I think that you would need to take it on yourself to find things to do--hobbies, etc. that get you out of the house.

We moved back to Houston because my wife got a job down here but my parents were also still here and that has turned out to be a significant blessing. We were in different parts of Houston, about an hour away (more, with traffic) and that was more than enough distance to feel close enough to drop by on short-ish notice for a weekend but neither party was going to randomly drop by unannounced.

We didn't realize just how nice it would be to have the grandparents nearby when our son was born and while he's been young. And when Dad passed unexpectedly earlier this year, I was extremely grateful to have the extra time that being close afforded. That meant there weren't any real unresolved issues, just the grief of "we just wanted more time" and regrets about the future events not lived. Apparently, they also came to realize just how good that was, particularly in retirement, as they had been working on downsizing for a year so that they could sell the house in Houston, get something smaller here and get a rental in the same city as my sister and basically split the year between the two kids. Still, in both cases, far enough away to not meddle but close enough to be able to spend lots of time.

I still remain of the opinion that the fact that Trump fought so hard to not have his taxes released means there's something there that even he understands is either a) embarrassing to him or b) confirms illegal activity when combined with other evidence.

For a), I think it would have to be horrendous losses. Little embarasses Trump, but truly excessive losses might do it, especially if it also shows that his net worth is a fraction of what he claims.

For b), I expect the kind of stuff TrumpCo just got convicted of was actually rife in the organization for decades and thus the taxes will show up income mismatches in pretty stark relief.

But who the fuck knows.

Ari Melber had two legal experts on, one the former head of the SDNY, who said that the DOJ is under no legal obligation to look at anything that is referred to them by Congress. The other said he could throw it all in the garbage and never look at it legally. My evidence is simply reading comments, posts, and articles from right wing people but it's crazy that the NFTs seem to have done more damage to Trump with his base than anything else. From a power perspective you don't let your opponents off the hook when they are sinking their own boat. You just let them do their thing.

From a 'what might have the best potential good for the country moving forward perspective', having some sort of brokered deal between Ds and Rs could be a solid first step.

I still don't see that working as it requires a huge leap of faith on both sides, and there's been nothing recently that says that trust should be warranted.

Ultimately, the Ds should sit and wait it out, because a lot of what ails the R party would be on display 24/7 for the next 2 years. Maybe enough that it sways another presidential election and then some.
