Rise up - BYU Cougars (TCY)
Got the urge to fire this up again, so found my CD and off we go.
Coaching BYU of course and will use the following house rules 1-Can not recruit anybody with a test score under 1000 2-Must recruit top 5 top players from Utah that meet rule 1 and must call or visit them every week until they commit to me or someone else. 3-To simulate the honor code, any player that gets in trouble is kicked off the team immediately To my chagrin, my random academic rating is 22, which will make recruiting real interesting early on with house rule 1 in play. I played the 2004 season to build a foundation and I have a challenge. I started 0-5 thanks to a brutal schedule that included Notre Dame, USC and Stanford (all ranked) before rallying to finish 4-7. The unfortunate thing was the season ending debacle against rival Utah, a 51-0 loss that had fans calling for my head. Recruiting was not much better, as the poor academic reputation and my house rules led to only 3 top 1000 players, none of whom will contribute as Freshmen. It's going to be a long road back if I last. The SOL 8 is in Rhode Island (The Colonial Conference) Last edited by BYU 14 : 07-25-2015 at 04:29 PM. |

2005 Preview
* = Returning starter I have a little bit to work with here as Bucky Wynn took the starting job from Aaron Zatechka in week 3 and threw for 2,488 yards, 16 TD and 11 Int, completing 58.8% of his passes. KC Brennan is probably the better choice due to his upside, but I will give Wynn the first shot. Zatechka is relegated to mop up duty after an abysmal 2004 that saw him throw 6 picks, with no TD's and only complete 43.9% of his passes in 2 starts and garbage time in 3 other games. We lost our leading rusher (Dominic Webb 491 yards) and receiver (Reggie Fisher 56-763) but have some experience back here. Galloway was tabbed to start before being hurt and averaged 4.6 YPC, 122 yards in limited time. Korey "X-Files" Mulder had 38 grabs for 658 yards and 4 TD, while Seth Burton chipped in 21 catches. Nothing great here and I need to desperately find a triggerman in waiting to guide my Run and Shoot offense after Brennan graduates next year. |

*=Returning Starter The good news is, all five starters return along the line. The bad news is they were horseshit as we had the 119th ranked rushing attack in the nation. So bad in fact that 2 of the 5 did not retain their jobs after spring ball. Nothing in the pipeline here either as my recruits were just roster bodies. This is a huge area of need! |

*=Returning starter Four starters back along the front 7, but this is mostly a blue collar, no name crew, that was particularly weak against the running game, giving up huge chunks of yardage week after week. Elliott up front and new starter BJ Fields at ILB will need to spark our attacking 3-4 defense to greater heights. |

*=Returning starter It says all you need to know about a defense when your leading tackler is a safety as Oglivie and his 72 tackles were last year. 3 of 4 starters back here, but again, nothing to brag about last year and Yocum loses his job to a marginally talented BJ Schaefer. We are going to give up some points. On a bright note, CB Burt Logan was my highest rated recruit, if you can call that a bright note. |

One thing I hope helps this season is hiring two new coordinators. Not only were the two I let go mediocre at best, but they both had the personalities of Bobby Knight with a bad case of hemorrhoids. Recruits constantly commented that they did not like them, right before telling me they were selecting powerhouses like Tulsa and UNLV over BYU.
To remedy that I bring in Bart McGriff to run the offense and Archie Bernard to run the defense. Archie is a veteran who is terrific at play calling and congeniality, while being fair (DLine), poor (LB) and good (secondary) at position groups. McGriff is only 29 but has 5 years experience in the run and shoot and is very good at play calling and has good congeniality. For development he is pretty good at QB, lousy at RB, terrible at WR, but terrific at o-line and kickers. Our schedule is not as daunting this year (on purpose) with our tough games all on the second half. Hopefully this allows the team time to get some confidence and the goal this year will be to at least be bowl eligible.

And just for some added sunshine, on the injury front starting OLB Claude Holliday blows is Achilles and is done for the season, he may be back at some point next year. QB Bucky Wynn is upgraded to doubtful, but I am still sticking with Brennan at QB. I am turning my beloved program into a dumpster fire because none of the good athletes that qualify want to come to BYU because our academics suck and it will take a few years to repair that damage! |

We wrap up recruiting with 7 more commits and they are all just guys to add depth, fill roster spots and get good grades so we can start improving our academic reputation. Kind of hard to recruit to high academic standards when the school has shitty reps in all majors.

