Can we get rid of the arrows

Those little down arrows next to the posts are really annoying.

I don't want to be told my post sucks, i know it sucks. plus i think they get in the way and make the board look cluttered.

Don't those arrows indicate posts that have been updated since the last time you refreshed? I would think that would be handy, saves memorizing post counts.

well, whatever, can we just have a way to turn them off, even manually.

It just makes the board look crappy. I'd type more but my rice krispies are getting soggy

No, they just go to the last unread post in the thread.

The threads with the open envelope are the ones that have new posts in them. The ones with a closed gray envelope are the ones with no new posts. It looks like the red envelopes are just the hot threads?

I'm with easymac on this one. Annoying.

Also, please, please, please get rid of the 'rating' of the thread.

I like the arrows. I don't care one way or the other about the thread rating deal, but I don't see the harm. *shrug*

Oh I see, then ya I agree, arrows are annoying. I even tried one out and it took me to the last post even though there were others above that I hadn't read yet.

So I vote for arrow removal as well

I don't like the arrows myself. I think they are a little distracting.

I like the arrows, it makes it easier to figure out what's been freshly posted.

Here is what I think the symbols mean:

Left hand column with the envelopes shows which threads have posts you have not yet read. The arrows show which threads have had new posts since the last time you marked every thing as read.

I think I can confirm what I just said. I marked every as read and there were no red envelopes or arrows. Once someone repleid to a thread, it showed with both a red envelope and an arrow. After reading the post and going back to the index, the envelop was grey, but the arrow remained. After marking all posts as read the arrow was gone and the envelope was still grey.

If you click on the down arrow it also takes you to the first new post in that thread since you last marked things as read.

If you put your cursor over the Arrow, the Tooltip says "Go to first new post". To me, this is somewhat redundant compared to the different envelopes (I think that column is much more detailed, Daimyo) but it is a shortcut instead of scrolling down. Somehow at Apolyton, when you open an existing thread, it knows where you left off (which can be annoying).

Why bother marking all as read? Every time you refresh, it gets dynamically updated, doesn't it?

I don't get it. I still got an arrow on a thread for which I had already read the last post. To have to mark each thread individually so that the arrow will be accurate (I think that's what you are saying) is a lot of trouble for not much gain, IMO.

The arrows say nothing about what you've actually read. They basically tell you what posts are new since the last time you've been to the forum (or since manually marking things read - you can do this by forum or for the entire board at once). The envelopes on the far left are what tell you what you've actually read or not read.

Are you sure? They don't seem to get updated automatically.

Here is the key explaining what the envelopes mean. In case it doesn't show up:

white envelope: new posts
red envelope: new posts to a thread with more than 15 replies or 150 views
grey envelope: no new posts
grey envelope with sparks: no new posts to a thread with more than 15 replies

You've got to actually leave for a certain amount of time and then come back (or mark the forum read) for them to reset.

Don't forget the ones with the black dot.

I still don't see any purpose of the arrows.

Looks to me like the black dot means you've posted (or voted) in that thread.

Even is we remove them from the main page, there's the same function at the top of the thread page.

I guess what I'm trying to say is, I viewed the last post in a particular thread, left, came back, saw the arrow by that thread, hit the arrow, and it took me to the last post, which I had already read.

If you are talking about the right pointing arrows to the right of the thread title, leaving your cursor over them will give you a tooltip saying "go to last post" That could be why you are transported to the last post in the thread every time you click on them.

Unfortunately, you can not get rid of the arrows. The best solution is to make new arrows, but make them smaller!

Fortunately, you CAN get rid of the thread ratings! Admins, just go to your forum options, and for each forum, you can turn off thread ratings.

not to mention, hitting the "end" button launches you to the bottom of the screen.

I like the down arrow. It lets you go to the first new post since you last visited the thread. I am often trying to find where I left off the last time, and this is very helpfull
