 in the final minute of play. The game would head to overtime tied 13-13.

Just 2:18 into overtime Lewis Ratcliff would score the winner for Vancouver as a very sparse crowd would be treated to a thriller.

Sean Pollock, John Grant Jr. and Drew Westervelt all had hat tricks for Colorado. Pollock also had 5 assists, Grant Jr. had 3 and Westervelt had 4 as they combined for 9 goals and 12 assists. Add Adam Jones with 2 goals and 4 assists and those 4 players scored 27 points between them.

Vancouver had a little more spread out scoring. Cody Brenner had 3 goals and 3 assists. Tyler Digby had a hat trick and 1 assist. Rhys Duch had 2 goals and 4 assists.

Minnesota Swarm @ Philadelphia Wings
Attendance: 5,164

In front of the second smallest crowd in team history the team actually started out well as they score the first 3 goals of the game to take a 3-0 lead just 3:03 into the game. The Swarm would respond just 40 second later to cut the gap to 3-1. The last 11 minutes of the quarter would see no scoring and the Wings lead 3-1 after the first quarter.

The Wings would see another second quarter collapse as the Swarm would outscore them 6-1 in the second quarter as the crowd would be silent by halftime as we have seen this yet again and they would trail 7-4 at the half.

The Wings would look better in the 3rd as they would score the first two goals to get to within 7-6 with just under half of the quarter remaining. With a little under 5 minutes left in the quarter the Swarm score a power play goal to gain a little breathing room at 8-6 but the Wings would respond as Tracey Kelusky would score his second goal of the quarter, this one while on the power play to get back to within 1 at 8-7. The quarter would end with the Swarm up by a goal.

The Swarm would briefly silence the crowd just 18 seconds into the 4th quarter as rookie Logan Schuss would score to give the Swarm a 9-7 lead. Ryan Ward and rookie Garrett Thul would score for the Wings to tie the game at 9-9 as the small turnout would start to finally really get into the game with just over 7 minutes left in the game. Then things would get a little frustrating as a completely blown goalie interference call (which would be confirmed by the league later in the week that the call was blown) as the Kirk's stick would be checked while he was in the crease which led to a turnover and goal to give the Swam a 10-9 lead with just over 5 minutes left in the game. After a disallowed goal that would have tied it the Swam would score again with 2:54 remaining to lead 11-9. Jordan Hall would score with 1:09 left and the goalie pulled to get the Wings back to 11-10 but they couldn't get the equalizer and would lose another 1 goal game at home after another second quarter collapse (outscored 12-1 in two games at home in the second quarter).

The Swarm had a balanced offense that was well distributed. Jordan MacIntosh would lead the team with 2 goals and 3 assists.

For the Wings Jordan Hall would lead the team with 4 goals and 2 assists. Ryan Ward would score only 1 goal but had a game high 6 assists.

Toronto Rock @ Rochester Knighthawks
Attendance: 8,136

Rochester scored the first two of the quarter to take a 2-0 lead but the Rock would answer with 2 to tie the game 2-2 through the first quarter of the game.

The defending champions got the best of the second quarter as they score 3 of the 4 goals and lead 5-3 in front of their fans. The game is shaping up to be another Rochester snooze fest.

The Knighthawks dominate in the third scoring 4 of 5 and would have a commanding 9-4 lead through three quarters of play.

After the Knighthawks would score to increase their lead to 10-4 the Rock would answer with a 3 goal run to get to within 10-7 with 7:22 remaining in the game. Less than 30 second later the Knighthawks would score to end the run and make it 11-7. Toronto scored 40 seconds later to respond and make it 11-8 with just 6:18 remaining in the game. The Knighthawks would add an empty net goal in the final minute for the 12-8 final.

For Toronto Garrett Billings would lead the team with 4 points (1 goal and 3 assists).

For Rochester Cody Jamieson would score 4 goals and added 1 assist. Dan Dawson would have a game high 7 points with 7 assists.

Vancouver Stealth @ Calgary Roughnecks
Attendance: 8,957

The visiting Stealth would score twice in the first three minutes of the game but Calgary would score the only other 2 goals of the quarter, as Jeff Shattler scored them both, to tie the game 2-2 through the first quarter.

The second quarter would see Calgary take a 1 goal lead which would last until the final 3 minutes of the quarter when the offense would take over and the Stealth would score twice in 20 seconds to take a 4-3 lead but Calgary would score twice in the final 2 minutes to lead the game 5-4 at the half.

The third quarter was all about offense as the teams would split the 10 goals that were scored to have the game going into the 4th quarter with Calgary leading 10-9. 10 different players would score that quarter, believed to be an NLL record.