2005 Summary
A 4th place finish in the MWC is just not acceptable and we need to move towards becoming a contender. I am two years into a 5 year plan and we have work to do as we really did not beat anyone we should have and probably lost to a couple of team we should have beat. Utah finishes the year ranked #2 in the nation beating Texas 33-30 in the Sugar Bowl and ending up only trailing national champion Miami, who hammered Ohio State 49-24 in the Rose Bowl. Colorado State lost to Michigan 56-21 in the Holiday Bowl, while Wyoming was hammered by Notre Dame 35110 in the Independence Bowl. Final Top 10 1-Miami 11-1 2-Utah 12-0 3-Oklahoma 10-2 4-Ohio State 11-1 5-LSU 12-1 6-Tennessee 11-2 7-Wisconsin 10-2 8-Florida 10-2 9-Texas 11-2 10-Michigan 9-3 Three each in the top 10 from the Big 10 and SEC, others of note: 13-Notre Dame 10-2 15-Oregon 9-3 23-UTEP 10-2 (Go Miners Jeebs) Our final grade is 26 and now we move to the off-season, with much to do. At least I had no honor code issues Last edited by BYU 14 : 07-26-2015 at 01:02 PM. |

2006 Off-Season
The off season contains the usual number of complaints about free time, start winning and we will talk. Sophomore walk-on TE Rufus Singleton is suspended for grades, so I release him. Bart McGriff and Bernard Archie both retire from their coordinator spots. Archie I see as he was older, but McGriff is still only 30! Forget that I was going to fire him anyway, that is still a surprise.
Speaking of coaches, Jimmy Brien of LSU is named 2005 coach of the year. I leave ticket prices alone, don’t have the balls to asked for more money for our current product. While I am looking for staff, I decide to clean house and fire syndicate coordinator Irving Tang and hire AJ Gunn who is pretty good at academics and good at donations. For our OC I hire 33 yr old Bucky Upshaw, decent at play calling, injury avoidance and congeniality and a consistent developer of talent, QB=fair, RB=good, WR=Excellent, OL=pretty good, Kickers=pretty good. For DC I need to kind of settle on 31 yr old Aaron Mastin, fair in play calling but pretty good congeniality and rehab. Developing players he is decent with DL and good with the secondary, but lousy at LB, which is where we need help. Probably moving to a 4-3 for this reason. For scheduling I have a return date @ East Carolina set, so I schedule a home and home with Woonsocket from the Colonial League. They are not the best bet for revenge against the SOL 8 for stealing recruits as they are two time league champs and were 8-4 last year. They have some talent on offense including returning 1000 yard rusher Dean Browning, but the defense is shaky on paper, so I may have a good shot. Finally we move to a single back west coast style offense and 4-3 defense. Academically we improve a bit but still ranked 113, despite a national best 3.19 GPA. Next up, meet the 2006 Cougars |

2006 Offensive Depth Chart
Only 5 starters back on the offense, which is not really bad, but then again the reason some of these guys did not start last year is they were not good enough. KC Brenna is the unquestioned starter at QB and will be backed up by true freshman Dixon Fredrickson, our top rated recruit last year who we can't redshirt due to depth issues. At RB Roy Jung was the anointed starter, but got a surprise push from incoming Freshman Ike Puente, who may turn out to be the best recruit of the 2005 class when all is said and done. He performed well enough to be anointed our short yardage back and will get plenty of touches behind Jung, who he may even displace as the season goes on. At receiver we return our top receiver in terms of receptions in Stanley Perkins, but it is slim pickings after that. We have some youngsters with potential, but they are far from ready right now. We need to seriously upgrade here during recruiting. Up Front we are solid for guard to guard and will likely run between tackles as a result, but are weak at the tackle spots, which is another reason to become more run-centric this season as Brennan was sack an average of 5 times per start and if anything we may even be worse in these spots. Monty Dingle will be a beast down the road, but has a lot of developing to do! |

2006 Defensive Depth Chart
Ross Ruth was not tabbed as more than a part time player last season, but he grabbed the starting job midway through and was the most consistent player among our front 7 due to a non-stop motor that saw him place second on the team in tackles. Elliott is adequate on the opposite side and Fields and Dragon should both be capable in the middle. Linebacker is where I am worried as the lack of talent here is as much a reason we went to a 4-3 as the decent talent we have up front. OJ O'Neill would not start at Mike on a lot of teams, but he is the best we have and if he goes down we are in big trouble. So much so that I may pull Riley's red shirt if that happens. On the outside it is even worse as Holliday and Dibble (who didn't even have a schollie at this time last year) are barely passable as starters and after that there is a cliff. I am determined to keep McNeil's red shirt intact as he has to start next season and we need to score a big time recruit here as well. I am actually happy at corner, where Ales Andrews worked hard and was a +19 in skill from last year. He will line up against the opponents top guy every week and Deighton will be fine on the other side. True freshman Burt Logan will get plenty of reps on Deighton's side so he is ready to step in next season. Safety is a complete mess and we are going to have to play a lot of zone to cover up the weakness' back here. I am really going to miss Lamar Oglivie from this position! |

2006 Schedule
With a little luck we could actually be 4-0 heading into the Colorado State game, though with Rutgers and ECU on the road 2-2 is just as likely and Woonsocket is not a push over. By the time we get the meat grinder that is weeks 10 and 11 against Notre Dame and Utes I am hoping we are bowl eligible. The sad truth is though, we may be fighting for that 6th win on the road against a Wyoming team that dismantled us at home last season and returns a senior QB and their leading rusher, but did lose their 2 starting guards to academic suspensions. My prediction: Best case 7-4 and a minor bowl Worst case 4-7 and possibly be looking for a new job Swing Games (Air Force, Wyoming and East Carolina) |
