1985 Offseason Thread (SUNDAY 10pm ET Regular Season Sim)

The new league champs are barely crowned and I am already starting an offseason thread!

Remember the next two weeks the schedule is a bit off as I will be traveling as well as we are taking time off for Thanksgiving.

That would've been great news, say three years ago. Maybe five. Now? That's like "Attention FOOL shoppers, Barry Bonds in Aisle 4."

Tonight we are simming from October 12th until November 4th (first day of free agency). I'll also handle trades that were made (which I mistakingly forgot last night), as well as Awards for last season.

This league feels old to me now.. Pagan and Reyes, two of my guys I brought up as youngsters and didn't just inherit when I joined the league originally finally decided to retire.

I think when Carlos Gonzales finally retires, I might shed a tear.. (ok probably not)

Sunday, November 4th, 1984: FOOL News: Free Agents File
Today marks the beginning of Front Office Offseason League's free agent filing period. With it comes the uncertainty of an off-season filled with the potential for blockbuster signings, off-the-wall trades and a mad scramble to improve your club before you get left out in the cold.

General managers have the entire off-season in which to sign free agents. The biggest names on this year's market include:

1. Pedro Ortíz, 39 year-old starting pitcher
2. Maurice Lilly, 28 year-old starting pitcher
3. Nori Kitamura, 36 year-old starting pitcher
4. Domenic Shearer, 29 year-old starting pitcher
5. Alan Poole, 32 year-old center fielder
6. Larry Abbott, 29 year-old first baseman
7. Curt Vallis, 30 year-old starting pitcher
8. Pedro Silva, 31 year-old reliever
9. George Baker, 33 year-old left fielder
10. José Batista, 31 year-old starting pitcher

[old man]

Christian Larsen retired. I got him as a free agent from Baltimore in '65 to help me three-peat during my last year in St. Louis.

Needless to say, that didn't happen.

I think the Revolution is delayed a season, sad to say. I don't think Lopez did it either. The pitching did not come along as quick as I hoped. '86 sounds good though. I'll go and eat my humble pie now.

I had to cut my "Crash Davis".

My 1st ever pick when I entered the league was SP Sam "Dog Pound" Williams.

he never fulfilled his early promise that saw him drafted with the 5th pick in the 1967 draft.
He did however become the winningest pitcher in AAA history notching 167 wins. He became a mainstay of my AAA squad and is responsible for grooming such FOOL names as Ivan Flores, Mike Brown, and Davis Lewis.
At age 39 his skills have eroded, and with a surplus of talent at the AAA level, the organization was forced to make a change, and we tearfully had to release him.
Despite his record 169 wins in AAA, he never threw a pitch in the big leagues.

Pretty neat, yet, sad story ekcut. I guess if it were in any other league but FOOL, he'd have gotten his shot in the majors. Too bad, I guess, yet sorta cool at the same time.

Did he end up with Annie Savoy though?

Please welcome dacubz as the newest owner in FOOL. He is taking over the reigns in Columbus. He has experience in a few other OOTP leagues, so hopefully will add to the competition in the Republic League!

I think I might be the dumbest OOTP player ever.

I have NEVER seen the "Player Development Report" screen. I like it. There sooooo much stuff in this game.

You're not the dumbest. That's the people who programmed the UI that crams as much shit into it as possible, but that won't actually be found by anyone.

After a year or two of that screen, you may wish that you had never seen it.

I also took the opportunity to do a little minor league cleanup that I had neglected for.. well ever. Everyone's minor league team mascots should match the majors again, and the short abbreviation name should match as well now. No more trying to figure out who CPT-AA belongs to anymore.

I also changed New York from NYH to NYP just because that has annoyed me for the last decade

Yeah I was bored just clicking links in the Manager Home Page. I should do it more often apparently. That report, if you haven't seen it, is pretty cool for keeping track of your player progression.

Just wait till you make a deal cause of that screen (you think a player is in decline or the exact opposite) only to find out when you get him in next years file, that its about 10 points off from where it was last

Well it is one issue when a player doesn't play to the same level of their ratings.. there is a bit of a game involved there and perhaps realistic to some point. It is a completely different issue when that report makes up random ratings at times for players or has random years in the middle of a player's career when they just spike 30 points in everything for no reason only to drop the next season.

THat report I believe pulls the information from the same place that individual player's "Scouting Report" rating screen gets it though. It just shows the entire team's all at once.

Don't let me scare you away from that report. It is a pretty good way to look quickly at your entire minor league system and see how players are developing (or not developing). Just make sure you double check the information you get from the report because sometimes it seems to lie is all.

The new file is up!

Tommorrow night we sim the first night of free agency at the normal time. We will sim 26 days from November 4th until December 1st. There will be no sim on Wednesday night due to my plane not landing until roughly 3am ET.

Just to reduce the confusion on the odd schedule the next two weeks, I'll try to keep the thread title up to date so no one has any question when the sim is and what is being simmed that day. Obviously tommorrow night is the normal Tuesday sim, but this way everyone can get used to it.

Thankfully I got one of the best offensive threats I have had in a long time to extend and stay in RG, 2nd MVP runner-up Hector Rodriguez. Not a horrible deal for me either, as I like deals that get cheaper as a guy ages.

Ah well. The rebuild may be extended a year or two. *shrug*

Yeah, I saw your file on the ftp server and even pulled it down manually, but it said it was the wrong time stamp. As if you did it from an old file or something..

Alan I thought I was going to be able to get a file in during lunch, but thats not happening. We have our first home game today and I might not make it to my computer before hand to get a file in. Just wanted to let ya know.

I think you will be right. Free Agent day 2 is going to be great this year I think. Especially as some free agents who are asking for the world come down on their asking prices.

Hey, Alan, did you grab files yet? I just sent up another export, just in case.

Yeah, I am already simmed all the way to December I fear. The file I got for you was from 10:01pm ET tonight if you did a more recent one.
