Wow-when the kid turns 18, he'll have been playing pro soccer for 4 years.

same here... if he's supposed to be one of the best in the world shouldn't he be going somewhere else? Somewhere where they know how to handle talent like him? I kind of see him being wasted playing for an American club |

He can't play at ManYoo or Chelsea or any of those other places until he's 18 probably anyway

yes but he could go play for their youth teams. I'd love to see what Paul Hart could do with him over at Nottingham Forest. |

Yeah, but he probably will at 16-17..
if they can get three halfway decent years out of him at DC before he goes over to England.. then maybe.. and I STRESS MAYBE... this kid can do for Soccer what tiger did for golf.

I don't really follow soccer, so this may be a stupid question...
Would he really develop better playing on the Man U. youth team as opposed to playing for DC United? If so, why? I know the MLS isn't on the same level as the EPL, but wouldn't the competition be at least on par with their youth squads? |

it's not the competition so much as it would be the people teaching him what he needs to know about playing the game professionally. |

We could debate this all day Bee (and I am sure some will want too ) The DC United MLS Team is much better than the youth teams of Manchester United. Bu with United, you get top training faciallties, top coaches, etc. If he plays for DC United for some significant time then it is a good move. If not, then his time would eb better spend aborad than warming the DC United bench, |

I don't think it's that bad for him to spend a few years playing for DC. At the very least, he'll get playing time. The bad part, of course, is he won't be challenged very much (I haven't been very impressed with too many US defenders). If he had gone abroad, I would hope to see him end up at the evil place that is Manchester United. Much as I dislike Ferguson, he seems to have done well with younger players. I'd hate to see him stuck some place where he'll have the same fate as Portillo and be a standout on the youth squad forever.

This is great news for us soccer fans in the States. We'll get a great chance to watch this kid grow before he leaves for Man U or Milan or Barca or Juve or wherever...

Only 1 thing to say:
See you back in 2010 and then we should start looking how good this kid turns out to be. It's way too early to tell how good he will turn out to be, there are too much stories of currently pro players who said they had a team mate in their early teenage years who was so much better then them and who eventually did not turn out to have what it takes as a professional football (excuse me, soccer) player. |

Latvia have the first-leg lead; it could happen. In fact, I expect to see one of Turkey, Holland, and Spain - the three big teams in the playoffs - wind up heading home. Two of them are playing catchup, and Spain are only one up with an away goal conceded.

6 year contract which probably has a nice minimum fee release clause in it.

Bee.. no offense.. but if it ain'y uour thing, fine. But I'm tired of seeing every topic about soccer have someone pop in and go "Who gives a flying fuck?"
We obviously do (for example, I'm getting 2004 New England Revolution Season Tickets), so leave us to our talk and we promise we won't belittle your sports topics if we don't like them

Great story. Already has a $1M contract with Nike. If it doesn't pan out, he can finish out high school and have enough to pay for any college he chooses to attend (though he will not be able to play soccer).

He skipped one grade and is now in an accelerated program. |

[MIJB] : How could you predict Latvia over Turkey ? Did you bet money on that ? Turkey was up 2-0 with 25 minutes reamining, then Latvia scores on a free-kick and add another long shot goal.
Congrats on that prediction ! |