31 seconds into the final quarter the Stealth tie the game 10-10 but Calgary answered just over 30 seconds later to reclaim the lead at 11-10. 4:43 into the quarter they score again to extend the lead to 12-10 before the Stealth respond with a Rhys Duch goal to get back to 12-11. In an 11 second span Calgary would score twice to take a 3 goal lead at 14-11 with 7:49 remaining in the game. At the 8:18 mark the Stealth would cut the gap to 2 at 14-12 but a Dane Dobbie power play goal with under 4 minutes left would give them the three goal cushion at 15-12 which is where the scoring would end.

For Vancouver Rhys Duch would lead the team with 3 goals and 2 assists.

For Calgary Dane Dobbie would score 5 goals to lead the team and added 1 assist. Shawn Evans would have a game high 9 points with 3 goals and 6 assists. Daryl Veltman would add a hat trick and 11 assist.

Buffalo Bandits @ Colorado Mammoth
Attendance: 14,822

Buffalo would come out flying in an unbelievable 4-0 run leading to a 5-1 lead after the first quarter of the game. That is not the Bandits team that anyone knows.

Colorado would come back a little as they outscore Buffalo 5-3 in the second with Adam Jones and John Grant Jr. each scoring a pair of goals but the Bandits would lead 8-6 at the half.

The third would be a near copy of the 1st as the Bandits score the first 5 on their way to scoring 6 of 7 and taking a commanding 14-7 lead after three quarters of play.

Colorado would score twice in the first 2:33 of the 4th to get back to 14-9 and give their fans a slight glimmer of hope but the Bandits would score the final 2 goals of the game for the 16-9 final.

For Buffalo Steve Priolo and Dhane Smith would each have a hat trick. Ryan Benesch would have a game high 8 points with 1 goal and 7 assists.

For Colorado Adam Jones led the way with 3 goals and 2 assists.

Philadelphia Wings @ Minnesota Swarm
Attendance: 8,213

The Wings came out strong as they scored 4 of the 5 goals in the 1st to lead 4-1 after the opening 15 minutes.

Minnesota would score 1:15 into the second quarter, no doubt giving all other Wings fans the same response that I had... not again. But the team responded well as they would score 4 of the 7 goals in the quarter and led 8-4 at the half.

The teams would split the 4 goals scored in the 3rd and the Wings would lead 10-6 going into the final quarter of the game.

The Wings put the game away in the 4th as they scored 5 times, allowing only 2 as they win convincingly on the road by a 15-8 final. They would lose a player in the process as a blatant late hit after a goal would send Kevin Ross head first into the boards and he will be out for the next few weeks.

For the Wings Jordan Hall would put his exclamation point on a weekend that earned him player of the week honors with 4 goals and 4 assists. Ryan Ward continued to rack up points with 1 goal and 6 assists. Newcomers Tracey Kulusky and Kyle Buchanan would play big roles as Kelusky had 3 goals and 2 assists while Buchanan would have 2 goals and 6 assists.

For the Swarm rookie Logan Schuss would lead the team with 2 goals and 1 assist.

Week 5 Results

Rochester Knighthawks @ Buffalo Bandits
Attendance: 13,339

A defensive first quarter would see only Buffalo's Dhane Smith scoring as the Bandits lead 1-0 after the 1st quarter.

The Bandits would dominate the defending champs in the 2nd and they score 5 of the 7 goals to lead 6-2 at the half.

A shocked NLL fanbase would see the Bandits continue to dominate as they score 4 of 5 in the 3rd to lead 10-3 with just one quarter remaining. When will the real Bandits show back up?

Rochester would score twice to get to 10-5 before Buffalo answers with a goal of their own to lead 11-5 with just 7:27 remaining in the game. The score would remain the same as the clock ticked under 4 minutes to play but the Knighthawks would score 4 goals in just over 2 and a half minutes to get to within 11-9 with 1:20 remaining in the game. It wasn't over yet as the Knighthawks would score with 19 second left to get to 11-10 but could not get the tying goal and Buffalo would hang on for dear life for the 11-10 victory.

For Rochester Joel McCreedy and Cody Jamieson would each score 3 goals.

For Buffalo John Tavares would score 4 goals, including one where he had a fountain of youth moment and made his own shot. Ryan Benesch would have 6 assists.

Colorado Mammoth @ Calgary Roughnecks
Attendance: 9,121

In a tight 1st quarter the Mammoth would score 3 of the 5 to lead 3-2 after 15 minutes of play. The quarter would be physical and see a fight and other scrums, including one between the Snider brothers.

A high flying second quarter would see each team score 5 goals as Colorado's Adam Jones scored 4 times. The game is tight with Colorado leading 8-7 at the half.

A back and forth 3rd quarter would see the game tied 11-11 as they head into the final 15 minutes of play. 7 different players would score in that quarter.

Colorado scored the 1st two goals of the 4th and led 13-11 with 9:56 left in the game. Calgary answered just 12 second later and would tie the gam a minute and a half later. The final half of the quarter would be a defensive battle and the game goes to overtime tied 13-13.

2:09 into overtime John Grant Jr. would score a game winner behind the back as Colorado wins 14-13.
